SHORT TERM PROJECTS

Some short term projects were a result of UHHs presence in Rosita, Nicaragua. Early mission team members provided education and backpacks filled with supplies to midwives (a request from the local health community as midwives deliver the majority of babies born in the rural areas). Gail Tomkowiak procured and organized the material to be put in the backpacks. In another request, a rural health leader was funded to administer local health programs. A beekeeping education program and a domestic violence education program were funded by a grant from the Sofia Foundation. Arely Garcia, a Rosita resident, was hired by UHH and Holy Family Parish to oversee these projects. Also her role has been to administer the Clay Pot Project, chair the Agriculture Committee, assist with the organization of medical clinics and Holy Family mission groups, and be a general liaison between Rosita and Fond du Lac. Most valuable to UHH for his language skills and cultural knowledge is FlavioAraa, a native Nicaraguan residing in Fond du Lac, who has assisted and participated in all medical missions.
