Eastern graduate moves on to NFL
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
The New England Patriots se-
lected Eastern Regional High
School graduate Logan Ryan in
the third round of the 2013 draft
in April, making him the second
Eastern graduate to move on to
the NFL.
The other, Chris Canty, a defen-
sive back from Kansas State Uni-
versity, was a first-round draft
pick for the 1997 Patriots.
During his time spent at East-
ern, Ryan was the starting quar-
terback for his junior and senior
year, taking home a total of 16 vic-
tories for the Vikings, according
to head coach Dan Spittal.
Ryan threw for more than 2,500
yards and had 35 total touch-
downs as a Viking. On the defen-
sive side, Ryan had 43 tackles and
five interceptions.
According to Spittal, the team
made it to the semifinals during
Ryans junior year and quarterfi-
nals his senior year.
He was a very effective two-
way player for us. He stayed in-
jury free, which is kind of hard to
do, he said.
Spittal said Ryan was a great
leader and talented athlete. At 170
pounds, Spittal said Ryan worked
hard his junior and senior year,
managing to catch the eyes of a
few major college scouts.
Special to The Sun
Eastern Regional High School and Rutgers graduate Logan Ryan was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2013
draft in April, making him the second Eastern graduate to move on to the NFL. I felt extremely grateful. I put a lot of hard work in to get to
this point, Ryan said. I made a lot of people smile that day. please see RYAN, page 18

The Voorhees Sun
Whoever said that playing
with toys is a waste of time clear-
ly hasnt met 10-year-old Osage
Elementary School student Luke
Magette.
Luke recently created a QR
code for LEGO built entirely out
of LEGOs.
A QR (quick response) code
consists of black modules
arranged in a square grid on a
white background, which can be
read by an imaging device such
as a camera. When read by the
camera, it will direct the user to
the companys URL or a webpage
with information about the prod-
uct or event.
QR code has become a focus of
advertising strategy, since it pro-
vides quick and effortless access
to the brand's website.
Leta Strain is a teacher and en-
richment specialist at Osage Ele-
mentary School working with
students in kindergarten
through fifth grade.
The enrichment classes are for
students who are gifted and
placed in an accelerated pro-
gram. She showed her classes a
video of the marketing agency
redpepper creating a QR code
for Oreos using, you guessed it,
Oreos.
The video inspired Luke to do
the same but with LEGOs.
Luke is so animated and well-
spoken, Strain said.
After he saw the video, he im-
mediately asked if he would be
able to do the same thing with
LEGOs. I told him he should defi-
nitely try.

Ashland Church to
host Community
Picnic June 9
Looking for something to do
Sunday, June 9?
Ashland Church is hosting a
Community Picnic from 12:30
p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 33 E. Evesham
Road in Voorhees.
We have held this annual com-
munity picnic for the past three
years on the church grounds.
Featuring Games 2U (1-4 p.m.)
with on-site entertainment such
as The Giant Hamster Balls are a
unique and exciting way to expe-
rience the thrill of 360-degree fun.
Whether standing up or sitting
down, you'll have a blast rolling
around on just about any surface.
For even more fun, add a sec-
ond hamster ball to create compe-
titions. Big enough (and safe
enough) for both kids and adults,
it's like nothing you've ever expe-
rienced (unless you're a hamster).
The Foam Machine Party is a
wet and wild way to flop around
in foam with your friends. The in-
flatable pit creates a giant sudsy
sensation.
It's good, clean fun for kids and
grown-ups of all ages (and the
foam is biodegradable, too!)
The state of the art mobile
game theaters are the star of
every party and guaranteed to
amaze. Imagine playing the
hottest video games like Guitar
Hero and Madden Football on
please see PICNIC, page 9
On May 16, Chief Louis Bordi presented
the Chief s Award to Voorhees Ed Simpson
in recognition of more than 50 years of
service to the Voorhees Township Police
Department. Ed served as a part-time offi-
cer in Voorhees from 1959 through 1963
when he became full-time.
During his half century of service, Ed
has been a patrolman, sergeant and detec-
tive sergeant. Ed excelled in many areas,
but soon became the departments fatal ac-
cident reconstruction officer.
Ed continues to serve our community
and the police department as a court secu-
rity guard and school crossing guard.
In addition to serving Voorhees, Ed
served his country as a Navy Signalman on
aircraft carriers during the Korean War. He
spent one year in Cho Sin evacuating
ground troops near the Manchurian Bor-
der. He also worked on the residential yacht
for Presidents Harry S Truman and Dwight
D. Eisenhower.
Ed earned a
Bachelors Degree
in law enforcement
from Glassboro
State College.
As if being a po-
lice officer was not
enough, Ed was
also past president
and assistant fire
chief in the
Voorhees Town-
ship Fire Depart-
ment and was a
founding member
and the first cap-
tain of the Voorhees Ambulance Corps. He
was also very involved in youth sports,
coaching Little League baseball and
wrestling.
Ed and his bride, Loretta, have been mar-
ried for 61 years. They have three children,
10 grandchildren and six great grandchil-
dren.
On behalf of the other members of the
Voorhees Township Committee and the
Voorhees community, congratulations and
thank you to Ed Simpson for more than
half a century of service to the Voorhees
Township Police Department.
On another note:
The farmers market at the Voorhees
Town Center is open from 8 a.m. until noon
every Saturday rain or shine through Oct.
5. Vendors include Duffields, Fruitwood,
Bellview Winery and more, supplying both
Jersey Fresh and locally grown produce,
meats, cheeses, wines and more.
The first show in our annual Summer
Twilight Series will be June 13 (rain date
June 14) and will feature the sounds of Dr.
Ks Motown Revue. The show starts at 7:30
p.m. at Connolly Park and is free.

MAYORS MESSAGE
T
he unofficial start of summer
has come and gone. With Me-
morial Day weekend in the
rearview mirror, the focus now is on
brighter days ahead the beach, the
sun, vacations and relaxation. Presi-
dent Obama and Gov. Christie got in
the spirit last week when they toured
the Jersey Shore to assess the recovery
from Hurricane Sandy.
Even the weather is playing along,
with temperatures in the 90s last week,
and heat advisories being issued
throughout the region.
New Jersey coastal towns are hoping
and praying that the storm or other
outside forces does not affect the
summer season. And all New Jersey
residents should hope for the same, as
the summer Shore business is a huge
part of the states economy a $19 bil-
lion industry, or half of the states total
tourism revenue, according to esti-
mates.
The state is planning to spend $25
million in federal recovery money on
an advertising campaign to attract vis-
itors to the Shore. A campaign,
Stronger Than the Storm, with the
Twitter hashtag #STTS, promotes the
states coast in part by providing guide-
lines and tools for people looking to
plan a New Jersey beach vacation.
A recent AAA survey says that the
Shore will be just fine, as almost 80 per-
cent of people from New Jersey and
the Philadelphia region say that Hurri-
cane Sandy has not affected their sum-
mer travel plans to the Shore.
The proof will be in the pudding,
though, once turnout can be assessed.
So, as we said in this space a few
weeks ago, make sure you travel local
this summer and visit the states won-
derful beaches. Theyre cheap, theyre
close, and theyre a lot of fun.
And while youre doing it, dont for-
get about us, either. Send us your vaca-
tion photos, and well let all your
neighbors know just how much fun
youre having.
In the meantime, enjoy the sun!
Sun-splashed summer success?
Heres to hoping all goes well at the Jersey Shore
Dont forget about us!
While youre vacationing this summer,
dont forget about The Sun. Send us
your family or friend vacation photos,
and well show everyone in town.

How to Keep Cool and Safe

During A Hot Summer
Its only June,
but temperatures
are on the rise and
heat alerts have
already been is-
sued for the up-
coming summer
season. As the liai-
son to Camden
Countys Depart-
ment of Health
and Human Serv-
ices, I want to share with you some
valuable tips from our health pro-
fessionals that can help you enjoy
the summer and cope with the
heat.
To avoid heat-related illness, do
the following:
Avoid, as much as possible,
working or playing in the hot sun
or other hot areas. If you must be
out in the sun, wear a head cover-
ing. A wide-brimmed hat or visor
will not only protect your head
from intense rays of the sun, it will
also provide a shield for your eyes.
Use air-conditioners and fans.
Open windows to release trapped
hot air.
If you take medication, consult
with your physician. Some med-
ications cause a bad reaction in
hot weather.
Wear lightweight clothing.
Drink plenty of non-alcoholic
liquids, warm and cool to prevent
dehydration from the heat.
Maintain a normal diet.
Shower or bathe in water that is
near skin temperature.
Do not leave older people, chil-
dren or pets alone in cars.
Check frequently on older or ill
family members and friends
Make sure there is adequate
ventilation and cooling in their
homes, that they drink plenty of
liquids and that theyre not experi-
encing medical difficulties.
The early warning signs of heat
related illness are decreased en-
ergy, slight loss of appetite, faint-
ness, light-headedness and nausea.
People experiencing
these symptoms
should go to a cool en-
vironment, drink liq-
uids, and remove
excess clothing and
rest.
Parents need to
keep their children
sun-safe this summer.
Research shows a link
between sunburns in
children and an increased risk of
melanoma and skin cancer later in
life. Parents can take steps now to
prevent that from happening:
Choose hats that shade your
childs face, neck and ears (wide-
brim hats are best) and clothing
made of fabrics you cant see
through when held up to the light.
Encourage t-shirts instead of tank
tops.
Apply sunscreen on exposed
skin. Choose a broad-spectrum
sunscreen that blocks both Ultravi-
olet A and B rays (UV-A and UV-B)
with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
of at least 15. Apply liberally 20
minutes before going outdoors and
reapply every two hours or after
swimming or sweating.
Require your kids to wear sun-
glasses. Choose those with 99 to
100-percent UV-A and UV-B protec-
tion in a wrap-around style that
protects tender skin around the
eyes.
UV rays reflect off water and
sand and also reach below the
waters surface. Continuous reap-
plication of sunscreen on exposed
skin is important even when chil-
dren are passively playing on the
beach or in the pool all day.

Lukes also built a robot
with the ability to walk
The question of why
LEGOs? is quickly answered
when speaking to Luke or his
parents.
Hes been in love with LEGOs
since he was little, his mother
Minny said.
Whenever we dont hear Luke
for a couple of hours, we know
where to find him.
The Magettes converted extra
closet space in their home to ac-
commodate all the LEGOs Luke
has accrued, as well as to give
him a workspace.
Hell do the specific kits you
can buy like Star Wars but most
of all he likes creating his own,
Minny said.
Its exciting to see him using
his creativity, using his imagina-
tion.
Even before the QR code, Luke
had built an impressive LEGO re-
sume.
He has made sushi, a bride and
groom for the top of a wedding
cake, and a robot with the ability
to walk, all out of LEGOs.
Luke just has that ability, that
vision, to see something and be
able to build it, Minny said.
Strain agreed with his moth-
ers sentiment.
Hes very mathematically gift-
ed. He has the ability to think
outside the box, Strain said.
Once Luke brought the project
into school after the Memorial
Day holiday, Strain reached out
to LEGO, LEGO Club Magazine
and Brick Journal about it.
Her hope is to have his QR
code be used by the company.
I encourage freethinking and
free expression in my class,
Strain said. And what Luke has
done is so cool.
Even if the QR code doesnt
catch their attention, it is a pretty
safe bet something Luke builds
will.

The Freeholder Board named
the new recreational field located
at Challenge Grove Park designed
to accommodate all athletes
Boundless Field.
The final name came from the
winning entry in an online con-
test opened to residents to help
name the field. At a meeting on
May 14, Camden Countys Parks
and Events Committee chose the
name as most fitting for this proj-
ect. The online contest ran for six
weeks.
Freeholder Deputy Director Ed
McDonnell has been working on
this project for years to enhance
the Camden County Park System.
The Boundless Field will pro-
vide children and adults with
physical and cognitive disabilities
the opportunity to play on the
same recreational surface as their
non-disabled friends, McDonnell
said.
The beautiful new field will
provide a variety of opportunities
for disabled children to play base-
ball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse,
badminton and many more activi-
ties at the facility.
One of every ten children can-
not play on a playground even
an American with Disabilities Act
(ADA) approved playground, be-
cause of physical limitations.
Thousands of children with dis-
abilities live in Camden County,
which includes a variety of non-
profit organizations and schools,
which serve disabled children and
adults. These identified popula-
tions would derive a significant
benefit from this new amenity at
Challenge Grove Park.
This facility will be a perfect
complement to Jakes Place, an ac-
cessible playground in the same
park, and add another important
piece to the fully accessible,
award-winning Challenge Grove
Park, McDonnell said. Chal-
lenge Grove will become a place
where anything is possible not
just baseball and softball. It will
unite families and provide chil-
dren and adults with enjoyment
every day.
The boundless athletic field is
being completed at Camden Coun-
tys Challenge Grove Park, the
award-winning fully accessible
park at the corner of Bortons
Mill and Caldwell roads in Cherry
Hill. The official opening ceremo-
ny of Boundless Field will be held
in June, where the resident who
submitted the name will be recog-
nized.

Clothes dryers are responsible for an estimated 15,000
home fires in the U.S. annually, causing over $84 million in
property damage. The leading cause of the fires was lint
build-up in the exhaust system.
COITs Dryer Vent Cleaning will help reduce the lint build-
up in a typical transition hose. Plus, our skilled technicians
can remove the dust, pollens and contaminants from yours
homes air duct system, resulting in clean

Theatre Company offering summer
program for area children
The Voorhees Theatre Compa-
ny, named Best Community The-
atre of 2011 by SJ Magazine, in
conjunction with the Voorhees
Community Education and
Recreation Department, will
again offer its successful and pop-
ular summer theatre program,
June 25 to Aug. 1. More than 170
children are expected to partici-
pate in this summers production
of Seussical Jr.
Now in its 10th year, the VTC
summer theatre program offers a
performance option for children
in grades three to eight and a
technical theatre option for
young people in grades seven to
10. Attracting young people from
many South Jersey communities,
including Voorhees, Cherry Hill,
Marlton, Gibbsboro and Berlin,
the program takes place at the
Voorhees Middle School.
Performance program partici-
pants split their days between re-
hearsing for the show and partici-
pating in a variety of inter-active
workshops taught by theatre pro-
fessionals. Workshops typically
include topics such as stage com-
bat, dance, and vocal training,
among many others. Technical
theatre campers work with pro-
fessionals to design and build sets
and learn the arts of theatrical
lighting and sound. The program
will culminate with performanc-
es of Seussical Jr. in August.
Our goal is to give kids a sam-
pling of a variety of theatre disci-
plines in a fun, safe environment
where they can experience the
teamwork involved in creating a
theatrical production, said camp
program director Karen Nichol-
son. They work hard, they have
fun, and they never fail to amaze
us with their performances at the
end of the program.
Registration materials are
available at www.voorheesthe-
atre.org/summerprogram and at
the Voorhees CER office at the
Voorhees Middle School, or by
emailing Karen@voorheesthe-
atre.org. The six-week program,
Mondays to Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., is $575 for Voorhees resi-
dents and $595 for non-residents.
Before- and after-care is available.
Director Sandi Makofsky, Cher-
ry Hill, will direct Seussical Jr.
The Voorhees Theatre Compa-
ny is the only community theatre
group in the area that makes the
commitment to educate their
young performers. Their sum-
mer theatre program teaches
children between the ages of 8
and 14 the basic skills necessary
to mount a theatre performance.
Few, if any, community theatres
show such a commitment to the-
atre education. It is because of
this and their efforts to maintain
a professional atmosphere that
VTC is South Jerseys best- kept
secret, she said.
VTC is a non-profit community
theatre providing opportunities
for young people to participate in
theatre as performers, techni-
cians, and audience members. In
addition to the summer camp pro-
gram, VTC will produce the popu-
lar musical Into the Woods for
high school and college age par-
ticipants this summer, and Fid-
dler on the Roof for participants
from third grade to whatever age
in November.

VTC and its programs, visit

Friends of Boy Scout
Troop 127 to hold fundraiser
Friends of Boy Scout Troop 127
will be holding a basket auction
fundraiser to raise money to pur-
chase desperately needed camp-
ing equipment.
A great deal of the equipment
currently being used is in need of
repair, while some is beyond re-
pair and needs to be replaced.
In addition, the troop has
grown over the last couple of
years and it no longer has enough
equipment for everyone.
The new equipment will make
it possible for the troop to contin-
ue camping.
Although the meetings are a
great place to teach the boys, cer-
tain skills can only be taught in an
outdoor setting.
This allows them to understand
the lessons that have been taught.
The event will be held June 15
at the Moose Lodge in Linden-
wold.
Troop 127 is expecting approxi-
mately 150 guests. Food and bever-
ages will be sold from the kitchen.
The troop is asking for any
items that can be graciously do-
nated including gift certificates,
free passes to businesses, auction
baskets, free coupons to merchan-
dise for door prizes, merchandise
to raffle, monetary donations and
snacks to sell in the kitchen.
Call Colleen Hovel at (856) 278-
1541 to arrange a pickup.
Businesses will be proudly ad-
vertised with the donation with
your business card, flyer or
brochure.

More than 100 people joined
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospi-
tal for Children CEO Dr. Kevin B.
Churchwell on May 22 to formally
dedicate the new Nemours
duPont Pediatrics practice on
Laurel Oak Road in Voorhees.
While Nemours has operated a

more than a decade, the opening
of this new location expands the
services available to South Jersey
families beyond those previously
offered to include outpatient ther-
apy services, medical imaging
and additional pediatric specialty
services like developmental pedi-
atrics, audiology, and
ear/nose/throat.
Attendees included patients,
families, staff and special guests
including New Jersey State As-
semblywoman Pamela Lampitt
and Voorhees Mayor Michael
Mignogna. Assemblywoman
Lampitt shared a joint resolution
from the House and Senate cele-
brating the opening of the new lo-
cation and thanking Nemours for
its work caring for the children of
South Jersey.
A highlight of the evening was
Katherine Jones sharing the
story of her two-and-a-half-year-
old daughter Abigail, who was
born with a ventricular septic de-
fect and underwent open heart
surgery at Nemours duPont Hos-
pital for Children in 2012.

Ryan was a member of Big East
All-Academic Football team
Rutgers thought he was good
enough to go there. Thats one of
the reasons New England drafted
him. They take the same type of
kids, Spittal said, adding there is
a history of Rutgers football play-
ers being drafted to the Patriots
because coach Bill Belichick and
former Rutgers head coach Greg
Schiano had a good connection.
In the 2013 draft, New England
selected three players from Rut-
gers: Ryan, Duron Harmon (safe-
ty) and Steve Beauharnais (line-
backer).
Ryan said his time spent as
quarterback for Eastern helped
him adjust to the fast pace and
pressure of college football. It
also gave him a different perspec-
tive when it came time to step
onto the field on defense as a cor-
nerback.
It took me a while to get ad-
justed to Rutgers, he said,
adding it was a great experience
playing with a group of guys he
grew up with on the football field.
I accomplished a lot of the
goals that I wanted to, and play-
ing at Rutgers made me not only
a better player, but a better man,
Ryan said.
During his time at Rutgers,
Ryan, a three-time member of the
Big East All-Academic Football
team, had 170 tackles, 6.5 sacks,
seven interceptions and four
forced fumbles, according to Rut-
gers website.
In 2011, he was named Big East
Defensive Player of the Week
after a winning game against the
University of Pittsburgh Pan-
thers, 34-10, where he made two
interceptions. Ryan said he is still
in the transition stage at the Pa-
triots camp. A few days after the
selection was announced, he was
sent to Foxboro, Mass., for train-
ing. Ryan said he did not have
much time for celebration, but he
got back to work doing what he
dreamed of when he was younger.
I felt extremely grateful. I put
a lot of hard work in to get to this
point, Ryan said. I made a lot of
people smile that day.
