MY BABY COMPASS
By

Mimi Zelman

How did you get started in this business? In my career as a Speech Pathologist, I worked with children and adults that had communication disabilities. Through this I realized that families needed the information that professionals have in identifying speech and language problems. Since a child is with his/her parents and caregivers 24/7, what better person to understand their childs strengths and weaknesses then those that take care of them? This prompted me to write, My Baby Compass, a child development program that helps parents asses and
Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

enhance their childs milestones in the areas of speech, language, hearing, cognitive, physical, and social-emotional skills from birth to seven years old. After I wrote my first book, My Baby Compass, Birth to Two Years, I began exhibiting and speaking at state and national conventions for the American Speech and Language Association. The book was so popular that I expanded the program and wrote My Baby Compass, Two to Four Years and My Baby Compass, Four to Seven Years. I realized that I had a niche and I began taking marketing programs

to increase my skills. I developed my website: www.mybabycompass.com that allows me to conduct most of my business over the internet and through Amazon.com. What was your backgroundwhat were you doing before this business? I was a Speech-Language Pathologist for 35 years in schools, hospitals, clinics, developmental daycares and skilled nursing homes. I took a writing course from Maureen Ryan Griffin at Word Play and came up with the concept of My Baby Compass. I retired from my job because I could increase the awareness of the importance of child development for the general public. It was an Aha moment and I have been running with it ever since. What is a good early story about your business? I had written the prototype of My Baby Compass, Birth to Two Years and I met a nurse that I was working with at a skilled nursing facility. He was concerned about his eighteen-monthold toddler and he was wondering if I could help him. I gave him a copy of the program along with the booklet that contained the skills and activities a child at eighteen months should be able to do. He called me to say that

he shared the information that he had recorded in the My Baby Compass, Birth to Two interactive manual with his sons pediatrician. The child was referred for an evaluation and was diagnosed with Autism. He cried when he called to thank me. I was so moved by the experience. It reminded me of the time in India in 1973 when I was at an orphanage to donate money. About forty babies and toddlers were crying at the top of their lungs when a woman of small stature walked in and sang a lullaby. The room became quiet and all of the toddlers were lifting their arms up to get a hug. The woman was Mother Theresa. I asked her what advice she could give a young girl on her way to college and she said, Dont be mediocre in anything you do, whether it is making a cup of tea or healing the world, be the very best. I have been following her advice ever since. What is unusual or unique about your business, in comparison to your competitors or similar businesses? My product, My Baby Compass and my speaking engagements are bridging the gap between what the professionals know and what families need to know about their children from birth to seven years of age. This program not only gives skills a child can
www.womanwithknowhow.com JUNE 2013

do but has corresponding activities to develop those lagging skills listed in convenient age-appropriate booklets. It is written for the average parent, professional or caregiver. Easy to understand and use is the number one comment that parents have said in numerous testimonials. It helps parents to assess a childs developmental milestones and then it provides a checklist to share with their health care provider, or if it is being used by a professional, to share with parents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends

that pediatricians tell parents that have concerns about developmental milestones that their child will outgrow it. This is true for 80% of the children, but only 10% of those children will outgrow it. Catching children early for a developmental delay is a win-win situation for everyone. I am writing articles, speaking on radio, appearing on TV, blogging and conducting parenting and early education classes to inform the public about the importance of communication skills in the first seven years of a childs life. I am also writing My Senior Compass to help families with aging parents in the areas of dementia, stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurological disorders that affect a persons ability to speak and swallow. I am known as the Positive Parenting Expert who offers information that families can trust. I am a speech pathologist that is writing for children of typical development, but if there is a problem, a parent will know what to do and how to get help. Is there a customer experience you are most proud of? One customer began using the My Baby Compass program with her infant boy. She incorporated two activities a day using the age-appropriate booklets along with the nursery rhymes,

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

music and age appropriate toys recommended in the My Baby Compass which includes all the manuals, booklets and CD rom. Her son is now four years old and he is functioning at two years above his age level. The customers pediatrician is now referring My Baby Compass to her patients. Do you do any charity or nonprofit work? I donate to Autism Speaks, three dollars for every book and five dollars for every My Baby Compass kit. I also give free books and kits to help raise money for Easter Seals, Smart Start and the Charlotte Heart Ball. I donate an article a month to Special-ism.com, Beacon Expert.com, and Family Share.com websites and online magazines for parents of typical and special needs children for free information about speech and language development. Who are some of your most notable partners in your business? Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, is my mentor for the upcoming, My Senior Compass edition. He believes in my products and he is helping me get my message to parents and professionals. I met Oprah last month and her producer connected me to Discovery Channel, Health Heroes for a segment to be

aired in August on the importance of early identification and intervention of a developmental delay. I am partnering with Dr. Sturner at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Hospital to get My Baby Compass evidenced based and on the CHADIS program, a computer based information program for pediatricians to help parents assess and enhance their childs development. What is an interesting story about a client interaction you had? I was working with an infant that had developed polio from the inoculation because she had a compromised immune system. Though she was completely paralyzed, I could tell she was intelligent by the way she used her eyes. As she developed, I was able to use a pass mire device that allowed her to talk. Her mother broke down in tears when she heard her say, Ma. It was such a magical experience for me. I then gathered a team of occupational and physical therapists to incorporate a mouth stick for her to manipulate a computer and provide a sip and puff technique so she could independently operate her wheel chair. Though it was challenging and required time consuming research, it was a very rewarding experience. What are some of the greatest
7

challenges in your business? Trying to balance work and play is very difficult. Some days I want to retire and ride my horse and have lunch with my friends. The problem is, I have this burning desire and passion to make a difference in the lives of children and their parents. I know what parents need to do to prepare their children for academic and social success. My biggest problem is convincing parents that it is more important to spend money on their childs brain then buying a cute outfit or electronic toy that will last for a short time. Just when I want to give up, I receive a wonderful email from a parent thanking me for My Baby Compass. What would you most like the reader to know about your journey in business? I have found it is important to: Educate yourself in all areas of business. I went to SCORE, a class sponsored by

the Small Business Administration to learn about making a business plan and how to price my products. Attend seminars with successful business coaches in branding, web design, social marketing, networking, trademarking, sponsorships and becoming media genic. Meet exhibitors at conventions, expos and community organizations that provide prospective clients and marketing opportunities. Make sure your product is the best quality in order to gain respect from colleagues and customers. Learn who you can trust and how to delegate those jobs that dont suit your abilities. Do not repeat what doesnt work. Dont pay for what you can get for free. Surround yourself with successful people that believe in what you are doing and help you understand that baby steps in the right direction is the way to success. As they say, it takes 10,000 hours to be an expert. I have met that goal as a Speech Pathologist, now I have to meet that goal in marketing my products.

What Is a Personal Branding Lifestyle?

our Personal Lifestyle Branding is all about you branding yourself in the most effective way that will lend you to the best positive results. Personal Lifestyle Branding is where you are continuously branding your business and you as your brand. Your company begins to become your lifestyle and is known as the work that you love to do and you get paid for it as it becomes integrated into your personal life. It becomes who you are, your identity, your relationships, the interaction and engagement in the community in which you live. Your lifestyle is centered on the company that you have built from the ground up and that is what people know you as. You have become the actual spokesperson for the company with the understanding that all eyes are on you because you are your brand always!

life. When you have the personality for what it is that you do, it becomes a part of your brand and often times, more than not, and it precedes you before others meet you. You are your brand and how it is perceived both personally and professionally is totally up to you because you are controlling it; you must understand that anything good or bad is a reflection of you and your business. It becomes connected and intertwined and not separate. There are things that would need to be addressed for damage control just in case there is some negative publicity. Of course you do know that it is better to be prepared than to not be prepared at all.

Building Your Authentic Brand That Speaks For You What does your brand say about you? Does it speak to your purpose, passion and ideal clients? Is your brand effective, Your Personal Branding Lifestyle is inte- authentic and memorable? Some really dont know and understand how their grated in what you stand for, develops, passion, and is the extension of who you brand speaks volumes before them and shares with the world who you are and are in your professional and personal

what you do. That is why your personal brand should be authentic. You should control your brand and the message that you send out, because what you say and how you deliver, testifies against your brand. It involves more than what you feel about your business but how others perceive you. Branding includes your marketing message, image, packaging, appearance, personal selling and the way in which you promote yourself and your business. Building your authentic brand online is a greater challenge to maintain because it is a bigger asset to your brand. What is an Authentic Brand? Designing an authentic brand simply means that you are true to yourself and how you give off your energy about what you do. You speak about your business with passion and clarity, knowing that you are walking in your destiny. Your authentic brand should be clear, reflect who you are, your values, character, uniqueness and pulls from your strengths. Your authentic brand brings your personal and business life together based on your values and your mission in life because you it is who you are. You are building your brand based on your character, values and reflect your genius that you bring to the world. You must get clear on who you are and how you conduct your business knowing that

it goes hand-in-hand. Walking in your authenticity sends out positive energy, love and joy in what you do. When you are designing your authentic personal brand you are really one with who you are and you love you, especially doing what you are most passionate about and how you serve in purpose. Your most authentic self has to have a holistic connection to the love that you have for yourself as you explore self-knowledge. When one loves themselves you become more aware of your strengths, talents, gifts, and your uniqueness because that is what will connect you to your ideal clients all of the time. It is said that how you treat yourself is how you will treat others, so if you love yourself it would be easy to love others. We are all different and unique in our own special way and that is why a brand should speak to characteristics such as quality, virtue and value. To measure a brand could be simple or complex depending how you would want to measure what your ideal clients connect emotionally. Your true authentic brand needs to attract and hold their attention. As you create your holistic, organic and authentic brand, you must look at the possible approaches that can expand your brand or hurt your brand. When

you hear Authentic Branding or Marketing you should always believe they are true to themselves and the world around them because they seek to serve other than money and material gains. Your authentic brand has an emotional connection that allows for your client to trust, know and love you and your brand. It is really about going deep within and seeing what really resonates with you and what does that look and feel like? You are looking at the rawness of who you are and creating a brand that speaks volumes about the real you, your values, your truth, your values, and your unique approach that tells the world how you want to serve them. You are also creating the purest and highest possible belief and creating a life and brand around it. Look at what is your highest vision that you can customize that totally flows through you and breathes your passion and purpose. It must vibrate

deeply in your soul to have a pure connection for you to follow and for others to believe in your brand. When you begin the process, there a few steps that you must take in order to prepare for building your authentic brand because you will use it as a roadmap to follow. It sets the model by which you will always conduct your business. The initial steps are as follow: 0 You must begin to convey what your personal desires are. 1 Your Personal Brand should express and communicate the real You. 2U nderstand how to execute and incorporate your Personal Brand into your life and your business. With these three questions it begins the journey of creating a Personal Dream, Personal Purpose Statement, Personal Intentions and Goals, and your Authentic Personal Brand Statement. Let me define each for you so that it can push you on your journey. 0 Personal Dream Write your personal dream down by including what brings you joy, who you are, what you want to become, your vision and knowledge behind what you will bring to the brand. Also include a

financial goal that would make your dream a reality. 1 Personal Purpose Statement Write one sentence that shares your ultimate purpose for you and your business. 2 Personal Intentions and Goals What are your intentions and commitments to achieving your goals? What goals are you seriously committing to that shares your personal brand for your business? 3 Authentic Personal Brand Statement You are going to share what your brand stands for

and what you will accomplish, your promise and what you will be dedicated to in your holistic business. As you work on these four areas, you will begin to look at what really matters to you and your business. You are designing the brand and how you want your ideal clients to perceive your brand and also how memorable your brand can be. It includes your own uniqueness, meaning, and most of all, how inspiring your brand is. Your brand would be heartfelt and soul-filled based how you will provide excellence to your clients. Your business should represent the harmony

between you and your business. Therefore, spend some time thinking about this because it will follow you going forward, so it is very important. I suggest that you get in a quiet place or outside with nature to get still and listen to your soul and what you are feeling. You must go deep within and become inspired by what resonates with you.

Reputation Management 101; What Every Business Should Know

usinesses live and die by word of mouth. Every business knows that is true. However, far too many businesses neglect their online reputations. They are blissfully unaware of what is being said about them online and ignore the fact that what they dont know can hurt their business. Many businesses make the mistake of believing that if they didnt build a presence online, that they dont have one. However, your businesss online reputation can be shaped by others who are having a conversation without you. This conversation is still being had, even if youre not a part of it.

Discover Whats Being Said about You The first thing you need to do in order to take control of your reputation is discover what is being said about you. This is something that every business must do and do often. The truth is, most businesses are completely unaware that they have bad reviews online. In order to discover if people are leaving bad reviews about your business, use Google. Simply type your name or the name of your business into the search engine along with words such as scam, awful, the worst or any other negative term you can think of.

The search engine will return pages that combine your business name Many businesses are shocked when and those awful phrases. If you dont they finally do check their online repuget any pages returned to you, then tation. Most often there is at least one your business has a fine reputation. unfavorable one. That one is affecting If, however, you do get returns, you their business weather they know it or not. Reputation management has never could be wondering what to do next. been as crucial to businesses as it is right now. So what can you do to take control What to Do About Bad Reviews When faced with a bad review, its of your reputation?
18

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

normal to feel shocked, angry, or even a little hurt. However, the first thing to do after calming down is to determine if theres any validity to the review. Was the company having a crisis or an employee having a bad day? Or did the client simply misunderstand a rule or procedure? The most trusted review sites have a section available where the owner of the business can make a comment. You can use this section to apologize and explain what happened. Any explanation should always start with an apology and a thank you for feedback. Clients love it when companies admit their mistakes and thank them, even for a bad review. Not only does this help your angry client feel loved, it helps future clients realize that you are a business that cares. Once youve apologized and thanked the reviewer, explain the situation matter-of-factly. If possible, explain why this wont happen again or how rare it is. Your calm words next to the customers angry ones makes you seem like a reasonable business and the bad review as just a rant. Conclude your response by saying something such as, we look forward to winning back your business or we look forward to your return visit.

Another way to deal with a bad review is to use humor to defuse the situation. The most famous example of this was a sandwich shop in New York City. This business responded to a bad Yelp review by saying, Come in and try the worst meatball sandwich one guy on Yelp ever had in his life. Using humor not only defused the situation, it also attracted many new customers. When someone hears that something is either the worst or the best, they just have to verify it for themselves. In the sandwich shops case, many people found they loved his sandwich. Defusing with humor works even in the most professional settings. The most important thing to remember when responding to a review is to let the client know that youre listening, and you care. Courting Good Reviews Bad reviews can often be neutralized by good reviews. If your business doesnt currently have a way to encourage reviews, consider setting one up. Good reviews not only help with your online reputation, they can also help with your search engine rankings, as well. Google and other search engines love sending people to a site thats already well loved. There are many ways to ask for good reviews, both online and off without seeming desperate.
19

www.womanwithknowhow.com JUNE 2013

The signature line of an email is a great way to subtly ask for reviews. A simple closing line after the company name saying something like, if you liked us, dont forget to leave a review, reminds them to leave a review without making it seem like youre begging. For extra effectiveness, hyperlink the line to the site that you would prefer them to leave the review on.

Another way to convince people to leave reviews is to incentivize them. For example, if they leave a review, they could receive a discount off their next visit or some other gift. Part of properly incentivizing people is to give them the gift whether they leave a good review or a bad review. In addition, their review should not be looked at until after they are gone. This keeps the reviews honest and provides you with the most valuable feedback. Your online reputation is your most valuable asset. Even if you havent set up a strong online presence, you still have a reputation online. This reputation can be either good or bad. Reputation management is an ongoing process. As long as you continue to provide excellent service, monitor your reputation, respond to bad reviews, court good reviews, and laugh at yourself, you have nothing to fear.

How To Be An Idea Person

I remember being mortified when the teacher, Mrs. Brown (I still have nightmares about that woman), said we had to hold up our papers in front of the class and be judged by our peers. Back in those days we wrote on paper that had big lines and spaces printed on manila paper. We used pencils that were completely impractical for a small Would you believe me if I told you that hand to hold, and the erasers were terrible. 1) Think like a kid. Im not talking about being childish, but being childlike. Start wondering about things, simple things, like how does the coffee grinder work, or what would happen if the tires on your car were made of gummy bears instead of rubber? At work, think about a particular activity you do and wonder about how to do it differently. For example, if you sit down at a computer to work, try standing for awhile. Walk around the office when you are trying to come up with an idea. Get a white board and doodle on it. Have a peanut and butter sandwich for lunch, and your favorite kids snack. 2) Laugh a lot and dont take yourself too seriously. I have a stuffed animal in my office, a very large Sylvester the Cat dressed in a jester suit that sits in a chair across from me. He reminds me to keep things light and not to get bogged down in negative thinking. 3) Write a poem about generating ideas. For example, heres a poem I wrote that is posted on my computer: I is for intelligence, I believe in myself; D is for doing, get those ideas off the shelf; E is for excellence, I know that I can; A is for action, and I have a plan. When I read this, it reminds me to stay out of negative thinking. Your poem doesnt have to be profound; it just needs to inspire you.
26

4) Look everywhere for ideas. The world is your oyster. Maybe a TV. commercial gives you an idea, or a quote a friend shares with you. Ideas are everywhere if you are on the lookout for them. Find books on how to generate ideas and on creativity. There are plenty of them out there and they really do help. 5) Write down your ideas. Whenever you have an idea, keep a notebook handy and jot that idea down right away. Ideas have a way of slipping back out into space if you dont capture them when they make an appearance. I often get my ideas while in the shower, so I keep my notebook in my bedroom. The point is, you are far more creative than you think you are. The key is to open yourself up to possibilities. Try some of these simple tools and see if they help you generate more ideas. And maybe the most important part of getting new ideas, is to have fun while you are doing it!

Goals Versus Performance

e have completed 1st Quarter and you should have your financials for the quarter. 2nd Quarter is well under way and you should be beginning to see some trends. Dont stick those financials in a binder and then hide them on a shelf! Those financials hold the keys to your success in this year. Lets make the assumption that you started the year with clearly defined goals. (By the way, this is a good time to shut the office door or go somewhere that you will not be interrupted. Its time to work on your business not in it.) Start by comparing the goals to your actual performance. How was your revenue in 1st Quarter? Were you over or under your goal? Why? What product lines over performed? Which ones underperformed? Which members of your sales

team made their numbers and which ones didnt? Why? Are there products or services that need to be eliminated? Is there a product or service that you should add? How were your expenses? Be sure to look at the trends, not just one month or quarter. Which items have shown an increase over the last year that cannot be tied to increased revenue? If you made adjustments last year, dont add the expense back unless you have to. Points to Ponder If you havent audited your revenue lately, its time. When times are tough, its easy to give a few discounts, freebies, or increase service levels. Be sure you know what your business is giving away. (I did this one year and found a number that I could have been embarrassed by. Fortunately, we were able

28

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

to correct quickly and the outcome was a growing business rather than a struggling one!) Set some new goals. If you need to adjust now is the time. Communicate to your team. If the news is good, have an appropriate celebration. If you are still in difficult times, tell them, and tell them what your plan is for the rest of the year and their part in the plan.

Enjoy your time working on your business. This is where the business leader makes her money and her businesss money!

Warm Weather Shape Up Tips

Bring A Buddy Exercise doesnt need to seem like a chore. Join a running group or grab a friend and head to the gym accountability will make you less likely to skip a workout. Track Your Trips Keep a calendar and mark each trip you make to the gym, go for a run, or participate in a fitness activity. Tracking your progress and routines will allow you to make adjustments and improvements to your fitness plan.

Those hot summer months are almost here and its time to take your workout to the next level to get in shape. Whether you are looking to shed a few pounds that came with the cold weather, training for a race, or beginning team workouts, there is no time like the present to get moving. While some people find it easy to make a workout part of their daily routine, many struggle with creating a fitness plan and sticking to it. Below are a few tips to help you create and maintain a diverse and healthy schedule this month and beyond:

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

Start Small Dont bite off more than you can chew. Set short-term realistic goals that are attainable. Lengthening your running distance each week, upping the number of reps you do on your favorite machine or increasing the weights you lift (by no more than 10 percent each week) will create a sense of accomplishment. Even when you feel like you do not have enough energy for a full workout, go outside for a walk, hop on the treadmill for 15 minutes or simply make it a point to take the stairs when possible every little step counts! Refuel Your Body and Reward Your Taste Buds It is crucial to refuel your body post-workout with a mix of carbohydrates and high quality protein. One such protein-rich choice is Rockin Refuel Intense Recovery, which is 100 percent real milk with 20 grams of protein and features a 2:1 carb to protein ratio which has been proven to maximize muscle recovery. Your muscles will feel the difference and your taste buds will appreciate the great taste of real milk! Switch-Up Your Schedule Do not get stuck doing the same routine each time you are heading to the gym. Try taking a class such as CrossFit, Boxing

or Boot camp; join a summer sports league or sign-up for your first triathlon. Trying out different types of workouts will make you feel refreshed and allow you to exercise different muscles. Remembering these tips can help you maximize your workouts and make them more enjoyable. Check out RockinRefuel.com or visit Facebook.com/ RockinRefuel for more summer shape up tips. Whether in my career or my personal life I have had successes and failures. Both taught me lessons, sharpened my skills and made me a better leader/person though not without pain. The take away from both career and personal challenges - do the best you can, when you can and then trust all you can.

Who would you describe as your mentor(s) and why? 1) Susan Basini modeled all of the characteristics of a great leader in the nonprofit world, bright, innovative, enthusiastic and tenacious. Whats on your bucket list and why? I dont have anything in my bucket list. Any difficult times youd care to share with our readers?? And if so what lesson have you learned? The first large grant request for the clinic that I wrote was turned down. I was devastated, confused and afraid for our future. We had a great story, great people and it was a great opportunity how could they turn us down? I have always wanted us to grow faster, care for more patients, build more programs to impact health outcomes. We have had to learn to crawl, walk and then run in all areas of our work: caring for patients, volume of patients, creating service partnerships and raising operational money. We were not always ready to leap to the next level. So I have had to learn that things dont always go the way I envision yet I have to trust and keep moving forward. What inspires you? to complete their day. Funders who believe that all people should have access to healthcare. Foundations who know that a healthy workforce translates in a healthy community. A patient going blind from cataracts in both eyes received surgery one of our partners, Horizon Eye Care, but had vision remaining in one eye. After she went through the successful surgery she kissed the surgeons hand and those that assisted him and then came to the clinic and kissed our hands. It was a moment that does not leave you but continues to inspire you to continue to work for those that do not have healthcare access. What makes you laugh? work, raise families, sustain ourselves and build healthy communities. I believe we need to provide each citizen with the basics that enables him/her to make their own way. Basics such as a good education and a health care not a handout. Health is fundamental and universal. The three industries with the lowest percentages of employee healthcare benefits are manufacturing, agricultural and service. As a citizen I benefit from the services and products offered through these industries yet these employees traditionally have a lower wage and poor benefits. To build our economy and our communities we need to provide basic healthcare for everyone. Tamara Withers-Thompson Tell us about you. I grew up in Gastonia. Graduate of Gaston College, 1980 with ADN. Worked for Gaston Memorial Hospital on a med surg unit after graduation. Served as the Director of Nursing Service at 120 bed SNF in Gastonia until going to work at Presbyterian Hospital. and Manager of Charlotte Community Health Clinic. Reside in Clover, SC- Married with one daughter, 2 stepdaughters and 4 grandchildren. Husband is a home builder. We have three horses, 2 miniature donkeys, chickens and a precious Pug- Piper. How did you get started ? My mother was a RN so I grew up volunteering at NC Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia where my mother was a Nursing Supervisor. I spent many happy days volunteering at that childrens hospital. I fed patients, played board games with them and functioned in a candy striper role; passing out water and mail. I was also the neighborhood small animal vet taking care of my friends dogs, cats and hamsters. The first time I performed CPR( at 13) was actually on a hamster and he lived for several days until he finally succumbed to whatever rodent illness that plagued him. I always knew I wanted to be a nurse but what I really wanted was to manage the people that provide the care. It didnt take long to realize that the caregiver needed as much care as the patients! I feel very responsible for my staff. They are family to me. I want them to feel supported and cared for so that they have what they need to do their jobs. I want them to have long careers at CCHC! I love problem solv-

ing, systems, outcomes, organizing and planning. When you see your vision in motion it is so rewarding! How have your prior career experiences prepared you for your journey in life? Having a variety of nursing jobs early in my career has proven very valuable. I have never been afraid of changing jobs and finding a new role to feed my creativity. I have been fortunate to work in clinical settings that provide care to most age groups and populations. Going to work for Presbyterian Hospital in 1988 was an excellent career move. Initially, I worked on a medical unit that provided care to HIV/AIDS patients so my compassion and patient care skills grew immensely during those first three years at the hospital. In those early years of the epidemic in Charlotte, all of my patients died. I had to learn how to cope with losing those young men and women. It was a tremendous learning and caring opportunity that I treasure. It made me a better nurse and a better person. Presbyterian is so supportive, always allowing their nurses to do unique, creative jobs and encouraged nurses to change roles and try new opportunities. I was so nurtured during those early years at Presbyterian and had such incredible learning opportu-

nities that I will be forever grateful to those that mentored me- Anne McKelvey, Judy Page, Lise Heidenrich. What wouldyou most like our readers to know about your journey in business? In life? I have been fortunate in both life and business. I have a wonderful loving, supportive family. I love my job even on the worst days. I work with a great team of staff and volunteers that give 110% each day they come to CCHC. If I learn at least one thing every day and make someones day better- then I am doing what I should be. When you have an opportunity every day to make a differencetake advantage of that opportunity! You wont feel empty or sad very long. Who would you describe as your mentor(s) and why? Certainly Nancy Hudson, my ED has been my mentor and partner in the creation of the clinic. Without Nancy, the Charlotte Community Health Clinic would not exist. She is the brains! She has such knowledge and vision for the clinic. I am honored to be one of her partners in the clinic. Martha Brinsko, ANP is also a mentor. She keeps me sane and keeps me realistic and objective. She grounds me. And I would be negligent not to mention Ophelia Garmon-Brown, MD and

Jesus Hernandez, FNP. These two keep me spiritually moving in the right direction. Anyone that knows either of these individuals know that they are both so

caring and culturally competent that to know them is to be a better person. They are always there for me when I question, What am I doing? I am so fortunate to have all of my mentorsthey are so important to my continued growth as a manager. Whats on your bucket list and why? See a Packers game at Lambeau in the snow! Love football- College and pro!! Snowmobile in West Yellowstone again! What a blast! 70 mph in the snow!! Visit Ireland- rent a house in a small village and take trips from that location. Swim with dolphins anywhere and everywhere!! Camp across America! Love camping and campfires and the great outdoors. Any difficult times youd care to share with our readers?? And if so what lesson have you learned? My mother died in a head-on collision in 2006. I truly didnt think I could live after that. She was such a strong, vibrant woman that had beat breast cancer only to cross the line and die within hours of the accident. And she died in Asheville in the ED without her family around her which tore me out of my frame. I was devastated. My friends and family were so supportive and caring. They called me daily, they cried with me and they held me when I was emotionally dead. Had they not supported me- I probably would have died from the

But what I learned is so important- love like there is no tomorrow, dont hesitate to reach out to those you love with calls, cards and touch and remember that are things worse than death. Because had my beautiful, active, vibrant mother lived- she would have been in horrible pain, never walked again and had to finish out her life in bed. GRILL a Better, Healthier Burger

tein to keep you trim and energized, Dulan said. In addition to choosing nutritious ingredients, exercise portion control and practice moderation to create an even healthier burger. Dulan recommends considering these tips for building a better burger:

Now that summer is here, its time to fire up the grill. For many, a cookout isnt complete without a juicy, delicious hamburger. Even those trying to follow a healthier, natural diet can enjoy this classic summer favorite by using the right ingredients.

it has less fat. So, adjust the cooking time to match your method of grilling. To make the grilling process as healthy as possible, substitute natural charcoal. Products such as Big Green Egg Organic Lump Charcoal, use organic hardwoods and burn more efficiently without harsh chemicals or odors. Try new, healthier toppings that add a unique twist of flavor to your burger. Instead of ketchup, which can be loaded with excess sugar and sodium, consider fresh salsa. Replace mayon-

naise with sliced avocado, which is a creamy, heart-healthy alternative. Use whole grain buns in place of white buns. Whole-grains are absorbed slower by the body, meaning they do not raise sugar levels as quickly and keep you feeling full longer. This reduces the urge to eat larger portions or snack after a meal. model, allowing us to provide added value to current clients as well as foster future opportunities with companies committed to utilizing minority owned businesses. We look forward to the new opportunities that our WBENC certification will bring while we also work to add value as a WBE vendor. By including women-owned businesses among their vendor partners, corporations and government agencies demonstrate their commitment to fostering diversity and the continued develoopment of their supplier/vendor diversity programs. WBENC is the largest third party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women in the United States and is a resource for more than 700 US companies that rely on WBENCs certification as an integral part of their supplier diversity programs.
