MULTI-ROOM AV: ON THE RISE

The multi-room AV market has moved from the domain of wealthy mansions and into our
homes. We want our entertainment to disappear into the walls. The TV sets need to be
slim and mounted discretely against walls. The magnitude of boxes, like Foxtel and Blu-Ray
players, are being hidden in one location and distributed around the house.
The ongoing costs are low, due to less hardware, power and rentals, but it sounds
complicated, right? Let's discuss what's better...  1.) Give up and get a pay TV spare room
box  2.) Distributing pay TV over powerlines or  3.) Distributing pay TV via your antenna
system.
01   Rent a spare room pay TV box or distribute it around the house?

A couple of factors needs to be considered:

• Installation costs – the major provider charges around $150 all up*, but there are
promos and more basic boxes which will reduce costs.
• Physical impact – you'll need considerable space for a pay TV box, while distribution
solutions are more quiet and discrete.
• How you use the box – would you like to keep your recordings on different boxes or
keep all the recordings in one place?
• Ongoing costs – the rental costs can be around $25 per room*, while multi-room
distribution is generally free. So what's the cost over the full term?
• Content – if you have kids, what's okay for the parents room, may not be okay for the PHYSICAL IMPACT

Setting up equipment takes time and therefore money. Having to do this with a
remote control becomes a test of patience and skill! Menus need to be logical
and will often involve 3 or more layers of menu.
The industry's best products attempted to pre-configure their products and include
automatic features ie. auto-tuning on TV sets or auto speaker configuration (upon
the connection of the receiver's microphone). With products including Ethernet
ports, we can now customise our settings over a computer.
Recently we played with the latest Resi-Linx Digital Modulators, although they are
already preset to Australia, the renaming of sources was a cinch. You can then
save the settings and clone them across to other units.
From the screenshot, we can see that we've renamed one source 'Security-DVR'
and another 'Foxtel'. You can also play with other settings like attenuation, output
channel or any other setting. Expect to save more time and less stress with these
features...
