funny thing happened to the Weinbergers over the holiday weekend. While going through my emails I discovered in the Claremont City Letter the city has named the yet-to-be-built affordable housing project Courier Place. The location of the project is 111 S. College Ave., where the COURIER did business for 25 years.
Even 4 years after moving to our current location on Claremont Boulevard, my family still has mixed feelings about how all this came about. We are honored the city would name the project after our newspaper. When I was approached about using the COURIER name in some way, I immediately asked my parents what they wanted. Martin thought it would be a good idea, while Janis was her normal enthusiastic self thinking it was amazing (she uses that word a lot.) So we gave our blessing and moved on with our daily business. Some people might find it odd that an affordable housing project is named after a newspaper, but it really fits our lifelong philosophy of helping people who may not be as fortunate as the majority of Claremont residents. My parents were activists and felt that every person had a right to the American dream. As a youngster I remember marching to Sacramento in support of Cesar Chavez and the farm workers. My mother was a regular volunteer for seniors helping raise money for the Joslyn Senior Center among other things. We would go to political conventions and do huge

photo spreads in the newspaper. In 1968, I remember my mother rushing me inside as I watched protestors clash with police in Chicago. Thats why we think its great this housing project is being built at our old location. I just wish it could have come about a little easier. It was originally our plan to stay at 111 S. College Ave. We liked the idea of being near the Village. Before our lease was up, we planned to either renegotiate or look at purchasing the property. Unfortunately, the person we made this handshake agreement with died before we could finalize anything. Then one day out of the blue a representative from the owners family said they had sold the property and we had one year to get out. They were going to build condos and business offices, we were told. My father Martin was seriously upset. We really never had a chance to be part of the process. It was hard not to feel like someone was making a profit at our expense. And what was the city of Claremont thinking? I never really understood the full scope of what was happening until after I took over as publisher several years later. At the time, my fathers health was failing and, like many newspapers, the COURIER had some hard decisions to make. Now we had to move. I really dont know what discussions Martin had with the city at the time, but I do know he felt we were left to figure things out on our own. So I took some time off from my job in North Carolina and we began looking around town. The COURIER has some odd needs regarding space, given that we have production equipment. We basically needed office space, with a big garage. At the time that was very hard to find. Since there really wasnt anything in the Village, we ended up at our current address on Claremont Boulevard. Its more out of the way, but we were able to make enough changes to the space to suit our needs. We moved out in 6 months figuring the quicker we left, the better. That was in May of 2006. In the end, it all worked out. Our current space is much more suited to our needs since we dont use nearly as much space. Martin looks like a genius because the COURIER did not take on huge amounts of debt for property and printing presses. It is one of the key reasons the business remains healthy. The original condos were never built and now the property is going to a cause we believe in. Our approach may have been a lot different if it had been planned that way in the first place. So we are doing just fine, thank you. No need to congratulate us. And had we been asked to use the COURIER name for a condo development like the original plan? Forget about it.

Claremont COURIER/Wednesday, September 8, 2010

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Claremont resident James Manifold announced that he will retire as Treasurer of Scripps College in June, 2011. Mr. Manifold has seen the college through many changes and has worked with 5 presidents during his career.

A lasting legacy that will be felt for decades

cripps College Vice President of Business Affairs and Treasurer James Manifold has gone far beyond what his position title indicated for almost 3 decades.
Mr. Manifolds latest action was announcing his retirement last month effective June 30, 2011. Scripps will begin the search for his replacement this fall. I am a Claremonter and have been for 30 years, Mr. Manifold said. But I would like to spend more time at Club Manifold. [Plus] Im involved in the city with the Architectural Commission, a part of the investment committee of the Library Foundation of Los Angeles and Im doing work with the American Arbitration Association. While Mr. Manifold came to Scripps in 1982, he had already served in other capacities at The Claremont Colleges prior to his position at the womens college. He taught accounting courses at Claremont McKenna College (then Claremont Mens College) starting in 1977 and simultaneously served as the interim director of the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles. Mr. Manifold replaced former Scripps College President Fritz Weis when he became the colleges chief financial officer 28 years ago. The 2 men have nearly 60 years of combined experience with The Colleges. My predecessor was Fritz Weis and he went across the street to be the treasurer at Claremont McKenna

College when I started working here [at Scripps], Mr. Manifold recalled. Ive known Fritz for a long time and hes probably worked in more roles within The Claremont Colleges than anyone else. Yet Mr. Manifold has built a stellar reputation of his own at Scripps. Starting in 1983, he set a precedent for financial transparency by publishing cash flow statements of the college 13 years before it became a requirement nationally. The east coast native also began publishing a statement of changes in endowed equity in 1996 when it was not required. Though his tenure has seen several economic downturns, Scripps has gone from an $20 million endowment when he started in 1982 to $200 million presently. James Manifold has played an essential role in the progress of Scripps College during a period of impressive growth and academic success, said Scripps College President Lori Bettison-Varga in a released statement. His many accomplishments as administrator, educator and advocate for Scripps and the larger Consortium will have a lasting positive impact for decades to come. Mr. Manifolds involvement in the colleges architecture has been just as impressive as the financial side. He has been a part of Scripps 100,000 square-foot expansion, administered more than $20 million in deferred maintenance projects and directed the overhaul of several historic buildings on campus. Today, Scripps College is recognized by several national publications

for its visual appeal. Even though the buildings were tired, they had good bones, Mr. Manifold explained. We worked on every building on campus except for Dennison [Library]. Thats the last one that we have in the works. Because Malott Commons changed the culture of the campus, he feels this project was significant. The Malott Commons has been the most transformative project Ive done, he said. We were trying to take an art building and make it into a campus center. It was transformative in that it gave students a focus and a really elevated sense of community because there used to be separate dining halls within the dorms. There is a lot of traffic that goes through there, providing a chance meeting between a student and professor, or just a central place to eat. Mr. Manifold has made contributions to the Consortium of the Claremont Colleges, working in the areas of physical plant structure, worker benefits, risk management and campus dining services. Additionally, he was an assistant professor during his tenure and taught courses at both Scripps and Claremont Graduate University, as well as publishing finance-related articles. Even with a long list of accomplishments, one thing stands out the most for Mr. Manifold. My biggest achievement was having worked for 5 different presidents, he said. They were each challenging in their own way.

Back to...whats new

by John Pixley

ugust 31st always felt like a long time away. I go by Oakmont School at least once a dayor almost every dayand, each time, I read this on the schools marquee. It was a notice that stopped time. It wasnt a countdown to an impending deadline. When it appeared in June, August 31st was a world away, and it was still far off about 2 weeks ago.
Even though it was August 31st. Even though the public schools in Claremont have never started in August. Even though, when I was growing up here, school always began after Labor Day, and I thought it was crazy when schools in other towns started before Labor Day and even sometime in August. I am still freaked that the public elementary school in Montclair not far from my house, on the way to the Montclair Plaza, started on August 9. Crazy! Apparently, there have been some people less than amused by all this. There has been some grumbling over the August 31 start date, with one letter-writer in these pages talking about others not liking it and about voting with their feet. What was thisa tea party protest? I imagined bunches of kids being kept home for the first week of school, with perhaps some picketing and maybe some talk of home-scooling. (I do wonder if the August 31st start put a crimp in some families holiday-weekend plans and if there were some absences on Thursday and Friday. Some Labor Day events, like the Strawberry Music Festival near Yosemite, start early. I feel funny taking off for 6 daysand I dont have children.)

observer
Also apparently, the August 31st start date was something of a compromise. In a poll, the teachers wanted school to start last weekcrazier and crazier! teachers wanting to go back to work earlier!and the parents wanted school to start after Labor Day. The official explanation had something to do with the district being in alignment with testing. Whatever. It all doesnt matter anymore anyway. August 31st has come and gonethe world on that marquee I kept passing has gone byand now, on September 8, school is underway in Claremont, kids present or not. The colleges also went into session. (At Pomona, the orientation tents were up on Marsden Quad 3 Sundays ago, although it appeared that handpainted signs labeled fewer of the buildings this year.) Yes, suddenly, the world on that marquee has passed me and all of us by, and, even as the hot weather has just recently come, summer hours are going out and summer concerts are wrapped up. And back-to-school sales in July suddenly make sense sort of. I used to think that back-to-school sales and ads were a cruel joke, especially when they started earlier and earlier. Why did everybody insist on reminding kids that summer would end and it would be time to return to school eventually, if not soon? Then I learned that the back-to-school sales period is the second most

critical time for merchants. Christmas ranks first. Just as its not about Jesus, its not about students. Its all about money. I should have known. There were also many years when I couldnt wait for summer to be over, and it wasnt about not liking hot weather. It was because summer meant Claremont without The Colleges, and Claremont without The Colleges was...death. It was nothing, a giant void, terribly boring, without The Colleges and their panoply of presentations. Then, something happened. Yes, things have picked up a bit in Claremont during the summer. There is more music and the street fair, as well as the farmers markets. But Ive also changed. Unlike several years ago, Im not having to have somewhere to go every evening. In fact, I find that I enjoy staying home in the evening. But not every evening. Dont get me wrong. I am looking forward to the lectures, performances and shows coming up, now that The Colleges are back in session. They are a big part of what makes Claremont, Claremont. I am also, however, feeling like Im bracing for an onslaught. I think Ill be more careful and be more selective. Even so, its terrific that there will be many times, including many evenings, when there will more than one thing going on. Again, this is one of the riches Claremont has to offer. So much the better for those who can enjoy most, if not all, of it. In such a place, where learning and discovery and seeing all that the world has to offer is so important and plays such a big role, early Septemberor even late Augustis like our New Years to celebrate. Even for those who arent quite ready for the school bells to ring.

Just think of the millions of bored people there would be in the world if it wasnt for digital, electricity and batteries.

Muslims in the media

Dear Editor: Thank you for the Friendship article in the COURIER on Saturday, August 28. There have been so many negative articles on Muslims in the media. It seems that for many the word Muslim suggests terrorism. Of the millions of Muslims around the world only a very, very small number are terrorists. Most of them were made by us invading Afghanistan. To have this community event, the Peace and Friendship Walk on September 12, is a big step in expressing friendship among all peoples.

Pat Tillman
Dear Editor: I recently saw the documentary Tillman. As I was leaving the theater, I heard someone say I cant believe our government would do that! My question is, why WOULDNT we think that? We were lied to about the reasons for invading Iraq, we were lied to about torture, we were lied to about Mission Accomplished and the war being over, we were lied to regularly for 8 years. The evidence is clear; to quote Bob Dylan, How many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesnt see? What we as a country did to the Tillman family is a disgrace; what our regime did in obviously attempting to turn a tragedy into a recruiting tool for an illegal and immoral war is unspeakable. Until those responsible are held accountable, we are still living the big lie. We need to stand up as a country and demand honesty and accountability from our leaders. Until that time, we will continue to be burdened with ille-

gal activities which negatively impact all of us; unless we speak our minds, we are complicit in the atrocities.

Kesslers 4 TDs powers Pack past Cougars

laremont High School quarterback Daniel Kessler made certain that the Wolfpack would start the 2010 with nothing less than a victory.
The senior threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for one score as CHS overwhelmed Cajon with an effective passing attack en route to a 31-14 victory at CHS last Friday. Kessler got Claremonts aerial game

going early with a 79-yard touchdown pass to receiver Aaron Dockery and a 9-yard TD strike to Jackson Reeder on the Packs first 2 drives to put Claremont ahead 14-0. The Cougars came back to tie the score at 14-14 in the 3rd quarter before Claremont (1-0) went on a 17-0 run the rest of the way to put Cajon away for good. During the stretch, Tanner Kuramata scored on a 4-yard reception, Brennan Carter added a 19-yard field goal and Kessler crossed the goal line for a 7-yard TD run. The senior quarterback finished the game 18-for-31 for 373 yards. Kuramata

and Dockery each broke the 100-yard receiving barrier with performances of 159 yards and 145 yards respectively. Claremonts running game managed just 45 yards off 10 carries with Kuramatas 14-yard run being the longest running play from scrimmage. CHS was without key transfer Taj Teague, who is nursing a partly torn hamstring. The Pack were equally as strong on defense with Jake Okerman (10 total tackles), Salim Cleghorne (9 total tackles), Andrei Tarankow (9 total tackles) and Darius Andres (8 total tackles) combining for half of

the teams tackles. Okerman also recorded 2 sacks in Fridays contest. Carter added 7 total tackles and an interception to go along with his 4 successful extra points and field goal. James Wernli and Andrei Tarankow each recovered a fumble. CHS will be tested this Friday when the Pack travels to La Verne to play Bonita at 7 p.m. The Bearcats opened the season last Friday with a 41-20 win over San Dimas to claim the Smudge Pot. William Bohannan
longtime El Roble music teacher
Known for his devotion to both music and his students, William Bill Bohannan, retired El Roble Intermediate School music instructor, died August 23, 2010 at the age of 85. Mr. Bohannan had been in poor health for the past four years following a number of strokes. The son of Robbie and Ivy Bohannan was born in Duncan, Oklahoma on June 29, 1925. His father was a minister, and Mr. Bohannan spent his younger years in Oklahoma and Texas. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Bohannan served with the U.S. Army in Germany and in the Philippines. A graduate of Bethany College in Bethany, Oklahoma in 1950, Mr. Bohannan began his career in Hydro, Oklahoma, where he taught for three years. He was then with the Birdville Independent School District in the Fort Worth, Texas area for about 10 years. During those years he also completed his masters degree in music at Texas Christian University. Mr. Bohannan and his family came to California in the early 1960s. He was in the music department at Claremont High School before starting at El Roble Intermediate School, his teaching home for many years. Mr. Bohannan was also music director at the Ontario Church of the Nazarene and was active over the years with the Claremont Symphony and Youth Symphony Orchestras. During his retirement years, his family reports that he enjoyed crafts and was known as a jack of all fix-its. He liked to travel, with Yosemite National Park as a particularly favorite destination. Former students, parents of students and colleagues remember Mr. Bohannan with warmth and respect. The Rev. C. Douglas Kroll, a parent in 1989, wrote, in part, after a spring concert: ...This balanced sound is not easy for even high school musicians and for intermediate school students to achieve such a blending reflects not only favorably upon them but also upon your ability as an instructor and conductor. Beth Garvin of Claremont was a student of Mr. Bohannans in 7th and 8th grades. It was a great band, both stage and marching, Ms. Garvin recalls. He was very passionate about teaching music and very serious about music and wanted you to learnall kinds of music. Kevin Grier was a student of Mr. Bohannan when he was in 8th gradeand is now principal at El Roble. He really wanted to push students to do, to try the hardest piece of music they could, Mr. Grier remembers. at El Roble during Mr. Bohannans years there, has similar memories. He was always very dedicated, Mr. Patterson says of Mr. Bohannan, both to music and to his students. I never met anyone more committed to a music program as Bill Bohannan. James Fahringer, longtime conductor of the Claremont Symphony Orchestra remembers Mr. Bohannan for the way he worked closely with and was a colleague of Gary Iida at Claremont High School, as well as the symphony orchestras. He was a regular colleague, particularly with the youth symphony. He was a delightful man and a thorough absolute musician, Mr. Fahringer notes. Mr. Bohannan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lavonia Bohannan of Rancho Cucamonga; by his daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Ron Sutton of Alta Loma, Cheryl and Jim Scharn of Alta Loma, and Kathryn and Nick Harris of Crestline; and by his grandchildren, Angie and JoEllen Sutton, Krista and Nathan Scharn, Abigail Rutherford and Duncan Harris. Memorial services for Mr. Bohannan were held on August 29, 2010 at the Ontario Church of the Nazarene and at Riverside National Cemetery.
Pat Yarborough

Former colleagues Howard Bunte and Gene Smith remember other sides of Mr. Bohannan. Mr. Bunte notes that Mr. Bohannan possessed a quiet personality, and Mr. Smith, on the humorous side, recalls that because of his long hours of music practices, Mr. Bohannan became known for quick afterschool power naps in a comfortable chair in the El Roble teachers lounge. Both agree that Mr. Bohannan was a very good music teacher. Ralph Patterson, who was principal

Ted Harrison
Ted Harrison, a 42-year Claremont resident, died of heart failure while returning home from an LA Dodgers game on August 30, 2010. An enthusiastic Dodgers fan, this was a fitting end to Mr. Harrisons 80 years. A 50-year resident of California, Mr. Harrison was born on November 18, 1929 in Dallas County, Alabama. After high school graduation, his parents, both educators, didnt ask him if he were going to college, but where. He chose Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee, and upon his 1954 graduation, Mr. Harrison was drafted into the Army. After an honorable discharge from Fort Ord, he returned to his native Alabama, but soon followed his yearning

educator, administrator, traveler, Dodgers fan

to come back to the Golden State, doing so with his wife, Jean, and son, Rod. In 1960, Mr. Harrison began working as a math teacher in the Chino Unified School District (CUSD). In 1969, he completed a masters degree in education at the University of Southern California. With CUSD, he rose to the position of director of pupil personnel, retiring in 1993. In retirement, this Dodgers fan developed a great passion for racquetball, enjoying the sports camaraderie and becoming a fixture at The Claremont Club 4 to 5 times a week. An eager and frequent traveler, Mr. Harrison traveled the world several times, seeing and experiencing places that most men only dream of, said his longtime friend, Joe Silva. He was a man who loved life. He was a man who loved his family, never failing to be there for them, never failing to make life interesting, commented his son, Rod Harrison. Mr. Harrison is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean Harrison of Claremont; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Rod and Dorothy Harrison of Claremont; his 2 granddaughters, Kimberly Harrison of Claremont and Kelly Harrison of New York; his 3 sisters, Zealer Harrison-Landers, Elizabeth HarrisonHicks and Jacqueline Harrison-Foote; and his 3 brothers, Lorenzo, Eugene and Jerry Harrison. Planning the future of Thompson Creek Spreading Grounds

The League of Women Voters of the Claremont Area has been awarded a $200,000 grant by the Los Angeles and Lower San Gabriel Rivers and Mountains Conservancy to prepare a Feasibility Study for the Thompson Creek Spreading Grounds project, located at the northwest corner of Pomello Drive and Mills Avenue. A public workshop will be conducted on Saturday, September 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the Padua Room, Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Rd. The purpose of the workshop is to present alternative concepts for the proposed Thompson Creek Spreading Grounds Project that achieves the goals established by the LWV at project inception. Important features of the project being reviewed by the League and its consultant RBF Consulting include: increasing capture and storage of storm water, preservation or restoration of natural habitats, enhancement and creation of additional trails and educational amenities. The projects proximity to the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park to the north, and undeveloped hillsides to the west provide an opportunity to continue the preservation of this land that was originally started by the Pomona Valley Protective Association over 100 years ago. Saving this land as part of the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park would assure its continued preservation for water spreading while enhancing its beneficial public uses for residents. Freeman Allen and Marilee Scaff, co-chairs of the LWV Water Task Force, who are responsible for the grant, will conduct this public meeting along with an RBF consultant. The meeting will include an overview of the biological resources, geology and hydrology of the site and additional information gathered since the initial public meeting held in April. Coffee and refreshments will be served from about 10:15 am. The presentation will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. The meeting is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to the LWV Office at 624-9457.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL EVENT PERMIT NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pursuant to the Claremont Municipal Code, that Maureen Aldridge, Executive Director of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, has petitioned for approval of a Special Event Permit (#10-SEP09) for the annual Village Venture Street Faire. The street faire will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010, and involves the closure of streets within the Claremont Village area as indicated on the associated map. The affected streets will be closed between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the day of the event. NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that the Community Development Director has determined that this proposal is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) in accordance with Section 3.03(b)(4) of Clare-

monts Local Guidelines for Implementing CEQA because the Special Event is of short duration (approximately 13 hours) and will not create long term physical impacts to the City of Claremont; therefore, no further environmental review is necessary. The public review period for this application will begin on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, and will conclude on Monday, September 20, 2010. All interested persons are directed to contact Associate Planner, Luke Seibert, Community Development Department Planning Division, 207 Harvard Avenue, or by calling (909) 399-5483 for further information. faculty position in the department. The chair holder will be supported by a significant fund to aid in research and teaching activities. According to a press release, the majority of the funding for the endowment came from Sally Hurt, a CGU alumna and former student of Mr. Reiss. She created a $1 million challenge grant to encourage other donors and alumni to support the effort. Significant gifts also came from Karl and Beverly Benjamin, Peggy Phelps and Robert B. Egelston, a long-time supporter of the arts and former trustee of CGU. A professor will be appointed to the endowed chair post in the coming months.
