Caution
While the trend of Vastu has become popular more recently it has not been proven in any way. Living in a Vastu perfect house may not guarantee a hassle free life if our destiny wishes it otherwise. Our deeds also rule our lives.

The following are the guidelines to design and construct a prosperous house. It is essential to understand inter prt these ground rules and then apply. 1. The main door of the house should preferably be located in any of the exalted positions from the Northeast corner - either from North of Northeast or from East of Northeast. Doors can also be in the South of Southeast or West of Northwest but in no case, should the main entrance be from the center of any direction. Also the main entrance or door should be avoided in all the following four directions, namely, North of Northwest, East of Southeast, South of Southwest and West of Southwest. There should not be any obstruction or water body just opposite the main entrance. 2. Balconies should be planned towards the East and North and should be definitely avoided in the South and West. If balconies in the South and West cannot be avoided, then larger balconies must be provided towards the North and East. Care should be taken while providing balconies so that a cut or truncation is not created in the Northeast corner. 3. The kitchen should be ideally situated in the Southeast corner of the house and as an alternative in certain cases, may be in the Northwest corner, but in both cases, the cooking platform should be arranged to facilitate cooking while facing east only. The Kitchen should never be in the Northeast corner and it should also be avoided in the Southwest too, as both locations will create problems with respect to the health and finance of the inmates.

4. Rooms in the West and East can be used for dining. The appetite can be stimulated in the dining hall by having the walls painted in light pink or orange. A rectangular diningtable is the most preferred. In the dining room, while eating, one should sit facing East or West. 5. Grains and other food can be stored in the Northwest sector. Oil, butter, ghee, milk and other oily liquids can be stored in the Southeast of the Northwest room. 6. When a generator or transformer is to be located outside the plot, it should be placed in an open space in the Southeast sector. As a second choice, it may be placed in the Northwest sector. 7. The overhead water tank should be located in the Southwest corner of the terrace preferably in the West of Southwest. 8. Penthouses, if built, should be in the Southwest corner of the terrace leaving an open space in the North and East. 9. The prayer room should be planned in such a way that it is placed either in the Northeast corner or in the central portion (Brahmasthana) of the house. The pictures of the god should touch the wall on the East side in the prayer room facing West; inmates should perform their prayers facing East for better concentration and devotion. 10. No garbage should be thrown or dumped in the Northeast corner of the building or plot and the Northeast should always be kept free and clean. 11. Heavy equipments such as the grinder, fridge, etc, should be placed towards the South and West walls in the kitchen. Even in the storeroom, racks should be built on the South and West walls. 12. Rainwater should flow West to East or South to North and ultimately flow out from the Northeast corner of the house or plot. 13. The Northeast, North and East walls should be decorated with photo frames, mirrors, and paintings of gods and with wallpaper with natural scenery; whereas the West, South and Southwest walls can be decorated with scenery in a dull or matte finish. The South wall can be used for hanging pictures of departed souls. Pictures of living beings may be hung on the Eastern wall. 14. It is always advisable, and it is considered profitable, to purchase additional adjacent plots on the Northeast, North and East sides. 15. Under no circumstance, should one acquire any plot adjoining the South or West sides of one's

plot. Any adjacent land acquired on the South or West side can be disastrous to the person. Some more rules

1. The master bedroom should be in the Southwest corner, while other bedrooms can be in the Central South and Central-West directions. A bedroom in the Northwest is also recommended but should be used as a guest room or only for daughters. Bedrooms should be avoided in the Southeast corner. 2. It is preferable to have children's rooms in the West or North. Children should have their study desks in the North or East of the room and they should face East while studying. 3. One should sleep with one's head pointing towards the South. Children, however, can sleep with their heads pointing towards the West. No one should sleep with their heads in the North. 4. The bedroom can be painted in light to deep blues to induce sleep. Green is advised for study rooms to promote intelligence. Sandal/ yellow is advised for the prayer room. 5. The living room should be located in the North or East sectors of the house. Heavy chandeliers or fancy lamps should not be located in the geometrical center of the rooms. They may be placed slightly towards the West or South of the room. 6. TVs and computers should ideally be placed in the Southeast corner of the living room or study room. They should not be placed in the Northeast corner or Southwest corner. 7. Telephones can be placed in the Southeast or Northwest corner but not in the Southwest or Northeast. 8. Living rooms can be painted in white, yellow, light pink, light blue or green. Grey, red and black are to be avoided. 9. Always keep the center of the room, building and plot, free from any loads, weights, pillars, columns, beams, water bodies, etc. 10. It is preferable to have the staircase towards the South, West or Southwest of the building but it may be in the Southeast or Northwest, depending on other parameters. Staircases should be avoided in the Northeast, North and the East. 11. Circular/spiral staircases are generally to be avoided. The number of steps in a staircase should be odd, including the landing step, and they should rise from East to West or from North to South. It is better to make sure that the steps are by the South and West walls, and that it should be constructed in such a way that the movement is in a clockwise direction while going upwards, that is from the ground to the higher floors. 12. Toilets should be located in the Northwest corner of the building or in the Northwest corner of the rooms. Where Northwest toilets are not possible, Southeast toilets are allowed. Other alternative directions for toilets are Central-South or Central West. Closets in the toilets should face North or South, along the North-South axis; and should not face the East or West. See figure for all possible locations for toilets and bathrooms. 13. Toilets should be avoided in the Northeast, North and East. 14. Mirrors in the toilet and dressing room should be on the North or East walls. 15. A bathroom in the East sector is most preferred as the beneficial rays of the morning sun can enter and promote the health of the user. 16. In the office or study room, the table should be placed in the Western or Southern side so that one sits facing the East or North. No equipment, furniture, cupboards, etc, should be placed touching the North or East walls and if it becomes unavoidable, they should be kept at least 4" or 6"

away from the walls. 17. Cash boxes can be located in the room towards the North (treasury). But if the box is heavy (such as a safe, heavy almirah) then it should be kept in the Southwest corner and the door of the almirah should open towards the North. 18. The storage or lumber-room can be located in the Southwest, adjacent to the Master bedroom. 19. If possible, the house should be extended by 4 feet to 5 feet in the Northeast direction to ensure the Northeast directional bliss for the household. Growing tulsi and other beneficial herbal plants in the Northeast will promote good health and prosperity. 20. Pictures of landscapes depicting mountains should be hung on the South and West walls only. Landscapes containing water, such as pictures of lakes and rivers should be on the North and East walls. Pictures of eagles, battle scenes, and carnivorous animals should not be used for interior wall decorations. Pictures of horses, cows and elephants can be used for decoration purposes.

Complete Vastu Guide

Vastu Sastra (Shastra) Where we live can influence our happiness, wealth, health, and prosperity. The Vastu Shastra is the Vedic science of building. When one studies the Vastu Shastra, he learns to create buildings that favorably influence those things that bring us happiness. The Vastu Shastra considers the astrological placement of the Sun, Earth, and other planets during the actual construction. It also considers where the building site is located, the sites shape, the proposed buildings shape, the direction the building wi ll face, the location of gates, entry doors, room doors, windows, and the buildings general design. North and east are considered important directionseast because it is the direction from which the sun rises. Assessing the Land When purchasing a property, it is a good idea to stand on the land and feel its vibration for a few moments. Trust your feelings. If you feel positive about it, consider buying the land. If not, it is probably not good for you. It is best to buy land where happy and successful people have lived. A house sold by a person in distress or who is impoverished, should be purchased only with caution. A dilapidated or haunted house should not be purchased at all. The land should be cultivatable and should smell good. It is best not to build on nonarable land. Land that contains many rocks, anthills, many worms, bones, broken pottery, sludge, and thorny trees should not be purchased. If the center of the land is humped like the shell of a turtle, it should not be purchased. The color of the soil should also be considered. White soil is good for brahmans (priests, teachers, scientists, or intellectuals), red for ksatriyas (rulers, soldiers, or administrators), yellow for vaisyas (businessmen, farmers or bankers), and black for sudras (laborers, artisans, craftsmen, or servants). When you assess the soil, do not just make a surface check, but also dig about 4m (12 ft) down. If the soil is black up to 1m (3 ft) down and white or red below that, the land can be purchased. According to Vastu Shastra, black and clayey soil is not good for building. If the soil is crumbly rock, money can easily be gotten. Yellow soil is good for businessmen. Another test of land quality is to dig a knee-deep hole (2/3m or 2'x2'x2') and then refill it. If after filling the hole you have some soil left over, the land is good. If there is no soil left after filling the hole, the land is average. If the returned soil does not even fill the hole, this is not a good sign. Such land should not be purchased. This shows the soils natural

moisture and aeration.Again dig the same sized hole. This time, fill it with water. If it takes more than an hour for the water to be absorbed, this is a good sign. If there are many cracks in the hole after the water has been absorbed, the construction may cost more than you expect. This is a percolation test done even in the U.S. to test for clay deposits. The cracks indicate clay soil, which is not best for water drainage and can cause foundation problems, etc. Also, wastes are not carried away properly, which can bring disease. Do not purchase land that has been used as a crematorium, cemetery, or a samadhi (tomb for a holy person). The land should not be purchased if in the recent past someone has committed suicide on it, or if there have been several deaths over the period of a couple of months. It is usually best not to purchase land next to a bridge. If the bridge is on the north or east sides, it definitely should not be purchased. If it is on the south or west sides, that is a safer purchase. It is also usually best not to purchase land that shares a well with another property. The land can be purchased, however, if the water supply is a common well on the north, east, or northeast side. A plot of land situated on a hill is also not a good purchase in most cases. It is better to purchase level ground. If the land to be purchased is on the side of a hill, however, and the land slopes down toward the north or east, that is all right. If the land slopes to the west, do not purchase it. After choosing and purchasing land, plants should be grown on the land. Also, if possible, keep a cow and her calf on the land for a while to make it more auspicious. The Land The direction that the front of a property faces is important. The best shapes for plots of land are square or rectangular, facing squarely on the four cardinal directions. A land tilt of 20 degrees, off square by 20 degrees, is acceptable. If the plot is rectangular, it is better that the longer sides run north to south rather than west to east. If the plot of land does not squarely face the four cardinal directions, and if the road does not run in one of the four cardinal directions, the house should be built facing the four directions The house should be square or rectangular, and the faces of the building should each be toward a cardinal direction, and not built facing the road. It is not good to purchase a piece of land squeezed between two larger pieces of land as such land will bring its owner poverty. The northeast side of the land should be the lowest side. If the northeast side is at a higher elevation than other sides of the property, you can dig soil from that one side and use it to build up the other parts. The land should either slope down toward the north or east, but not toward the west or south. Land sloping north brings riches, sloping east brings good fortune, sloping south brings ruin, and sloping west brings financial loss. It is auspicious if tall buildings or hills do not obstruct the north, northeast, and east sides of the land. Do not purchase land with such obstructions to those sides because the suns rays will be blocked.Having those same obstructions blocking the west or south sides, however, bring health and wealthlight coming from the southwest is not beneficial. The suns rays

traveling westward are considered harmful. Thus such obstructions block out harmful rays. For the same reason, a water source located on the southwest side of a building will cause the owner misery. Similarly, there should be a minimum number of doors and windows set into the southwest side of a building; the majority of windows should be set in the northeast side. The boundary walls around a property should be higher in the west and south and lower in the north and east. It is auspicious if the plot has a river or a stream flowing through it on the northeast, or if there is a lake on the same side. It is not auspicious if there is an electrical power supply or large electric pole on the northeast side of the plot. A telephone pole is not negative in the northeast, however. There should not be any valley, a depression in the land, or large pit around the land. Construction Construction should not stop once it begins. Workers should not be unnecessarily pushed to speed up their work; work for the day should stop at sunset. No construction should be done at night. A qualified engineer should always oversee the construction. Building materials should be stored in the southwest corner of the property during construction. The storage area or structure can also be built in the southeast corner, at least 1m (3 ft) from the property boundary. The guard should stay in a house in the southeast corner. Thieves will be a danger if the guard stays in the northwest corner, and the guard should not stay in the southwest corner. Order of construction: the well, the storage house, and then the boundary wall. Roads in Relation to Land A square piece of land surrounded by roads on four sides is considered very good. It should be purchased even if at a high cost. A person who owns this land will become wealthy, healthy, and happy. If a road runs alongside the property and ends at the northeast corner, that is also very good. If a road ends on any other parts of the property, however, that plot is usually not good. A road on the north side of the property is good, but a road on the south side is not so good. If there is only one road, it is best if it is located on the east side. It is not so good if it is located on the west side. If there are roads on only the east and north side, that is good. If there are roads on the west and north, it is average. Roads on the north, west, and eastthat is, only on these three sidesis not so good. Roads on the north, south, and west is also not so good. It is inauspicious if there are three roads only on the east, south, and west.Land should also not be next to a T or Y intersection. Negative Location of Land There are other aspects of land assessment that should be considered. The plot should not be within twice the distance of the height of the house to a public placea hospital, factory, temple, church, marriage hall, courthouse, cemetery, or cremation grounds. There should not be a laundry place, shoe shop, meat shop, or workshop with loud machinery opposite the property. The house should be at least 25m (80 ft) from the entrance of a temple. The

propertys gate should not face a temple or church, and the shadow of a temple or church should not fall on the house. If the public place is twice the distance of the height of the house away from the house, it will have no effect. Building Material Only new bricks, wood, and materials should be used when building a new house. Materials from an old building should not usually be used to build a new one in case those old materials repeat negative incidents that occurred in the old house. There is unhappiness in using old things. If there are old materials available, better to sell them and use the money to buy new materials. Wood from thorny trees should not be used, as it will have a negative effect. Materials that have been stored for a long time should also not be used. Iron grills should only be used when needed. Shape of the Land The best properties are either square or rectangular. If the plot is not a perfect rectangle, it is best if at least the southwest and southeast sides of the land are at 90 angles from one another. The southwest side of the quadrilateral should definitely not be extended past the southeast side, even if that means giving away a portion of the plot. Land that extends past the northeast side of the quadrilateral, however, brings wealth, happiness, and good name. Land extending on the northeast side is very good. Extensions on any other side are inauspicious. Extensions of the northwest side will cause you to lose money and peace. If the land is cut in the corner this is not good. If possible the land to fill in the missing corner should be purchased. If the land is cut short on the northeast side it is very bad and is not aspicious; do not purchase it. It is like a headless body. Round, oval, and triangular plots should be avoided. The house should not be built in the shape of a diamond, with the corner facing north. L-shaped plots are also inauspicious and should not be purchased. It is good if the plot is narrower at the entrance and wider at its rear, but the opposite is not good. Well or Water Source It is advised that the first construction project for the new house is to dig the well. If water is used from this well for the construction, it is auspicious for the family who will live in the house. It is best that the well or water source is on the north or northeast side of the land, or if water comes from the municipality, it should enter from the northeast side. If you draw a line from the southeast corner to the northeast corner, the well should be to the right or left of the line, not on it. The well can also be in the north or east sides of the property. The well should not be in the northwest or southeast corners, as this is inauspicious. It is especially inauspicious if the well is dug in the southwest corner. It is also inauspicious to have a well in the middle of a house. Wells should be round. Ideally, the well water should be exposed to sunlight for five hours a day. It is not recommended to share wells between two properties.

The well should be dug after puja (worship) has been performed on the land at an astrologically auspicious time. This will insure that the water will be pure. The well should be dug under an auspicious star, such as Rohini, Hasta, Uttara Bhadrapada, Uttara, etc. It should be dug on an auspicious daya Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The well should be dug during a downward-facing constellation or star, such as, Krittika, Purva Phalguni, Mula, Bharani, Ashlesha, Purva Bhadrapada, or Purvashadha.Water departing from thekitchen and bathroom should flow to the northeast and leave the house from this side. Compound Wall and Gate The compound wall should be built before the house is constructed. Construction should begin during an auspicious constellation, and on a favorable day a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. It should also be begun during an auspicious day of the lunar month Pratipada, Panchami, Shashthi, Dashami, Ekadashi, or Purnima. The compound wall should not be higher than the house, and construction of it should begin on the southwest side. The southwest part of the wall should be higher than the rest of the wall. The walls on the north and east sides should be 53cm (21 inches) shorter than on the west and south sides. If this is not possible, then the north and east sides should be a minimum of 8cm (3 inches) shorter. Do not set the gate on the south side. It is best that there are two gates to the compound, so evil things entering one gate will exit from the other. Outside of Main Building It is best if the house is built on the southwest section of the land. Any open space should be to the north and east. Open space on the west side of the land is not good for the familys male members. It is also good to keep a tulasi plant in the northeast corner. The electric generators should be situated on the southeast section of the plot, not the northeast, which is inauspicious. Loud machinery should not be placed near the house. If there is to be a swimming pool, waterfalls, or fountains, they should be set to the north, east, or northeast. Gardens, plants, or the lawns should also be set to the north, east, or northeast. Plants should be less than 1m (3 ft) in height. Swings should be to the north or east, and should swing from east to west. Outdoor seats should be placed in the south or west of the open area, and people should face north or east while sitting. It is considered inauspicious to block the entrance to a house, such as with a tree or telephone pole. If one of these thi ngs is more than twice the distance of the houses height away, it will not have any effect.Trash or dirty water should not be kept near a houses entrance (or the entrance to a place of business), and neither should it be kept near the propertys entrance. An unclean stream or pool of unclean water should not be located in front of the house.Annexes or outhouses should not be on the north or east sides of the house, and they definitely should not touch the eastern or northern boundary walls. A garage, building, or servants quarters built separately from the house should be located to the southeast or northwest of the main house but should not touch any of the boundary

walls. Ideally such quarters should not touch the southeast corner, but should be slightly west (without touching the east wall). They should also not touch the northwest corner but should be slightly south (without touching the north wall). They should be established about 1m (3 ft) from the wall. Parking Cars should be parked facing east or north. A car should never be parked facing south. If a car is parked facing west or northwest, the owner will spend a long time traveling. The parking lot should be in the northwest corner of the property. It should not be located to the southwest or northeast. Parking can also be located in the basement, on the north or east side. A parking garage should not be connected to the compound wall or the main building. The parking garage should be painted a light color, not a dark color. Roof The roof of the house should slope towards the northeast and rainwater should flow to the north, east, or northeast direction. Balconies and Verandahs Balconies, verandahs, and terraces should ideally be built on the north, northeast, or east sides of the house, not on the south or west sides. If a balcony is on the southwest side of a house, it should be covered and closed. The floor or roof over a balcony or terrace should be lower than the floor or roof of the main building. It is best if the verandahs roof is slanted tow ard the northeast. Tin is a good roofing material for such structures. The verandahs corners should not be rounded, and balconies should not have arches.Flowerpots on the verandah should be small. No creepers should be planted on a verandah. The seats on the verandah should be set on the south or west sides. Shoes can be removed and placed on the verandah. They should not be placed to the northeast. Inside the Building Furniture, such as sofas, should be placed in the southeast, south, or west sides of a room. The houses owner should sit facing north or east, and his guests should sit facing west or south. It is best that the northeast corner of each room in the house be left empty. If furniture must be set in the northeast corner, it should be set 15cm (six inches) from the wall. Do not align doors within the house. One door should not lead directly into another. It is best when a student studies that he face north, northeast, or east. Therefore a table in a study room should be placed in the south or west sides of the room. Books should be stored in the southwest side of the room. Do not keep money in a place facing south. When one prays, he should face either north or east.

Beds should face either west or south to insure that when a person rises in the morning, he is facing either north or east. While asleep, one should place his head to the south, east, or west, not north. If ones place of worship is in the bedroom (in the northeast), one should sleep with his head facing east to avoid pointing his feet toward the altar.Mirrors should be placed on the north or east walls, not on the south or west walls. Do not keep broken mirrors in the house. Clocks should be placed on the west, north, or east walls. Clothes should be washed in the southeast corner of the house. Medicine should be kept in the northeast corner of the house, and a person should face northeast while taking it. It is best to nurse those who are ill in the southwest corner of the house, although the northwest corner is also good. Rainwater and wastewater should leave the house from the northeast side. It should flow west to east or south to north. There should be an even number of columns and beams in the house, not odd. Doors should generally be made from a single piece of wood and should open on the left side. A television can be placed in the southeast side of a room. An overhead water tank should be located in the southwest side of a building. Stairways should be on the south, southwest, or west sides of a building. Certain pictures should not be hung in a house such as nudes, animals fighting, captured elephants, hunting scenes, trees without fruits or flowers, snakes, owls, bats, vultures and pigeons. Entrance Gate and Main Door The main door of the house should be larger than the other doors entering the house. The main door should have two shutters and open to the inside of the building. Teak is a good material for the entrance door. It is best that a house has two entrances. The exit door should be smaller than the entrance, and it should have only one shutter. If there are two external doors for the house, they should not be set in a straight line. When one enters the house, there should not be a wall in front of the entrance. There should be a door that opens to the next room. A shadow should not fall on the main door. The main door of the house should not be below ground. Neither should the main door be in the center of the house, nor in the extreme corners. If the door is set in the north wall, move it east of center; if its in the east wall, move it north of center. If it is set in the south wall, it should be moved east of center; if it is in the west wall, move it south of center. Some authorities say that if the houses entrance is in the west wall. It should be centered. Some Vastu authorities say that to figure out where to place a main door, divide the house into nine parts. The door should be in the fourth section of the house from the left hand side. From the right side of the house, the entrance is in the sixth division from the right.

The main door should not be situated across from the main door of another house. The entrance doors of two houses should not be exactly opposing one another. Neither should two houses share a common entrance. If the entrance of the house is to the south, there should not be a balcony or verandah in front of the door. It is good to set gates to both the property and the entrance to the house on the north or east sides. It is also all right to have the main door on the west wall. It is not advised to have the main entrance on the south side. It is considered auspicious if the entrance to the property and the main door of the house are on the same side. It is not considered good if the main door to the house is on the opposite side to the entrance of the property. There should not be an underground tank, septic tank, or canal under the main entrance. There should not be any abandoned, wrecked buildings in front of the main entrance. It is good to decorate a houses entrance with pictures or statues of Laksmi, Ganesh or Kuvera and auspicious signs such as OM or the Swastika. Inauspious pictures should not be on the door. Doors should have thresholds. Shoes should not be kept in front of the door, but to the side. The door should not be slanted, sliding, or circular. Overhead Water Tank The overhead water tank should be in the southwest (best) or west corners of the building. An overhead water tank should not be located in the northeast or southeast corners, or in the middle of the roof. It is also best that it is not located in the northwest unless the tank is small and is located approximately 1m (2 or 3 ft) from the buildings corner. The tank should be elevated at least 1m (2 or 3 ft) above the roof, on a platform. If possible, the tank should not be made of plastic. If it must be plastic, however, it should either be black or dark blue plastic, because such colors aid the absorption of sunlight. A dark water tank while absorbing sun for heat doesnt encourage microbial growth as quickly as a lightcolored tank would do.If possible, there should be different tanks for the kitchen and bathrooms. The House It is best if the buildings walls are higher on the west and south sides and lower on the north and east sides. Also, the south and west walls should be thicker than the north and east walls, if possible. The walls should be painted yellow, because yellow leads to an increase of wealth. If a safe is large, it can be placed in the south, southwest, or west sides of the house, but it should always be set a few inches from the wall. It should not be in the southwest or southeast corner, and should definitely not be in a northeast corner. The safe should face north and open toward the north or east. It is inauspicious to have a safe opening to the souththis will cause a loss of money. Bathrooms can be on the west or northwest sides of the building, but not on the eastern or northeastern sides. The toilet room should also not be located on the southeast, the southwest, or in the center of the building. The morning sun falling on the body after bathing is good, so windows should be set in the north or east sides of the room. Ideally, toilets should face south, not east or west (in the direction of the sun). The toilet should be located on the west or northwest side of the room and should be built 30 60cm (1 or 2 feet) above the ground. An attached bathroom should be on the west or northwest side of a room, never on the northeast side. The staircase should go up from east to west or north to south. The same stairway that goes to the upper floor should not also go down to the basement. Stairways should be built with an odd number of stairs9, 11, or 15 steps, for example. The number of stairs should not end with a zero if you must build an even number there should not be 10 or 20 stepsbecause it is best to begin climbing steps with the right foot

and also to end the climb on the right foot. This is not possible when there is an even number of stairs. The right foot is equated with gain, the left with loss.Circular stairways are not good. The doorway at the top of the stairway should be at least 20cm (8 inches) lower than the doorway at the bottom of the stairs. Broken stairs should be repaired immediately to avoid accidents. The stairway should be painted a light color. The worship room, safe, or toilet should not be located under a staircase. Basement Basements should ideally not be built under the entire house. If that is impossible, use only the northeast section. Heavy equipment can be kept on the south and west sides. It is best that the basement should only be in the northeast side of a house. It is also said that the number of doors and windows on the upper floor should not equal the amount of doors and windows on the ground floor. The ceiling height of the rooms on the upper floor should be less than the ceiling height of the rooms on the ground floor. If only part of the upper floor is used, this part should be built in the southwest area. The balcony should be on the north, east, or northeast side. The balcony should not be in the southwest corner. Bedrooms and studies should be located on the upper floor. A storage area for heavy items should be located on the lower floor, and not the upper. Trees and Plants It is always good to grow a tulasi plant on ones property. Tulasi should be located on the north, northeast, or east sides of the house, or in front of the house. Trees should not be planted directly in front of the houses main entrance. There should be an even number of trees on ones property, not an odd number.Trees should be planted on the south or west sides of the house. Ideally, they should be planted on both these sides rather than on only one side. It is not good to plant a tall tree on the north, northeast, or east sides of a building. Smaller trees may be planted on the east or north sides, but no trees should be planted in the northeast corner. Tall trees should not be too close to a building as they block the sunlight. A trees shadow should not fall on the house.Large trees should not be located too near the house as their roots can damage the foundation and compound wall. Also, the roots of large trees absorb sunlight quickly, meaning these positive rays will not be received by the building. Do not allow tree branches to touch the house. Stone sculptures and rock gardens should be located on the southwest side of the house because they are heavy. Thorny plants should not be planted near the house. Cactus should not be planted at all. Thorny plants other than roses have a negative energy. Ideally all thorny plants should be pulled up and destroyed. A list of good trees to plant: coconut, neem, betal, sandalwood, lemon, pineapple, bilva, almond, jackfruit, pomegranate, mango, amla, and katha. Banyan and pipal (aswatha) are sacred trees; they should usually only be planted near a temple or at a sacred place. Creepers or other plants should not be grown by using the building or compound wall as support. Creepers should only be grown in a garden, and they should have their own independent supports.

Plants should be planted during auspicious constellations. Saplings should first be planted in clay pots and only later placed in the ground. This enables them to grow better. If a tree must be removed because it is inauspicious or for other reasons, it should be removed in the months of Magh or Bhadrapada. The day before cutting the tree, worship it and express regret that it must be removed from its rooting. Promise to plant a new tree in its place. Do so within three months. When cutting the tree, it should fall east or north, not south or west. Worship of Land Certain rituals can be performed before construction on the plot begins. The land should be installed at an auspicious time, during an auspicious constellation. Mondays and Thursdays are auspicious days for such rituals. Ideally, a qualified astrologer should set the time of installation. Worship should be done in the northeast corner of the land. Before installing the land, it should be cleared. Dirt, stones, holes in the ground, and trash should be removed. Thorny bushes should also be uprooted and removed. The installation should not be done if a woman in the household is more than seven months pregnant. The groundbreaking ceremony for the house should only be done during the Uttarayan period, when the sun is in the northern hemisphere, and when the days are longer than the nights, from June 21 through December 20. House Warming Before entering a new house, a house-warming ceremony should be performed. A good time to enter a new house is in the period of Uttarayan, from June 21 through December 20, in the months of Vaishaka, Shravan, and Margashirsh, in the constellation of Uttara, Magha, Ashwini, Swati, Pushya, and Revati, on an auspicious day. It is good to confirm this time with a qualified astrologer. Ganesh-puja, Navagraha-puja (worship of the nine planets), and worship of the Vastupratima (building deity) should be performed. The residents of the building should then circumambulate the building. Then puja should be done to the threshold. Purchasing the Adjacent Plot If one wishes to purchase the land adjacent to ones own property, it should be purchased on a Monday, Thursday, or Friday, during an auspicious constellation such as Vaishaka, Purva, Ashlesha, Mrig, Revati, Mul, or Anuradha. The land one already owns can be extended to the north, east, or northeast. The northwest corner should not be extended. If a plot is available in the southwest, west, or south sides, it should not be purchased, as it will cause misfortune and loss. If the northeast plot is available, purchase it. It is best if the adjacent lot on the northeast side is at a lower elevation than the land already owned. If such land is purchased, the dividing wall should be taken down. As far as possible, you should not construct buildings on this land.

Chinese people have many things that we dont understand but we still except their superstitions.

Why are you afraid of the number 13? Can you explain why is it so bad? Some people on the contrast love this number and it brings them luck. I think, that meaning of numbers is only our perception of what they are. Lets see what Chinese do if they have bad numbers in their phone number, car numbers, apartment, etc.

Why numbers are divided on good and bad:

1) Yang energy is active and goes for prosperity, future and growth. This is the main reason why odd numbers are said to be better. 2) Chinese think that numbers can improve their life. They dont consider numbers as superstition. And we think that some numbers are very bad and we dont have the reason why we think so, just know that it was always bad, but dont know why. 3) How the number sounds? Cantonese and Western people speak different languages, but we take their meaning for some numbers. Number 4 is death for Cantonese, and for English speaking person it can sound like more.

Numbers are divided:

1) Yin and Yang the well known symbols of balance. Numbers are divided on yin and yang. They should also be balance.

If you have several numbers, then these numbers should be 50/50% yin and yang. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 odd numbers have yang energy. 2, 4, 6, 8 even numbers are yin. 2) Elements 1- water 2, 5, 8 earth 3, 4 wood 6, 7 metal 9 fire

0 is perfection, nothing, harmony and completion.

zero is a good number 1 and 9 are good numbers.

number one is a good and auspicious number Number 1 is unity and number 9 is longevity or enough. These two numbers combine well with other lucky numbers. BUT 9 has the bigger Yang energy comparing to others.

It implies the onset of decline, therefore combination numbers like39, 69 and 89, while they sound good, imply over development. For the same reason 999 is not a good number because it is has too many yang numbers and the only way for it to go is down, because the follow up number is 1000.

1000 means beginning of a new cycle after you tried so long. I am sure that you are not going to starting all over again. In the past, Nine is reserved for the Emperor and ordinary people were not allowed to use number 9. The doors to the imperial palace were all decorated with (99) 81 brass knobs to signify the majesty of the Emperor. We know from history what happened to all Emperors, they get overthrown in the end. So if you have good ego and strong desire for the constant renewal, do not choose 9, 99 or 999. Two is not too bad.

number two is a good number It is the first of the yin numbers. Sound as easy or yi in Cantonese. Place number 2 before lucky numbers, so that it will sound like easy luck. For example the numbers 23, 26, 28 and 29 are good. They sound as easily growing, easily profitable, easily prosperous and easily enough in Cantonese respectively. BUT try to avoid putting number 2 in front of unlucky sounding numbers like 4 (death or dying). The number 24 is considered unlucky, because it sounds the same as easily dying and 2424 is a very bad number.

Three

number three is auspicous Sounds like growth and alive and is a lucky number to have.

Four sounds like death (sie) in Cantonese.

number four is inauspicious in some places

Most Chinese avoid number 4 because of this bad sounding. Number 4 is also pictured like the sun is being obscured by a cloud. Cloudy day is the image of number 4. The Chinese do not like to have a house or a car with the number 4 or a combination like 14 must die, 24 easily dying, 44 dying and dead and 74 surely dead. BUT 4 is considered auspicious when it is used with the 5 or number8. 54 sounds like shall live forever and will not die. 58 sounds the same as sure to prosper. 84 sounds the same as forever prosperous. 104 is also considered unlucky. 13 is the most mystical number that people dont like (although some people adore this number and it brings luck for them). I will open the secret of scary number 13. 13 is concidered unlucky, because when you add 1 + 3 = 4. Sounds again like Death.

Five sounds the same as nothing in Cantonese.

number five is neutral: not bad and not good

The best friend for the number 5 is the unlucky 4, but not the lucky8. 54 sounds like not dying and 58 sounds like not prosperous in Cantonese.

Six is also an auspicious number.

six is an auspicious number

Firstly, because it sounds as profitable or luk in Cantonese. Secondly, 6 is twice 3. 3 is a lucky number primary number since it takes a minimum of 3 points to create a geometrical shape. Twice 3, that is 6 is the beginning of all things. 6 means progress and doubling of everything that you started with.

This is the reason why Chinese like three digit numbers like 326 and666. Seven sounds as for sure (chut) or certainty.

auspisous number seven Best numbers to combine with number 7 are 2 and 8. 72 and 78 sound the same as certainly easy and prosperous for sure respectively in Cantonese. BUT try to avoid putting a 7 before unlucky numbers like 4, 74. They sound like dead for sure.

Eight is considered good number.

eight is a good number It sounds like prosperous or fa in Cantonese.

Number 8 has more YIN energy then others. The Chinese believe that if you are not lucky, the only way for you with number 8 is to go up. Number 8 changes bad luck to good luck. In business, three digit numbers are very popular (328 and 888 ), because they sound the same as thrice prosperous and business will easily prosper. Three digit are preferred, because 3 is a yang number that means liveliness or san in Cantonese.

good number nine

Good Combinations
The numbers that start with 1,2,3,6 and 8 or a combination will always sound lucky. 8, 18, 28, 38, 48, 54, 68, 80, 84, 88, 99, 168 & 108 are all good numbers. You can choose which you like, but try to have he number balanced with yin and yang energies. For example 3388, 1618 and 1328 are all very auspicious, because they have a combination of two yang numbers and two yin numbers. Such combinations are balanced and very lucky to have them in your life.

Dont worry if you have unlucky number!

Cure Number 1.
Paint two red dots near the number.

For example if you have a unlucky 4 or 14 in the number of your house, then just paint it like 4 or 14 with numbers in black and the dots in red. A dot or zero symbolizes nothingness; a pair of them in red will nullify any unluckiness associated with the number. This cure only works if the numbers are written down. For mobile or telephone numbers, you need to actually change the numbers to change your luck.

Cure Number 2.
Good and cheap cure is to draw a circle around your number

Cure Number 3.

If you have time and money, then go to your local store and find one of ceramic door numbers with a circle around the number. Do not be afraid of numbers. Numerology is to serve us, like Feng Shui. Choose a house, a unit and a car that you really like first, then worry about the numbers. Numbers by themselves do not have any power. They work if you believe in their power. If you can change and if you have good numbers in your life, then be happy, but if you dont then just dont mind) There are numerous factors that influence our lives, and we just can guess which of those influence us more)

Numerology and the Double-Digit Numbers.

The meaning of the double digit numbers 10 through 99 can be found further down the page. However, for an understanding of how the double-digit numbers influence a chart, please read this excerpt first.

The double-digit numbers

So far, we have worked only with single-digit numbers in your chart, with the exception of the Master numbers and the Karmic Debt numbers. Now, let's look at the numbers 10 and up. Every one of the cardinal numbers can be based on several different compound numbers. The 7, for instance, can be based on 16, 25, 34, 43, 52, 61, or 70. (It cannot be based on 79 or 88 except indirectly, because 79 and 88 are 16.) When a 7 is based on 25, it is slightly different from a 7 based

on 34 or 61. For this reason, I have made it a habit to include the double-digit numbers in the chart. I write a 7 based on 25 in this manner: 25/7; and a 7 based on 34 like this: 34/7. Now that you have come this far in the book, your understanding of the meaning of numbers is sufficient to analyze the double-digit numbers. A double-digit number's characteristics are dominated by that of the single digit it represents. First and foremost, it is that cardinal number. The double-digit number highlights certain aspects, and diminishes others, but it never eliminates any aspect completely. You may want to study the double-digit numbers in your personal chart to see if you can gain additional insight or clarity. For example, a 7 based on 25 is not as withdrawn as a 7 based on a 16. A 7 based on 34 is more creative that the 7 based on a 25. The already considerable leadership ability of a 1 is enhanced in the 10. As a rule, numbers that are dividable by 10 strengthen the characteristics of the single-digit number across the board. A 10 is a high octave 1, a 40 is a high octave 4, and a 70 is a high octave 7. Below is a short description of double-digit numbers 10 through 99. As an exercise, you may want to contemplate a few double-digit numbers, then see if you picked the same main points as those described below. Vastu Directions

Directions are nothing but heart of a human body. Heart is most important to a human body, like wise directions also important to the vastu shastra. How to find out the directions, its very simple.

Stand before Sun, that is the East, i.,e you are viewing east direction, our back side is West, our left hand side is North and our right hand side is South. Here you may got one doubt, at some places we cannot see the sun because of clouds then how to find out the directions, yes you are almost right, and your doubt is very valuable, at this moment we must have compass, compass is like this way.,

the below is the compass, from this instrument we can easily find out directions at morning and night also, at any season we can easily find out the directions. For more information on compass, click here Have you seen this above compass, its very useful for finding the directions. Here see this below picture, how the compass is rotating. This flash file helps you how to know the directions. For more information on compass, click here

The above flash sun raising picture is only for your information about directions. As you already know that we have four directions and each direction has its own specific significance. Different planets are attributed to different directions and since each planet has its distinctive colour thus each direction also gets its auspicious colour. North direction - Green East direction - White South direction - Red West direction - Blue. See this below picture to know about directions and auxiliary directions.

Observe some numbers in the above map...45, 90, 135, 180 etc means "degrees". Now we will know some thing about directions and its lords etc. Vaasthu Couplet: Vaastu offers not only wealth on earth, but also bliss in the celestial world

The meeting of two directions is called as "Junction", "Corners" or "Meeting Points", generally people called it as 'Corners'. A corner or a junction is more powerful than any direction. The corner has mixed forces of two directions. Hence the corners should be properly planned during construction of your beloved properties for better results. Similarly every house has got the same eight directions, but their effect differ, depending upon their usages and managements. If every direction is perfectly used and maintained according to the rules of Vasthu, the house safeguards the resident, like a mother who secures her child. If we done opposite for direction rules then the residence will become hell ( Devils den ). You please to understand the hidden meaning of it., the effect of directions depends upon on how the person is utilizing them. For Example take one northeast (eshan) corner, if at one house northeast corner is in good position according to vaastu shastra he will enjoy prosperity, richness, successful life. If the northeast corner is closed, or it disturbed we cannot think about his position, he will loose every thing or he may be loosed ( disappears ), not knowing the truth behind the Vastu many people are inviting troubles and tensions, unnecessarily. There is certain impact of Vaastu on human existence and this is a totally fact and proved one. By knowing certain principles of vastu man lives and tastes the richness of happy. Vastu shastra is a mighty ocean. The importance of orientation of a building is not only for saving energy but also to have a better house design, which not only gives comfortable living but also gives good health, prosperity and wealth to the house owners/occupiers and these families. There lies a co-relation between the rotational scenario of the planets and the house design and their different directions with respect of NORTH. The building of any type and its construction meets the purpose if proper orientation has been given using suitable local building material. It increases not only its life span but also improves the condition of occupants. There are instances where buildings are not planned according to required local orientation were lost or deteriorated much faster then the buildings having built with proper studies of orientation. The proper orientation means the proper knowledge of all the eight directions. It is a common knowledge that the direction from where the Sun arises is known as east and where it sets as West and when one faces the East direction, towards one's left is north and towards one's right is south. The corner where two directions meet obviously is more significant since it combines the forces emanating from both the directions. SO in all there are eight directions, North, Northeast, East, Eastsouth, South, Southwest, West, Westnorth. Every direction has its own significance and has its own construction. The basic rules of vaastu Shastra are based on these eight directions.

Please observe the side moving flash file, in this picture one's house or plot is appearing, here East is above side and North is at left side. In between i.e. the corner of the East and North directions is called Eshan Corner or Ishan or Northeast Direction, in other words the junction in between east and north is called Eshan corner. This Eshan corner place is most important at Vaastu shastra. This Eshan blesses inmates, development in their respective fields. So every house owner has to take care on Eshan corner, Eshan should not loss. If so the entire family development system will spoils. If

Eshan rises at ones house we can clearly observes improvement in his day to day life. If you feels that Eshan has any defects at your house, then immediately get suggestion from one experienced vastu expert.

Brahmasthana - Definition and Importance

The Brahmasthana (central portion of the plot) is an important factor to be reckoned while constructing a building, be it an office or a house. The Brahmasthana is the region around the navel (Nabhi) of the Vastu Purusha (site deity). The energy lines running through the center of the plot are also equally important. Much care should be taken in building a structure, so that these lines are not disturbed. Vastu recomends that the Brahmasthana of the building should always be left empty. The center of the building is selected as an intersent of two diagonal lines from the four corners of the plot; and the same is done with all the interior rooms. No pillars and no rooms should be contructed at this place, and no heavy furniture should be kept in the centre of any room. Only carpets, rugs etc. can be kept at this place.

Vastu For Selection of Paint Colors

Color has a profound effect on our mood. In clothing , interiors , landscape and even

natural light , a color can change mood from sad to happy, from confusion to intelligence , from fear to confidence. Particular colors have different effects on each individual. Response to a color may be influenced by a number of factors such as the body's need for a specific color , a sad or happy memory associated with a color. In previous decades , certain colors or group of colors dominated every palette . Now in millennium , the stopper is out and uniqueness and personal preferences are really in. There are no absolutes in the world of color. Some colors make you want to get out of your chair , others make you want to nestle down and read. Some colors are articulate and must be listened to. Others are very quiet . Some colors indicate that you have traveled or are well read. Yet others create a desire for closeness , intimacy and love. Following are some of the most typical responses to various color groups. Nurturing Neutrals These colors create a sense of peace and well being. They foster quiet conversation with family and friends and can dispel loneliness. Throughout time , mankind has found a sense of peace and tranquility when in touch with "Mother Earth" . It follows that colors which impart a sense of warmth and serenity come directly from the earth. In addition to the earth colors in the neutral group are colors associated with sea such as sand , shell , coral , pearl , stone , seaweed. GREEN is a color which helps us to adjust to new environments and situations. It will always be found among the 'nurturing neutrals'. The BLUES represented here will range from winter sky to

stream to midnight. The neutrals are somewhat like the furniture while other palettes are more like accents or accessories. Intellectual Colors
These are the sharp , witty and unique colors which convey a message that the owner has traveled , is well read and has something to say. These colors will command respect without being overbearing. This palette also starts with a earthy , warm base. Gray is a color which promotes creativity and will often be found in foundation of an intellectual palette. These grays will be warm and gentle. Some tones of blue suggest communication and trust , so it will naturally be found in the intellectual palette. Navy blues will often find their way in this palette , but its effect is warm and never cold and fragile. Red also appears in this intellectual palette , but the shades will be earthy and complicated burgundy , cranberry.

Playful Colors These colors are exiting and used for a fun providing environment These playful , whimsical palettes create their own kind of music , like the sounds of children playing. There are highs and lows, lights and darks and always movement and activity. Used in active spaces within the home , a 'playful' palette can add energy and vitality. But if overdone , this type of palette becomes irritating and stressful. The foundation of this palette is WHITE . This could be anywhere from vanilla ice cream to snow drift to winter moon. Then comes the bubble gum pink, buttercup, wintergreen, all the berry colors and crayon colors. Many of these colors will be cool, and even in lighter tones there will be brightness and clarity. The bottom line in creating this type of palette is that the colors should suggest a sense of freedom , play and downright fun. Healing Colors

This palette includes the colors which are very refreshing and rejuvenating. Like nurturing colors , 'healing colors' also begin by getting in touch with nature. The first group of colors considered in this palette is GREEN. Because they have the power to help us adjust to new environments , skillful designers use lots of plants and other forms of green . Healing greens may be warm or cool , but not muddy or mysterious like those in the intellectual palette. Healing palettes also take inspirations from warn earth tones. These palettes usually contains contrast as well as a clarity of color that is inspiring. They will include a range of lights and darks but will never be muddy. Romantic Colors Many species including the human beings attempt to attract the opposite sex with colors. RED is the color of sex and lust and is often called the most romantic of colors. It is no accident that red is the chosen symbolic color for the Valentine's Day. In interior design , however , a less intense , softer tone of red is far more conducive to romance than the pure hue. Often referred as PINKS , these colors vary from cool to warm and from light to dark. Pinks have an interesting quality that seems to halt the body's ability to stay angry. PURPLE is another color which is definitively romantic because of its passionate , unpredictable and quixotic characteristics. Paler , less intense tones of ORANGE such as apricot and peach are often included in the romantic palette , suggesting purity and innocence. BLUES in the romantic palette will be cool and inspired by water. Personal Style

There are no trends in color as important as personal style. Today , most designers draw from many historical periods as well as contemporary influences and mix them together to create unique personal spaces. The most effective color palettes reflect and enhance the interests , collections and activities of the people who live there as well as architectural features. The effects of color on mood will vary from individual to individual. Color schemes have emotional messages too. An awareness of the emotions generated by different colors is helpful in planning personal palettes that will be pleasant to live with , but it must be understood that this information is not absolute. Subtle changes in tone can increase or decrease the emotions evoked by a particular color , allowing it to be included in many diverse palettes.

Lighting
Lighting According To Vastu

There are three basic types of lighting which are categorized according to the intensity of the light used. 1. General lighting - It supplies an overall illumination in the area. 2. Task lighting - It supplies the required illumination for specific tasks such as reading , painting etc. It directs strong local illumination without high general illumination as required for activities carried in a particular area. 3. Accent lighting - It offers a decorative element to the area by highlighting the particular objects or features in the area. They are auxiliary to the general lighting and provide an added , and at times , dramatic dimensions to the scheme. Spaces can be provided with one , two or all types of these lightings , depending upon the requirement . With different types of lighting in each room and dimmers to adjust the intensity of light , an ordinary space can be infused with much dramatic look to convey different moods to suit different times of the day. Light can define space , substance and style. Outdoors , with the shifting sun and atmospheric conditions , light and the shadows change the appearance of things natural and man made. But in the indoors, the play of natural and artificial lighting largely determine both function and decoration. Today lighting is considered to be a very important element of decorating scheme. The invention of the incandescent bulb in 1978 revolutionized lighting systems as it allowed light to be easily manipulated. Apart from exploiting natural light by using opaque or transparent glass walls , sky lights , large windows etc. for offices , architect work out the detailed light fittings

which are conducive for a work environment . In homes , a careful selection of lights extends and enhances the aesthetics of interiors. Similarly for hotels , showrooms , museums , gardens , water bodies , individual lighting requirements are worked out. Artificial light falling from various angles and heights on different surfaces guide us to perceive various features and dimensions while creating a specific mood. With technological developments and the stress on precision lighting , a variety of lighting fixtures are readily available with options which offer manifold possibilities in terms of effect. The choice of fitting according to the room , gets very difficult , one gets puzzled off as there are so many varieties in lights like the table lamps , spot lights , clamp lights , recessed / surface mounted lights , uplighters , halogens , incandescent bulb , pendants , fluorescent fixtures and lots of others. Once the basic idea of the space , mood , interior design , highlighting , function of work have been specified , one can then consider the basic types of lighting. Initially only the planned positions of lights need to be decided. Later , the selection of bulbs and the exact effect can be created. One should always keep in mind some of the basic rules while designing the light. Every activity that takes place in the interior must have lights of the right kind , intensity and the right direction. The eye prefers even lighting with the minimum of contrast between the brightness of the room surfaces and the lighting fixtures. The eye works best when the work surface is more brightly lit then the surroundings. The eye is stimulated by the contrast of tone and sparkle. When room lighting change , color changes or disappear , thus objects become

more or less important in the room. BATHROOM LIGHTNING Planning and designing is a tedious job. Today's bathroom wears a well dressed look , its design recognizing people's needs to begin and end their day in pleasant surroundings. It is after all an intimate personal place- perhaps the only room in the house where one can be totally private and get much needed peace. For a relatively small room , the bath area can use a no. of different types of lighting. General lighting is essential in a compact bath , a central ceiling may suffice. Medium size and large size baths and especially those with sectioned areas for tub , shower and toilet will require several overhead fixtures. The lights are general , recessed into the ceilings or those over a tub or a shower must be watertight and vapour proof . A minimum of 100W incandescent or 60W fluorescent lamp is sufficient. The most critical lighting in a bath centers around the mirror area , this is the basic for good grooming. For shaving , make up applications hair care , light should be soft and diffused without glare or shadow. Avoid lighting the mirror itself rather light of the person looking into the mirror . The most efficient to light up a person's face is to use three fixtures , one on either side of the mirror and one overhead. Side fixtures should be mounted 30" - 36" apart on the wall and install about 60" above the floor. Incandescent fixtures should have a minimum of 75W bulb and fluorescent tubes on either side of 20W and one tube of 30W or two tubes of 15W overhead. Additional bath lighting for specific purposes may include plant lights to take the advantage of bath humidity for growing the flowers and ferns. READING ROOM

The study is the most important room for the intellectuals , for students as this is the room where one builds his carrer. In the reading room , one should plan the lights very carefully as the intensity affects a lot on the eyes thus on the health. In a study , the priority is to provide adequate illumination for reading and writing. For maximum pleasure of reading and for easier concentration , reading lamps must have a proper quality and quantity of illumination and be placed so that the light falls comfortably on the open page. The complete room may be lit with powerful uplighters , downlighters , or the general lighting may be reduced to be supplemented with task lights as required . For the study it is necessary that task lights be supported with general illumination even if it is of low intensity to avoid eye strain. Care should be taken where computers are placed , the task light should not produce glare or reflections on the screen. Task lights for writing should be positioned so as to avoid both glare and shadow. If floor lamps are used as reading lights , then it should be 40"-49" from the floor to the bottom edge of the shade. The shade should be moderately illuminous to softly diffuse the light and eliminate glare , thus open top shades are preferred.

BEDROOM The bedroom is a place where one can be totally oneself. It is the room where we spend the maximum amount of time - to sleep , relax and unwind , after a long tiring day and rejuvenate oneself for the tomorrow. The lighting should be a soothing general illumination . If want to highlight some paintings or photographs , one can go for a task lighting in this area. Uplighters look very beautiful , dimmers can be very useful to play with the intensity of the light as per mood. Lights should be planned in such a way that it must create a light , romantic ,

relaxing environment. Table lamps or hanging lamp shades provides the room a very aesthetic look. SWIMMING POOL / FOUNTAINS Water presents a challenging and rewarding medium for lighting . Swimming pools , fountains , waterfalls magically come to life with lighting effects at night. For effective swimming pool lighting , the lights are generally set below the water level , into the sides of the pool. This should be done while the construction of the pool so as to keep the wiring away from water. The lights should be placed to shimmer down the deep end of the pool. Fountains are effectively lit by submerged narrow beam sources set near the base of each jet or falling on the flowing water casting a color and sparkle on it. Waterfall comes to life when lit from behind. GARDEN Garden is a place where man interacts and is near to the mother nature even at the time when we are on the verge of destroying it. Lighting should be planned according to desired landscape lighting effects as well as providing adequate light for walking , security etc. All lights , wiring and metal work should be able to resist weather conditions for a prolonged period of time like dust , moisture and corrosion. The lighting should illuminate select areas , should create striking effects and keeps what is to be concealed in shadows. Thus , the way of lighting drastically changes the way of living and mood of the environment. So one must be very careful while planning the lights and choosing the fixtures as in the end , if worked carelessly , it can result into mis match of everything. MAINTAINING THE LIGHTING SYSTEM The term lighting refers to the useful energy output of a system consisting of light

sources , fixtures to support them in appropriate locations , wiring channels to activate the light sources and the convenient electrical controls. Here are the tips on how to maintain the lighting system in different rooms according to the ambience . LIVING ROOM lighting : The living room is the core of domestic life. People decorate them according to their interest , but the one element that is common to all is the intangible style , which is not dictated by prevailing trends or large amounts of money. Here are some basics how to illuminate it properly. Establish an adequate general illumination level to reduce the accent light , brightness , contrast. Illuminate an entire wall with overhead fixtures to provide background for room furnishings. Feature window areas with the cosmic lighting. Indirect light like that under a pelment or above a cabinet will supply soft uniform illumination. Use dimmers to program lighting moods. Play up with the architectural features like aala , niches , mantles etc. Highlight artwork and plants with individual lighting arrangements. Be sure that the floor , table and hanging fixtures have adequate shades to prevent glare. Plan adequate lighting to handle a variety of family activities like rack for display. DINING ROOM The decor of dining room depends upon the culture of the family. A dining room can change the style of eating. So one should be careful while playing with the lights to make the environment relax and easy. One must keep the visual emphasis off the ceiling and walls and on the dcor of food and guests. Ceiling down lights should fall and focus primarily on dining room table

surface. Candles and fuel lamps in decorative holders can add special touch to any meal. Buffey or service areas and chinaware/silverware/crockery displays deserve special lighting emphasis. KITCHEN Kitchen is a place where a lady spends her maximum time so it should have comfortable and fresh feeling. Today's kitchens are far removed from the dark dingy spaces one saw earlier. Even if there is window in the kitchen , install down lighting over a sink for cloudy days or nights. Special lighting for key work areas can be installed in the ceiling or in the upper cabinets. Provide light for storage areas in pantry or wall cabinets overhead or shelf mounted brackets will do the job.

CREATING MOOD WITH COLOR Color has a profound effect on our mood. In clothing , interiors , landscape and even natural light , a color can change mood from sad to happy , from confusion to intelligence , from fear to confidence. Particular colors have different effects on each individual . Response to a color may be influenced by a number of factors such as the body's need for a specific color , a sad or happy memory associated with a color. In previous decades , certain colors or group of colors dominated every palette . Now in millenium , the stopper is out and uniqueness and personal preferences are really in.

There are no absolutes in the world of color. Some colors make you want to get out of your chair , others make you want to nestle down and read. Some colors are articulate and must be listened to. Others are very quiet . Some colors indicate that you have travelled or are well read. Yet others create a desire for closeness , intimacy and love. Following are some of the most typical responses to various color groups. NURTURING NEUTRALS : These colors create a sense of peace and well being. They foster quiet conversation with family and friends and can dispel loneliness. Throughout time , mankind has found a sense of peace and tranquility when in touch with " Mother Earth " . The BLUES represented here will range from winter sky to stream to midnight. The neutrals are somewhat like the furniture while other palettes are more like accents or accessories. INTELLECTUAL COLORS : These are the sharp , witty and unique colors which convey a message that the owner has travelled , is well read and has something to say. These colors will command respect without being overbearing. This palette also starts with a earthy , warm base. Grey is a color which promotes creativity and will often be found in foundation of an intellectual palette. These greys will be warm and gentle. Some tones of blue suggest

communication and trust , so it will naturally be found in the intellectual palette. Navy blues will often find their way in this palette , but its effect is warm and never cold and fragile. Red also appears in this intellectual palette , but the shades will be earthy and complicated burgundy , cranburry. PLAYFUL COLORS : These colors are exiting and used for a fun providing environment These playful , whimsical palettes create their own kind of music , like the sounds of children playing. There are highs and lows , lights and darks and always movement and activity. Used in active spaces within the home , a 'playful' palette can add energy and vitality. But if overdone , this type of palette becomes irritating and stressful. The foundation of this palette is WHITE . This could be anywhere from vanilla ice cream to snow drift to winter moon. Then comes the bubble gum pink , buttercup , wintergreen , all the berry colors and crayon colors. Many of these colors will be cool , and even in lighter tones there will be brightness and clarity. The bottom line in creating this type of palette is that the colors should suggest a sense of freedom , play and downright fun. HEALING COLORS : This palette includes the colors which are very refreshing and rejuvenating. Like nurturing colors , 'healing colors' also begin by getting in touch with nature. The first group of colors considered in this palette is GREEN. Because they have the power to help us adjust to new environments , skillful designers use lots of plants and other forms of green . Healing greens may be warm or cool , but not muddy or mysterious

like those in the intellectual palette. Healing palettes also take inspirations from warn earth tones. These palettes usually contains contrast as well as a clarity of color that is inspiring. They will include a range of lights and darks but will never be muddy. ROMANTIC COLORS : Many species including the human beings attempt to attract the opposite sex with colors. PERSONAL STYLE : There are no trends in color as important as personal style. Today , most designers draw from many historical periods as well as contemporary influences and mix them together to create unique personal spaces. The most effective color palettes reflect and enhance the interests , collections and activities of the people who live there as well as architectural features. The effects of color on mood will vary from individual to individual. Color schemes

have emotional messages too. An awareness of the emotions generated by different colors is helpful in planning personal palettes that will be pleasant to live with , but it must be understood that this information is not absolute. Subtle changes in tone can increase or decrease the emotions evoked by a particular color , allowing it to be included in many diverse palettes
