IB FRENCH AB INITIO SYLLABUS Year 1, 11th grade

The course gives students opportunities to practice and explore the language in a range of everyday activities as well as develop intercultural understanding. Language (vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and grammatical structures) and culture will be introduced using several different types of text and discourse, and based around the 3 Ab Initio themes. Each theme has its own list of topics to be covered amounting to 20 topics in total throughout the course (see below).

IB Ab Initio Assessments

SCIS Internal assessment The course will be assessed in the following fashion according to category weights. Listening and Speaking 20% Writing 30% Reading 30% Unit Tests/Quizzes/Finals 20% Assessment: Tasks set in the classroom will assess all four primary skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Participation during the task will be assessed as well as the final submitted piece. Tasks will be assessed according to a rubric with descriptors based on the Ab Initio IB assessment criteria for language, message and format. Assessment tasks include, but are not limited to: LISTENING: Listening to and responding to a song/ poem/ speech/ film extract/interview etc. SPEAKING: Description of a picture, oral debate, question/answer, presentation, survey, interview, speech, discussion, role-play. READING: Comprehension and analysis of a variety of texts. WRITING: Writing in different styles and registers for a variety of purposes including articles, blogs, letters (formal and informal), speeches and diary entries. 2

Homework : Homework tasks will assess all four primary skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Tasks set will include several of the kind listed above and all will be posted on my website http://students.scisdragons.net/jfarmer/. Students should expect to be assigned homework for every class in addition to the long-term written assessment project. These assignments and projects must be handed in the day they are due and must be written legibly. If work is late then it will be held in Power School as missing and at zero until such a time that the work is completed. Any student who plagiarises work or who is strongly suspected of having used a translator programme, will also receive zero for their assignment. Students are automatically expected to study all new vocabulary and grammar the day it is introduced and may be quizzed on it the following class. In brief, students are strongly encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to practise the language both in and outside the classroom.
