Misconceptions of Spray Lubrication
Applying lubricant via spray is often a misunderstood process. The fact is, done correctly, spray lubrication is one of the most effective and efficient ways to lubricate your dies.

Discover the top ten most questionable claims in the industry and learn the truth behind fully optimized spray systems.
1

MYTH: When spraying theres a lot of

wasted lubrication.

FACT: Through proper nozzle selection and system

engineering, spraying has equaled or surpassed many application methods already in use. In many instances, spray application has gone on to save additional lubricants and its associated costs. 2

Broad range of set-ups enables precise coverage for various conveyor widths or products.

MYTH: Spray lubrication causes excessive misting

and there is little to no way to control it.

FACT: Often times the wrong set up is used. With

proper operating pressures, nozzles, spray tips and flow rates misting becomes a non-issue. High Transfer Efficiency set-ups work especially well for controlling misting. 3

MYTH: Spraying doesnt work with the

high viscosity lubricants.

FACT: High viscosity lubricants are really no different

from a spray application stand-point. High viscosities will require additional pump pressure to produce its intended performance. This higher pressure may not be possible with the injector-style pumps that most systems utilize. When matched with a fully pressurized system, the proper spray tip or set-up, higher viscosity lubricants pose little problem.

Top 10 Misconceptions of Spray Lubrication

4

MYTH: Lubrication requires much maintenance and

much downtime; nozzles clog often.

MYTH: With variable widths accurate coverage

is not attainable.

FACT: With an optimized spray system maintenance

is reduced. With precision placement of lubricant there is less mess to clean and reduced downtime. The right nozzle choice will significantly reduce clogging. 5

FACT: One nozzle does not fit all widths. There are
different nozzles available for different types of widths. By switching nozzles both smaller and wider stock receive accurate coverage. In some instances it may be best to add a nozzle for a wider width or plug a nozzle for a more narrow width. 9

MYTH: Spray adjustments between jobs and types of

lubricants are very time consuming and messy.

FACT: If done improperly or with the wrong tools for

the job this can be a problem. Remember to choose a quality spray system, one that will give you all the settings, adjustment and timing controls you need to perform your lube operation without problem. Look into additional tanks to make lube changeover effortless. Each tank can be labeled and stored for future use. 6

MYTH: Pumps will often break down with

a spraying system.

FACT: For the answer to this we need to define

pumps. Most, if not all, systems on the market offer an injector-style pump; that is to say a small air driven cylinder that pushes the lubricant when actuated with compressed air. Each of these pumps has a myriad of parts that need to be serviced on a regular basis. If any of the parts, such as diaphragms, check valves, o-rings, etc. become neglected, the pump will fail and usually at the most inopportune time. Using a pressurized tank system with few or no moving parts will solve the pump problem and give you much better performance overall. 10

MYTH: Its impossible to place lubrication just where

you need it.

FACT: With the variety of spray nozzles, spray

patterns, and mounting accessories such as Stay-In-Place hoses, and magnetic mounting bases, spray can reach the hardest to get at areas. Options are available to plug or add nozzles as needed and spray controllers offer optimal control over lubrication placement. 7

MYTH: A good spray systems is cost prohibitive. FACT: Different levels of spray systems are available
with basic lubrication systems that perform well and are very economical. Often times stampers find that a system will pay for itself in a short amount of time by saving on liquid consumption, scrap, maintenance and downtime.

MYTH: In order to get even coverage on the die,

overspray is necessary.

FACT: Spray systems are very precise. With the

correct system in place spray offers the best performance in uniform even coverage with the exact amount of lubrication needed.
