Key Lesson Elements What is the Teacher Doing? Do Now (3-5 minutes): Quick review on rug with addition problems: call out a few problems and have students raise their hands to answer. (3 + 2, 4 + 5) I Do Input (1-2 Key teaching points): Introduce objective: Begin doing my 3 practice problems with cut out squares that look like base ten blocks (they will use the base ten blocks) Steps for solving two digit addition problems: Anchor chart 1. Start in ones column 2. Add the numbers 3. Write the answer under the line in the ones column 4. Move to tens column 5. Add the numbers 6. Write answer under the line in the tens column SO WHAT IS THE ANSWER? Think aloud the entire process, especially with the base ten blocks. How to use the base ten blocks: Have students draw physically on their desk a t chart with the tens and ones column. Show how they will put their base ten blocks in the appropriate spots and add their numbers. Elaborate on how to transfer the answer to the worksheet. SET EXPECTATIONS FOR WRITING AND ERASING ON DESKS! What are the Students Doing? Raising hands

Check for Understanding: What are my steps for solving these problems? We Do Guided Practice: Move to promethium board and do 5 practice problems together. Have students use the base ten blocks to help solve the various problems., while using their t chart on their desk. Students will work together to solve some problems. Throughout each problem, elaborate on the steps to follow. Have students come up to the board to show their work to the class. Check for Understanding: What are the steps you should always follow to solve these problems today? You Do Independent Practice: Students work independently on their worksheet. When finished they will read silently till I direct them to play a game. They still can use their base ten blocks. Pull small group who need extra assistance. Check for Understanding: Exit Ticket (aligned to lesson objective) or assessment: 3 problems. Closing/Preview for next lesson: Tomorrow we will work on the exact same thing! Because practice makes perfect!
