The Journey To Better Education Provision Worldwide

The team of experienced educators from GEMS took an objective look at our school environment and academic program and made practical recommendations for improvement. They came in with no agenda and no affiliations to any local parties. Their point of view was strictly that of educators who have walked in our shoes and can offer real insight into how we can better serve our students.
Dr. Valerie Thomas, Principal, Monroe High School, Albany, Georgia

Foreword by the Founder and Chairman

No country will prosper in the 21st century without great schools. GEMS is in the business of building and managing great schools. It is one of the few genuinely international school operators and its quality is excellent. It has a huge amount to offer any partner or government striving for a world class education system.
The Rt Hon Lord Adonis

Like you, I believe that every child matters. That so many children around the world still lack the access to a decent education is intolerable. Providing children with an exemplary education is not a matter of processing forms through the same educational template. Nor can we tackle the problems governments face all around the world if we do not address their individual needs and understand where they are in their journey to deliver better quality education. We know what is involved because we have been running a successful education company for over 50 years. We have advised governments, corporations, schools and parents on delivering the high quality education that is right for them. GEMS Education Solutions is a specialist education consultancy providing strategy, consulting and programme implementation across the education sector. As part of GEMS Education, GEMS Education Solutions draws upon the resources of the groups global school network and educational expertise. Demand for our services is high in India, East Asia and Africa, as well as in the USA, UK and Eastern Europe. Governments want to raise standards of education but cannot move fast enough to meet demand. This is where we can help. The challenge can only be met by creating an environment in which private and public sectors work in partnership.

GEMS uniquely enables parents to choose a school and curriculum suited to their personal needs. More than 99% of students at our private schools with the lowest fees have gone to university. These are schools where the annual tuition fee is $1500. The results speak for themselves. GEMS students have gone to a dozen of the top 15 universities in the world and 36 of the top 50 universities in the United States. We believe that a quality education is about Ad Vitam Paramus preparing for life. The GEMS approach to learning is one which focuses not only on academic excellence but also on helping students develop their character, values, personal leadership and the spirit of enterprise necessary for them achieve their full potential as global citizens. GEMS values-driven education is expressed through our four core values which are woven into every curriculum offered by GEMS schools and are at the core of our DNA: World Citizenship Empowering students with a global and local perspective Universal Values Accepting that we are all different, recognising that we are all the same Leadership Developing each students individuality and entrepreneurial spirit to discover their potential

Forward Thinking Our educational programmes help students to become flexible thinkers able to question existing thinking, adapt and meet the demands of the future Through GEMS four core values GEMS schools are heavily focused on philanthropy. Each school has their own charitable activities that fall under the Varkey GEMS Foundation. 100 underprivileged children will benefit for every student enrolled at a GEMS school. We are honoured to have former U.S. President Bill Clinton as the honorary Chair of the Varkey GEMS Foundation. GEMS started as a small family run business. We are now a multinational company with global reach and reputation but our approach is based on the simple principle of providing access for all young people to better schooling. GEMS Education is about making education accessible to communities around the world. Thats why we are different.

Preface by the Chief Executive Officer

GEMS Education Solutions takes the learning and benefits of 50 years of experience in providing high quality school management and professional development to partner with governments to achieve transformation across school and tertiary sectors. Our winning formula utilises our global network of schools, worldrenowned educators and advisors in order to develop tailor-made local solutions for each of our clients. We are an official partner of UNESCO and work strategically with governments around the world. Our team members have excelled in education reform, curriculum development,

teaching and learning practices, programme design and evaluation. There are other consultancy companies who can advise on what to do but they lack the delivery experience to know how it should be done. And there are delivery organisations who know what to do but they miss the bigger picture. And then there is GEMS Education Solutions. Not only do we have deep strategic capability but we also run high quality schools. As a result, we forge the powerful link between strategy and implementation. This embeds and sustains the necessary

transformation to raise standards and extend high quality teaching and learning across a region. The GEMS difference means that national strategy, school organisation, teacher training, leadership and management and student achievement are aligned and that the system performs to optimal effect both educationally and financially.

Chris Kirk Chief Executive Officer

Our Approach

CLIEN

T CAR

GEMS Education Solutions supports the improvement of educational standards and expertise in public and private education across the globe. We believe there is no one size fits all model for our clients needs but what is constant is our success rate. An effective school focuses on the optimisation of two closely linked outcomes, student success and financial performance. To deliver results, we use our experience and capacity from running highly successful schools in 11 countries which is underpinned by treating our parents and students as valued customers. International research shows that chains of schools can improve more rapidly and sustainably than single schools acting alone. Working with GEMS offers access to one of the worlds longest established school groups. Our network of schools enables us to achieve results for our clients by focusing on three essential aspects educational excellence, operational excellence, and client/customer care:

An effective school focuses on the optimisation of two closely linked outcomes student outcomes and financial performance. To deliver these outcomes we leverage the experience and capacity from running highly successful schools in 11 countries, covering three important perspectives.

Educational Excellence Ensuring high quality educational delivery to maximise student outcomes.

Student Outcomes Learners who are equipped for life and ready for higher education, armed with knowledge, skills, understanding, qualifications and character, so that they can make the most of all their talents.

Educational excellence

We maintain an edge for our schools and our clients through our Innovation Themes which range from Vocational Skills and Entrepreneurship to Parental Engagement and Leadership. For each theme, a group of our schools is connected with an eminent advisor who helps them take their practice to the next level. These developments are fed back into our knowledge centre so that we can support our schools and our clients.

Operational excellence

Our size and experience allows us to provide excellent services which combine the best of business practices with a deep-rooted understanding of education. This means that all of our services, from HR to finance to school design and build, are highly efficient as well as highly effective.

Client and customer care

We have always regarded our pupils and our parents as our customers and see it as our duty to provide the best for them. This culture flows through to the work we do for governments and for other groups of schools. We know that sometimes the school day stretches far beyond normal school hours so we provide invaluable round the clock service. We have offices all around the world and each of our customers has a dedicated account manager who is available for faceto-face meetings whenever support is needed. They can also always be contacted by phone or email.

Financial Performance Operational Excellence Establishing standards and processes to ensure strong business performance. A school that is delivering value for money through strong enrolment, student retention and sound operational management. Client Care A strong focus on adding value to the whole school community, embedded throughout our services.

Reading about this GEMS programme one sees a miracle. It has expanded to be a real global institution offering education in all parts of the world.

The Issues We Tackle

EQUA LITY

Governments want to raise standards of education but many in the developing world cannot move fast enough to meet demand of a booming and undereducated global population. Whilst in the developed world there is an anxiety over global competitiveness and the changing role of education in society. This is where we can help as education experts. The challenge can only be met by creating an environment in which private and public sectors work in partnership. Delivering excellent educational outcomes requires a clear understanding of the unique educational challenges in each case. Some education problems prove persistent and cross-cultural while some are specific to a district, municipality or country. Some of the problems our clients face include:

Access & Equality

Where an educational system is emerging, a structural overhaul is required to ensure that every child is given access to education regardless of gender, religion, race or creed.

Around 67 million children do not have access to primary school education and another 72 million miss out on secondary school education (ProLiteracy). About 17% of the worlds adults 796 million people still lack basic literacy skills. UNESCO (2011) Students assigned to high value-added teachers are more likely to go to college, earn higher incomes, and less likely to be teenage mothers. On average, having such a teacher for one year raises a childs cumulative lifetime income by $50,000 (equivalent to $9,000 in present value at age 12 with a 5% interest rate). (Harvard University Study 2012)

In countries with varying degrees of socioeconomic wealth, the goal for government is to prioritise spend. It is also essential to ensure resources are distributed fairly for students and within communities, treating rich and poor proportionately to their needs, checking that rural schools as well as urban schools receive appropriate resources. Research has indicated that investing in education is good

We have spent 50 years establishing an approach to running highly successful schools by focusing the framework for school effectiveness - educational excellence operational effectiveness and client and customer care. This approach enables us to produce solutions based on the key component of knowing what works and transposing it to meet your specific needs. We undergo a strategic review of your current educational system to help you to implement the improvements you desire supported by our best practice principles to increasing student success.

UNESCO and GEMS Education Solutions work as a strategic partners directly with Education Ministers around the world to improve public education systems throughout the reform journey.

Selecting the right approach

We find that for every improvement programme the balance between the bottom up approach - building involvement but risking wide variations in interpretation and top down - leading to more control by the primary stakeholders but risking disengagement throughout the organisation - needs to be finely judged. We help you develop an approach to implementing reforms which will fit with your organisations culture as well as allow you to achieve your strategic goals.

Too often an idea which seems great in the Principal or Ministers office, or the District workshop, fails to be implemented successfully. This is often because the people most responsible for delivery were not involved. Engaging teachers, parents and pupils in designing and supporting the changes required is crucial to this process.

Sustainable change requires strong and committed leadership which will advocate for change in bad times as well as good. Just as important is the ability to ensure local capacity is developed, rather than drained, by the change. This is why we use approaches such as train-the-trainer which empower individuals on site.

School Improvement and School Turnaround

Every school has the potential to be a great school. Thats the premise of GEMS Education Solutions Turnaround/Restart Model which we have pioneered in the US. We know from experience that every school, regardless of performance level, has assets that can be developed and built upon to achieve significant improvements in student learning and school performance. GEMS Education Solutions is committed to helping you develop a high-performing school culture, one characterised by: Effective leadership Rigorous curriculum Student-centred teaching and learning Meaningful partnerships with parents and families Professional development that results in increased student achievement

School Turnaround Case Study: Warren Harding High School, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA
Through a partnership with GEMS, Warren Harding High School has made significant strides in key areas. Key initiatives were implemented that transformed the schools learning environment, the cornerstone of the inaugural year of Hardings comprehensive improvement plan. The positive school climate and its emphasis on high student expectations, coupled with new teaching strategies and practices introduced through intensive staff training, sets the stage for the curricular/instructional focus of the plans remaining phases. The attendance rate improved dramatically, a direct result of

several measures put into place. The 2010-2011 school year ended with an overall attendance rate

At GEMS Education, we believe that parents are the key to releasing the potential of their children. Growing research shows that established parent engagement in schools is correlated with scholastic achievement, social development and the development of transferable life skills. For the US market, GEMS Education Solutions has developed the Parent Engagement and Partnership Program (PEPP) which is a tailored framework that supports schools to increase the ambition, access and achievement of high need students through improving the quality of parent engagement

Little GEMS International

Distance Learning

International research demonstrates that investment in early years yields major long term social and economic growth. Developed by a world renowned early years specialist, Little GEMS International is a bespoke programme for children aged 0-5 that looks at the brain and stem systems to develop a curriculum that enhances cognitive development through movement, music, world languages and digital learning, giving children a head start in life. LGI methodology draws upon a range of research and practice including the High Scope Pre-School study which analysed the effect of a highquality, active learning programme for 3- and 4-year-olds. At age 27, the program group had significantly higher monthly earnings, higher percentages of home ownership, higher levels of schooling completed and significantly fewer arrests. The LGI approach establishes a warm, caring and structured environment that provides everything a child needs food, protection, support, love, care, encouragement, challenge, engagement, discipline and learning. LGIs specially designed curriculum and bespoke programmes offer high quality education which benefit the childs all round development and learning. These foundations have a lifelong effect. Research indicates that consistency and security of attachment are extremely important for the development of children. At LGI, each child has a key person who understands his or her developmental needs.

At GEMS Education we aim to be at the forefront of educational technology. We have combined our experience running successful schools with some of the worlds leading e-learning experts to ensure we meet our ambitions to deliver education to more students around the world.

By deploying e-learning technology GEMS can provide a gateway to global knowledge and an effective channel to reach out across communities. How does it work? The system works with a two-way transmission of live video footage between a teacher in a studio and multiple classrooms in remote parts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This can be done using a broadband connection or Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite technology. The technology enables master teachers or guest lecturers at the studio to appear on virtual classroom screens alongside relevant digital educational content. Students can interact both with the teacher and with each other through the virtual classroom interface.

What are the advantages? High Quality Learner Experience 100% synchronous learning experience maximizes learning potential Peer interaction among students transcends even a classroom learning experience Students from diverse locations share and learn from each others experiences Suite of best-in-class subject specific digital content and teacher lesson aids Sessions can be recorded and archived for absentees Lower Delivery Costs Flexible, scalable lowcost technology No additional infrastructure costs needed Multiple schools per teacher allows large teacher :pupil ratio, which brings down per capita cost per student
