Title:To find out the percentage purity of ferrous fumarate in the provided capsule powder by 0.1M Ammonium cerium(iv) sulphate(V.S.) as oxidizing agent.
C4H2FeO4 Mol.Wt.169.9

Chemicals required:
1)Sample powder , 2)0.1M Ceric ammonium sulphate (V.S.), 3)Ferroin indicator, 4)1M Sulphuric acid.

Apparatus required:
1) Burette(50ml), 2)Graduated pipette, 3)Water bath,4)Conical flask, 5)Analytical weighing balance.

Theory:
Cerium ion(iv) oxidizes Ferrous(ii) ion to Ferric(iii)ion in acidic medium Fe2+ Fe3+ + e Ce4+ + e Ce3+

C4 H2 FeO4 (169.9) =Fe= 1000ml (M)2(NH4)2SO4,Ce(SO4)2,2H2O (V.S.) 0.01699g =1ml (0.1M)Ceric ammonium sulphate(V.S.)

Procedure:
i)Preparation and standardization of 0.1Ammonium cerium(iv ) sulphate (V.S.):

Dissolve 32.5 g of ammonium cerium(IV)sulphate in a mixture of 15 ml of sulphuric acid and 250 ml of water . Allow to cool and dilute to 500 ml with water . Ascertain its exact concentration in the following manner. To 25 ml of the solution add 2 g of potassium iodide and 150 ml of water . Titrate immediately with 0.1M sodium thiosulphate VS using 1 ml of starch solution as indicator. Each ml of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate VS is equivalent to 63.26 mg of (2NH4)2SO4,Ce(SO4)2,2H2O or calculate factor of the solution by formula S1.V1.= S2V2.

ii)Preparation and standardization of 0.1M Sodium thiosulphate(V.S.): Dissolve 12.5 g of sodium thiosulphate and 0.1 g of sodium carbonate in sufficient carbon dioxide-free water to produce 500 ml. Dissolve 0.200 g of potassium bromate, weighed accurately, in sufficient water to produce 250.0 ml. To 50.0 ml of this solution add 2 g of potassium iodide and 3 ml of 2 M hydrochloric acid, keep in dark for 2 minutes and titrate with the sodium thiosulphate solution using starch solution, added towards the end of the titration, as indicator until the blue colour is discharged. l ml of 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate is equivalent to 0.002784g of KBrO3 . f1. of sodium thiosulphate(0.1M) = Weigh of potassium bromate (g) . Vol. of sodium thiosulphate consumed X10X 0.002784g =

= f2. of sodium thiosulphate(0.1M) = Weigh of potassium bromate (g) . Vol. of sodium thiosulphate consumed X10X 0.002784g = = iii)Assay:

Weigh accurately about g. of capsule powder and transfer into a conical flask. Add 7.5ml of 1M sulphuric acid and heat gently until brown particles dissolve. Cool, add 25ml of water and titrate immediately against 0.1M ammonium cerium(iv) sulphate (V.S.) until light blue colour appears. 1ml (0.1M)Ceric ammonium sulphate(V.S.) is equivalent to 0.01699g of ferrous fumarate (C4 H2 FeO4).

Calculation:
(i)Percentage purity of ferrous fumarate powder = Vol. of titrant X f. of titrant X 0.01699 g X 100 % Wt. of sample taken(g)

(i)Percentage purity of ferrous fumarate powder = Vol. of titrant X f. of titrant X 0.01699 g X 100 % Wt. of sample taken(g)

Mean=
