The first page submitted must be aimed at adult readers. All genres are welcome. However, entries should be suitable for publication on the Literature Works website which has an audience of all ages. You should have completed the first three chapters of your novel at time of submission. Print and send three (3) copies of the each first page submission and synopsis (single-sided on white A4 paper). All entries should be accompanied by a completed cover sheet. This is the only place where your name should appear; entries are judged anonymously. Entries that carry identification apart from on the cover sheet will be disqualified. Electronic submissions are not accepted. 4 Fees 5 for the first entry and 3 for all subsequent entries. All fees payable in pounds sterling. There is no limit to the amount of entries provided the appropriate fees are paid and all entries are clearly stated on the cover sheet. Fees are payable by cheque only in Sterling only. Cheques must be from a UK bank and should be payable to Literature Works with the senders name and address on the back.

Literature Works will not collect submissions that do not have the correct postage, and these will be returned to the Post Office. 6 Returns, corrections, refunds and acknowledgement Entries will not be returned. Please keep copies: all submissions are shredded at competition closing. No corrections can be made after submission, nor fees refunded after entry. If you require acknowledgement of receipt of your postal entry please enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked MY FIRST PAGE HAS ARRIVED! 7 Eligibility The Literature Works First Page Writing Prize is open to anyone over the age of 18, resident in the UK. Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must not have been previously published in print or online, or been placed in any other writing competition. The first page/s submitted must be original, fictional, and entirely the authors own work, and not infringe the copyright or any other rights of any third party and not be defamatory of any living person or corporate body and be suitable for an adult audience but not unsuitable thereby for a general audience when published on literatureworks.org.uk. Entries must be in the entrants own name. The Award is not open to employees or trustees of Literature Works or their direct family members. 8 Winners The winner/s will be informed by December 2nd 2013, and announced online soon after. Winners must be able to provide a photograph and short biography of themselves for inclusion in this announcement. Please note that winners cannot be paid their expenses to attend any prize giving event. All entries are guaranteed to be read twice by a dedicated team of readers. The judges decision is final.

No written feedback will be given on any of the entries other than 1 Prize or any correspondence entered into regarding the outcome of the competition by the judges, Literature Works or Darley Anderson Agency at any time. 9 Copyright Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author, but Literature Works will retain the right to publish winning entries online and in future promotional material. It goes without saying that if the winners go on to publish their novels, well be delighted! 10 The judging All entries will be read and judged by an initial team of readers. A shortlist will be prepared for the final judging. The winning writer will be contacted personally by email or by telephone. The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The judging will be fair and independent. The judges are: Sarah Duncan is a novelist and screenwriter whose most recent novel, Kissing Mr Wrong, was shortlisted for the Romantic Novel of the Year. Her novels are published in fourteen countries around the world including the USA, France and Germany. Sarah is the Royal Literary Fund fellow at the University of Bath and has taught the Fiction Writing Workshop for the University of Bristol for the past eight years. Born in 1970, he read English at Oxford, then worked as a farm hand, teacher and lawyer, before turning to writing full time in 2001. As well as writing fiction, Christopher is a travel writer for The Independent. He is also the Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Bristol University and has tutored many creative writing courses for The Arvon Foundation, The Faber Academy, and Curtis Brown Creative.

11 The Prizes 1st: 1500 and a free reading of the first three chapters of your related novel by Darley Anderson Agency who will provide an A4 single-page feedback on this submission. 2nd: 350 3rd: 150 Darley Andersons agent is: Clare Wallace joined the Darley Anderson Agency in January 2011. As the Head of Rights, she negotiates deals for translation rights all around the world for all the Agencys authors. Clare represents authors both in the UK and the US including Kim Slater, Polly Ho-Yen, Adam Perrott and illustrators Jon Holder, Loretta Schauer and Pete Williamson. Clare graduated with a first from a BA in Creative Writing and Cultural Studies at Bath Spa University and went on to gain a distinction on the MA in Creative Writing. Winners will be announced in the Literature Works online newsletter, and thereafter on the Literature Works website. 12 Agreement Entrants will be deemed to have accepted to observe these guidelines without reservation and to have agreed to be bound by them when entering this competition. These rules and the entry submitted in accordance with them shall constitute a contract governed by the exclusive laws and the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. Entries which contravene these guidelines will be disqualified and fees will not be returned.
