CHAPTER IV THE RUSULT OF THE RESEARCH

This chapter discusses the results of the action in each cycle. The following description discussed the result of grammar test of the students using grammar translation method. 4.1 The description of Research Setting 4.1.1 The Description of Action in Cycle 1 There were three meetings and one test in the first cycle, the first meeting was held on May 1st 2013 at 10.40 12. 00, the second meeting was held on May 3rd 2013 at 08.40 10.00 and the third meeting on May 8th 2013 at 10.40 12.00. After the meetings have done, the researcher does the grammar test about simple past tense on May 10th 2013. The tests consist of 35 number (see appendix ) Every meeting covered four stages of activities namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. 1. Planning In this step, the researcher design the lesson plan based on the curriculum of second grade students at SMPN 1 Sukosari. In this case, the researcher and the English teacher discussed the suitable material that would be given to the students of VIII/F. The material is about recount text, the researcher identified past tense on the recount text. Then, the researcher and the English teacher discussed when

the research could be started and the research explained about the way to implemented Grammar Translation Method. The English teacher agreed so the researcher can do the research. The researcher prepared the lesson plan for teaching learning process, and the Grammar Translation Method is used to improve the students grammar achievement. There are three meeting in first cycle and each of them was 80 minutes and the test also was 80 minutes. 2. Acting The implementation of the action was based on the lesson plan that have made by researcher. The action was using Grammar translation Method. Based on the time schedule on SMPN 1 Sukosari, the implementation of the action of the first cycle was carried out 1, 3, 8 and 10 May 2013. For the first meeting in cycle 1 on Wednesday, May 1st 2013, the researcher implementing the lesson plan about identifying the past tense and generic structure of recount text. The researcher explains recount text using text with the title A beautiful day at Jogja and then translates the text until the students understood about text. After it, the researcher plains about differences between nominal and verbal verb on the formula of past tense specially about using was / were. The research gave another text, Holiday at Bali and then asked the students to read and translate the few line of the text directly. Then, asking the students to find and correct the mistakes in the sentences. In that situation, the students felt difficult to translate the text but they know about the difference of using was / were well.

In the second meeting on Friday, May 3rd 2013, the material is still about recount text. The researcher explains about the generic structure of recount text and told about the time signal that used in past tense. The researcher asked the students to read about my birthday and translate directly until they know the purpose of the text. Sometimes, the teacher gave the new vocabularies with the meaning in Indonesia and asked the students to memorize them. Then the researcher asked the students to answer the question based on the text. In the second meeting, the students were enthusiastic in memorizing new vocabulary but they still difficult in translating the text. In the third meeting on Wednesday 8th 2013, the researcher tried to explain about the regular / irregular verb. The media was given is letter because it is one of the examples of recount text. The researcher asks the students underline the verbs 2 on the letter and then asked them to find the synonym of the words in the letter that given. In the third meeting was not effective yet because some of the students did not pay attention to the material and busy with themselves. At the end of the lesson, the research give motivation to the students to try hard in studying about the tenses especially about simple past tense because it is very useful to construct the sentence. On the forth meeting on Friday May 10th 2013, the researcher gave the grammar test to measure grammar achievement was improved or not. The test consist of 35 number with the short answer question (see appendix) 3. Observing In doing the research, the researcher collaborate with the teacher to know the intention of the students in joining teaching learning process until they get the

better score in English specially about grammar. Some of the students understand well and have motivation in learning English, rest of them still did not interest with English because think it is difficult to be learn. After observing the test on the first cycle, the researcher conclude that the students still have difficulty in using the simple past tense on the text because they did not know exactly what the simple past tense is. 4. Reflecting The reflecting was done after the result of the test was known. The result of the test is students who get the score 70 were 63%. It means the students still did not achieve the percentage minimum score required in this research, namely 75%. So the action of cycle 2 is needed to be conducted. During the implementation in first cycle, it was found that there were affect the students learning activities in the classroom. Most of them are not interest, still confused and shy to express their idea in answering the question. The students thought English was very complicated material to study. Using Grammar translation Method is still not successful yet in this classroom. Based on the problems above, it is shown that students still did not enjoy in teaching learning process so they did not interest with English. So, on this reflection, the second cycle was conducted by adding the media on the lesson plan to make the students interest in English and then make a quiz before starting the lesson about memorizing the new vocabularies (at least 10 vocabularies) 4.1.2 The Description of Action in Cycle 2 The action of second cycle implemented since the result of the action in first cycle had not achieved the target of the research yet. There were three

meeting on the second cycle. The first meeting was held on may 15th 2013 at 10.40 12.00, the second meeting on May 17th 2013 and the third meeting on May 22nd 2013 at 08.40 10.00. The test of cycle 2 was held on the Wednesday, May 24th 2013. Every meeting covered with four stages of activities, those are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. 1. Planning As the first step in cycle 1, the researcher discussed with the English teacher about the suitable material that would given to the students of VIII/E. The material that still did not explain yet was about narrative text so the researcher can continued to explain about the simple past tense by identifying the narrative text. This material was used to improve students grammar achievement in order to reach the target score, namely 70. 2. Acting The implementation of the action in the cycle 2 was revised based on the problem in cycle 1. The researcher expected adding the media and do the quiz before the teaching learning process can make the students grammar achievement would be better than the result in cycle 1. In the cycle 2, the researcher tried to make the situation more comfortable and interesting in teaching learning process. So the students felt happy in learning English and did not shy to ask and answer the question. For the first meeting on Wednesday, May 15th 2013, the researcher gave the example about narrative text and then explained the form of past tense (the affirmative, negative and interrogatives sentences). The media that used is flashcard. The teacher gave the text about the legend of Banyuwangi and then

discuss together with the students in translating the text. After it, the teacher asked the students to rewrite the sentence that used past tense and the asked them to match the sentences based on the picture on wall of the class. In this meeting, the students have a lot of spirit to match the picture based on the sentence they get. Most of them wanted to try in answering the question because they knew about the picture. In the end, the researcher asked the students to study because there was a quiz about the new vocabularies that was given on the first meeting. In the second meeting on Friday May 17th 2013, the researcher gave the quiz about the vocabularies that learn on the first meeting. After held the quiz, the researcher continued to explain the material about the rules of adding ed on the regular verbs and the generic structure of narrative text. The media that used is puzzle. The researcher gave the text about Cinderella and asked them to complete the text based on the suitable verbs on the bracket. After the text was complete, the researcher asked the students to identify the generic structure of the text and tried to retell the text in Indonesia. After it, the researcher asked the students to complete the puzzle on the whiteboard. Each of students are interest to come forward and fill the puzzle. They were not shy to try and answer the question from the teacher. They thought that learning English was interesting. On the third meeting on Wednesday May 22nd 2013, the researcher gave the result of the vocabularies quiz and then the students happy with their score because they got different quotation motivation to study from the researcher. After it, the quiz 2 was held and the students tried hard to get the better score. O the third meeting, the material is still about narrative text. The researcher explained about the function of past tense in the text and the differences between narrative

and recount text. On the last meeting before test of second cycle, the researcher used spin wheel as a media to flashback the material in the past. The students are comfortable, happy and enthusiastic in teaching English process because they felt that learning English was very fun. They have more spirit that before, they also tried to love English, and be aware that English is very useful for them. In the last meeting on May 24th 2013, the researcher gave the test to the students. The test consist of 35 number with short answer question (see appendix ) 3. Observing The indicator of observing in the cycle 2 is same with the cycle 1. The researcher collaborates with the teacher to know the intention of the students in joining teaching learning process. Most of the students have motivation in learning English because the researcher adding the media in implementing the Grammar Translation Method and did the quiz to support them in memorizing the new vocabularies. After observing the test on the second cycle, the researcher conclude that the students know exactly what the simple past tense is, about the rules, the differences between using was/were and regular or irregular verb because they were fun learning so they can memorizing them well. 4. Reflecting Based on the class observation, most of the students had involved in teaching learning process. The students wanted to ask without any doubt and felt shy and they had enjoyable learning so they have a great motivation in learning English. They can analyze the simple past tense on the narrative text well; they know the using of regular or irregular verbs and how to put them on the sentences. It is shown on the result of the second cycle. The result was 77% of the students

who achieved the target score. It means that the students grammar achievement was increased from 63% in cycle 1 to 77% in cycle 2. So, it concludes that teaching English using Grammar Translation Method can improve the students grammar achievement. The most important thing that should be point out was using GTM need to be collaborating with the adding of media and needed the quiz to support the students to study specially in memorizing the new vocabularies on the passage. After they know the new vocabularies, easy for them to translate the text and making the learning was enjoyable can help them to reduce their shy so they wanted to answer the question from the teacher with the big spirit. 4.2 The result of the research 4.2.1 The Result of Grammar Achievement Test of Cycle 1 The researcher determines the items of evaluation that is about the test that get of each cycle. The items of evaluation are made based on the curriculum of SMPN 1 Sukosari. The test of the first cycle on May 10th 2013 at Friday 08.40 10.00 was conducted to measure the students grammar achievement especially about the simple past tense. There were 22 students who got 70 in grammar achievement and the result will be presented in appendix Table 1 The result of the grammar test of first cycle SCORE 70 70 TOTAL TOTAL 22 13 35 PERCENT ( % ) 63 % 37% 100%

Based on the result of grammar test, it was found that the percentages of the students grammar achievement using GTM I cycle 1 was 63%. As mentioned before, the cycle was considered to be successful if the students grammar achievement had reached 70 or more and it was achieved by at least 75% . It means that the target score of students grammar achievement is still not achieved yet. 4.2.2 The Reflection of the First Cycle The reflection was done after the researcher known the result of the test in the cycle 1. Based on the observation, it was found that 37% of the students who did not achieve the target score. It means that they do not well respond to the implementation of GTM so the target score was not fulfilled yet. As stated before that the research will be successful if the percentage of the students who achieved the score 70 was 75%, the result of the first cycle was only 63%. The target score was not achieved yet because some reasons. After the researcher observed the score, it is shown that the students did not understand the form of simple past tense in the sentences well. They did not have motivation in learning English so they did not paid attention when the teacher explaining the material. They also were unconfident and afraid to make a mistake when they answer the question in the classroom. So the researcher must be revised the lesson plan and the action of the second cycle needed to be improved. 4.2.3 The Result of Grammar achievement in Cycle 2 After collaborate GTM with the suitable media in teaching English process and the quiz of vocabularies before starting the lesson, the researcher was held the

test of second cycle to know the score had been increased or not. The test was held on May 24th 2013. The test consists of 35 numbers with short answer question about identifying the simple past tense. Based on the result of the test, the researcher found 27 of the students with score 70 in grammar test (see appendix ) Table 2 The Result of Grammar Test in Cycle 2 SCORE 70 70 TOTAL TOTAL 27 8 35 PERCENT (%) 77 % 23 % 100 %

Based on the result of grammar test, it was found that the percentage score of the students grammar using GTM in cycle 2 who got 70 was 77%. It means that the target percentage requirement in this research already achieved. 4.2.4 The Reflection Result of Cycle 2 The reflection in cycle 2 was done after the result of the test was known. From the result of grammar test, the score showed improvement. There were 27 students who get the target score or more, it means that 77% of the students achieved the target score so the standard requirement of the target score has already achieved. The action of the second cycle can be stopped. In conclusion, using Grammar Translation Method can improve the students grammar achievement of the eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Sukosari, it is underlining about the using of media also affect the students motivation in learning English. So it is also depend on the teacher creativity in designing the lesson plan. Beside,

the quiz also needed to support the students studied in memorizing the new vocabularies in order to help them translate the text.
