Canola Farmers
By SARAH DALRYMPLE
P
en-Dale Farms was
buzzing with canola
famers, both young and
old, on Wednesday, June
5th. About 50 farmers from
dif erent areas in Mani-
toba came out to get some
advice on seeding canola,
the type of fertilizer to use,
and the dos and donts of
Canola farming.
Upon arrival, we were
asked to wear plastic
boots in order to prevent
soil born diseases, such
as club root, from spread-
ing. Kristen Phillips, the
Agronomist for the Canola
Council of Canada, went
over the proper methods
for sanitation eforts, in-
cluding the plastic boo-
ties. You should wash
your vehicles in between
each feld and make sure
no soil is left on. Never
drive your truck into the
feld and try and sanitize
your shoes in between
felds.
Club root is a conta-
gious, soil born disease
that was at the forefront of
more than one discussion.
Te Canola Council has
been very proactive this
year as they have found
two conf rmed cases of
club root in Manitoba, and
six f elds that contained
the DNA for the disease.
Tey have continued to
perform disease surveys
throughout Manitoba, and
sample f elds at random.
Te last conf rmed case of
club root in Manitoba was
in 2005. In Manitoba, the
incidence and severity of
the infection is quite low,
compared to areas in Al-
berta.
Andrew Dalgarno,
the owner of the feld,
was quick to explain that,
Only you can prevent
what happens on your
own farm.
Some other key pieces
of advice for the Canola
farmers was to seed shal-
low, about half an inch,
seed early, and be careful
with fertilizer placement.
Phillips explained how
each farmer has to know
how fast their equipment
can go while maintaining
the uniform placement of
each seed and the amount
of fertilizer needed. You
only get one chance at
this; you might as well get
it right! she fnished.

P
rairie Mountain Health (PMH) continues to
have the Joint Health Centre proposal as their
number one capital project priority for the entire
region. Tis has been going on for seven to eight
years and now PMH is getting closer to dealing with
the provincial government, says Ray Orr, mayor of
Minnedosa. While the proposal has still not been
approved by the provincial government, it has been
registered as PMHs number one priority.
Ten R.M.s have already signed on to support
this project. Orr looked at the benefts of a regional
health centre, located as close as Franklin. A re-
gional hospital will bring more physicians and peo-
ple to this area. Also, having an equipped facility
will help to provide a better health service. I def-
nitely support it.
A Municipal Steering Committee has been talk-
ing to communities in order to understand how they
will invest in this project. Any major capital proj-
ect requires a community to give 10% of the value
upfront or 20% over time. However, Penny Gilson
replied, Te total amount is capped at six million
dollars. Tis entire project is estimated at 60 million
dollars.
If this goes through, we may be required to
give some funds, explained Orr, When the time
comes, we will see if it will afect taxes, or if we can
organize a fundraiser. First, we will have to see how
much it will cost.
Tere are three other regional hospitals located
in Dauphin, Swan River, and Brandon. A regional
hospital in Franklin would remove some of the
strain on the Brandon hospital while maintaining a
population large enough to support it.

ith the Financial Plan for the
Town of Minnedosa fnalized, lo-
cal tax paying property owners are cu-
rious what efect this years budget will
have on their tax bill. Here are four ex-
amples of tax increases for residential
properties.
For a property with an assessed val-
ue of $89,500, the property owner can
expect a tax bill of $1,036.29. Tis is an
increase of approximately $40.00 over
last years property taxes.
Te most commonly valued prop-
erty used for comparison is one valued
at around the $100,000 mark. An actual
property from this years tax roll with an
assessed value of $101,800 can expect
to experience a tax increase of approxi-
mately $45.00 over last year for a total
tax amount of $1,261.35.
Te third scenario is for a residen-
tial property with an assessed value of
$140,300. Taxes on this property will
increase to $1,964.94 from $1,902.87
in 2012. Tis is an increase of approxi-
mately $60.00.
Te f nal example includes a prop-
erty assessed at $210,500. Te ratepayer
of this property can expect an increase
of approximately $90.00 for a total tax
bill of $3,248.21 in 2013.
2013 property tax bills will be sent
out this summer and are due by the end
of September.
Next year, 2014, is a reassessment
year. Property owners should have re-
ceived a 2014 Real Property Assessment
Notice in the mail recently explaining
how their assessed property value will
change for 2014. Te previous assess-
ment (current value) is based on the
property value as of April 1st, 2010. Next
years assessment is based on the prop-
erty value as of April 1st, 2012.

Canola farming, and is one

Canada. He has also partic-

in 43 diferent countries,
including Nicaragua, India,

the most of the opportu-
nity to meet and talk with
him, discussing their farms,
seeder types, and individu-
al practices.
After the f nal presen-
tation, one thing was made
clear. Multiple stresses
drive up the mortality rate
of the seeds within each
crop, explained Derwin
Hammond. According to
the panel, these stresses
can include harsh seeding
conditions, the amount of
fertilizer, and the amount
of seeds per square me-
ter. Te average mortality
rate of seed in Manitoba is
about 50%, said Phillips.
T e panel encouraged
farmers to reduce stress on
the seed.

Dear Editor,
Canadians count on the
government to make sure
the food we eat is safe,
yet when it comes to the
inspection system, MP
Robert Sopuck and the
Conservative government
refuse to own up to their
own mistakes.
An independent re-
view of last years XL Foods
E. coli outbreak, which led
to the largest beef recall in
Canadian history, found
that the outbreak was en-
tirely preventable. It found
that there was not a strong
food safety culture in the
Canadian Food Inspection
Agency at all levels. Staf
were inadequately trained
and inspection practices
werent good enough. Our
government failed.
Many of these prob-
lems would have been
f xed if the Conservatives
had followed through on
their commitment to im-
plement the recommen-
dations of the Weatherill
Report on the listeriosis
contamination at Maple
Leaf Foods in 2008, a seri-
ous shortcoming they re-
fuse to admit.
Te Conservatives
claim they have been bol-
stering our food inspec-
tion system and that they
have added 20% to the
personnel. In fact, docu-
ments reveal they plan
to cut hundreds of food
safety and inspection staf
at CFIA, which will reduce,
not strengthen our food
safety system.
Tey also failed to im-
plement the fnal recom-
mendation of the Weath-
erill Report, which called
for an independent, com-
prehensive resource audit
to ensure that the CFIA
had the resources, human
and otherwise to carry out
its mandate. Even the for-
mer President of the CFIA,
Carole Swan, said that
what they did do was not
the audit the Weatherill re-
port called for. Tat could
have prevented many of
the problems.
T is slapdash ap-
proach allowed problems
at XL Foods to go un-
checked for years, allowing
the E. coli contamination
that caused 18 Canadians
to get sick, cost $16-27 mil-
lion to the beef industry
and undermined consum-
er confdence in our food
safety system.
Will Mr. Sopuck and
the Conservatives actu-
ally implement the recom-
mended changes to food
inspection to prevent a
third major food crisis on
their watch? Dont hold
your breathwhen I asked
in Question Period, they
refused to commit to an
implementation date.
Yours sincerely,

da Agriculture Critic

S
ummer is just around
the corner, and if you
are looking for something
fun to do, why not try geo-
caching. Geocaching is an
outdoor treasure hunting
game using a GPS enabled
device. And the best part,
there are geocaches locat-
ed right here, in Minnedo-
sa.
On May 3rd, 2000, a
GPS enthusiast Dave Ul-
mer wanted to test the
accuracy of the recently
updated Navigation sys-
tem. He hid a target in
the woods and posted it
online. Soon, GPS users
were using their own GPS
devices to locate the tar-
get. Tings continued to
progress as the challenges
have become more dif -
cult. Now geocaching has
become a global phenom-
enon.
Te idea is simple,
hide a container out in the
wilderness, post the coor-
dinates of the container
and wait for someone to
fnd it. Tere is really only
one rule, if you take some
stuf then leave some stuf.
From Germany to
Canada, there are millions
of geocaches that you can
fnd. Some are admittedly
more dif cult than others.
Tey can be located in a
parking lot, at the end of
a long hike, underwater,
or on the side of the street.
You also have over a dozen
diferent types of geocach-
es. Some involve puzzles to
fgure out the coordinates,
while others are just clues
that lead you to the real
geocache.
Because they vary in
size and appearance, you
have to keep your eyes
open. Tey can be in clear
plastic containers or hid-
den in secret compart-
ments of rocks or canisters.
In the cache you will see
a logbook or log sheet for
you to write in, saying that
you found it. Larger caches
may contain some items
for you to take with you,
but you must remember to
leave something in return
for the next person that
fnds it.
Some containers may
even include what geo-
cachers call a trackable.
T ey are a geocaching
game piece that includes
a unique code so that you
are able to log its move-
ment. Once you fnd one of
these items, it is important
that you take it and put it
into another geocache that
you f nd. Some of these
items have travelled hun-
dreds and thousands of
miles, heading from cache
to cache.
T ere are quite a
few geocaches located in
Minnedosa. One is located
near Uncle Toms restau-
rant, while three more can
be found along the beach
road. You can also fnd
them in Onanole and Dau-
phin, as well as Brandon.

T
he Manitoba Junior
Hockey League held its
annual bantam draft on the
morning of Sunday, June
9th. Te Neepawa Natives
held the No. 1 overall selec-
tion and used the pick on
Strathclair product Morgan
Geekie.
Geekie, the son of for-
mer Brandon Wheat Kings
player Craig Geekie, is
listed at 5-feet-11 and 153
pounds. Te forward spent
last season with the Yellow-
head Chiefs AAA bantam
team where he netted 20
goals and 40 points in 41
games.
Hes a skilled cen-
tre, said Natives general
manager Myles Cathcart.
He plays well in both
ends, works hard and is
very skilled. To top it of,
hes basically local too.
With the f rst pick in
the second round, Neepa-
wa wound up selecting
blueliner Skyler Tor-
steinson from Winnipeg.
Torsteinson is a right-
handed defenceman who
spent this past year with
the Winnipeg Hawks AAA
bantam Division 1 team.
We were surprised he
was still around, said Cath-
cart. Big defenceman --
kind of one of those players
who you can build a team
around. Good quality lead-
ership skills and hes hard to
play against. We were very
happy to select him as well.
With the f rst pick in
the third round, the Na-
tives chose forward Dayton
Heino from Minnedosa.
Heino, like Geekie, spent
last season with the Chiefs
AAA bantam squad. Cath-
cart says Heino few under
the radar mainly because
of an injury he sufered at
the end of the year which
saw the youngster miss
some time on the ice.
We were very hap-
py to get him (Heino)
as well, said Cathcart.
In the fourth round,
Neepawa wound up se-
lecting defenceman Grif n
Chwaliboga from Arborg,
while in round fve, chose
blueliner Clark Nachtigall
from Brandon. Te Natives
wrapped up their selections
by taking goaltender Mitch-
el Adamyk from Winnipeg
in the sixth and fnal round.
I think all in all, we ba-
sically got what we came for
as all the guys that we got
were on our list, so were
quite happy, Cathcart con-
cluded.
Heino has also been
selected as a player on the
16U Team Manitoba base-
ball team.
Heino selected for provincial
baseball and Natives hockey
Minnedosas Dayton Heino has been selected to
play on the provincial 16U baseball team as
well as with the Neepawa Natives hockey team
in the recent MJHL bantam draft.

Te group is made up of 26
Grade 7 and 8 students and

three years. Tey began as
an anti-bullying campaign
but evolved into a social
justice group with a focus
on childrens rights.
We Day is an educa-
tional event that includes a
year-long We Act program
for both primary and sec-
ondary schools. It begins
with a free event at the Win-
nipeg MTS Center, orga-
nized by Free the Children,
and continues on at the
students school. Tis year
TCS decided to organize a
mini version of We Day, so
every student could attend.
T e afternoon included
speeches from students at
TCS, members of LS!N, and
the Principal, James Shep-
pard, and Minnedosas
Mary Dalton. Minnedo-
sas Citizens Helping All

presentation, focusing on
the power that a student
can have in infuencing the
world around them. Tey
talked about their local

ovy fnished her speech by
quoting Ghandi, You must
be the change you wish to
see in the world.
Next, Brandi T omp-
son gave a speech about
her work with the Flying
Doctors of Canada. She
went on two diferent mis-
sions, one to Nicaragua
and another to El Savaldor,
and worked as a volunteer
x-ray and ultrasound tech-
nician. In addition to the
many motivational speak-
ers, there was also dancing
and singing, including the
famous We Day dance.
Colby Pilling showed
of his tap dancing skills,
and gave a presentation
on his experience on the
Canadian Tap Dancing
Teams trip to Germany.
While in Germany, he was
able to compete with 42
Nations around the world.
He told the audience,
When I think about We
Day, I think about becom-
ing an active kid in my so-
ciety.
Stevie Onyshko, a
member of LS!N, sang the
cheerful song, Sir Nick-
etty Nox, while High school
dancers, Carlene Dmytriw,
Melissa Clark, Tayler Mc-
Tavish, and Abigail Turner,
came together to dance
for change. Te afternoon
ended on a high note with
the musical stylings of lo-
cal band, Duly Noted.

Wash on Saturday, June
8th, with donations going
towards Free the Children.
In addition to events like
these, LS!N has helped out
with pancake suppers at
the United Church, raised
money for TCS foster kids,
and various Free the Chil-
dren Campaigns. As for
Mini We Day, Kerry Mor-
rice replies, Te kids al-
ready want to do it again.
So far, it looks like there

of Beta Sigma Phi honoured Joyce Glasgow
for her membership in the organization for 60
years.
Joyce joined a Winnipeg chapter in 1953 and
when she and her husband moved to Minnedosa
she transferred to the Lambda Chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi and has been an active member since.
The chapter members joined to congratu-
late Joyce for her long dedication to the Soror-
ity where she was presented with a yellow rose
and a new pin for her collection. This is a new
recognition for Beta Sigma Phi and the words
of the presentation were very appropriate for
Joyce and members that have been in the vari-
ous chapters for that period of time.
Beta Sigma Phi was founded in 1931 in the
State of Kansas and there are chapters in many
countries around the world. Minnedosas first
chapter was started in 1950 and many women
have been involved since. At present Minnedo-
sa has two chapters, Preceptor Zeta and Xi The-
ta, and many community students, and projects
in Minnedosa have been assisted by these chap-
ters. Congratulations Joyce!

A
new streak of colour
has been added to
Minnedosa from mem-
bers of Communities in
Bloom, marking the arrival
of summer. Minnedosa
Communities in Bloom is
a volunteer based group
that works to foster pride,
environmental responsi-
bility and beauty in our
town, with the help of a
little friendly competition.
Communities in
Bloom (CIB) is also na-
tionally based, with all mu-
nicipalities across Canada
judged annually. It began
in 1995 with 29 communi-
ties, and has spread across
Canada to include over
800 communities. In the
past, Minnedosa won fve
blooms for the provincial
portion of the competi-
tion, and has now been
invited to attend the Na-
tional Judging Category.
Te Judges are set to arrive
mid-August and are spe-
cially trained volunteers.
Tey will be looking at:
Floral Displays, Turf and
Groundcover, Landscaped
Areas, Natural and Cultur-
al Heritage Conservation,
Tidiness, Environmental
Awareness, Tree/Urban
Forest Management, and
Community Involvement.
In order to prepare
for the judges arrival, CIB
will be picking a yard from
each quadrant of town, as
well as a business in and
out of town, for business/
yard of the week. Mem-
bers from the committee
will go around and pick a
yard that has been taken
care of particularly well, or
look for any new additions.
Business/yard of the week
will run for six weeks be-
ginning at the end of June.
Communities in
Bloom has also decided to
add a new feature to our
town this year. Many may
have seen the old agricul-
tural plow located on the
Main Street boulevard be-
tween Cornerstone Grill
and Minnedosa Credit
Union. We had bought
metal planters, so we
thought to add a piece of
machinery to bring it all
together, explained Don-
na Dillabough, Because
Minnedosa is a farming
community, we thought
about the addition of the
plow.
Minnedosas Commu-
nities in Bloom has already
completed a town-wide
clean up this summer,
with another scheduled at
the end of July. Tey have
also been able to partner
with Rivers Edge Recre-
ation Park and assist with
cleaning and maintenance
of the park. Te rest of
the summer will be spent
maintaining the gardens
around town for when the
CIB judges arrive.

Dear Reena,
I am making a large
batch of egg salad. What is
the easiest way to remove
the peel from hard boiled
eggs? Sam
Dear Sam,
After eggs are boiled;
set them into a bowl of
cold water and remove
the peel while the eggs are
submersed.
Dear Reena,
Any suggestions for
getting rid of woodpeck-
ers? Tey are waking us up
early in the morning and
very noisy. Jan
Dear Jan,
Te sooner you can
act the better before
woodpeckers makes your
home, their home. His
mission, to fnd food. Be-
gin by having your roof
inspected for infesta-
tions of bugs. Next close
any holes on the roof.
Place aluminum fashing
over the areas where the
woodpeckers are peck-
ing. Woodpeckers wont
like the new sound or the
shininess of the metal. If
this is not an option hang
something shiny in the
area such as aluminum
pie plates, old C.Ds or
Mylar balloons or Mylar
tape. If shiny objects are
too unsightly, cover the
area with plastic netting.
Dear Reena,
Is there a quick and
easy way to clean hard wa-
ter deposits on a double
stainless steel sink? I guess
I have been so busy that I
didnt realize till now how
bad it looks! If I can get it
cleaned up, in the future I
will have to make a habit
of wiping it dry each night
to prevent this from reoc-
curring. Melvin
Dear Melvin,
Toroughly clean the
sink using an abrasive
pad, dish soap and water.
Wipe the inside with olive
oil to leave your sink look-
ing like new!

T
his spring most grow-
ers experienced some
of the best seeding con-
ditions we have seen in
at least the past three to
four years. Tis has now
been followed by almost
ideal conditions for crop
emergence where dry top
soils have received suf-
f cient scattered showers
for emergence and yet not
enough to cause any sig-
nifcant crusting problems.
Te result has been some
of the best crop emergence
we have seen in at least the
past three to four grow-
ing seasons as well. Even
the winds seemed to be
cooperating recently al-
lowing for some excellent
day long spraying without
any of the excessively wet
soils that we have become
accustomed to over the
last number of years. Te
only blemish to date has
been the series of frost
events that occurred late
last week that damaged
some early seeded canola
however even these felds
seem to be now recover-
ing after recent showers.
Te quick pace to seed-
ing will mean most spray-
ing will also need to be
completed promptly and
should be close to 5075%
complete by this weekend.
Te moisture situation has
remained adequate pri-
marily due to the cooler
seasonal average tempera-
tures however we will need
at some point to reach that
critical three inch level
in June in order to bufer
some of the warmer tem-
peratures likely to be seen
in July and August.
Winter Wheat
Vernalization
Te remaining win-
ter wheat acres have now
reached the jointing stage
of development where the
frst node can now be de-
tected on the lower stem.
It is at this point where
one can now examine the
seed head by closely dis-
secting the stem just above
this frst node. Seed head
formation is not typically
a concern in winter wheat
however this year the ma-
jority of the surviving win-
ter wheat germinated this
spring bringing into ques-
tion as to whether or not
the spring emerging crop
had vernalized allowing
the crop to produce a seed
head or just remain veg-
etative. Upon careful ex-
amination we are indeed
fnding seed head forma-
tion meaning that the crop
experienced a suf cient
cold period this spring to
vernalize.
Alfalfa Weevil
Emergence
T e delayed cooler
spring has slowed the
emergence and movement
of the alfalfa weevil how-
ever after recent warmer
temperatures we are now
beginning to see their
numbers increase over
this past week. Te larval
stage of the Alfalfa Weevil
is the most important as
it causes the most dam-
age. Te larvae will eat the
tender leaf from between
the veins which gives the
plant a skeletonised, grey-
ish look; they will also feed
on the tender fower buds
as they emerge. Feed-
ing can start in May but is
most pronounced in June.
Most people recognize a
problem when patches
of the f eld fail to bloom
or the plants start to take
on a greyish colour in ap-
pearance. For most forage
producers, the best control
will be to harvest the crop
as soon as feeding dam-
age appears. Te process
of harvesting kills many of
the adults and larvae. For
optimum yields, try to wait
until bud or early bloom if
possible. If the plants do
not begin to show signs of
re-growth within a week
after cutting, then careful
examination of the stub-
ble, soil and leaf litter for
larvae and adults is nec-
essary. While insecticide
spraying is an option, it
is costly and damaging to
many benefcial insect in-
cluding the honey bee, but
may be necessary to save
the stand.

T
ulip f owers are more than just
colourful and pretty. Howev-
er, some might disagree after see-
ing over 800 tulips bloom in Tom and
Evelyn Delgatys garden this week.
Tulips, f rst grown in the Middle East,
tend to be associated with the Dutch cul-
ture. Tere, they are considered precious
and connected to imagination and love.
Despite the fact that tulips can be grown in
a large variety of climates, they live a ter-
ribly short life. Te blooms only last three
to seven days after growing extremely fast.
Tese tulips have continued to bloom for
about two weeks now. I think the colder
weather has kept them blooming longer,
Evelyn speculated, But I am just enjoying
every minute of it!
