Activity Planning Form Curriculum Area: Cognitive Science Age: 3-5

Daily Schedule Time: Tuesday 10:25-10:45 Planned by: Jennifer Avila Title of activity: Dinosaur Discovery

Rationale for Selection: (Based on childrens culture, family, community experiences, home language, specific assessed needs and interests) Children are curious about dinosaurs and how we know so much about them. Explaining that there are people called paleontologist that find dinosaur bones and study them will give them knowledge of what other people do as a job in our community. Anti-Bias Area:

Ability Race
Anti-Bias Skills:

To foster familiarity with differences in ability in putting together a dinosaur. To promote respect for human diversity in race by explaining that anyone can be a paleontologist.
Materials Needed:

Sand Water Containers Salt Pictures of dinosaur skeletons

Flour Trays Dough bones Poster boards Paint brushes

Objective of Activity: The child will be able to make a pattern with glue and macaroni to make a skeleton.

The child will be able to act as a paleontologist and put together a dinosaur skeleton. The child will be able to talk about their dinosaur skeleton.

DRDP Category: Measure 31 Engagement and persistence Measure 40 Fine motor skills Preparation: The teacher will need to mix one cup of flour, one cup of salt, and half a cup of water to make bones. In the classroom the teacher will have trays, and containers, fill them with sand and put the dough bones inside the sand. Procedure: (step by step) *Beginning (How will I introduce activity?) During large group time I will explain to the children what they will be doing in centers. I will say: Who knows what a paleontologist is? What is a skeleton? What is a fossil? I will have a discussion with the children depending on their answers about what a paleontologist is a fossil, and a skeleton. I will then say to them: A paleontologist is a scientist who digs up dinosaur bones and dinosaur fossils. I will have pictures of paleontologist of different races. A long time ago when dinosaurs lived on Earth, their bones, feet, and bodies Today you will get to be paleontologist. You will find your own dinosaur bones and put your own dinosaurs together like scientist. When I call your name please stand up. I will then call the childrens name that will go to Mrs. Mijaress group.

Dinosaurs go slow to your group I will them call Mrs. Chicass group. Dinosaurs go slow to your group. I will then call my group. Dinosaurs go slow to the table. *Middle: (How will I support/enhance/scaffold?) Once we are at the table I will tell the children: What is a paleontologist? What do they do? What do they find? How do they find that? I will answer questions according to the answers they give me. For example I will agree and give further explanation to expand their knowledge, or I will give a proper explanation I will now give the children the trays with the container of sand and dinosaur bones. I will give the children the paint brushes and tooth brushes so that they can be paleontologist. I will give the children some pape with their name on it so they can put their own dinosaur together. I will ask them: What kind of dinosaur are you going to make? Does your dinosaur have a lot of bones? Is it going to be a little dinosaur? Is it going to be a big dinosaur? I will have a poster of dinosaur skeletons so the children can use them as a guide. I will ask them Which dinosaur do you like?

Can you find more bones? What is that bone? Do you think it is a bone, or a tail? Did it walk on two feet or four feet? When I see certain children finishing I will have the children start to put their skeletons in their cubbies. *End: (How will I bring activity to conclusion and transition to next activity?) As most of the children are done I will tell the children there are only about 2 more minutes and we will sit in the carpet. Please finish your dinosaur bones. I will walk with my group to the carpet. If a child is finished before the rest of the children I will tell the child. I would like you to sit here with our group until the rest of the group is finished making their skeleton bones. Once we are all finished, I will go sit with the children for dismissal. If there is to many of my children still not finished with their activity and one of the other teachers group is finished sooner, I will have one of the other teachers sit in my seat.
