FROM THE EDITOR

The summer 2013 has been punishing. Critics say we are destroying the planet and we are unable to marshal arguments to counter their convictions. Efforts for sustainable growth and protection of environment proved to be mere empty rhetoric. Sleaze, lies and corruption are eating the entrails of the Society and the Nation. My gratitude to Er Suhair and Er KNC cannot be expressed in words. Without their contribution the June issue would not have materialized. The one day family picnic at Kannur was a good effort to salvage one of the noble objectives of forming our Forum i.e. PROVIDING COMPANIONSHIP.

SMILE AND LAUGHTER

The information superhighway of the human brain is a tangled mass of millions of nerve cells connected by a complex system of network, governed by an array of powerful chemicals called neuro-transmitters. During periods of acute stress one class of such hormone catecholamine boosts up our blood pressure and heart beat, making us ready to fight or run away. This system was intended for use only as an emergency measure, like confronting an attacking predator. But todays modern man is under acute stress 24x7. The predator too has changed its profile. Parents are threatened over the scholastic levels of their children: children, in turn are stressed out by the daily grind of round the clock tuition. The master of the house is worried about his job and his wife, about the outlaws on the street corner, and the in laws at home. Chronic stress results in persistent elevation of stress hormones, damaging the system. What was supposed to be a fire engine, to be used only in an emergency, is now put into service as an every day commuter bus! High blood pressure, loss of sleep, fatigue, palpitation..the effects are endless. The brain has a neuro- transmitter called serotonin, the happy hormone. The higher its level, the happier you are. Most anti-depressant drugs used for pathologically depressed patients act by boosting the blood levels of serotonin by altering their metabolism. Smile and laughter are expressions of happiness. Smile is soft, docile and quiet. Laughter is energetic, audible and extrovert. The quiet charm of smile is to be noticed; the vocal behavior of laughter would turn heads. Laughter is infectious. Comedians exploit this by starting off laughing after their humor and in time, the entire audience breaks down laughing. Laughing has been shown to relieve stress because, during and immediately after a hearty laugh, the human system can not feel sad or morose. A good laugh alters favorably the brain neuro-transmitters. Reduction of catecholamine, increase in serotonin and increase in endorphin follow. Endolphins are a group of hormones that modulate response to pain, similar in structure to morphine, -the most powerful analgesic known to man. Improvement of social bonding, reduction of blood pressure and increase in immunity to infections are some of the broad-spectrum benefits credited to a hearty laugh. Let us start celebrating with a smile and break into a laughter-every day of every month for one year, and then every year the rest of our lives. A family that laughs together stays together. While smile opens the door, laughter would hug you. -Dr Tiny Nair (Hindu) Good Qualities We asked prospective job applicants at our business to fill out a questionnaire. World Environment Day aims to reduce food waste

Think. Eat. Save. Reduce your foodprint.

Think. Eat. Save. Reduce your foodprint. That's the theme of World Environment Day 2013, to be celebrated on the 5th of June in Mongolia. The new food-inspired global campaign focuses on the fact that over one billion tons of food are lost or wasted each year, according to UNEP.The campaign, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and others, aims to reduce food loss along the entire chain of food production and consumption and specifically targets food wasted by consumers, retailers and the hospitality industry. "In a world of seven billion people, set to grow to nine billion by 2050, wasting food makes no sense economically, environmentally and ethically," said UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

Appreciate and improve relationships

One wife waited patiently, then impatiently, for her husband to repair the lawn mower as he had promised. One day, not wanting to confront him in anger, she tried another trick. That was the day he came home and found her seated on the ground snipping grass with sewing scissors, one blade at a time. He watched in absolute amazement. Then he went into the house and returned with a toothbrush. "Honey," he said, "when you finish cutting the grass would you mind sweeping the sidewalks?"They both laughed. And, more importantly, he turned his attention to the mower. We've all been there. We want to encourage a child to do her homework, or a spouse to complete a project, or a colleague to follow through. How can we encourage without criticizing, nagging, berating or pushing? Even if motivating is not your purpose, respect and appreciation, topped off with a little humour is bound to improve any relationship

Where there is a will..

As the alarm goes off at 4am, N Shiva Kumar is up on his feet, stacking his bicycle with newspapers. He has to deliver them before the sun appears on the horizon. A habit since Class 6, Shiva's life is set to change now. Come June 16, this newspaper-boy-turned-vendor will walk down the corridors of the Indian Institute of ManagementCalcutta as a PGP student. It sounds like a fairy tale, but the TOI vendor who cracked CAT 2012 has indeed grabbed a seat in the premier business school. Shiva, 23, an engineering student from Banaswadi, is the son of an illiterate mother and a father who was a truck driver. He started working as a newspaper delivery boy and for his debt-ridden family of four the Rs 150 he would bring home was a huge relief. "Every morning people would come home asking my father to return the money he had borrowed. My father had a truck. But there were more liabilities than what he could earn with it. When I was in Class 3 or 4, I sold flowers that my mother strung into garlands by the roadside. It was only later that I found the job of newspaper boy," said the 8th semester computer science student of Bangalore Institute of Technology. Shiva managed the part-time job along with school. "I was studying in an ICSE school. In Class 9, I was asked not to come to school till I paid the fees. The next day, I approached the first customer I was delivering the paper to, Krishna Veda Vyasa, and requested him to fund me. He hesitated, and said he didn't even know me. I asked him to do a background check, and he found I was the topper there. I requested him to pay one term's fee, but he paid for the entire year. He continued funding me ever since. I owe it all to him," he said. He soon found an opportunity to be a vendor and started his own agency when in Class 10. "I'd learnt the tricks of the trade by then. My vendor had some 50 extra copies to sell and I took them from him. That's how I started," he said. The 50 copies have now grown to 500. "After school, I would take my cycle and identify new buildings and residents. I would approach them for business and ensured the papers reached before 6am. I had my own targets for a month," he explained his marketing tactics. He still delivers the paper along with four of his delivery boys. "It was hard work. I had to get up at 4am every day, deliver the papers and head to school. I had to skip breakfast to be on time, but would still be late. In college, I opted to sit in the last bench during the first hour so I could catch up on some sleep." IIM could not have rejected a seat for an aspirant like him. "After my family stabilizes, I want to start a charitable institution, Educate India, by which I can help the underprivileged gain some education. I could achieve this because someone helped me. In turn, I want to help at least 10 people," he said. Shiva is taking an education loan to fund his IIM course. At IIM-C, he plans to "work extremely hard" while he specializes in finance. It's an attitude that has already made a mark on teachers and faculty members at his new school. "We are really impressed with the boy. He will certainly serve as an example to others and we will look forward to teaching him," said Subir Bhattacharya, chairman of IIM-C's post graduate programmes. (Times of India May 5, 2013) suhair

Kindness Always Pays

Many years ago, one stormy night, an elderly man and his wife entered the lobby of a small hotel in Philadelphia, USA. Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get some shelter for the night. Could you possibly give us a room here? the husband asked. The clerk, a friendly man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conventions in town. All of our rooms are taken, the clerk said. But I cant send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one oclock in the morning. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? Its not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you folks comfortable for the night. When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. Dont worry about me, Ill make out just fine, the clerk told them. So the couple agreed. As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel. Maybe someday Ill build one for you.

TOP

The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isnt easy. Two years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten the incident when he received a letter from the old man. It recalled that stormy night and enclosed a round-trip ticket to New York, asking the young man to pay them a visit. The old man met him in New York, and led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. He then pointed to a great new building there, a pale reddish stone, with turrets and watchtowers thrusting up to the sky. That, said the older man, is the hotel I have just built for you to manage. You must be joking. the young man said. I can assure you I am not. said the older man, a sly smile playing around his mouth. The older mans name was William Waldorf-Aster, and that magnificent structure was the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The young clerk who became its first manager was George C. Boldt. This young clerk never foresaw the turn of events that would lead him to become the manager of one of the worlds most glamorous hotels. Suhair

WIDENING THE NET

Our homes are packed with electrical and electronic appliances and all of them do exactly what they are designed for. The AC cools the air temperature and lowers the humidity; the washing machine starts when we press the start button; the fridge works quietly 24X7 to keep our food fresh. To do all these things India has installed 211GW of electricity. India is the fifth largest producer of electricity. 400 million Indians have still no access to electricity. The supply is poor quality and erratic for those who have access. Demand is more in daytime; it ebbs at night. Producers overbuild capacity to meet peak demand. The shortage in October 2012 was 9.1%. The demand is increasing steadily. Experts predict that Indias demand for power will double by 2035. We incur more cost to make peak power available; it will not be long before our consumption overshoot what the planet can support / sustain. Everything must get smarter. Smarter appliances, smarter homes and smarter cars, and yessmarter cities! Everything will be networked; there will be sharing of information with service providers. At home the washing machine, fridge and AC will communicate among themselves, as well as the supplier and operate as per the priorities decided by the owner and comply with the restrictions imposed by the supplier. Optimising energy use and reducing the peak demand can be inbuilt in suitable programmes. The washing cycle can wait till the AC and the fridge have ceased drawing power on attaining preset temperature and humidity. Utility will benefit from optimization and lower maximum demand; the consumer will achieve lower energy costs. Utility can allot different time slots for various appliances and equipments to match with the availability of Power. Bills will shrink and further rise in CO2 emissions arrested. This is not science fiction; it is not yet a commercial reality. But the essential key technologies do exist.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

All the forty six travelers except four had crossed the midlife mark. The Senior Engineers Forum and the tenure in KSEB bonded them together. 15th May: at 11 am the sun was scorching above. The people operating passenger boat were all smiles probably imagining; These fellows are crazy. There were 31 members; eleven spouses who came along; the four adolescents completed the tally. Their destination was a much-hyped tourist attraction - the Dharmadam Island near Thalassery. They call it k\ fOqOV, an appellation justifying its looks. The 5 acre island covered with coconut palms and dense thorny bushes is largely inaccessible. During low tide travelers can walk to the island wading in knee-deep water; that option had passed a few hours ago. A boat owner volunteered to ferry us across and back. Our spirits were low when we found that there was no wharf and getting in the boat, without any moorings, swayed by powerful wind and was going to be tricky. We were literally lifted and hauled over the sill to inside the boat by friendly hands pushing and pulling. Words of encouragement and assurance by the boat owner and operators hardly dispelled our fears when the ominous tides and strong wind caused the boat to wobble precariously. Yet the adventure was thrilling. There were plenty of occasions when mutual help and succor were demonstrated. The strong bonds of companionship were clearly in evidence. Thalassery is famous for many reasons. It is often called the city of "three C's" in the state Cricket, Cake and Circus. It is the place were the British first played cricket, the first cakes introduced by the British were baked here in the Mambally's Royal Biscuit Factory and Indian Circus had its origins in this town as well. Dharmadom Island is one km away from the mainland at Dharmadom beach with cliffs falling out to the Arabian Sea. After lunch at Dharmadam we proceeded to visit Mahe and Muzhappilangad. The picturesque little town with a French flavour, originally called Mayyazhi, was renamed Mahe after the Frenchman who captured it. The St. Teresa's Church is famed for the efficacy of prayers and offerings. People of all religions converge here from all over Kerala during the festival (October 5 - 22). Malayalakalagramam, a renowned Centre for Arts and Culture at New Mahe conduct courses in Painting, Sculpture, Music, Dance and Pottery. It is looked after by M.V.Devan, the celebrated doyen of Fine Arts, who hails from Chokli the adjacent village.

Dr. Herman Gundert, the revered German missionary, scholar and lexicographer prepared the first Malayalam dictionary. He lived here from 1839-1859. He also published the first Malayalam newspaper Paschimodayam. A majestic sculpture overlooks the Stadium. The drive-in beach and shallow waters of Muzhappilangad is a paradise for swimmers. The 4.5 km long beach is sheltered by black boulders. Festivals are always crowd pullers here. Adventure sports like sailing, gliding, by experts from Defence services and Aquatic sports are frequently arranged to entertain tourists. When quizzed by Sasi for feedback, the travel-weary seniors unanimously acknowledged the impeccable efforts of Ers Mohanan Nambiar, Divakaran and Gangadharan in making the one day picnic unforgettable. Er T.C.Govindan rendered golden melodies and Smt Mallika Soman sang an entire canto from Narayaneeyam, the epic Sanskrit verse in praise of Lord Guruvayurappan, in her inimitable style. Both singers helped to elevate the mood and refresh the spirits. Nayanar

How to Ruin an Interview When youre interviewing for a job, you want to make an impression. Hiring managers report that these people made onejust not the right kind: Applicant hugged hiring manager at the end of the interview. Applicant ate all the candy from the candy bowl while trying to answer questions. Applicant blew her nose and lined up the used tissues on the table in front of her. Applicant wore a hat that said "Take this job and shove it." Applicant talked about how an affair cost him a previous job. Applicant threw his beer can in the outside trash can before coming into the reception area. Applicants friend came in and asked, "How much longer?"

Meeting Time Meetingboy.com invites viewers to gripe about their jobs. Some of the best responses: "No, I wasnt playing devils advocate. I really think your idea is stupid." "Getting an excellent performance review but then no raise is like being told you get dessert, then learning the dessert is celery." "Of course it wasnt convincing. That 60-slide PowerPoint presentation wasnt to convince people. It was to break their will." "You had me at meeting canceled." (ReadersDigest)

FOOD SECURITY
The Green revolution we witnessed in the 1960s helped India to achieve self-sufficiency and avoid food shortage. Yet the issue of food security continues to pose uncomfortable questions even today. Weather pattern is transforming; production levels are low; population is growing, land under cultivation is decreasing. Requirement of food grains by 2030 could well be over 300 MT. The main resources - land, water and manpower- are limited. What holds promise is adoption of Precision Farming. The objectives are: a) Reduce cost of cultivation, b) use inputs best suited to production and c) optimize outputs for stable and safe supply of food. It also has to maximize financial return, reduce waste and be environment-friendly. This is possible with the help of new technology. Deployment of IT tools like micro-computers, GIS, GPS, decision support system and automatic control of farm machinery can very well be the agricultural system of the 21st century. It involves a synergistic approach using traditional knowledge and information along with management-intensive technologies. In this holistic farm management farmers can adjust input use and cultivation methods pertaining to seed, fertilizer, pesticide, water management, choice of tillage, planting and harvesting matching with soil, crop and other land characteristics. There will be mapping and analysis of variables, spatial relationships of management actions. Precision farming provides a framework of information with which the farmer can participate in both production and management decisions. Potential benefits include profitability, sustainability, crop quality, environmental protection, online quality of life, food safety and most importantly rural economic development.

Ethernet turns 40 years old

From local area to worldwide deployment
By Lawrence Latif

FOUR DECADES AGO the Ethernet protocol made its debut as a way to connect machines in close proximity, today it is the networking layer two protocol of choice for local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and everything in between. For many people Ethernet is merely the RJ45 jack on the back of a laptop, but its relative ubiquity and simplicity belie what Ethernet has done for the networking industry and in turn for consumers and enterprises. Ethernet has in the space of 40 years gone from a technology that many in the industry viewed as something not fit for high bandwidth, dependable communications to the default data link protocol. Ethernet for the first two decades was deployed widely in LANs, competing and winning against Token Ring networks and various other more exotic and costly technologies.
TOP 9

What Ethernet had going for it was the relatively low cost of network interface cards (NICs) and switching equipment, as well as the fact that its adaptive data link protocol that tolerated ad hoc LAN segment configuration and device connections and disconnections made it far easier and less expensive to implement and maintain. While IBM's Token Ring technology had both the brand name and the bandwidth to match Ethernet, a standard that had been ratified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as 802.3, its switch gear equipment, physical wire and network engineering overhead were significantly more expensive, making Ethernet based LANs more attractive. Now Ethernet sockets and network interface circuitry can be found on most laptops and desktop motherboards, but back in the 1990s hardware vendors would sell separate network interface cards (NICs) that supported 10BASE-T, a standard that provided 10Mbit/s over twisted copper pairs. Eventually the IEEE ratified what would be commonly known as 100BASE-T, resulting in 100Mbit/s bandwidth over copper and today it is common to find 1000BASE-T, or gigabit Ethernet, supported by most NICs. Ethernet's deployment over copper is arguably what made it as successful as it is today. Even when the IEEE ratified the 802.3 standard, by which time Ethernet was 10 years old, it still used coaxial cable as the physical cable, but copper twisted pair wires - effectively the same cabling used in the telephone system - were found to work just as well, offering simplicity and once again lower cost. Now Ethernet is deployed not just over copper wires, usually labeled as unshielded twisted pair (UTP), but fibre optic cables. Ethernet over fibre optic cables is usually first to see bandwidth increases and offers greater range, especially when deployed in single mode. But Ethernet's biggest accomplishment is away from the LAN and in the telecoms industry that in the past used protocols such as synchronous data hierarchy (SDH) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). Ethernet was initially viewed as an unreliable technology but has now matured into one to which transit providers can attach service level agreements (SLAs). People associated it with a being a LAN technology so they weren't confident it was robust in the WAN. But now it has gained a lot more acceptance and people are seeing you have same types of SLA in terms of guarantees of availability, uptime, time to repair just like you have with traditional technologies so there is no difference. People now have a level of confidence that [Ethernet] has been engineered as a WAN technology." As enterprises already had knowledge of deploying and managing Ethernet within LAN environments, deploying Ethernet over WANs such as point-to-point links between offices or over the internet was a logical step. While firms can still pick up SDH or ATM links, it is unlikely that telecoms operators such as BT are seeing very much demand from enterprises, especially given the choice of providers in the market for internet protocol (IP) transit over Ethernet. Ethernet might be a 40 year old technology, but thanks to the IEEE's relentless push to increase bandwidth and transit providers' ability to attach reliability guarantees, it means there is a good chance that Ethernet will not only reach its half century with ease but continue to be widely deployed even 20 years or more from now. There are very few technologies in use today that can lay claim to being 40 years old and still on the cutting edge, but Ethernet can.

TIPS ON INVESTMENTS IN SHARES-CXX

The market rally that commenced in April 2013 continued with more vigor in May. The sensex rose from 19736 on 1st May to a 30 month high of 20286 on 17th. The rally is due to various positive factors affecting the markets. A three year low inflation rate of 4.89 achieved for April is the major factor. The low inflation rate enhances the hope of the market players that the RBI will reduce interest rates during its policy announcement in June. Lower interest rates will cause the manufacturing units to get cheaper loans for their day to day activities. Another factor was the strong performance of almost all global indices such as Nikkei, Dow Jones, Nasdaq etc. FIIs continued to be net buyers during May is also a major factor. After reaching a 30 month high of 20286 the markets went for a correction phase from th 20 to 23rd May. From 24th again the indices began their upward journey. The markets shows strength and the sensex may move on to 20443, 20665 or 20935 in the weeks ahead. The short term trend will reverse only on a close below 19576. The medium term trend is not under threat as long as the index remains above 18000. Movement between 18000 and 21000 can be thought of, as a base building effort by the index and positive from a long term perspective. The Nifty similarly followed the sensex in the month of May. It declined to an important short term support at 5941during the last week. The short term trend continues to be up. The next targets for Nifty are 6230, 6338 or even 6400 in the coming weeks. As long as the Nifty remains above 5763 there is no threat for the short term trend. The medium trend in Nifty continues to be up. A sideways movement between 5500 and 6300 for a few months can be construed as positive from a long term perspective. Only a close below 5330 will cause the long term outlook negative. The global cues are also positive in that all major indices are on an uptrend. The low crude oil prices also are seen advantageous to the markets. What a retail investor shall do in such a positive scenario? Since the market is on an uptrend it is not advisable to buy shares at these high prices. So one should patiently, wait for corrections, for making investment. To reduce risk, purchase should be done in small lots only. However, this is the best time to book profit, if the targeted level of profit is reached. One should not hesitate to book profit in the hope that the markets will rise further. It may result in losses.
Wishing a very profitable period for all investors
