Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Gospel of Luke, written around A.D. 8090, is best understood in light of the authors background. Luke was
not Jewish, nor was he among the first generation of Christian disciples. He did not know or travel with Jesus. To write his Gospel, he depended on the testimony and traditions of eyewitnesses to Jesus life and death. Luke, as a Gentile, was intent on sharing Jesus life story, teachings, and message of universal Salvation. In the passage before this Sundays Gospel, Jesus cures the dying slave of a Gentile. Throughout his Gospel, Luke demonstrates that Gods promises to Israel are fulfilled in Jesus and that Salvation through Jesus Christ is extended to all people. In this Sundays Gospel, Jesus and his disciples are approaching the city of Naim when they come upon a large funeral procession. The only son of a widow is being carried out. Jesus, filled with pity for the grieving mother, tells her not to weep. He then touches the coffin and tells the young man to arise. With that, the dead man gets up and starts speaking. The crowd, amazed at what they have just witnessed, praise God, saying, A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people. This is reminiscent of what we hear in todays First Reading from 1 Kings when the prophet Elijah raised from the dead the only son of a widow. God: It is truly the word of the LORD that you speak. For all these people, at this point in time, Jesus is a great prophet doing wonders and speaking in the name of God. Even John the Baptist sent his followers to listen to Jesus and report back to him. Johns question was: Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another? St. Michaels Parish celebrated the second annual Corpus Christi with a special Mass and an outdoor procession. The ceremony was celebrated last Sunday June 2nd, 2013 at 9am at the Good Shepherd Chapel. The Knights Color Guard were represented by the District Deputy 24 Brother Don DeClue and St. Michaels Fourth degree Brother Knights. Two awards were presented at the end of the Mass by the District Deputy Knight Don DeClue and St. Michaels Grand Knight Timothy McCarthy. The first award was for Family of the Quarter, and was presented to Brother Bill Holt and his lovely spouse Mrs. Pat Holt. The second award was presented to our Pastor Father Joseph Lea for Priest of the Year. Both awards were well deserved awards and we are very happy that our Pastor and the Holt family were recognized. NEW YORK (CNS) -- In the 1990s, comedian Jerry Seinfeld made a hit -- and a fortune -- with an eponymous TV series which was, he claimed, "about nothing." Along comes its cinematic sister, "Frances Ha" (IFC), the tale of a feckless 27-year-old who's waiting for her life to happen. Set, like "Seinfeld," in New York City, "Frances Ha" also pays homage to the films of Woody Allen in its use of physical comedy and moody soundtrack. Director Noah Baumbach ("Greenberg") -- who cowrote the screenplay with the film's leading lady, Greta Gerwig -- chose to shoot the movie in blackand-white, casting Gotham in a warm and fuzzy glow. Frances (Gerwig) is a free-spirited dancer, living with her best friend, Sophie (Mickey Sumner), in Sophie's Manhattan apartment. Frances is a drifter, dreamer and overall loser, branding herself as "undateable," yet all the while retaining a sunny outlook. When the ambitious Sophie decides to move out and, eventually, live with her boyfriend Patch (Patrick Heusinger), Frances is cast adrift, suddenly homeless with no real job and few prospects. Not that this especially bothers her, as she flits from party to party, telling anyone who will listen, "I'm trying to be proactive about my life" and "I don't really do what I do." A rescue of sorts comes in the form of a small tax refund from the IRS, which Frances blows on dinner with Lev (Adam Driver). This leads not to romance but a new place to stay and two fun-loving drinking buddies, Lev and his roommate, Benji (Michael Zegen). And so we follow our goofy heroine as she faces each new day, impulsive and selfish yet adorably endearing, just waiting for something to happen. She visits her parents in California, flies to Paris on a whim, even moves back in at her old college dorm. Where is this heading, you may ask? There is indeed an "a-ha" moment at the end of the film (which explains the "Ha" of the title), but the self-absorbed Frances is hardly a role model for today's twentysomethings. Especially when she dispenses unintelligible advice such as, "Sometimes it's good to do what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do it." The film contains cohabitation, frequent sex talk, many uses of profanity and much crude language. The Catholic News Service classification is L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. VOLUNTEERS COORDINATOR (volunteer position)

St. Michaels Parish at Fort Gordon is looking for a dedicated, hardworking person, sensitive to the ways God calls and equips people for mission in daily life, to help the members of our congregation grow in both spirituality and in participation. Positive communication skills, including both quality listening skills and comfort with cold-calling, are a necessity! Ability to maintain open and often communication with parish volunteers. Duties will include, but are not limited to: - Establish and maintain relationships with congregation members and community organizations to assist the congregation in accomplishing its missional responsibilities. - Create and maintain databases of congregational member information such as skills and interests. Such databases may include some or all software such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher. - Establish and oversee recruitment procedures to meet specific group needs for activities and functions of volunteers. - Evaluate the work of volunteers to ensure that work is of appropriate quality and that resources are used effectively. - Assist in the assimilation process of new members. Work with the Parish Life Coordinator to acknowledge, recognize, and support volunteers as well as recommend new directions for ministry. - Help connect members with existing ministries and programs within the congregation. - Report questions, comments, or concerns regularly to the Parish Life Coordinator. - Other duties as assigned by the Pastor and/or Parish Life Coordinator or as deemed necessary. Care Ministry Coordinator

We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Care Ministry. This ministry assists parishioners who are sick at home or hospital. The ministry coordinator is responsible for coordinating visits in consultation with the senior pastor and PLC. The coordinator will be willing to visit parishioners who request this assistance, share the Word of God and prayer with them, and offer Holy Communion at the time of visit. Pastoral Visitations
There is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interact with their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether such interaction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost soul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Joseph would like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of meeting and knowing him. He would like to visit parishioners homes twice a week, so if you are interested in receiving the special visit of our Pastor, please contact the PLC Lola Rivera to schedule a Pastoral visitation @ (706) 791-4829, or plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org. Father Joseph is looking forward to visit your home, talk and pray with you and your family in earnestness and humility.

Confessions
Private confessions at St. Michaels are available for you before Mass on Saturdays 4pm and Sundays at 8am in the confessional box located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, but also face-to-face and by appointment at your convenience. Confessions are available in Spanish when Father Joseph celebrates mass.

Matrimony
Arrangements for marriage preparation should be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date. If there has been a prior marriage that has not been annulled by the Catholic Church, more time may be required. Participation in a marriage preparation workshop/program is required. Initially, all requests of information should be directed to the Catholic Pastor at (267) 243-5861.

In order to receive Baptism, parent(s) must be registered and attending Mass. Dates and times of Baptism can ONLY be set after registering for Pre-Baptism class, and talking with a Priest. Adoration on Wednesday
Join us for adoration this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm. We meet every week to spend and dedicate an hour in Eucharistic Adoration. This is a great way to increase your faith and help you with your prayer life.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

ADULTS PROGRAMS Coffee and Theology
Coffee and Theology is a religious education for adults that meet on Sundays at 11:30am at the RSO Bld. 29601. Contact Tom Dean (706) 860-6946 if you have any question.

Bible Study
St. Michaels Bible Study is on Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the activity room. We are studying a Bible Study on the Books of Hebrews. Contact Tom Dean.

RE SPOTLIGHT NEWS

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host by the Divine Power of God -thrust into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Catechists Needed
We are recruiting catechists for the new CCD year. If you are interested in teaching religious education, please contact us. Experience is not required. We will provide you with the training and teaching resources that you need. We need teachers and substitute teachers for grades PreK through High School. CCD Registration
CCD registration is open throughout the year. Please know that in order to receive the Holy Sacrament of First Communion or Confirmation, children need to attend Religious Education as required. Contact the RE Coordinator Adriana Gramer if you have questions.

Religious Education Coordinator Office Hours

The Religious Education Coordinator is available to meet with parents for enrolling their children and answer questions and concerns at the RE Center, building 9th, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 12pm.
