Three National Scholars alumnae received major national awards recently. Below from left, being congratulated by President James F. Barker, are Allison Godwin, 11, named a National Science Foundation Research Fellow with an award of more than $120,000 over the next three years; Lauren Harroff, 12, named a Fulbright Scholar to research alternative energy in Uganda; and Lauren Hock, 12, also named a Fulbright Scholar to teach English in Ecuador.

SUMMER STUDY ABROAD The 2011 Scholars visited Ireland (right, at Inishmore) in July before several weeks of study at Cambridge University (and a side trip to London to take in the Olympics, above). This years freshman Scholars will study at Stellenbosch University, outside of Cape Town, South Africa.

Since 2009, the NSP family current Scholars, alumni, and parents of both has donated nearly $145,000 to the NSP Foundation account. This year a record number of individual givers donated $48,364.12. New members of NSP team


DR. MICHAEL LEMAHIEU is the inaugural NSP Faculty Fellow. As Fellow, LeMahieu will teach and mentor Scholars, assist in Scholar selection, and coordindate intellectual enrichment programs. LeMahieu is an assistant professor of English and director of the Pearce Center for Professional Communication. CHELSEA MUHLHAHN joined the NSP this fall as the newest graduate assistant, after completing a degree in psychology at East Tennessee State University in May. As NSP GA, she advises Scholars, coordinates NSP programs, helps in Scholar selection, and works with the New Scholar Retreat Team.

O, Canada!

For the 2012 Maymester Educational Enrichment Expedition, a group of Scholars studied Canadian history in the spring with history professor Stephanie Barczewski, followed by a May trip exploring the culture, history and nature of Quebec and Newfoundland.

The newest Scholars come from six states (including the first Scholar from Louisiana), and boast an average SAT of 1517. Collectively they received acceptances to 16 top 20 schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report, and were offered more than $500,000 in annual scholarships from those institutions. As part of the New Scholar Retreat (below), the group discussed the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, who will keynote the sixth annual Clemson Literary Festival in April 2013.

2012 NSP Graduates Honor Advisors, Enroll in Top Graduate Programs

The 11 National Scholars who graduated in May 2012 ended their undergraduate careers by awarding NSP Awards of Distinction to the professors and advisors who mentored them to success in and out of the classroom. The 2012 honorees (pictured above with the students) were Raquel Anido, Languages; James Burns, History; Dana Irvin, Calhoun Honors College; Karen Kemper, Public Health Sciences; Toshiko Kishimoto, Languages; Vladimir Matic, Political Science; James McCubbin, Psychology; Thompson Mefford, Materials Science and Engineering; Jiro Nagatomi, Biomedical Engineering; and Windsor Sherrill, Public Health Sciences. The new alumni began graduate, law and medical school at some of the top institutions in the US. The impressive list of schools to which they were accepted includes Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, UNC-Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Yale. Three are completing graduate study at Clemson.
