Dear Students, Greetings and welcome to the College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University! The College of Dentistry believes that we need to educate a dentist who is fundamentally different in professional capabilities from his/her predecessors. We believe this because the world is changing rapidly. We provide education to dental students to prepare them to practice dentistry in the 21st century with knowledge and understanding of many different patient populations, dental specialties in varied practice settings. GMU dentists today are more culturally diverse than ever before. And, we hope that the dentists will redress the disparities in oral healthcare access that exist in UAE and across the world. The College presents a dynamic curriculum, which provides excellent clinical training, integrates the health sciences with clinical experience, and utilizes modern technology. Our success is based on maintaining a strong

faculty and staff, supported in their commitment to teaching and administration, professional development, scholarship, research, student and community service. Since its beginning College of Dentistry has played an integral part in the development of oral health care services and dental education. Introduction
The DMD program will educate students to become competent dentists with fundamental knowledge in biomedical and behavioral sciences. Graduates will be dedicated to serve the communities and will practice dentistry with the highest level of ethical and moral standards. The curriculum will focus and emphasize on the importance of research and encourage student participation in research activities. This program is tailored to meet the needs of the dental students in the region.

PROGRAM

Participating in the process of improving and implementing oral health care in UAE in cooperation with public and private sectors. Cooperating with local and international dental education and research centers in the field of research in order to enhance scientific knowledge in oral medicine and dental health care. Participating in local and international scientific meetings.

Curriculum:
The DMD program is a five-year program (10 semesters). The first two years of the curriculum are designed to educate students in biomedical and behavioral sciences. During the third and fourth year, students will concentrate on preclinical dental science courses followed by dental clinical courses providing a valuable clinical experience. Comprehensive patient care is taught in the fifth year with special considerations to management of the medically compromised patients. These clinical training sessions are carried out under the strict supervision of qualified faculty members. Students who fulfill the graduation requirements and successfully demonstrate the achievement of competencies will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

DMD Program
Goals, outcomes, effectiveness and curriculum practice, prepare a generation of general dental practitioners with clinical competency; produce graduates who possess the knowledge, skills and values to begin the practice of general dentistry serving citizens in UAE or any other geographic location of their practice.

Goals:
Maintain a high standard of dental education, research and services. Produce competent, confident and high employable dentists. Widening access to higher education by producing highly competent graduates that are capable of carrying out postgraduate studies at local and international universities. Enable graduates to develop their capacity to learn and to become independent learners. Provide broad based scientifically strong education in dentistry that equips the graduates to enter all areas of the profession and to adapt to changes that may occur during their professional life. Produce graduates who are able to communicate and deliver dental care both in community and hospital settings. Ensure that students acquire clear understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities towards their communities and humanity at large.

Undergraduate Admissions
All applicants shall meet all admission criteria as laid down in the Standards published by the Commission for Academic Accreditation, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAE and listed below: The applicant must have completed a minimum of 12 years of education in school and passed courses in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Higher Secondary School.

DMD PROGRAM

Students who complete their secondary school education as per UK curriculum must have completed at least two of the three science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in AS levels or A levels provided they have passed in all the three subjects in their O levels. The minimum grade required is C or D in AS or A level in Chemistry, Biology or Physics. The applicant must have secured a minimum of 80% marks as per U.A.E. Secondary School education standards or its equivalent in each of the three science subjects. The applicant must have completed 17 years of age on or before the 31st of December of the year of admission. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English and Sciences terminology. The applicant must have completed a course in English language proficiency such as TOEFL (180 CBT, 70IBT) or its equivalent in a standardized English language test, such as 5.0 IELTS or any other equivalent internationally recognized test. The applicant shall appear for a personal interview before the GMU Admissions Committee. The Admissions Committee shall evaluate all applicants for both cognitive and non-cognitive traits demonstrating their aptitude for the chosen area of

study. Applicants shall submit all academic documents and official transcripts / credits / grades / marks duly attested by the Ministry of Education, U.A.E. and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U.A.E. or U.A.E. Embassy in their country on admission into the program. On admission, the student shall submit a copy of the applicants passport and a copy of UAE nationality ID (Khulasat Al-Kayd), a Certificate of Good Conduct. A medical fitness certificate including blood test results, six recent color photographs, a written pledge by the applicant agreeing to comply with University rules and regulations, the application form duly filled up with complete details, a receipt for payment of a nonrefundable fee towards admission. All information regarding admissions shall appear in the catalog and in any other forms of advertisement circulated by the University.

SUMMER TRAINING

PROGRAM
The Summer Training Program (STP) which is a special feature of our University, is a unique concept introduced by the University to enable students to get international exposure and experience in clinical settings. Every year the University sends students to participate in STP, which helps students understand the methodologies in healthcare and research and expose them to various nuances of medical advances, which helps in carving out their own future. Training is conducted in leading

hospitals in several countries, including USA, UK, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, Switzerland, India, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan. It is of paramount importance that students must be exposed to some of the common as well as rare clinical conditions in different countries so that they get a wider clinical exposure.

CENTRE
The Information and Learning Centre provides yearround reference and information services and assists students in the development of effective search strategies. Staff members at the learning centre assist

students in identifying new and additional resources, confirming citations and providing instructions on how to use online databases and search engines.

Research
GMU Research Division reaches out to university students, general practitioners and specialists engaged in research in biomedical sciences and epidemiology, besides school children doing research in biomedical sciences. The aim is to promote close, short and long-term cooperation between several outstanding scientists

ABOUT GMCHRC
Gulf Medical College Hospital and Research Centre is the constituent teaching hospital of Gulf Medical University, the first teaching hospital under the private sector in U.A.E. was started in October 2002 by the Thumbay Group, U.A.E. With its unique approach to healthcare bringing together the best professional expertise and infrastructure, the hospital constantly strives to fulfill its motto of Healing through knowledge and wisdom. The mission of the hospital is to provide comprehensive and quality health care services to the community and to impart excellent educational opportunities for medical students in a stimulating environment.

PATIENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT


Affordable quality health care is not only a requirement of the community, but also the principle of the hospital. The Patient Affairs Department of the GMC Hospital takes special care in ensuring that appropriate care is extended to all sections of the patient population.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES


The hospital has a library, lecture halls and seminar rooms providing excellent academic environment for the students, internet facilities, video conferencing and other modern tools for medical education add to the learning facilities. Journal Club and Clinical Society meetings are held regularly during which academically interesting clinical cases are discussed in detail by different departments. This is a forum where clinical and pre-clinical faculty interact providing students an insight into important clinical conditions. The GMCHRC publishes Synapse, the monthly newsletter that brings the personalities & activities of the hospital into focus. The newsletter, in addition, carries very useful articles on health promotion. Common rooms are available, in the OPD block, complete with internet access for selfdirected learning, for both male and female students. This allows access to online databases both free and subscribed.

CLINICAL SERVICES
Being a multi-specialty hospital, it houses the departments of Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, E.N.T. Psychiatry, Urology and Special Clinics like Diabetics Clinic, Well Woman Center and Well Baby Clinic. Specialized services include a medical imaging department with state of the art equipment like multislice CT scan, mammography, ultrasound, Colordoppler Ultrasound and radiography. An advanced laboratory caters to the requirements of all the clinical departments and is equipped for regular and advanced investigations in biochemistry, clinical pathology, serology and hormone studies. Gulf Medical College Hospital has inpatient facilities for 250 patients distributed in different wards for Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and well equipped ICU and CCU. Additional facilities include VIP suites, private, semiprivate and general wards, which are fully furnished and well equipped to cater to different categories of patients.

COMMON ROOMS
Students appreciate having a room or a desk where they can write notes and keep their personal belongings. Students often describe the advantage of having a place where they can be found by staff and preceptors. Two rooms has been identified in the OPD block complete with internet access for self-directed learning for both male and female students. This allows access to online databases both free and subscribed.

OPERATION THEATRES
The five modern operation theatres have been specifically designed for operative procedures in an ultra-clean environment. Their construction features include stainless steel walls and ceiling, which allow for easy cleaning and maintenance.

THE HOSPITAL LIBRARY


The hospital library is meant to be a reference library only. Photocopying and computer print-out facilities are available. Computer facilities are available in the library and in designated areas in the hospital. Students and staff are expected to maintain complete silence in the library.

OUT-PATIENT SERVICES
The outpatient services function from 9:00am to 1:00pm and from 5:00pm to 9:00pm every day except on Fridays. Emergency services and pharmacy work are available round the clock on all days.

DENTAL CENTRE
GMC SUPER SPECIALITY DENTAL CENTRE offers all dental services such as cleaning, X-rays, composite fillings, porcelain crowns, bridges, Maryland bridges, IPS Empress Crowns, root canal treatment, post & cores, normal extractions, surgical extractions, partial dentures, full dentures and bleaching. In Orthodontic appliances the most advanced treatment techniques are offered which include lingual technique, Invisible braces, colored ceramic or composite braces, and space age titanium wire for comfort and esthetics. All instruments are processed through a hospital steam autoclave for the protection and safety of the patients. Normal individual Radiography, Digital X-ray unit, Panoramic X-ray unit, Intra Oral Camera and Tissue Contouring System are used in the department.

THE CAMPUS
The Gulf Medical University (GMU) Pre-clinical campus is located in the Al Jurf Area of Ajman, just behind the Sheikh Khalifa Hospital. The G.M.C. Hospital & Research Centre (GMCHRC) is located on the Ras Al Khaimah main road in the New Industrial Area of Ajman. The GMU and GMCHRC are about 12 Kms from Sharjah and about 40 kms from Dubai. The GMU and GMCHRC are linked to the metropolitan cities of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah with roads and highways that make traveling easy. The GMU campus includes modern facilities with classrooms, laboratories and learning center that are appropriately equipped with up-to-date instructional and educational aids. GMU encourages social, cultural and other extra-curricular activities and sports to enhance a comprehensive personality development. The spacious campus spotted with greenery contains student rest rooms, prayer halls, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, first aid clinic and student car park. The facilities are well connected with each other making it easy for students to move from one area to another.

Body and Soul Health Club & Spa, Ajman. The Club is first of its kind in Ajman offering extensive sports, recreation, fitness, health, social and youth programs. The Club is located on the grounds of the Gulf Medical University with very easy access from Ajman and with

ample parking. Our facilities include a luxury family pool and deck, an extensive fitness suite with a view, dance and yoga studios, a 3 court tennis center with our very own Pro, badminton, squash, volleyball and basketball courts, a soccer/cricket pitch and a ladies only section with a gym and private access to the ladies pool.

The Gulf Medical University Alumni Society exists to support the advancement of the College of Medicine (CoM), College of Dentistry (CoD), College of Pharmacy (CoP), College of Allied Health Sciences (CoAHS) and College of Graduate Studies (CoGS) its faculty, alumni, and student body to actively pursue the philosophy of Excellence in education of health professionals, biomedical research and health care services. To act as advocates for medical, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy and other allied health profession students. To act as advocates for physicians, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists and other allied health professionals in post doctoral medical and allied health education programs. To assist in recruiting qualified applicants to CoM, CoD, CoP and CoAHS. To assist in development activities for CoM, CoD, CoP and CoAHS. To promote and facilitate research in the clinical department of CoM, CoD, CoP and CoAHS. To provide counsel as requested by the leaders of CoP, CoD, CoP and CoAHS on matters related to the Colleges advancement
