SWISS starts 2011 with a rise in passenger numbers

A total of 1 116 016 travellers flew with SWISS in January, 6.3% more than in the same month last year (2010: 1 050 275). The airline operated 9.2% more flights in Europe in the month: 11 245, compared to 10 298 a year earlier. Intercontinental services were increased, too: the 1 398 flights performed were an 8.2% rise on the 1 292 of January 2010. All in all, SWISS operated 12 643 flights during the month, up 9.1% on the 11 590 of the prior-year period. Systemwide seat load factor for the month stood at 75.8%, a slight 0.7percentage-point decline on the 76.5% of January 2010. Seat load factor for European services slipped 2.5 percentage points to 62.6%, while the 82.6% intercontinental seat load factor was a slight improvement on the 82.5% of the same month last year. Systemwide, SWISS offered 12.5% more capacity than it had in January 2010 in available-seat-kilometre terms. Total traffic volume (in revenue passenger-kilometres) was an 11.5% improvement on the prior-year period. The strong year-on-year growth is primarily attributable to the reductions in production effected in 2009 and 2010 in response to the economic downturn. SWISS WorldCargo posted a cargo load factor (by volume) of 78.0% for January a slight 1.4-percentage-point improvement on its prioryear level.
