About NIT Trichy

The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man -power in technology for the country. The college was conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development in 1986. Later in the year 2003 Deemed University status was granted by MHRD and renamed as National Institute of Technology. The institution offers Under Graduate Courses in ten branches and Post Graduate Courses in twenty one disciplines of Engineering & Technology and Science besides Ph.D. and M.S. (by research) in all the departments. The college is an example of cultural unity with students drawn from most of the states in the country. NITT is witnessing an exponential growth in R&D activities. Apart from a large consultancy work undertaken by our engineering departments, academic research gains its momentum day by day.

The department has an excellent industrial interaction and contributes to the industry by offering consultancy services. Some of them are: Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and its ancillaries.

Overview
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is the current industry standard method for solving complex mechanical problems using computers. Simply, it works by breaking down a complex problem into a series of much smaller and more easily solvable connected problems. FEA is a powerful tool is used in practically all engineering applications today; but it must be treated with care and understanding because it is also very easy to get incorrect answers. FEA will not tell you if you have set up your analysis incorrectly. This means that, even if you understand the entire math and physics at work, simple mistakes in the initial conditions can yield good looking results that are completely wrong.

Course Objectives
A variety of specializations under the umbrella of the Mechanical Engineering discipline (such as aeronautical, biomechanical, and automotive industries) commonly use integrated FEM in design and development of their products. In the field of mechanical engineering, Finite Element Simulation has become a well appreciated research tool for the prediction of stresses, strains etc. It is an inevitable technique for simulating the research problems of various physics. Understanding the theoretical background of the Finite Element Method is still in imprecise stage for many of the researchers. There are many tools developed and made available in the research scenario which helps the researchers to solve their problems in a virtual domain. Several modern FEM packages include specific components such as thermal, electromagnetic, fluid, and structural working environments. The objective of this short term course is to make the participants to understand the basic concepts behind the Finite Element Method by arranging expert lectures and make them comfortable to solve different problems of various physics by providing hands-on-training on the familiar FEM tools like ANSYS WORKBENCH. The ultimate aim of this short term course is to train the beginners of researchers from academia and industrial sectors.
