Part 9 A One-Name Study of the descendants of James Teece & Sarah Horton c1746 Broseley

9-1. James TEECE There is uncertainty as to where James was born. Just looking at registered births leads us to a James TEECE born 17 Mar 1743 at Clive but, although he fits in timewise, his birthplace Clive is roughly 20 miles from Broseley where the marriage occurred - this in the mid 1700s when families tended to stay in or near their parish of birth. We know that a James TEECE died in the Broseley Poor House on 2 Feb 1814 when his ae was said to be 72, whereas the Clive James would have been 70. This could be a reasonable fit apart from the distance separating the two parishes. On the other hand, there could be an unregistered James birth in Broseley and there is a candidate family with Thomas TEECE and Mary SIMPSON [2-4] living in Broseley and having children in this period. Joyce Teece has drawn attention to the fact that (1) Sarah TEECE (below) married a Richard JONES and their son signed documents for Emma TEECE who appears on Thomas and Mary's tree (2) Richard JONES and Sarah lived next door to James and Mary TEECE who are also on that tree and (3) when their son Noah bought the Prince of Wales Public House it was the same Richard JONES who signed the papers. There was obviously some relationship between the families. Looking at the registered children of Thomas Teece and Mary Simpson, there is Jane born 18 Jun 1749 followed by Thomas born 6 Oct 1751, leaving little or no room for an unregistered James in 1750. Married Sarah HORTON 28 Feb 1767, in Broseley, St.Leonard. She was born about 1750, and died 1810 in Broseley Poor House. Children of James TEECE and Sarah HORTON: i. Eleanora TEECE, born 6 Sep 1767, in Broseley, Shrops, died 1768. ii. Ursula TEECE, born 30 Apr 1769, in Broseley, Shrops. 2 iii. Benjamin TEECE, born 10 Feb 1772, died 8 Aug 1842, in Broseley Wood. 3 iv. George TEECE, born 26 Feb 1776. v. Sarah TEECE, born 22 Oct 1780, in Broseley, St.Leonards. Married Richard JONES. They lived at The Quarry, Red Lake next door to James TEECE, son of Thomas TEECE her cousin. Their son Richard JONES (born 1817) was a Chemist in Oakengates. Contact [Peter Buckton] 9-2. Benjamin TEECE, [9-1], born 10 Feb 1772 He later went to Wolverhampton, and died 8 Aug 1842, in Broseley Wood. Married Sarah BAUGH 19 May 1793, in Broseley, St.Leonards. Teece formerly Ashwood - this was a mystery until my friend Joyce Hughes uncovered the fact that Jesse's mother was illegitimate - Harriet dau of Margaret Ashwood bap 26 Dec 1813 at Broseley - thus Harriet Ashwood. When her mother married - Margaret Ashwood marr. Joseph Holmes 18 May 1820 at Benthall - Harriet took the family name and became the Harriet Holmes that married Joseph Teece, later giving her maiden name as Hannah Ashwood).
