A Leer from Fr. David - Pastor

The common wisdom these days is that a er receiving the Sacrament of Conrma on, young people stop praccing their faith. Newspapers roll out ar cle a er ar cle, detailing how young Catholics appear disengaged or disinterested in their Church. But, I am happy to report that this has not been my experience at Mission San Luis Rey Parish. At a recent round table discussion with Fr. Adrian, our young people reported how they have experienced Christ in our Faith Family and that they are building a deep relaonship with Him. With the good work of the Conrmaon Team and the strong founda on built by our Religious Educa on Program, young people are mee ng together for Mass, prayer, worship, adora onnding opportuni es for community and fellowship. There is an excitement growing among our young adults and youth that is contagious. I believe that we are all witnessing the movement of the Holy Spirit, asking us to fully embrace, encourage and support our youth, young adults and youth leaders as they deepen their faith. As our young people are growing in holiness, they are challenging each other and all of us to do the same. They are asking us to take risks and make changes in the way we do things; to nd fresh and dynamic ways to a ract young men and women to the Faith and to Christ. They want their Church to be a place where there is excitement and enthusiasm for the Gospel. They want to deepen their love for the Lord through prayer and faith-sharing, and to serve the poor as The Holy Father, Pope Francis has urged us all to do. A er prayerful considera on, Fathers Adrian, Luis, Arturo and I have decided to listen to the Youth/Young Adults of our Parish and face our Faith Forma on programs in a new direc on in order to support their faith journey. To accomplish this, we are making meaningful changes in our programs. We are in the process of hiring a full me Director of Faith Forma on for Youth and Young Adults. With the support of the Franciscan School of Theology and the Retreat Center, all our parishioners will be oered an even wider variety of Adult Educa on Programs; Bible Study, courses in Theology and Spirituality as well as retreats. With a restructuring of the Religious Educa on Department, organiza onal changes on our parish sta have had to be made. Bill Bischo has le us as the Director of Adult Faith Forma on and that posi on on the sta has been eliminated.

Bill came to work here at the parish eleven years ago and has worked in the Diocese for 16 years. As the Director of Religious Educa on, many members of our parish family are grateful to him for his hard work with our Conrma on Programs, RCIA and the Bap sm Team. Bill prepared many military personnel for Sacraments, par cularly those about to be deployed. He has been par cularly generous working with those adults who have returned to the Church who wanted to know more about their faith. Hes taught many Bible Study Classes and courses in Catholic Theology. He trained many parents and volunteer teachers in basic catechist courses with great success. Many parishioners are grateful to Bill for his leadership and instruc on over the years. Recently, you might remember that Bill acted as our Master of Ceremonies at Parish Liturgies, especially at Holy Week and Easter. His calm and grace kept us all on track in very tricky situa ons during various ceremonies. On behalf of our sta and parishioners, I thank Bill for his devoted service to the parish and for his work in so many areas of parish life. This is not the end of his ministry. He will con nue to give retreats and is scheduled for a Twilight Retreat at the Old Mission later this summer. We all wish Bill and his wife Joanne many happy years, and we hope that Bill takes many good memories away with him. At the sta party held for Bill this last week, the Old Mission and Parish stas came together to assure Bill of how much we value and appreciate the great work that he has done at Mission San Luis Rey Parish and wished him Gods blessings. Change can be a challenge for everyone. However, I feel excited and blessed about what God is doing and going to do for our young people and young adults at Mission San Luis Rey Parish, and indeed for all of us. To our older parishioners I say you are not forgo en; we rely on your wisdom, your witness, your prayers, and on your support. We look forward in the fall to providing ongoing educa on for you also. My prayer is that our whole Faith Community at San Luis Rey grows in its knowledge and love of Christ and His Church as we walk this journey together. Sincerely yours, Father David Gaa, O.F.M.

Sinceramente suyo,

Padre David Gaa, OFM Prroco

First Friday Devotion

Devocin del Primer Viernes

The Promise of Gods Uncondi onal Love and Innite Generosity

The church has always encouraged authen c and balanced forms of devo on that will help the faithful to deepen their apprecia on of the Eucharist. The First Friday devo on is dedicated to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus and is associated with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque who was given the gi of an intense grace lled prayer life. In her mys cal insights (visions) she was given messages to ght the heresy of Jansenism that drove people way from God. The devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus emphasizes the mercy and love of God and encourages believers to frequently receive communion. Through receiving the sacrament, people will come to experience and know the uncondi onal love of God. On First Fridays, Friday, June 7, (Friday in honor of Good Friday), parishioners gather a er the Daily Mass and spend from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in Eucharis c Adora on. People pray for themselves and the church to always prac ce and experience the mystery of receiving communion and par cipa ng in the sacramental encounter with Jesus. Please join the members of our parish in this very important part of the churchs devo onal life.
