THE LOST ART OF ART

We recommend the National Gallery of Art as your next destination. The Gallerys collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present. If you want to skip the boring art and go directly to the most interesting pieces, head straight to the east wing of the building. Here you can see the focus is on modern and contemporary art, with a collection including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Alexander Calder.
Do not touch the art. Dirt, moisture, and general nastiness found on hands can stain or corrode the surfaces of the artworks. The curators are sticklers about this rule.

MIND YOUR TABLE MANNERS

By now, youll be starved and looking for a place to rest your feet. Central Michel Richard, one of the areas most acclaimed new restaurants, is a short walk away at Tenth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest. Feast on bistro food gone haute: lobster burgers with crispy fries, fried chicken with mustard sauce, faux gras made from chicken livers whipped with butter. After all that walking, treat yourself to Richards signature Kit Kat bar dessert. Heaven on a plate.

EXPLORATION IS ENCOURAGED
With its dinosaur bones, insect zoo, Hope Diamond, and more, the Natural History Museum is the most visited museum in Washington DC. The main building has an overall area of 1.5 million square feet with
325,000 square feet of exhibition and public space.

Talk about a Napoleon complex. Prepare yourself, the building sounds extremely intimidating and is even more so once you walk through the doors. Just know that you could never see everything all in one day. From the museums map, pick out the top ten things you have to see and focus on accomplishing those.
If you get lost, dont worry. One of the 1,000+ employees at the museum will be sure to help you find your way.

WHITE HOUSE OR BUST

Its off to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for a look at the Presidents home sweet home. Since tours of the White House are hard to come bythey must be booked months in advanceyoull be taking in the sites from behind the fence. But dont worry, theres still plenty to see. The White House complex consists of the main building, which is the executive residence space, and the East and West Wings. The East Wing, visible from Pennsylvania. The West Wing is where the business of the White House happens. From the Pennsylvania Avenue side, it extends to the right of the executive residence and houses the Oval Office, the Cabinet Room, the White House Situation Room, and the Press Briefing Room. Sounds very spacious.

DINE IN STYLE
Finally, your day is coming to a close and its time to once again enjoy some great American food. A stones throw away from the White House is the Districts oldest and most historic saloon, the Old Ebbitt Grill. The restaurant is known for its extensive beer selection, fresh seafood, and authentic flavors as well as a one-of-a-kind oyster bar. If you are a fan of crab, the crab cakes should not be missed. Finish your day feeling 100% American by getting the Apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Word to the wise, you might as well order two slices from the get-go. Yumm-o.

ITS A BIRD! ITS A PLANE!

As a change of pace and to grab some fresh air, walk down the Mall heading in the direction of the towering white marble statue that appears to be projecting out of the ground. This is the Washington Monument. This monument was built to commemorate Americas first president (youll never guess who it was). It is both the worlds tallest stone structure and the worlds tallest obelisk. Construction of the monument began in 1848, but was halted from 1854 to 1877, and finally completed in 1884. You can see the difference in the color of the stones if you look about a third of the way up.

MILESTONES OF FLIGHT
The Museums grand entry hall showcases a truly awesome collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft that represent epic achievements in aviation and space flight. This includes Charles Lindberghs own plane, the Spirit of St. Louis.

APOLLO TO THE MOON

in 1961 to landing a man on the Moon, America had sent only a single astronaut briefly into space. By the time the Apollo program ended, it had taken the efforts of more than a halfmillion people, produced the largest and most powerful rockets ever built, and sent humans farther than they had ever gone before. The gallery also displays some of the Museums great treasures: space suits worn by Apollo astronauts on the Moon.

SEA-AIR OPERATIONS
You dont enter this gallery; you come aboard. The shrill whistle of a bosuns call sounds as you cross onto the quarterdeck of the mythical aircraft carrier USS Smithsonian. Inside is a scaled-down re-creation of a hangar deck bay. The surrounding structures and equipment are from an actual aircraft carrier.
