Two Indian-origin men have been found guilty of defrauding a former city council in New Zealand of nearly NZ$850,000 (US$676,855). The Auckland District Council Thursday found Hemant Kumar Maharaj and Suresh Din guilty of defrauding the former North Shore City Council to the tune of NZ$849,000 through their corrupt scheme, according to a statement issued by the Serious Frauds Office (SFO). The two were found guilty of four joint counts of using a document with intent to defraud and seven counts of dishonestly using a document, over a period of approximately 10 years, using their roles as employer and contractor. The SFO had laid the charges against Maharaj and Din in September 2010. Simon McArley, acting chief of SFO, said that while New Zealand's public sector has a clean record in terms of corruption, still vigilance and robust internal processes are needed to maintain that reputation. "Addressing abuse of public funds by corrupt public employees is one of SFO's highest priorities," he said in a statement. "The impact of the schemes can best be addressed by the earliest possible intervention. It may take courage but we strongly encourage people to bring matters to our attention as soon as they suspect unethical practices."
When Maharaj was working for the North Shore City Council in 1999, he and Din formed an agreement to invoice the council for road and berm maintenance work. Though the work mentioned was never completed, the pair used 151 invoices in their scheme, with Din submitting the invoices under the name of S Din Family Trust and Maharaj then signing off the work as being completed and forwarding the invoice for payment. North Shore City, a former territorial authority in the Auckland region of this south Pacific island nation, was governed by the North Shore City Council from 1989 to 2010. In November 2010, the city was merged with the rest of the Auckland region. The North Shore City Council was then abolished and the place came under the purview of the Auckland City Council. According to the SFO statement, Maharaj has also been found guilty of two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to the alteration and provision of a diary and the creation of a receipt book. Din has been found guilty of one count of using a document with intent to defraud and six counts of dishonestly using a document in relation to the use of income tax returns that claimed expenditure he had not incurred, it added. The two are set to be sentenced July 25.
Fijis first casino which was to be built on Denarau Island in Nadi will now be built at a different location, as now disclosed. Also, a final extension of one week has been given to casino developer One Hundred Sands Limited to finalise arrangements. Attorney-General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum confirmed that the developers had sought a final extension of one week, which Government has approved. They have requested for an extension to the deadline. They have been given another week, until the end of next week to commence construction. They have also requested that they change the site where the casino will
be built. So, we have given them that approval as well. The new site is believed to be close to Denarau Island. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the delays faced by the developers were partly due to unfavourable image of Fiji being portrayed overseas by some people. They have had some challenges in respect to some of the information that has been given out from various institutions from Fiji. This wrong information, Mr SayedKhaiyum said obstructed the company in raising funds. He said wrong information about Fiji was being given by some lawyers and financial institutions. But not withstanding that fact that we
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has today highlighted that Government is working on bridging the digital divide to ensure all Fijians have equal access to benefits of technology. In opening the new telecentre at Lomeri Secondary School in the Serua Province, the head of government said telecentres play a key role in Governments work to empower all Fijians by providing them access to the digital world. The centre will provide free internet services for more than 280 students including citizens from surrounding villages within the province. Every Fijian, no matter where theyre from or how much money they make, deserves equal access to the benefits of technology. Thats why my Government is bridging the divide the digital divide between the rich and poor, the urban and rural, PM Bainimarama said. As a result of our reforms, more Fijians now have access to computers and the internet than ever before. PM Bainimarama said Government was working towards achieving 100 per cent mobile coverage in Fiji by giving subsidies to companies that provide services in remote and rural areas. And every time I open another one of these telecentres, hundreds if not thousands more Fijians are plugged into Fijis telecommunications revolution,
PM Bainimarama said. By the end of this year, 60-thousand more Fijians including five thousand students will have access to the internet at more than 20 community telecentres across Fiji. Lomeri Secondary School principal, Iosefo Matavue said that students were benefitting from the internet services as they previously had to travel far to get access. Students have been using the internet to source information for their school projects and with this new telecentre they will not have to travel as far as Navua to access internet services, Mr Matavue said. Vanuadogo villager, Keresi Tawake whilst commending government for the new telecentre said the new facilities has brought services closer to the community of Batiwai. I would like to thank the Prime Minister and Government for bringing services closer to the community here, previously we used to travel far to access internet and use computers, Ms Tawake said. The opening of the telecentre today has opened new doors of opportunity for us. Government has already opened 10 telecentres so far with close to 20,000 Fijians using these facilities to connect with friends and family in Fiji and abroad, search for jobs, do school work, research, print, scan and photocopy.
are quite keen to ensure that the project does commence but we also have our limitations in terms of time constraints. We have given them the extension and
if they dont agree to it, we will obviously have to rethink the way forward, in terms of whether we call for new tenders and expressions of interest.

Family celebrations, including a healing wedding and a 50th birthday party, were ruined when Anita Cranston took thousands of dollars in deposits for a luxury Fiji holiday home at the centre of legal action, a court has been told. Cranston denies 24 charges of using documents to get deposits totalling over $60,000 for the $2.5 million holiday home in Denarau. The Crown says Cranston and her partner spent the money received from 19 people to maintain a lifestyle that included a rented apartment in Auckland's Sentinel building. Leonie Wallace told Cranston's defended hearing in the Auckland District Court that her family was e following rates: forward to celebrating her looking 2.79 brother's wedding in Fiji a year after herthe mother wasquick murdered. 2.84 (delete 30 days close) She said she emailed Cranston a number of times in January 2011 before phoning her to confirm the booking and paying a $2625 deposit. "The tone was very friendly and I guess that's what made it possible to open up," she told the court. But after media reports of a police investigation into Cranston and her now deceased partner Craig Mudgeway, Ms Wallace said she tried to get her money back. She said Cranston emailed her to say they were trying to get money out of a finance company but the deadline came and went and Ms Wallace never saw a cent. Her family had to find alternative accommodation at a hotel which ended up costing them an extra $5000. Dunedin accountant Paul Moodie booked Cranston's holiday home at the same time as Ms Wallace. He hoped to celebrate his 50th birthday with friends and family and paid $6375 in two deposits. Mr Moodie said he found the house on holidayhomes.co.nz and said it looked "luxurious".

"The photos were gorgeous. There were plenty of rooms for my adult children to have a room to themselves." He said the flights were booked and a rental car organised when he saw media reports alleging Cranston was involved in a scam. Despite asking for a refund, Mr Moodie said he never saw his money again. Under cross-examination from Cranston's lawyer Alice Kemp, Mr Moodie confirmed that he did not know what steps were taken to recover his deposit. In her opening address, Ms Kemp said days quick close) that while her client(30could be open to civil action, she had not committed a criminal offence. "In brief, there was no dishonesty here." But Crown prosecutor Rachael Reed said Cranston knew the property had been the subject of legal action in the High Court in Nadi and had doublebooked some customers. Ms Reed said Mudgeway bought the property in 2008 but two years later he was defaulting on the loan payments and legal action in the High Court in Fiji saw him lose the property the following year. At the same time Mudgeway had promised to sell the property to partly cover a $40 million debt with Westpac Bank. He ended up being bankrupt. Ms Reed said that despite the legal action, Cranston continued taking deposits for the home. "The Crown says this is a case about a women's fixation with her own lifestyle that led her to take advantage of others." She said the couple were living off the deposits and spending the money on rent for their $850 per week apartment in the Sentinel at Takapuna. Ms Reed said a further $20,000 was spent on hotels and motels around the country and $30,000 on food and alcohol The hearing, before Judge David Harvey, is set down for two weeks.

The Reserve Bank of Fiji is currently liaising with suppliers to solve the issue of coin discoloration after noting concerns from the public on the tarnishing of the newly issued $1 and $2 coins as well as the confusion on the coin sizes. RBF Governor Barry Whiteside said the discoloration of the $1 and $2 coins were first identified early this year, soon after these coins were issued into circulation from January 2, 2013, and the suppliers were immediately notified of the issue. "The discoloration issue, unfortunately, has contributed to confusion amongst members of the public in differentiating between the two coins as the designs can be difficult to see in poor light conditions," he said. "The RBF is currently liaising with the suppliers in arriving at an amicable solution to address the discoloration and sizing issue." Governor Whiteside said that this issue is only with the $1 and $2 coins and
that no issues have been experienced with 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coin denominations. He said as soon as an agreement has been reached with the suppliers, the RBF will further advise the public of any remedial action to be taken and has urged people to take extra precautions when handling cash for making payments. He added that all the new Flora and Fauna coins, including the $1 and $2 coins have a unique feature which was specifically included to assist the visually challenged. "The edges of each coin are different. For the $1 or Saqamoli, the edge is milled with many uninterrupted grooves. This is easily identified by running your fingernail along the edge of the coin. In direct contrast, the $2 coin has a completely smooth edge, so you feel nothing but smoothness when running your fingernail across it."
In the 50 years of the Pan Pacific and South-East Asia Womens Associations existence in Fiji, this year will be the first time for Fiji to host the 25th PPSEAWA International Conference. The week-long conference will be held at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay on August 24-31 later this year. Ravesi Johnston, the vice-president of PPSEAWA Fiji, said this triennial conference would provide a good opportunity for Fiji to host highlevel womens delegations from the countries of South-East Asia. This will become a platform to share information and experience on various policies and programmes based on the theme, Managing the Environment for a Sustainable and Peaceful World, Mrs Johnston said. The conference will also focus on the three major sub-themes, Disaster
Management and Food Security, Our Biodiversity, Our Identity, Our Responsibility and Managing the Home Environment for a Peaceful and Happy Family Existence. She said the conference had been made possible with a timely grant of $50,000 from the Fijian Government. Since its inception in 1928, this is will be the first time Fiji hosts the PPSEAWA International Conference and we are grateful to the Government, particularly the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni, for her support. We are expecting about 200 participants from Fiji and South-East Asia including Russia, she said. Dr Luveni said: Hosting the meeting, reflected that Fiji had been recognised and embraced as a deserving member of PPSEAWA.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is now involved in efforts to stop incitement by people spreading lies on issues like land. Chief operations officer LieutenantColonel Amani Suliano confirmed at Lomary Secondary School that they were closely monitoring the situation. I must admit that some chiefs are involved in this, Lieutenant-Colonel Suliano said. He said these liars have been going around villages distributing pamphlets intended to cause trouble. The RFMF chief operations officer said some had been questioned and had admitted that they were used by some
other people. Some retired civil servants are also involved but Lieutenant-Colonel Suliano said these people were fighting a losing battle. He said RFMF had already predicted that this would happen as the country was preparing for the 2014 elections. It has happened as we had predicted and this will increase as political parties prepare for the elections. He said most people were not listening to those involved as they knew they had a Government that had committed itself to delivering services to the people. Lieutenant-Colonel Suliano has warned all those spreading lies to stop.

Fiji Army Heading To Syria Border While other peacekeeping nations are roles.
fleeing the Syria border, Fijian soldiers are to go in wearing United Nation's peacekeeper helmets. The UN has had peacekeepers, including eight New Zealanders, on the Golan Heights between Syria and Israel since 1974. But as soldiers now face kidnapping and being shot at in the Syrian civil war, contributing nations are pulling out. Fiji Military Forces Land Force Commander Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga has told state radio the Fiji military regime is talking to the UN while preparing 163 military and health personnel UN Disengagement Observer Force. Ever since military commander Voreqe Bainimarama staged a democracy ending military coup in 2006, New Zealand and others have urged the UN not to use Fijians in peacekeeping
But as the latest negotiations show, they are willing to go where no one else will. Fiji could have as many as 300 soldiers on the Golan by later this year. Austria last week said it was pulling out its 377 soldiers and Croatia has already gone. New Zealand is considering withdraw but has yet to make a decision. Tikoitoga says a departure date has yet to be decided. Fiji currently has a unit in Iraq providing security services for the UN as well as forces in the Sinai monitoring the Egypt-Israel border. A Golan deployment will be a return to the neighbourhood for the Fijians who from 1978 to 2002 provided 15,000 soldiers for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon. Thirty five Fijians were killed in that service.
A committee has been organised to identify what resources international countries are willing to contribute during Fijis 2014 elections. Attorney General and Minister for Elections Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who chaired the first inaugural meeting of international committee to discuss assistance for Fijian Elections Office said this marks a significant step forward in Fijis preparations for the 2014 elections. The Bainimarama Governments top priority is making sure that elections are conducted in a smooth, transparent and political manner, using best international practices, unlike elections in the past. Partnership with the international community will help
us achieve this, Sayed-Khaiyum said. Members are expected to report to the Minister for Elections on what specific assistance their governments or organizations will be willing to provide to the Fijian Elections Office in preparation for the 2014 elections. Those present during the meeting included High Commissioners, Ambassadors and representatives from United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, India, France and Britain, as well as representatives from the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Commonwealth Secretariat. The next meeting will be held early next month.

Have you ever received a gift that you simply did not want on the celebration of a special occasion? It happens all the time! Such unwanted gifts generally end up getting stored away in the corners of dark cupboards or in turn recycled and given away as gifts. But this is now a thing of the past. Courts (Fiji) Limited, owned by Vision Group, has taken the initiative to open a gift registry which was launched Tuesday. The gift registry would be perfect for whether it be your wedding, anniversary, birthday, farewell, or baby shower and intend to invite friends and families as guests to celebrate the occasion. Courts chief executive, PL Munasinghe, said: You can actually nominate the gifts you would like to receive from your guests through the Courts Gift Registry. This is something to add value to customers shopping experience and is a unique thing keeping up with the technology advancement.
The Courts Gift Registry is fully automated and very simple to use. Mr Munasinghe explained how the process works: Walk into a Courts nominated Store (Samabula, Rodwell Road, Namaka, Lautoka), browse around the store and
select a list of all gifts you would like to receive from your guests; Walk to the Courts Gift Registry Computer Terminal, register your personal details and enter the list of gifts you would like to receive from your guests; Obtain your Gift Registration Number; Let your guests know that you have opened an account in the Courts Gift Registry and tell them your Gift Registration Number. A statement can be printed on your invitation card as follows: A Gift Register Has Been Opened at Courts. If you intend to give a Gift, please walk into any Courts Store Fiji Wide provide the Gift Registration Number xxxxxxx and select from the list of Gifts we have chosen; A guest can then walk into any Courts Store, give the Gift Registration Number and select a gift according to the sum they wish to spend from the list of gifts you have nominated. Once a particular item has been purchased by a guest, that item will be automatically removed from the list of gifts; and The guest has also the choice of picking up the gift or asking Courts to deliver the gift to you at a nominated place and date. Courts will attractively gift wrap the items.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) is calling for nominations from ministries and departments for the Fiji Civil Service Medal (CSM) award. Government had agreed to the reactivation of the award of the CSM with the concurrence of Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama early this year. PSC permanent secretary, Parmesh Chand said civil servants may be awarded the CSM for distinguished devotion to duty and outstanding achievement. A committee of permanent secretaries for the CSM has been appointed and they have established a criterion for screening and granting of the awards. The nominations submitted need to have names of those civil servants who have served with dedication, are committed to their work, have had
excellent attendance, have gone that extra mile, served with high example and hold a position of responsibility. They need to have recorded outstanding achievements, where the nominee has done something extraordinary to further the interests of the public service, Mr Chand said. Mr Chand said the names of nominees will be presented to the College of Honour following concurrence of the Prime Minister as Minister responsible for public service and the investiture will be done by the President, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. Nominations for the CSM will have to be submitted by permanent secretaries to PSC permanent secretary, who is Chair of the CSM committee by June 30th, 2013.

Two doctors at the Lautoka Hospital have been suspended following investigations in a case which led to the death of a woman in April. Permanent Secretary for Health Dr Eloni Tora said further action would be taken on the medical officers if necessary as they await the results of the investigations. After the initial investigation, the two medical officers were given suspension letters.

Two officers have been sent suspension letters. Further investigations will be conducted which will decide further actions on the two officers, Dr Tora said. It is believed that a 25-year-old woman died after an operation at the Lautoka Hospital. The woman was admitted to have her womb removed but later died of complications. Her family claimed that she died as a result of the doctors negligence.

Fiji Customs officials have confiscated 41 fake certificates alleged to have been issued by a locally-based university. The fake certificates were in a package that was part of overseas consignments to be cleared by Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority officials marked for local destinations. Authority CEO Jitoko Tikolevu said the package was detained after officials became suspicious of the authenticity of the certificates. He said the university concerned verified that the certificates were counterfeit. He said investigations by Customs officers at the Customs Baggage Hall revealed that the certificates were printed in a foreign country and were being sent to a local address. A statement issued, signed by Mr Tikolevu, said the package was
addressed to no particular person, and an overseas phone number was listed as a contact. It stated that the certificates were for English language courses. The statement added that according to the courier company, which was to deliver the package, all charges had been prepaid. "We will be referring the matter to police for further investigation," Mr Tikolevu said. "However, this is a reminder to members of the public that we will be vigilant in our work. "FRCA's role is to protect our border and we will ensure the security of all ports of entries at all times." Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said police would wait for a report from the authority before they carried out their investigations.
The Emperor Gold Mining Company Limited was ordered by the Court of Appeal to pay a nominal cost of $1000 to Mine Workers Union of Fiji and Vatukoula Mine Workers Staff Association. Justices of Appeal Justice Susantha Lecamwasam, Justice Anjala Wati and Justice Chandrasiri Kotigalage dismissed the appeal from an order of a judicial review application by the High Court at the judgement in Suva late last month. The court heard the invocation of judicial review arose pursuant to a disagreement on a redundancy packages offered by the company to the mine workers union and staff association. It heard that members of the two groups were employed under the company, which had carried out mining operations in Vatukoula for a long period of time. And as the mining operations were running at a loss over a few years, the company decided to cease operations and close down a section of the mine and treat some of the workers as redundant. It further heard that from April 2006, the company through the issuance
of a number of letters and circulars informed the workers of the closure, which triggered discussions between the workers and the management over the redundancy payments. And the packages demanded by workers and staff members oscillated between three months' pay upfront and the payment of two weeks for every year of service. Having heard the matter, the Arbitration Tribunal made an award that the redundant employee members of the union and the association were to be paid redundancy packages of five months upfront together with two weeks for each year of service. The instant of appeal was against the court order which was dismissed by the three justices of appeals. "Taking into consideration the losses incurred by the company as a commercial enterprise into 2005 and 2006 which had a crippling effect on its performance and a sympathetic manner in which it treated its employees by not resorting to take steps under clause 17 or 10 of the agreement," Justice Lecamwasam said. The other justices of appeal agreed with Justice Lecamwasam's decision.

Lautoka special administrator Praveen Bala has added responsibilities for looking after the affairs of Nadi town. He brings plenty of experience to the role. This follows the dismissal of Aisea Tuidraki and Nemia Tagi from the Nadi Town Council. They are being investigated by the Fiji Commission Against Corruption. Mr Bala holds extensive experience in public office and is also a former mayor of Ba as well as a former President of the Fiji Local Government Association. Meanwhile, Sigatoka River Safaris managing director Jay Whyte is pleased to assume the role of Sigatoka special administrator and without remuneration. Mr Whytes appointment follows the dismissal of predecessor Aisea Tuidraki and former Nadi Town Council chief executive officer Nemia Tagi, who are being investigated by the Fiji Independent Commission Against
Corruption. Mr Whyte said immediate plans include consultations with rate payers next Tuesday at 6pm. He said this is to hear their views on the positives and negatives and allow them to have a clear pathway for dialogue. The areas I would like to work on are providing the rate payers with a great service, build on the positives we have and create a town which will thrive and benefit from our points of difference with other towns around Fiji,. Mr Whyte accepted a request from Government to take on the role as Sigtaoka special administrator but declined remuneration, opting to provide his service freely. I was asked if I was willing to assist the town that I call home and love, so it really was an easy decision to make. True public service is done with the knowledge you are giving back not because you are receiving paymentthis is what motivated the decision to work without remuneration,.
Three local companies are currently before the Employment Relations Court charged with non-compliance of child labour-related laws. And this is the first three cases to be prosecuted for alleged child labour offences in Fiji. This was confirmed to the reporter by the Manager Labour Standard and Child Labour Atish Kumar. According to Mr Kumar the Labour Ministrys Child Labour Unit had recorded 146 child labour cases in their database since 2011. Out of this, 24 children have directly been sent to school through the assistance of the Education Ministry while the remaining 122 children had undergone various workshops and awareness programs. We found that 122 of these children were already in school but were partly engaged in child labour and weve assisted them in awareness and workshops, Mr Kumar said. Although none of the companies could be identified publicly, according to Mr Kumar the construction sector was amongst those that have been
investigated for similar cases. He said the increase in awareness on the issue has resulted in the overwhelming reports received for cases. International Labour Organisation Director-General Guy Ryder stressed that there was no place and no excuse for child labour in domestic or any other form of work. In a statement delivered by Mr Ryder to commemorate World Day against Child Labour, he said child labour was an abuse of human rights and denied children hope for a future. He stated that child labour in its worst form exposes children to slavery, drug trafficking and prostitution. Child labour is most difficult to tackle when it takes place behind closed doors away from the public eye. This is frequently the case with child labour in domestic work, with children sometimes working far from their families and communities, Mr Ryder said. Guests at the Suva celebration included International Labour Organisation Director for Pacific Island Countries David Lamotte and Deputy Permanent Secretary Samuela Namosimalua.

Goodman Fielder Asia Pacific, general manager Fiji, Chris Zaayman hands over sponsorship cheque to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests; Liutenant-Colonel Inia Seruiratu at the Crest Agriculture Show 2013 naming rights announcement The Ministry of Agriculture hopes to actively engage the tourism industry during the Crest Agriculture Show this year. This was revealed as Goodman Fielder Asia Pacific, the manufacturers of Crest chicken, was once again announced as major sponsors of what has become the annual agriculture show. This time the company is increasing its sponsorship pledge by $5000 to $45,000. The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Ropate Ligairi signed a memorandum of agreement and naming rights with Goodman Fielder. Every year we do something different to promote the show and this year we have requested hotels to promote the show to the tourists, Mr Ligairi said. The tourism industry is vital to the economy just as much as the agricultural sector is to the economy. By bringing these two together, the show can be more successful. The show will also see participants from the Commonwealth Veterinary Association meeting which falls in line with the show. The weeklong events theme is Agriculture for Fijis Health & Wealth and will be held in Lautoka from September 3 to 7. A similar but miniature show will be held in Labasa prior to the week long event in Lautoka. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests Lieutenant-Colonel Inia Seruiratu, said: From $40,000 last year to an additional $5000 in kind, this will surely boost the shows momentum in September. He acknowledged that through Goodman Fielders continuous support, the show had grown in terms of delivery of displays, stakeholder support and popularity amongst our rural as well as urban population. The sponsorship and donation in kind will go a long way in assisting the organiation of another successful show this year, he said. My ministry is currently working with our stakeholders as well as Crest to ensure this.
Increased sponsorship
Goodman Fielder Asia Pacific general manager Fiji, Chris Zaayman, said the main objective for sponsoring the event was help promote the agriculture as a whole in Fiji. The theme this year captures what we believe at Crest Chicken: that a strong agriculture sector is good for the health and wealth of the people in Fiji, Mr Zaayman said. We hope the show will help promote the agriculture sector as a viable career opportunity to the youths of Fiji as enhancing the agriculture capability is very important for now and the long term.

American talk-show host Oprah Winfrey is donating $12m towards a new museum in Washington DC dedicated to African American history. After previously giving $1m to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, her total contribution is its biggest so far. The museum on Washington's National Mall is due to be completed in 2015. It will house a 35-seat theatre named after Winfrey, who is also a member of the museum's advisory council. Lonnie Bunch, director of the museum said the media mogul had been very much involved in its creation and talks were taking place to acquire memorabilia from her career.
'Deeply appreciative'
He said he would love to have one of the microphones used during her television show - one of the mostwatched programmes in US history, which ended after 25 years in 2011 - to add to the museum's collection of more than 22,000 items. The collection helps to tell the story of African American history from slavery to the post-Civil War period, the civil
rights era, the Harlem Renaissance and the 21st Century. In a statement released by the museum, Winfrey said: "I am deeply appreciative of those who paved the path for me and all who follow in their footsteps. "By investing in this museum, I want to help ensure that we both honour and preserve our culture and history, so that the stories of who we are will live on for generations to come," she added. Costing $500m to build, the US government is providing half of the funding with the remainder being raised through private donations. When in opens in 2015, it will be the 19th Smithsonian museum. Some of the items which will be displayed include the glass-topped casket that held the body of 14-yearold Emmett Till, whose 1955 murder in Mississippi for whistling at a white woman helped spark the civil rights movement. The museum's most recent big acquisition was a South Carolina slave cabin dating from the 19th Century. The cabin from Edisto Island was disassembled in May in preparation for its move to the museum.

An apartment block collapsed in central Mumbai, killing at least one person with more feared trapped inside, on the second day of heavy monsoon rains in the city. "We have information that one person is dead," a police inspector in the Mahim neighbourhood, where the collapse happened, said. "Rescue operations are on, but they are difficult due to the heavy rain." Four diggers and a crowd of people were gathered around a high mound of rubble - the remains of half of the five-storey building that caved in, a photographer at the scene said. The other half of the building was still standing. The Press Trust of India news agency, quoting a municipal officer, said an elderly woman had been killed while
Air New Zealand's fleet is in for a makeover, with bold new livery incorporating the iconic New Zealand 'fernmark' logo. Most aircraft will be dressed to impress in the airline's standard white livery, which will now feature a dramatic black section sweeping up from the rear of the wings, as seen in PR shot showing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip was "in good spirits" as he spent his 92nd birthday in hospital recovering from exploratory abdominal surgery, Buckingham Palace said. "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh is progressing according to plans at this early stage. He is comfortable and in good spirits," a brief statement said. "He will remain in hospital for up to two weeks, and it is expected he will then be taking a period of convalescence of approximately two months." The reason he needed an operation has not been made public, but it followed abdominal investigations the week before last. The Queen, 87, visited him later on Monday, staying for around half-anhour before being whisked away in front of a crowd of onlookers. Prince Edward, their youngest son, was the first family member to visit. The Earl of Wessex spent about 20 minutes at the hospital earlier on Monday. The 49-year-old only told reporters his father was "well, thank you", as he left. A man turned up at the hospital delivering flowers and two balloons,
one reading "Feel better", and the other "Keep calm birthday boy" with a crown on top. Prince Philip's birthday was also marked by traditional royal gun salutes at the Tower of London and Hyde Park in the capital, as well as from Edinburgh Castle. "Happy Birthday" was played during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. As usual, the British flag was flying on government buildings across the country to mark his birthday. Prime minister David Cameron sent the prince his best wishes. "Wishing the Duke of Edinburgh a very happy 92nd birthday as he recovers in hospital," he wrote on Twitter. The analysis of the prince's operation results was expected to be completed this week. He was taken to hospital by car for the planned appointment shortly after attending a Buckingham Palace garden party on Thursday. Prince Philip has now been hospitalised four times in two years, but aides insist he is generally in good health for a man of his age.
The Tauranga woman who bought a winning $9.85 million Lotto Powerball ticket hid it in a locked tin box in a wardrobe before claiming the prize. The woman took the security precautions after realising last Saturday that she had scooped the big win. She provided some information about herself after coming forward but did not want to be identified. A confessed Absolutely Fabulous fan, she planned to celebrate by taking close friends to "dinner at a nice restaurant". "I'll definitely be looking after the bill," she said in answers supplied to the Bay of Plenty Times. The woman, who would not reveal her age or occupation, claimed the prize in person at the New Zealand Lotteries Commission office in Wellington after keeping the ticket secure. "I locked it in a tin box with a padlock and hid it in a wardrobe. I was quite sure it would be safe in there. I only had to check on it once." The woman said she had never been rich but "always comfortable". People described her as humble, friendly, kind and caring, she said. "I really enjoy sewing, travel, cooking and doing fitness activities. I'm also a massive fan of Absolutely Fabulous." She decided to buy the Triple Dip ticket from Mount Paper Power at Central
Parade on a whim: "I was just passing by the shop and randomly thought I'd give it a go." The woman was cooking dinner on Saturday night and took a break to check the draw results on her phone and found she had won. "I had to check quite a few times because I couldn't believe it was actually happening. When I realised I had won, I suddenly lost my appetite," she said. "I phoned my brother to tell him the news and he replied, 'I never thought I would ever have the chance to say my sister is a multi-millionaire'." The woman said the win was beginning to "sink in now". She planned to build her dream house in Tauranga, upgrade her car and travel. She declined to say what line of work she was in but said she was considering giving it up. "I might give up work, I haven't decided yet. But whatever happens, I won't let this win change me. It will just be lovely to not have to worry about money and to spend more time with my family." "There have been lots of congratulations and people checking their tickets to see if it was them," she said. "It's just amazing." Another Tauranga Lotto player won $479,069 on Saturday in Lotto Strike.

A Detroit grandmother testified that she could only watch in terror as masked police officers with guns drawn stormed her home in a hunt for a murder suspect that led to the fatal shooting of her 7-year-old granddaughter. Police officer Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the May 2010 death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones who was asleep on a couch when the police raided the house. Aiyana's grandmother, Mertilla Jones, said she was lying on her stomach on the floor facing the door when the police officers forced their way inside. "As soon as they came in, their guns were just pointing right there, and he pulled the trigger," Mertilla Jones said of Weekley. "I seen the light leave out of her eyes and the blood started gushing out her mouth and she was dead." There is no argument that an unintentional shot from Weekley's gun killed Aiyana after police fired a stun grenade and stormed the home. Weekley has said his gun accidentally fired when Jones reached for it.
Prosecutors say he was negligent in failing to control his weapon. Jones said there were only seconds between the police entering the house and the shot being fired. She said Aiyana's head was propped against the armrest of the couch as she slept and that Weekley was holding the gun right next to the armrest when his weapon discharged. "The gun went off and shot her in the head. I started screaming and hollering. ... 'Y'all done killed my grandbaby,'" Jones told the courtroom. Jones said she didn't interfere with or touch any of the officers, who were dressed entirely in black, including their masks and combat boots. Police were accompanied by a crew from the reality TV show, The First 48. Last week, a neighbour testified that he tried to tell officers before they raided the home that children were inside. Under cross-examination Jones said the officers were negligent. "They knew there were children in there. So why would they come in there like that? They came to kill, and they killed a 7-year-old."

Canada's passports are being updated to include chip technology and watermark images designed to prevent fraud, but are also going to cost a lot more. The new passports will have computer chips embedded technology that's already used in almost 100 other countries, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said. Each blank page of the document will also contain watermarks depicting iconic images from Canadian history. "Canada's new passport is not just a ticket to new places, new cultures, and new experiences," Baird said. "It tells the world who we are: a nation built on freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law." The new passports will be renewable for either five- or 10-year periods, but they'll come with a price: $120 for five years, up from the current $87, and $160 for the 10-year option. Passports for children will be $57, an increase of $20. For those applying outside Canada, the fee skyrockets to $190 for a five-year passport up from $97 and $260 for the document that would expire in a decade.
them. The chip embedded in the back cover of the new passport makes the document more tamper-proof. It stores all of the identifying information that's found on the second page of the passport, minus the signature. The new features aren't foolproof, said Baird, but they should cut down on the number of fakes produced every year. "Nothing is ever impossible, but I think what we've done is raise the bar, not just with the chip in the passport but also the security features on every page." "(It) makes it demonstrably more difficult to commit fraud."

Employer Kept Nannys Passport To Stop Her From Leaving, Court Hears
A man accused of keeping a Filipina nanny in domestic servitude for nearly two years held onto her passport because he feared she would flee upon arriving in Canada, a Vancouver police constable has told a human trafficking trial. Constable Robin Shook was one of two officers who responded to the Vancouver home of Franco Orr and his wife Nicole Huen on June 13, 2010, after an altercation involving nanny Leticia Sarmiento. That incident resulted in Ms. Sarmiento leaving the home for good after what she says was two years of being forced to work 16hour days, seven days a week, for little pay. The couple has pleaded not guilty to charges of organizing illegal entry into Canada and organizing illegal employment of a foreign national. In B.C. Supreme Court on Monday, Constable Shook said Ms. Sarmiento seemed visibly shaken, visibly upset when he and Constable Craig Lapthorne attended the residence. After speaking with her, he asked Mr. Orr for her passport, which, earlier in the trial, Ms. Sarmiento had accused Mr. Orr of keeping so she could not leave. I asked Mr. Orr to get Ms. Sarmientos passport, he said. Mr. Orr said that he had to have Ms. Sarmientos passport because Filipino nannies would leave if you gave them the chance. Mr. Orr said that, frequently, employers would hire a nanny and pay for them to work for them, and then the employer would be waiting at the airport. As the nanny would show up, [the nanny] would just disappear. Both constables testified that, when asked for Ms. Sarmientos passport, Mr. Orr retrieved it from a plastic folder in the drawer of a desk in the living room. Neither constable remembered the drawer being locked. Following the incident, Ms. Sarmiento told police she had worked for the couple in Hong Kong without problems for about a year. She claims she was tricked into moving to Canada in September, 2008, on the promise she would become a permanent resident after two years and the couple would help bring her family, including her three children, from the Philippines. Instead, she says she was forced to work 16 hours a day, seven days a week, taking care of the couples three young children and doing all the housework. For her work, she was initially paid $500 a month and later $700 a month. Ms. Sarmiento claimed the couple locked the doors using a keypad and refused to let her out. On Monday, Constable Shook said he had no recollection of anyone having to punch in a code on a keypad to enter or exit the residence. He also said he did not see anything out of the norm, such as physical restraints, although he acknowledged the incident was three years ago and his memory could have faded. The trial also heard that Mr. Orr had brought Ms. Sarmiento into Canada on six-month visitors visa, not the required work visa. Nicholas Preovolos, the couples lawyer, has suggested Ms. Sarmiento was treated as one of the family and was never kept in the jail-like conditions she described. After she claimed she was only allowed to phone home to the Philippines once a month, for example, Mr. Preovolos produced phone records with more than 100 calls to the Philippines during her time of employment, suggesting she was allowed to phone home whenever she wanted. Ms. Sarmiento denied this and said she did not recognize the number. The trial, which started May 29, continues.
An elderly Canadian woman dubbed the "Black Widow" has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for drugging her husband on their honeymoon in Nova Scotia. Melissa Ann Shepard, 78, pleaded guilty to administering a noxious substance. She was charged last year after Fred Weeks fell ill at a bed and breakfast. She has prior convictions, including for the manslaughter of her second husband in 1992, whom she drugged and ran over twice in a car. She was also sentenced to five years in prison, in 2005, for seven counts of theft from a man in Florida whom she met online and with whom she lived for a month. Shepard was charged, last October, after her latest husband fell ill from the effects of tranquilisers mixed into his coffee on board a ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland on their honeymoon last September. The court heard that Fred Weeks came aboard the ferry fit enough easily to walk the 200 metres (220 yards) from
his car to a lift. Hospitalised But the next day he needed a wheelchair, could not put on his shoes and did not know where his car keys were. The following night, at a bed and breakfast inn, Mr Weeks fell out of bed and was taken to hospital. He survived. A statement was read out in court, saying that Shepard misinformed doctors about her husband's health, saying he had prostate problems and was suffering from dementia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. She also told the hospital that Mr Weeks, who is a father of six adult children, had no other family than her. A charge of attempted murder against Shepard was dropped because the prosecution could not prove that she had intended to kill him. Her sentence will be reduced to two years and nine months because of the time she has already served in custody before the trial. Her lawyer had argued for a shorter sentence, saying Shepard felt remorseful.

Keepsafe Mobile Storage went out of business in August without telling customers
Customers of a Richmond, B.C. public storage company say they've been paying for a service that's gone out of business, and some of them only recently found that their property was dumped or auctioned off. Keepsafe Mobile Storage ceased operations last August after being repossessed, but several customers contacted by the media say they were never told. Jerry Cooke, who lives in Mexico much of the year, said he first thought something was amiss in a phone spat with the company. "I can't believe... I'm just phoning my storage place... I shouldn't be getting this attitude," Cooke said. Cooke said he's paid between $1,400 and $2,000 for storage services since last August, not knowing the company was defunct. Bailiff Darcy VanIeperen says he has been trying to return contents of boxes repossessed from Keepsafe's old Richmond warehouse, but it's proving difficult. "We requested for a customer database to get a hold of these customers, but it was never produced," he said. VanIeperen says many of the people he has reached have similar stories to Cooke's. "They're very upset that they've still been continuing to be billed," he said. The owner of the company could not be reached for comment.
Prosecutors have charged a respected oncologist at one of the leading cancer research centers in the United States with spiking her lover and coworkers coffee with a sweet-tasting chemical used in antifreeze and medical research, causing renal failure. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, a breast cancer doctor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault against Dr. George Blumenschein, a specialist in lung and head and neck cancers at the institution. The two were in a casual sexual relationship, according to a criminal complaint. The complaint said Blumenschein, who joined M.D. Anderson in 2000, suffered a protracted loss of the use of his kidneys and is still being treated for it. M.D. Anderson officials would not say whether he is back at work. Gonzalez-Angulos lawyer, Derek Hollingsworth, told the Houston Chronicle that she is completely innocent. She is a distinguished citizen and scientist, and these allegations are totally inconsistent with her personal and professional life, Hollingsworth said in a statement. He told the Chronicle he was confident the Houston District Attorney would reconsider the charges this week. Gonzalez-Angulo, who joined M.D. Anderson in 2003, is free on $50,000 bail. She has published 119 articles in peerreviewed journals and appeared in a Day in the Lifevideo for breast cancer research last year. Gonzalez-Angulo, 42, is also involved in a large-scale clinical trial of an experimental cancer drug that she described as one of the most important trials in the last 10 years. She is a tenured professor at the
University of Texas and chief of the cancer centres section for clinical research. M.D. Anderson officials said GonzalezAngulo is on paid administrative leave, but they declined to comment further. The Texas Tribune has reported her salary as a public employee as $238,000 a year. Authorities allege that Blumenschein was poisoned on Jan. 27 when he was at Gonzalez-Angulos home. According to the charges, when Blumenschein complained that his coffee tasted sweet, she told him shed added Splenda and told him to finish it, after which she made him another cup. Blumenschein said both tasted sweet. Blumenschein usually drank his coffee black, the Chronicle said. Within four hours, he began experiencing slurred speech, poor balance and a loss of fine motor skills. He was taken to an emergency centre, where he was found to have central nervous system depression, cardiopulmonary complications and renal failure. He later had to undergo dialysis. A 24-hour urine test found crystals consistent with ethylene glycol poisoning, according to the complaint. It also said a county toxicologist concurred with the assessment. A toxicology report by a third expert indicated Blumenscheins acute severe metabolic acidosis more likely than not was due to ethylene glycol poisoning. Ethylene glycol, a solvent and starting material for the synthesis of more complex molecules, is present in all M.D. Anderson laboratories, a cancer centre research administrator said in the complaint. As a result, GonzalezAngulo had access to the substance, according to investigators.

The Crown says two morgue workers, fired for photographing the bodies of women and girls, won't be criminally charged. The workers snapped the photos in 2007 and 2011, causing outrage among families of the deceased. Sources told QMI Agency in March that staff at the morgue showed photos of women to family and friends. Crown spokesman Rene Verret says the workers might have broken internal rules, but the burden of proof for a
court is higher. "To show that a crime was committed one must prove that the person committed an indignity towards a body or a human being," Verret told QMI Agency. "In this case, these people are accused of manipulating photos. These people did not touch the bodies. They could be sanctioned, it's not up to me to judge." Chief Quebec coroner Louise Nolet had recommended a police investigation after the existence of the photos came to light.

Viruses cause most illnesses that result in vomiting or diarrhea. Bacteria, parasites, dietary changes or medications may also be responsible. Unlike older children and adults, who usually recover from these illnesses in 24 to 48 hours, infants and toddlers can take several days. The worst part of the vomiting is usually over in a matter of hours; messy stools may last several days. But the main concern during the worst of the illness is preventing the infant from becoming dehydrated. Signs of dehydration include decreased urine, dry mouth, sunken eyes and lethargy. A young infant can become dehydrated in as little as four hours if the symptoms are severe. Keep track of urine output. If your baby isn't taking fluids well and has gone several hours without detectable urine output (most babies have six to eight wet diapers a day), contact your healthcare provider for information and advice. The fluid given needs to replace the salts and water lost in the stools and to provide a little sugar for energy. Oral electrolyte solutions containing these substances -- such as Pedialyte and Ricelyte -- can be found in the formula section of your grocery store or pharmacy. If an older baby doesn't like the taste (salty, not sweet), try flavored or chilled electrolyte solutions or electrolyte solutions in Popsicle form. If your infant vomits, wait 30 to 45 minutes before attempting to refeed. If she can't keep down smaller volumes of breast milk or formula -- or if she has had multiple large, watery stools -feed her 1/2 ounce of oral electrolyte
Coloring
solution every 20 to 30 minutes. Once she can keep this fluid in, give her more at each feeding. If you breastfeed, do it for briefer periods of time, but more often. After 12 to 24 hours of clear liquids, you usually can begin to work back toward your baby's normal diet. For formulafed infants, begin with less than your baby normally takes. The stools may continue to be runny, but over the next few days they will thicken. As the baby feels better, he'll be hungrier. He may even want night feedings. If fever occurs, acetaminophen may be given. But don't give your baby antidiarrhea or anti-nausea medication unless your healthcare provider recommends it. For infants and toddlers eating solids, begin with a bland diet in small amounts. Try rice cereal mixed with breast milk, bananas, toast, crackers, potatoes or pears. These illnesses are very contagious. Be conscious of good hand-washing after diaper changes and before preparing food. Most children don't see a healthcare provider for these problems. But if symptoms seem unusually severe or don't respond to home treatment, contact your provider. When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider - Your infant has a high fever and is unable to retain clear liquids. - There are signs of dehydration. - Your baby has bloody stools. -Your infant has bright yellow or green vomit. - Your child has had diarrhea for longer than seven days.

3. Caffeine
6. Beef
9. Shellfish
1. Fish
Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can reduce the water in your body. This is dangerous if you suffer from gout. The uric acid crystals are suspended in your blood, but if you become dehydrated they can crystallize at your joints. Drinking too much of this can cause your body to become dehydrated. Drinking one cup of coffee a day is perfectly fine, but stay away from multiple cups around the same time. This could be just enough to trigger a gout attack.
Beef is one of the highest whole foods with a great amount of purine. The entire animal has moderate to high levels. Some of the cuts with the highest amount include beef chuck, beef tenderloin, beef ribs, roast beef, and beef shoulder. Beef is also high in fat, which can also trigger an attack. Other red meat foods like lamb and pork also contain high levels of purine. You dont have to rid your diet of these products altogether, but eating them in great moderation can be beneficial.
4. Organ Meats
7. Soda
In towns where the economy is based on fishing, the cases of gout are much more pronounced. This can be caused by the increase of shellfish in their diets. Shellfish contain a moderate amount of purine, but regular consumption could push your body over the edge and cause a gout attack. Shellfish high in purine include lobster, scallops, clams, and crab. Along with fish being high in purine, a varied diet that contains more than just seafood proteins is key.
If you suffer from attacks of gout, you may want to stay away from foods high in purine. Moderate levels of purine in your diet may not affect gout, but high levels will. Fish with high levels of purine include herring, sardines, carp, cod, haddock, salmon, trout, tuna, and anchovies. Eating small amounts of these foods should not produce an acute attack, however a diet high in purine rich fish can.
2. Alcohol
The organs of animals is where purine tends to end up, making these foods bad triggers for gout. Stay away from the liver, heart, lungs, and spleen of animals. Calfs liver is the highest, with 460 mg of purine per serving. The regular meat of animals is also high in purines. Chicken ranks moderately for purine count, but you may eat more servings of this lean protein.
5. Fried Foods
Drinking soda is dangerous if you are at risk for gout. Studies have shown a direct link to fructose sweetened drinks and gout attacks. Many soda varieties are sweetened with fructose. The studies show that the increased gout incidences over the last decades correlate to the increased soda consumption. The risk of gout has risen from 16 cases in 100,000 people in 1977 to 42 cases in 100,000 people in 1996. Popular soda beverages also come caffeinated, which can further your risk for a gout attack. The caffeine can cause dehydration because it is a diuretic. This can cause the uric acid in your body to crystallize, triggering a gout attack.
8. Rich Sauces
Consuming alcohol is one of a biggest triggers of a painful gout attack. Studies have shown that beer in particular is dangerous. One study followed 47,000 men for 12 years and found that 2% of them developed gout. Those that had more alcohol in their diet had a much
Fruits are so healthy, it can be hard to consider them to be gout causing. Fruit juices have naturally and artificially occurring fructose sugar levels. Eating fruit itself is fine because the soluble fiber limits the release of the sugars. Fruit juice is like pure sugar water in comparison. One study found that women who drink high fructose liquids had a 74% higher risk for gout. The fructose rich drinks can increase uric acid levels. Stay away from orange juice in particular as studies have found this juice in particular has a potent risk.

Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water. Saturated fat lowers the body's ability to eliminate uric acid. Choosing plantbased protein, such as beans and legumes, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products will help you cut down the amount of saturated fat in your diet. High-fat meals also contribute to obesity, which is linked to gout. Limit or avoid alcohol. Fluids can help remove uric acid from your body. Aim for 8 to 16 glasses a day. A glass is 8 ounces (237 milliliter). There's also some evidence that drinking four to six cups of coffee a day lowers gout risk in men. A sample menu Here's a look at what you might eat during a typical day on a gout diet: Breakfast Whole-grain, unsweetened cereal with skim or low-fat milk, topped with fresh fruit Whole-wheat toast with trans-free margarine 100 percent fruit juice Coffee
Purpose
Gout occurs when high levels of uric acid in your blood cause crystals to form and accumulate around a joint. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines. Purines occur naturally in your body, but you also get them from eating certain foods, such as organ meats, anchovies, herring, asparagus and mushrooms. A gout diet helps to control the production and elimination of uric acid, which may help prevent gout attacks or reduce their severity. The diet isn't a treatment for gout, but may help you control your attacks. Obesity also is a risk factor for gout, so losing weight can help you lower your risk of attacks.
Diet details
A gout diet reduces your intake of foods that are high in purines, such as animal products, which helps control your body's production of uric acid. The diet also limits alcohol, particularly beer, which has been linked to gout attacks. If you're overweight or obese, lose weight. However, avoid fasting and rapid weight loss because these can promote a gout attack. Drink plenty of fluids to help flush uric acid from your body. Also avoid high-protein weight-loss diets, which can cause you to produce too much uric acid (hyperuricemia).
Animal proteins are high in purine. Avoid or severely limit high-purine foods, such as organ meats, herring, anchovies and mackerel. Red meat (beef, pork and lamb), fatty fish and
Alcohol interferes with the elimination of uric acid from your body. Drinking beer, in particular, has been linked to gout attacks. If you're having an attack, avoid all alcohol. However, when you're not having an attack, drinking one or two 5-ounce (148-milliliter) servings a day of wine is not likely to increase your risk. Limit or avoid foods sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Fructose is the only carbohydrate known to increase uric acid. It is best to avoid beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, such as soft drinks or juice drinks. Juices that are 100 percent fruit juice do not seem to stimulate uric acid production as much. Choose complex carbohydrates. Eat more whole grains and fruits and vegetables and fewer refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, cakes and candy. Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Some studies have shown that low-fat dairy products can help

The 1975 Hrishikesh Mukherjee-directed light-hearted drama "Chupke Chupke"
saw stellar performances by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bhaduri, Om Prakash and Asrani. And who can forget Dharmendra's antics in the film! "We have made many changes in the script and it's not a remake it is an adaptation of 'Chupke Chupke'," said Shukla. The rest of the cast is yet to be decided. "Writer Sajid and Farhad have written the script and the film is in its final draft stage. It's a fun-filled film. Once we finish the script, we will finalise the other actors as well," he said.
Filmmaker Prakash Jha wants to tap the power of digital media and says he will promote his forthcoming political drama "Satyagraha" through socialnetworking sites, a platform that has witnessed outpourings on some of the major public outrages. Inspired by the current situation in the country, "Satyagraha" shows the uprising of the middle class against a corrupt system. Amitabh Bachchan plays an activist and his role is said to be modeled on Anna Hazare, while Kareena Kapoor will be
seen as a journalist. Ajay Devgan and Arjun Rampal too play pivotal roles in the movie releasing August 23. "In the recent past, any form of public outrage has been (expressed) mainly through the social media space. You cannot ignore the power of the digital medium today," Prakash Jha said in a statement. "We are a young nation and the digital platform is soon going to become as powerful as print or television, so we want to explore the medium judiciously," he added.

Police has taken Sooraj Pancholi, son of Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab under custody after the six page suicide note was discovered from Jiahs room. The letter clearly signifies Jiah was heartbroken and shattered after Sooraj cut all ties from her. Her mother Rabiya Khan revealed to the police that her daughter Jiah was in a live in relationship with Sooraj for a year. Police arrested Sooraj for allegedly abetting her suicide. Rabiya Khan also revealed that Sooraj tortured her daughter physically and mentally. Follow in her letter mentioned threat, assault and rape and now police will charge Sooraj guilty of all the harassment he meted to the actress. "Rabiya also told us Jiah was completely shattered when Suraj sent her a 'break-up' bouquet. This was one of the reasons behind the young actress' extreme step. Suraj had promised to marry Jiah," the officer said. However, police has not found any evidence of Aditya Pancholi in this
entire affair. Police is now looking for the hospital in which Jiah aborted her child. As Jiah Khan has mentioned the word rape, police will slap sexual assault charge against the accused. Meanwhile, Rabiya tweeted "my daughter had bruises on her jaw. She was hit badly that pushed her to the end path. I wish I was there. How dare he (Suraj) hit her!" Sooraj has been booked under IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide). His domestic help would again be called for recording of statement to confirm the evidence gathered by the police in Jiah Khans suicide case. Jiah Khan committed suicide at her residence on June 5th when her mother and sisters went out. She hanged herself to the ceiling fan of her room. At first, it was assessed that the actress committed suicide for failing career and troubled love affair but now all the evidence is pointing towards her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi who betrayed her in love and left her alone.

And Big B, who starred in the previous film, will also be part of the sequel. Incidentally, while only Amitabh Bachchan has been retained from the original cast for the sequel, Boman Irani will be an addition to the list, as the actor apparently is slated to play a negative role in the film. According to sources, Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, who starred in the first film, will not be appearing in the sequel, to be helmed by Nitish Tiwari. Says Chopra, `The film will go on the floors in November and Amit uncle is part of the project. The film is very close to our hearts and we are excited. We are still in the process of casting a child artiste.` Having worked with the Chopra banner before, Bhushan is glad to have come on board for the project. He states, `Unfortunately, over the last two-three years, Ravi Chopra has been unwell and the production house went through a bad phase. They were keen to revive the banner with the sequel. Amitji playing Bhootnath will be an exciting watch.`

Most people celebrate significant birthdays with a cake, or even a party, but two Scottish women decided to celebrate by making and starring in their own Bollywood movie. Despite having no previous experience of the film industry, Karyn Watt and Karen Havranek have found themselves with an unlikely success on their hands. Their 35-minute short film, Hanki Panki, has already been seen at the Cannes film festival and now it is now being screened in Edinburgh, to raise money for charity. Watt says: "We have been going to India for years and we were having a big fat birthday. "We thought we could have a party or we could do something more exotic." The fact that one of their friends in India is actor and director Nilesh Malhotra, a veteran of India's film industry, turned what was originally going to be a "home movie" shot in the style of the Blair Witch Project into a Bollywood extravaganza. The pair scripted a romantic comedy about two women from Scotland who go to India to enter a baking competition and end up marrying Maharajas. Director Malhotra says: "I must tell you, they don't have experience but they have done a brilliant job in this movie. "It is something different. If you see this movie you can get some Scottish humour, as well as Bollywood dancing, music. Everything you will find in this:

Havranek says: "I think the highlight for us was over breakfast we got to chat to John Hurt. He was delightful." This week they will screen the film in Edinburgh for family and friends, many of whom star alongside them. They are hoping to have a similar fundraising premiere in Mumbai in September and they are already thinking about a sequel. "Who knows there might be more Hanki Panki. You can never have too much," says Watt.

Whether you plan to stay long-term or just pass through, here are ten essential trips to make in your leisure time. Because Switzerland is a small country, its attractions are near each other and can be reached quite easily. Mountain resorts, lakes, forests, castles, museums, and ancient and modern architecture make this federal republic an excellent tourist destination. With its low crime rate, it is also very safe for tourists. 1) The Jungfrau Region shores of Lake Geneva. Walk by the lakeside and explore the Chillon Castle, or take a tour of the tower, courtyards, dungeons, and rooms of this eleventh-century castle, the most frequently visited historical building in Switzerland where its numerous rooms house weaponry, frescoes, and furniture. The castle can be reached by walking along the lakefront or taking the train or trolley bus. 3) Fasnacht Spring Carnival, Basel Be sure to visit Basel, Switzerland's second largest city for the Fasnacht Spring carnival. Its world-famous three-day carnival features participants in colourful costumes and masks parading in the streets. The carnival starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, and cafes and bars are open all night as confetti, sweets, and flowers are thrown to the crowd. 4) Swiss National Park, Zernez The Swiss Natural Park is 169 square kilometres of mountains and woodland. It is home to a variety of wildlife such as large red deer, chamois, ibexes, and marmots. Walk around its trails and admire its breathtaking views. 5) Geneva Hugging the shores of lovely Lake Geneva, this city is the third biggest in the country. You can find the world's tallest fountain, enchanting museums, and fine restaurants here. For those with a turn towards alternative arts, Geneva is a place not to be missed. 6) The Matterhorn, Zermatt The most famous peak in the Alps, the Matterhorn in Zermatt stands 4,478 meters high. Mountaineers flock to this town to conquer this technically difficult peak, and Zermatt also offers skiing and beautiful views. There are also non-skiing activities, best restaurants and lots of energetic nightlife for visitors to enjoy.

2013 Suzuki Grand Vitara With only minor front-end changes, the Suzuki Grand Vitara returns for the 2013 model year as one of the few crossovers to tout its off-road driving skills ahead of its safety scores or standard features. The Grand Vitara isn't really showing its age--it's still an attractively designed SUV but it's an older vehicle based on the last-generation Chevy Equinox and former Pontiac Torrent (like it, trivia fans?). It has wagon proportions, but a real four-wheel-drive system with a low range and frame rails supporting its unibody construction. It's a distinctive piece, much less like today's Equinox and Terrain, CR-V, and Escape, and a few steps toward the trails even beyond the Subaru Outback. The look is simple, and clean, and after all these years, it's growing faint in memory. The balanced look offends no one; it's no Compass. The interior's a fine place to work, with well-grained plastics and tight-fitting pieces, like the ones we've complimented in the Kizashi sedan and other Suzuki products. The cabin's a few steps ahead of the small Jeeps, the CR-V, and the equal of the Subaru. There's a single engine offered in the Grand Vitara, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with either a five-speed manual or an ancient four-speed automatic, and comes in either rear-drive or fourwheel-drive form. As such, it's no more than adequate in acceleration, and highway fuel economy is in the low to mid-20s--once very good numbers, now hugely behind the curve set by the latest Escape and CR-V. Handling is fair, meaning you won't find much to complain about in ride quality (though choppy pavement can be troublesome), but you won't be attacking a canyon road in the Grand Vitara either. In the Limited model, an upgraded 4-mode 4WD system is available, further improving off-road ability with high and low transfer gear
Autos
ratios. The Grand Vitara's cabin is long, providing good leg room at all positions, but narrow, meaning shoulder room in the back seat is scarce and cargo room is disappointing. The side-opening tail gate doesn't help the cargo-area's utility, either, putting the Grand Vitara toward the back of the class in this regard. Safety gear is a hit-and-miss affair: all the expected standard equipment, including front side and side-curtain airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes, but despite that, the Grand Vitara doesn't rank at the top of any safety tests. Still, the IIHS rates the 2012 Grand Vitara its highest overall value of "good," and the NHTSA scores it at four stars of rollover resistance. In terms of features and options, the Vitara packs in a lot of value for its sub-$20,000 starting price. In fact, the base model comes with navigation, automatic climate control, keyless start and entry, power doors and locks, and
an XM-compatible audio system for its starting price of $19,499. Upgrades available include real-time safety camera, weather, Google search, and
more; a premium seven-speaker audio system; Bluetooth hands-free calling, and up to 18-inch alloy wheels in higher trims.

room temperature (20C) for two days it loses half of its vitamin C. Vegetables are usually snap frozen very soon after they are picked. Special machinery is used to get the produce to -18C in minutes. The nutrients are 'frozen in' during this process, meaning you can quite easily have more vitamins in a frozen vegetable than in its 'fresh' counterpart. But there is more to fruit and veggies than just vitamins. One of the biggest reasons we get people to eat fruit and veggies is to get their fiber. The fiber content doesn't deteriorate easily which means that week-old fresh veggies still have value despite lowered vitamin levels. If it's a choice of eating old vegetables
or no veggies at all, old veggies are fine. Preparation is key How you cook your veggies is far more important than whether they are fresh or frozen. Boiling veggies in a large amount of water for a long time lets the vitamins leach out into the water. Regardless of whether you are cooking fresh or frozen veggies, use as little water as you can and cook them for a short time. Steaming or microwaving veggies are much better options than boiling. And if you are using frozen vegetables, check the label of the packet. Usually they just contain the vegetable, but sometimes, particularly if there is a sauce, they may contain added salt and sugar.
Chamomile is a herb that comes from a flowering plant of the daisy family. Both fresh and dried, chamomile flowers have been used to create teas for centuries to cure a number of health problems. The active ingredient in chamomile essential oil is bisabolol, which has a number of anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Calming chamomile Chamomile tea is a well-known herbal tea that has medicinal value. It can soothe and act as a muscle relaxant. Its also a recommended remedy for insomnia; drinking a cup of the tea before going to bed can help, as chamomile has mild sedative properties. Warm chamomile tea is also a cure for an irritated tummy. Daily consumption of this brew can help slow down the progress of hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and diabetic complications. Beauty booster Chamomile is rich in antioxidants and is considered to be anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial in nature. Hence, it is believed to keep acne and boils under check, though there is no scientific data to support this yet. Since it is anti-

A variety of creams, lotions and oils are available for the body. A lemonturmeric cream has been helpful in treating dark patches on the body, like the inner thighs, elbows and knees. It helps to soften the skin and also lightens skin colour over a period of time. You would also need a rough towel to give the skin a rub, after applying oils or soap. This helps to smoothen rough skin and also improves blood circulation to the skin surface.
the dried mint leaves. Mix them with a little honey and apply on the skin. Removes tan and produces an even colour tone. Honey moisturises and softens the skin. Another problem area are armpits, which can also become dark. This happens mainly due to shaving or the use of hair removal creams. Both these methods can cause the skin to darken. Shaving does not remove hair by the roots. The hair growth also becomes harder, thicker and coarser, leading to a dark look. Hair removal creams are also known to cause skin discolouration. The best option of hair removal for the under-arm area is waxing. The wax that is usually made for hair removal contains lemon juice and sugar. This combination actually helps to lighten skin colour. Waxing also removes hair by the roots. This is said to gradually lessen hair growth. For dark armpits, mix besan (gram flour), curd, lemon juice and little haldi (turmeric) into a paste. Apply it at least three times a week. Wash it off after half an hour. Take ripe papaya pulp and add lemon juice. Apply this on the area and rub the skin with it for a few minutes. Wash off with plain water.

Before your bath, apply oil on the area and massage it into the skin. This helps to soften the skin. Sesame seed oil, olive oil or even sunflower oil may be used. While bathing, go easy on the soap and avoid very hot water. Give the area a gentle rub with the rough towel. Immediately after your bath, apply a body lotion while the skin is still damp. If the skin on the elbows and knees is excessively dry, use a thicker cream on them. Massage the cream into the skin on these areas. Body scrubs and packs also help. Try sesame seeds, dried mint leaves and honey. They have a remarkably rejuvenating effect on the skin. Crush the sesame seeds coarsely and powder

Association president, Vijay Singh has sent a strong warning to his side ahead of the tournament this week. Fittest players in the Nadroga team will only survive in my team for the first tournament of the year and I have told the players to shape up or ship out because this is going to be 90 minutes of matches and the fittest teams will survive, Singh said. can be possible in the match, Singh said. According to Singh the team has been in the development mode for the past several years and he believes the players have been developed for the future. The players who have been playing this year have come from the development process which was led by the former president and now the players have fully matured and they will be on the go this year. I have a dream which is to aim to appear in the semifinal in the tournament, Singh added. Singh is calling on the fans to turn in big numbers to witness the side play Ba at ANZ Stadium in Suva.
