Worship Planning

May - 2009

May 3 – Communion – Good Shepherd Sunday

Scripture: John 10:11-18, Psalm 23
Sermon: “The Good Shepherd”
Theme: Jesus the good shepherd, the One who lays down his life so that the sheep might
live, the One who protects the flock from attack and scattering. He is the One who meets
us at this table, and guides the direction and future of this congregation. He is the One
who will lead all of us safely home.
Video: Randy – shepherd imagery, read the psalm, and work with its images (green
pastures, still waters, a prepared table
Music: “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” (#138), other songs inspired by the 23 rd
Psalm, Closing Song - #2218 You Are Mine

May 10 – Mother’s Day

Scripture: I John 3:16-24
Sermon: “Love in Deed”
Theme: The practice of love is something more than we usually expect. The love that
“gives its life for others” is not just a feeling that comes and goes, not just a general
attitude one has in relationships, and not just talk. Love for Christians boils down to
conscious acts of love that flow from our faith. I will challenge the congregation to “love
in deed”.
Video: Lani – I want to show love on the screen, but not with all the usual clichés (e.g.
red hearts, mothers and kids). Images today should start with the familiar expression of
love we have with our “mothers of flesh and faith”, but then stretch people to question
how they might love “in deed”.
Music: KICK Kids sing a “teaser”
Note: Possible presentation from New Day’s Dawn

May 17 – KICK Musical – Pastor Diane to lead

Scripture: to be chosen
Sermon: G.P.S. Musical
Video: Bill – please coordinate with Diane

May 24 – Ascension Sunday, Memorial Day

Scripture: Acts 1:1-11
Sermon: “Take Out Order”
Theme: The movement of the Gospel is not “in” or “up” but “out”. Jesus commands his
disciples first to wait for power to come, but then to go out into all the world. We also
are commanded to go out with the Gospel and empowered by the Holy Spirit for the work
to be done.
Video: Bill – reflect on the call to “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and all the world”.
Choose images that show not the Christian community, but the world to which we are
sent with a message.
May 31 – Pentecost – Pastor Jerusha Preaching
Scripture: Acts 2:1-21
Sermon: “The Way I Heard It”
Theme: The sound of the Spirit – how it enters us and changes us even when we don’t see
it.
Video: Bill – Work with Pentecost Imagery – the color red, wind, fire, and artistic
renderings of Pentecost
