he City of Yuma Parks and Recreation is dedicated to our mission of serving the community and promoting the spirit of fun! Our professional staff works diligently to provide the quality programs, activities, play spaces, and facilities that we are known for and that the public expects. On behalf of Yuma Parks and Recreation, Id like to thank the community for the opportunity to enrich lives and create a parks and recreation system that is valued. Im pleased to share with you a number of positive recognitions we have received over the past year due to your collaboration and support as well as some new initiatives: The Parks, Arts, and Recreation Commissions agenda to promote the importance and provide opportunities to play in Yuma receives ongoing recognition. Yuma is one of only 19 communities nationwide that was recognized as a Playful City USA for the sixth consecutive year. The City maintains over 8,000 trees in its system and has certified arborists on staff to enhance our urban forest program. On the national level, Yuma was named a Tree City, USA for the sixth year in a row due to the on-going efforts of our successful, all volunteer, Yuma Community Tree Board. Get involved in Arbor Day, featured inside this guide during April. We continue to provide some of the best tournament services and athletic fields in the desert southwest attracting visitors to Yuma from as far away as Chicago! We received the James Farrell Amateur Softball Associations Award of Excellence for conducting one of the highest rated National Tournaments in the country. We received over $150,000 in grants and sponsorships this past year. We provide the classes and services listed in this guide due in part to this support. We have served over 60,000 customers via phone calls alone, but program registration and ticket purchases may also be done on-line! We added a new Golf Course Clubhouse at Desert Hills Par-3 Course. Soon customers will be able to purchase golf items, enjoy a cold beverage and snacks while golfing, and return to a shady patio after their round all at the Par 3. Check out the Beat the Heat program to thank our year round golfers at the Desert Hills Golf Course! We listened to your programming feedback and we are enhancing our outdoor recreation offerings with increased archery programming, a family overnight camp out, and kayak rentals. We even have an outdoor swim for the pooches in September! Check out all of the new opportunities indicated with a star in this guide.

Registration Information
OUR MISSION: Enriching lives through quality programs, experiences, and facilities that preserve the past, provide for the present, plan for the future, and promote the spirit of fun. This spring and summer, Yuma Parks and Recreation is offering a variety of opportunities for all ages through recreational programming, classes, and activities, while striving to provide excellent customer satisfaction at every level. PROGRAM REGISTRATION Program priority registration will be held beginning Monday, March 25, 2013 for City of Yuma residents and Monday, April 1, 2013 for all other residents and will continue throughout the summer. On-line registration will begin on Monday, April 1, 2013 for programs not requiring a birth certificate/registration form. Some programs are limited to the number of participants and will close when a program fills. If a class or program you are interested in is full, please ask to be put on a Wait List. Wait Lists will be used should vacancies occur or class expansion is feasible. Our spring programs begin April 15, 2013 and summer programs begin June 3, 2013. Various program fees are discounted for qualifying City of Yuma residents. For the purpose of registration, a Yuma resident is defined as any person living within the corporate limits of the City of Yuma. CHILDRENS AGE REQUIREMENTS Age requirements have been established to safely facilitate age appropriate classes. Children must be the appropriate age by the first day of class in order to register please, no exceptions. FIVE EASY WAYS TO REGISTER Registration forms are available in the Parks and Recreation Office. Pick one up, or let us fax or email one to you today. Online registration at www.yumaaz.gov/parksandrec. (Some programs are not available online.) Walk-In registration held 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday thru Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm every other Friday at Yuma City Hall, One City Plaza. (City Hall is closed on alternate Fridays.) Registration may also be taken at the Yuma Readiness and Community Center - 6550 E. 24th Street as well as the North End Community Center - 160 E. 1st Street. Fax-In registration 24 hours a day using MasterCard, Discover, Visa, or American Express at (928) 373-5244. Mail-In registration to Yuma Parks and Recreation, One City Plaza, Yuma, Arizona, 85364. Walk in registration will have priority and you may be placed on hold or asked to have your call returned based on the volume of customers waiting in line at the time. CONSIDER YOUR SCHEDULE CAREFULLY BEFORE REGISTERING We hope that we have provided something for everyone. We encourage registrants to consider their schedule carefully prior to registering for any program or class offered. A refund, less $5 of the fee, may be requested prior to the start of the program. After the program starts, refunds will not be considered. Refunds will not be given for swim lesson programs. Refunds must be picked up within 10 days of request or issuance. The City of Yuma Parks and Recreation staff reserves the right to photograph facilities, activities, and program participants for potential future use in advertising brochures, all media venues and the Citys web page. All photos will remain the property of the City of Yuma. Yuma Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel classes/programs due to insufficient registration or other causes beyond our control. Family Events For the Fun of It!

Taco Festival Whose taco cuisine will reign supreme? See who will be crowned Yumas next Taco King and Salsa Queen at one of Arizonas Best Festivals as named by Arizona Highways Magazine. Cervezas and margaritas for the adults and activities for the kids. For entertainment there will be piatas, face painting, and more. Plus tacos for all! Date: Saturday, April 13 Time: 11:00 am 8:00 pm Location: Desert Sun Stadium Fee: FREE event entry into the stadium, food and beverage fees will be set by vendors. Youth Sports Expo Its not your traditional track and field day. Enjoy a day of fun in the sun. Boys and girls will compete at each sporting event while experiencing new sports exhibitions and novelty games. Good sportsmanship and support from family, friends and staff will encourage each youth to do their very best in each of the events. All fairies receive a beautiful halo and wand. Have fun with fairy themed craft projects, face painting, music, train rides, and balloon twisting. Meet the Fairy Godmother and take part in Fairy Theater. Many surprises are waiting just for you! Be sure to wear your best fairy clothes. Hui O Hawaii will be providing food! Fairies eat free. Food will be available for parents / guardians to purchase. ARTbeat 6 If its mid-April its time for ARTbeat! Something different for the sixth year is that the event is in the evening and promises to bring you the best local artists featuring creative, distinctive artwork in downtown Yumas Historic North End. Various mediums are represented including painting, ceramics, photography, and many more. All art is for sale! Listen and groove to great music and check out the competition for best in show and other artist awards! Dont miss the coolest art event to hit Main Street. Card Board Boat Float Cardboard Boat Float is back!! Challenge yourself and friends by building your very own floating vessel out of cardboard. With grant support from TARGET, the Break-A-Leg Theater Camp is being taught by Ms. Karen Murphy. Karen is an enormously talented and accomplished actor, director, stage manager, and costumer with the Prescott Center for the Arts. She holds a masters degree in Theatre Arts and Humanities from Prescott College and has facilitated a variety of theatre arts classes for youth and adults. Tiny Tots
Tot programs provide 3 - 5 year olds a variety of recreational opportunities, in a safe and fun environment, that promotes learning, confidence and social interaction. When children are involved in a recreation program, they have the opportunity to develop positive feelings and establish friendships. During each class, instructors will utilize song, art and craft projects, games and various activities to promote learning about the theme of each session. Please note: In order to help your child gain independence, we ask that parents not stay in the classroom while the class is in session. Children must be fully potty trained before they are registered for a tot class, pull-ups are not permitted. Tiny Tots Tots are introduced to colors, numbers, shapes, letters, sign language, beginning Spanish, and safety concepts. During class time we will utilize songs, art projects, craft projects, games, and various activities to promote learning. PARENTS: Youth programs are offered throughout the summer at the Clymer Recreation Center or the North End Community Center. Please pay close attention to the days and locations when you are planning your childs summer schedule. All programs are designed to allow your child to socialize in a safe environment that promotes learning, skill development and independence. These classes are intended for children who are a minimum of 6 years old and have completed Kindergarten unless otherwise noted. Please note: In order to help your child gain independence, we ask that parents not stay in the classroom while the class is in session. A separate room is available for parents to wait for their child if they do not wish to leave the site. All children must be signed in/out by a parent or guardian for each program. If your child is staying with us for the whole afternoon, please send them with a small healthy snack to have during the break time. Water bottles are always encouraged; no soda please. A member of United States Swimming, Inc., (USA Swimming) the Heat will compete throughout Arizona, Southern California, and beyond! Individuals aged six and older are welcome to
participate. Adults are invited to join the growing Masters (18 and up) group. The summer season begins April 4, but new swimmers are welcome at any time. Sandshark Summer Swim Team This eight week program is a GREAT way to get involved in competitive swimming! The Sandsharks (a division of the Yuma Heat) are members of the Imperial Valley Swim League (IVSL), a summer recreational swimming organization that includes teams from Yuma and Californias Imperial Valley. Weekday dual meets and weekend invitationals provide plenty of competition for those new to the sport. The $99 cost includes IVSL registration, team fees, and a Sandshark t-shirt. Water Safety Instructor Course Prerequisite: Able to swim 500 yards using the breaststroke, sidestroke, and front and back crawl. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to teach the fundamentals swimming and lifesaving. Total 40 hours. Dates: June 3 June 14 Days: Monday Friday Time: 8:00 am Noon Location: Valley Aquatic Center Ages: 16 years and up Fee: $150; $115 with City resident credit Life Guard Training Today Prerequisite: Able to swim 500 yards using the breaststroke, sidestroke, and freestyle or crawl stroke. This class provides skills and knowledge needed to become well-trained, effective lifeguards for pools and no-surf beaches. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive the American Red Cross Life Guard certification. Discover Scuba *Pre-registration is required Participants must be experienced swimmers. Permission forms and a physical release from a physician are needed prior to the class. Forms are available at the Parks and Recreation main office. Class space is limited. Youth will experience the thrill of scuba diving for fish in a confined water (pool) environment, under the supervision of certified SCUBA Instructors. This just might be your start as a great scuba diver and oceanographer like Jacques Cousteau! Class is limited to 10. Date: Saturday, June 15 Time: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Location: Kennedy Pool Ages: 12 and up Fee: $20; $10 with City resident credit Open Water Scuba Diving Class The class involves academic study, skills learning in the safety of a confined water (pool) environment, and check-out dives in a real open-water (ocean or lake) setting. All classroom activity will be held at the Riverside Cottage Outdoor Education Center, and pool sessions will be held at Kennedy pool. You will need to provide your personal gear which includes mask, snorkel, fins, and booties all other equipment and study material will be provided. We will discuss this more on your dive orientation meeting. If attending one of the scheduled classes doesnt fit your schedule, please give us a call we may be able to work something out for you. Instructors are flexible and can make arrangements to meet your schedule. Scuba Classes
NEW!! We know your time is valuable and may not fit with the normal classroom schedule. Yuma Parks and Recreation is now offering online SCUBA classes. Do the knowledge development portion from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. After completing the on-line portion, schedule your confined water (pool training) and open water dives (real diving, where the fish are) with our Dive Instructor. You can choose to do your water dives one-on-one or in a semiprivate class with other students. If the on-line class sounds like it fits your needs, call the Parks and Recreation Department and speak to our Dive Instructor for more information.
Advanced Open Water Scuba Dive Class Pre-requisites: You must have successfully completed an Open Water Diver certification. Students receive an Advanced Open Water Dive Textbook. All five dives are instructor accompanied, as you complete the skills that will make you a safer and more competent diver. Advanced students will need to provide all their equipment. Equipment rental information is available upon request. Students are also responsible for all trip costs (travel out of town), air or enriched air fills, boat or dive charter fees. All classroom activity will be held at the Riverside Cottage Outdoor Education Center and dive location and dates will be discussed during your dive orientation meeting. Please note: SWIM LESSON REGISTRATION IS NOT AVAILABLE ON-LINE Infant Toddler: 6 months - 36 months. Parents or adult age 14 and older accompanies the child in the water. Preschool: 3 - 5 years. Parents or adult supervision required for children age 3. Emphasis will be on learning basic skills, holding breath, and floating. Infant Toddler and Preschool classes intend to develop in young children a high comfort level in and around the water and a readiness to swim. These courses do not teach children to be accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water. Please note: Beginner Diving: Prerequisite: age 8 and over, swim 25 yards, and feel comfortable in deep water.
Please note: Classes meet Monday through Friday for 45 minutes except for Infant Toddler which is only 30 minutes. $38; $25 with City resident credit. Swim Lesson Registration Procedures! Swim lesson participants may sign up for only one session at a time, but may register for any session during the summer. Participants must successfully complete all requirements for one level before entering the next level. Participants who are currently enrolled and wish to register for another session of swim instruction, may do so on the Wednesday before the last day of the session that you are enrolled in at the time. Registration, transfers and waiting list transactions may be done in person at the Parks and Recreation Office or by telephone. (Visa, Discover, American Express and MasterCard accepted) No one will automatically be placed on a waiting list. Parents must request to be put on a waiting list through the Parks and Recreation Office. Wait list participants will be notified if vacancies become available on a first come, first serve basis. Refunds will not be made for participants. However, funds may be transferred or placed on account for another swim lesson session or other Parks and Recreation activity. Availability of upcoming classes is not guaranteed as registration is ongoing throughout the summer. Classes without a minimum of six may be combined with other classes or canceled.
Level I: Water Exploration - Become oriented to aquatic environment. Level II: Primary Skills - Prerequisite: Level I certificate or demonstrated competency in Level I skills. Level III: Stroke Readiness - Prerequisite: Level II certificate or demonstrated competency in Level II skills. Level IV: Stroke Development - Prerequisite: Level III certificate or demonstrated competency in Level III skills. Level V: Stroke Refinement - Prerequisite: Level IV certificate or demonstrated competency in Level IV skills. Level VI: Skill Proficiency - Prerequisite: Level V certificate or demonstrated competency in Level V skills. Adult Swim Lessons: Co-Ed instruction. Class participation may range from water adjustment (afraid of water) to advanced skills for those interested in improving their swimming skills. Instruction is geared to the individual goals of the participant.
