7th GRADE REQUIRED QUARTER HEALTH COURSE Content Outline


Personal Health (2-3 weeks = 10-15 hours) Acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health Personal health habits and effects on body systems 1. Understand immediate and long-term effects of health habits 2. Recognize personal strengths and setting goals for improvement 3. Practice personal hygiene Variation of body types 1. Recognize and seek appropriate help with problems with body image 2. Understand risks of dieting and eating disorders Physical activity and contribution to physical, mental, emotional, social health Emotional development during adolescence 1. Manage mood swings 2. Prevent depression 3. Reduce stress 4. Recognize when emotional issues require outside help Nutrition 1. Understand that variety and quantity of food influence growth and development 2. Explore the variety of healthy food choices available in all cultures 3. Develop personal health plan that includes fitness, nutrition, and stress

Community Health (2-3 weeks = 10-15 hours) Respect for and promotion of the health of others Positive Peer Relationships 1. Interact effectively with people of different gender, ethnicity, culture, and orientation 2. Use appropriate ways to make friends, gain attention, express feelings 3. Prevent harassment 4. Resolve conflict positively 5. Know when to seek adult help 6. Promote positive health behaviors among peers Family Living 1. Change roles and responsibilities 2. Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (2 weeks = 10 hours) Acceptance of personal responsibility for life-long health Short-term and long-term effects of substance use 1. Have knowledge of physiological effects of various substances 2. Understand that use of substances frequently plays a role in dangerous behaviors 3. Investigate the effects of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs on the health of an unborn child Influence and peer pressures 1. Develop interpersonal skills such as assertiveness, refusal and decision-making to avoid use of dangerous substances 2. Identifying ways to obtain help to resist pressure to use drugs 3. Identifying and participating in positive alternative activities

Safety (1 week = 5 hours) Acceptance of personal responsibility for life-long health. Informed use of health-related information, products, and services Violence prevention 1. Demonstrate positive, constructive ways to resolve conflicts and resist negative peer pressure and violence 2. Have knowledge of gang issues 3. Have knowledge of ways to avoid situations that increase risk of abuse Injury prevention 1. Avoid unsafe activities even when pressured by peers 2. Practice safe behavior in various environments 3. Explain the need for protective equipment in sports and physical activity Disease prevention 1. Understand that positive health practices influence risk and severity of disease 2.
