the Kinder Morgan spill of light crude oil discovered Wednesday evening, was contained after 12 barrels or about 2,000 litres leaked out of the pipeline on crown land along the right-of-way near Kingsvale. the oil spilled while the company was doing maintenance work and the maintenance crew turned off the pipeline when the leak was discovered. Repairs were under way yesterday. Kinder Morgan said there was no immediate safety concern for local residents and precautions are being taken to ensure continued public safety. the pipeline was shut down to prevent additional oil from being released into the environment and early on after the discover, the company contacted area residents. a Kinder Morgan oil spill response team of up to 24 people was at the scene within a couple of hours, but company spokesman andy Galarnyk said it is unclear how long oil had been leaking. "My understanding was that the control centre did not receive an alarm, so in terms of whether it was a very slow leak that just bubbled to the surface, that's part of the investigation that's underway at this point." the trans Mountain line ships 300,000 barrels per day of various petroleum products from alberta to the Lower Mainland and Washington State. Last month, Kinder Morgan submitted its project description to the National Energy Board that would almost triple the capacity, and include shipment of diluted bitumen, a heavier, molasses-like oil that critics claim is harder to clean up.

One person was arrested on marijuana trafficking charges in Merritt on June 9, and a video surveillance system was seized from the home at a property on the 3000 block of Figlenski Rd near Merritt. Other arrests were made 2 in Kelowna and 5 in Regina after an 18-month RCMP investigation into organized crime. Raids in both provinces have netted $120,000, 1.5 kilograms of cocaine, 1.1 kgs of marijuana and several weapons. Police say 8 suspects face charges ranging from trafficking to participating in a criminal organization, and more charges are expected as the investigation progresses.
