Methylamine & Derivatives

Methylamine & Derivatives

Davy Process Technology has a comprehensive portfolio of process technologies for the production of a wide range of industrial amines. These technologies have recently been the subject of a rigorous overhaul so that they are the safest and most cost effective processes that are available for licence. Based upon the world renowned Leonard Process, our technologies are well proven over many years in the majority of the world's operating plants. We have a full process engineering capability to licence cost effective amine technologies with performance guarantees for amine products including: Methylamines, Dimethyl Formamide, Choline Chloride, N Methyl Pyrrolidone, Ethanolamines and Alkyl Alkanolamines.

Methylamine
Produced from methanol and ammonia, methylamines have many uses finding application in a wide range of pesticides, surfactants and other speciality chemicals. Our process has continued to be refined and now offers a highly cost effective, reliable design with low environmental impact. These advanced process designs provide wide flexibility to select the optimum ratio of products (mono, di, and tri methylamine) depending on the particular market demand. Excellent catalyst efficiency enables high product qualities to be produced with low utility costs and minimised effluents. Plant technology can be tailored to produce both anhydrous and the more easily transported aqueous material.

Our specialist simulation capability enables us to deal with the non-ideal separations that are inherent in amines manufacture.

Dimethylformamide
Dimethylformamide (DMF) is produced from the reaction of dimethylamine and carbon monoxide at low temperatures and pressures in an advanced proprietary reactor. Homogenous catalyst is separated from the crude DMF which is then refined to a high quality final product which is suitable for a wide range of solvent applications. Our process has been used in over ten plants and is well proven commercially. The design integrates well to a methylamines plant to enable production of this high added value material.

Choline Chloride
Choline Chloride is a complex vitamin that is an important nutrient in poultry, pig and other animal feeds. It is applied as a 70% solution to cereal for addition to animal feed. Both batch and continuous variations of this process have been commercially demonstrated over a range of capacities. This process incorporates a number of features to safely handle ethylene oxide and trimethylamine used within the process. It is highly efficient with low utility requirements and produces no liquid or vapour effluents.

Dimethylacetamide
Dimethylacetamide is a high boiling, polar solvent that is used in a wide range of applications. The most widespread uses are as a polar solvent in acrylic fibre spinning or the manufacture of polyester films. Our DMAC process is well proven in two plants in Turkey and India, and their products are suitable for all the normal DMAC applications.

N Methyl Pyrrolidone
We have developed a low pressure process for the production of N Methyl Pyrrolidone starting from mono methylamine and gamma butyrolactone. The low operating pressure enables simplification of the flowsheet to be achieved so our process is now the technology of choice.

Ethanolamines
Our ethanolamine technology is a low cost, efficient, safe and reliable process that produces excellent quality mono, di and tri ethanolamine products. The process incorporates a simple non-catalytic reactor system that operates under very mild conditions leading to low by-product formation, high plant efficiency and high quality products. A mixture of three amines is formed, Monoethanolamine, Diethanolamine and Triethanolamine and we are able to offer both industrial grade and chemical grades suitable for a wide range of surfactant, gas purification and detergent uses.

Ethylamines, Propylamines and Butylamines

Davy Process Technology has proven technologies for the production of a range of higher amines including ethylamines, propylamines and butylamines. These plants can be either purpose built for a single product or can be designed to operate on a campaign basis to produce a range of amines. They have considerable flexibility and are able to flexibly respond to changing market conditions to give the most profitable output of the following products: Ethylamines: Ethylamines are used in a wide range of applications including agrochemical production, as pharmaceutical intermediates and as a foundry core curing agent.

Propyl Amines: The major use for monoisopropylamine is in the production of glyphosate salt (Round-up). N-propylamines are used in agrochemical production, particularly dinitroaniline herbicide. Butylamines: Butylamines are produced from normal, secondary and tertiary butanol feedstock and have a wide range
of specialist applications for pesticide production and as a hardener for epoxy and rubber compounds.

Cyclohexylamine: Cyclohexylamine is used as a corrosion inhibitor in steam systems. It also has uses in the
production of herbicides and rubber chemicals or for the production cyclamate sweeteners.

Ethylhexylamine: 2-Ethylhexylamine has uses as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, dyes, insecticides, rubber
accelerators and antioxidants. It is used as a flotation agent and corrosion inhibitor.
