Der europische Faschismus war sowohl ein transnatio nales als auch ein internationales Phnomen. Der Begriff transnational hebt dabei auf die Tatsache ab, dass wir es bis 1933 nicht mit Beziehungen und Interdependenzen z wischen Staaten oder staatlichen Organisationen zu tun haben, sondern mit Austausch- und Lernprozessen, die sich zumeist jenseits und abseits der bekannten Kanle zwischenstaatlicher Kommunikation vollzogen. In der Forschung haben diese Netzwerke bisher ebenso wenig Aufmerksamkeit gefunden wie die informelle faschistische Internationale, die sich seit Mitte der 1920er Jahre herausgebildet hat. Die Konferenz Die faschistische Herausforderung nimmt den 90. Jahrestag des Marsches auf Rom zum Anlass, die neue Faschismusdebatte seit 1990 mit der lteren Diskussion zu kontrastieren und das Innovationspotential ihrer Forschungsfelder im Praxistest genauer zu bestimmen. Sie will ein Schlaglicht auf weitgehend vergessene Aspekte der Geschichte des Faschismus werfen und der Forschung neue Anste geben.
European Fascism was both a transnational and an international phenomenon. The term transnational emphasises the important fact that up until 1933 this was not a matter of relationships and interdependencies between states or state-run organisations; new interpretations instead focus on processes of exchange and learning, which were mostly performed outside of the main channels of intergovernmental communication. In terms of research these networks have, up to now, received little attention, just like the informal fascist International that emerged since the mid-1920s. The conference The Fascist Challenge uses the 90th anniversary of the March on Rome as an opportunity to contrast older discussions with new debates on Fascism that have come about since 1990 and to determine the potential for innovation within these fields of research. This will shed new light on aspects of the history of Fascism that have been ignored for a long time and will give new impetus to research. Kernstck ist die Untersuchung nationaler und transnationaler Kulturen des Faschismus, die Auseinandersetzung mit den faschistischen Netzwerken, mit ihrer Reichweite und Konsistenz, ihrer ideologischen Spezifik und inneren Kohsion sowie mit ihren Zukunftsprojektionen. Schlielich stehen die Gewaltund Vernichtungspotenziale im Mittelpunkt, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg und im Holocaust schauerliche Realitt wurden.
