Using formulae

A formula can be used to help us solve calculations easily. Most common used
are SUM, MIN, MAX, and AVERAGE.

The table below shows the results of a survey to find out what pets people had,
and if they had pets, how many they owned.

We need to use a formula to count the total number of pets.

Use the formula

Person Cat Dog Bird Fish Reptile Other None
1 1 =SUM(startRange:endRange)
2 3
3 1 e.g.
4 1

7 1 1 B19:
8 1
9 2 =SUM(B8:B17)

Min, Max and Average
Like SUM, we can use other formulas to display different types of numbers.

MIN : Shows the smallest number from a selection

MAX : Shows the largest number from a selection
AVERAGE : Shows the average number from a selection

Charts in a spreadsheet
Sometimes we use graphs to help understand data more easily.

Using the spreadsheet we used in question 1, we can use the totals to create a
chart.

The chart quickly shows us what pets people own and how many have a certain
type of animal.

I think that the bar chart displays the information better as it clearly shows the
amount of pets of that type when the pie chart only shows how much compared
to other pets.
