odays readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widows only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in todays second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Fathers Day Remembrances

Respect Life
As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so shall your God rejoice in you. Todays first reading from Isaiah shows us how much God delights in human life. He rejoices in us as in a bride. He gives himself to us as a bridegroom is called to do for his beloved. He protects and defends us, and leads us to the life that never ends. His commitment to humanity is the source of ours. Like him, we are to give ourselves for the good of others, starting with the most vulnerable lives children at the very beginning of their development in the womb.

Padre Pio Plaza

Thanks to all for visiting our Padre Pio Plaza and for your generosity! To make the Plaza a beautiful place of worship, please do not leave any flowers, candles, or notes. Offerings and notes can be put in the box on the wall and the parish will purchase what is necessary for the decoration of the plaza. For more information you can call Teresa Helfand from the ICF at 773-763-0507. Thanks!

Faith can be Funny

The new priest stood at the church door greeting the members as they left the Sunday morning service. Most of the people were very generous telling the new priest how much they liked his message, except for one man who said, "The was a very dull and boring sermon, pastor." A few minutes later, the same man again appeared in line and said, "I don't think you did much preparation for your message." Once again, the man appeared, this time muttering, "You really blew it. You didn't have a thing to say, pastor." Finally, the priest could stand it no longer. He went to one of the deacons and inquired about the man. "Oh, don't let that guy bother you," said the deacon. "He's a little slow. All he does is go around repeating whatever he hears other people saying."
