Prlogo El 4 de setiembre de 1989, con motivo del 50 aniversario del comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, emiti TVE un documental de la BBC sobre Hitler. A lo largo del programa pudo escucharse en repetidas ocasiones el adjetivo mesinico, siempre con connotaciones negativas. A nadie le extraar, porque trminos como Mesas, mesianismo, mesinico, han terminado adquiriendo un matiz despreciativo, reflejo de una mezcla de locura, orgullo, falsas ilusiones y catstrofe final. Pocos trminos -quiz ninguno- expresan tan perfectamente como Mesas la tragedia de las palabras y los profundos cambios semnticos a que se ven sometidas a lo largo de la historia. Lo que inicialmente era simple designacin de la persona ungida para cumplir una funcin (rey, sacerdote, profeta) pasa a designar al salvador esperado y anhelado, y termina haciendo referencia a la terrible posibilidad de que un loco visionario alcance el poder y seduzca a las multitudes, arrastrndolas en su camino hacia la autodestruccin. Este libro se centra en la aportacin del Antiguo Testamento y de la literatura apcrifa juda al tema del mesianismo. El lector de lengua castellana dispone de dos estudios sobre el tema: la obra clsica de Sigmund Mowinckel, El que ha de venir. Mesianismo y Mesas, y la ms divulgativa de Henri Cazelles, El Mesas de la Biblia. La primera ofrece una visin sistemtica, la segunda elige el enfoque histrico. A diferencia de ambas, mi inters se centra en el anlisis de los textos, dejando para ltimo lugar la posible reconstruccin de la historia de la esperanza mesinica. De este modo, mi estudio no interfiere con ninguno de los anteriores, sino que los complementa. El deseo de objetividad me ha llevado tambin a no mezclar los distintos tipos de libros del Antiguo Testamento. A veces podran usarse un salmo, un orculo proftico y una narracin histrica para reconstruir el pensamiento de una poca. Pero, en conjunto, es un procedimiento muy peligroso. Por eso he preferido atenerme a la divisin por bloques de libros. En la primera parte analizaremos los datos de los libros histricos, aunque eso suponga un largo recorrido desde el siglo X a.C. hasta casi la era cristiana. El estudio de los Salmos nos obligar a retroceder a la poca monrquica. Y lo mismo ocurrir al hablar de los profetas. En cambio, el estudio de los Apcrifos y Qumrn se circunscribe a un tiempo ms reducido, el que va desde el siglo III a.C. hasta la cada de Jerusaln (ao 70 d.C.). Al analizar los textos he procurado tener en cuenta su historia posterior. Un texto que originariamente no hablaba del Mesas poda ser aplicado a l siglos ms tarde por grupos de mentalidad mesinica. Esta historia de la interpretacin supone tambin una novedad con respecto a los estudios de Mowinckel y Cazelles. Sin embargo, antes de analizar los textos indico al lector los problemas que se debaten actualmente sobre el mesianismo. La confusin terminolgica que existe, incluso dentro de los estudios bblicos, obliga a aclarar de entrada algunas ideas e indicar en qu lnea me oriento. El estilo de la coleccin en que se inserta esta obra es el de la alta divulgacin. Asequible a cualquier persona interesada en el tema, pero sin abundar en las innumerables cuestiones tcnicas que los textos plantean. Esto me ha obligado a sacrificar una enorme cantidad de notas y a dejar de justificar opciones que pueden parecer discutibles. Slo en poqusimas ocasiones he mantenido algunas citas literales en el texto. Sin embargo, es posible que este libro caiga en manos de profesores o de personas preparadas para profundizar en el tema. Por eso, ofrezco al comienzo una extensa bibliografa (hasta 1993), que completo en cada captulo, actualizndola hasta 2010.
