The Centre for Insurance and Risk Management at the Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai, India, is currently accepting internship applications for its 2009 Total Immersion Program in Finance and Development (TIP/FD) Background: The Center for Insurance and Risk Management (CIRM) at the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Chennai, India is a unique effort to create a think tank and product development skills to design innovative scalable and sustainable micro insurance and risk management solutions for low income households at the Bottom of the Pyramid. As a sectoral resource our main focus is on the verticals of Health Risk, Catastrophe Risk, Agri Risk Management, Social Security and Training and Financial Literacy. The Centre has a strong collaboration with aggregators like MFIs, and works closely with Governments, the Insurance Regulator-IRDA, Insurers, Re insurers, Banks, Multilateral bodies like the World Bank, ILO, the academia and researchers from MIT, Harvard and Yale. We engage in creating knowledge in the nascent micro insurance sector and filling in the gaps and providing linkages to the stake holders in creating an enabling risk management environment, with policy advocacy as a major component of our work. We also envisage creation of a much needed sector data warehouse to catalyze actuarially sound product development. Focus Areas: Projects undertaken at the Centre can be placed into six major categories namely: Multiple health insurance products - Health Ecosystem Project - Coverage Specific Health Insurance - Government Collaborated Health Projects Livelihood - Weather Insurance- Agriculture - Livestock - Fisheries Catastrophe - Flood Insurance - Multi Drought Insurance Social Security - Micro Pensions Insurance Literacy and Training Sector Specific Initiatives - Insurance Compendium - Maps of Micro Insurance

Current Projects: CIRM for the year 2009 is looking for Interns in the following projects where the intern may require to assist in data generation, analyze the data, understand the local context, help in product designing, compiling and documenting the learnings from the field. Insurance Compendium: Develop an Insurance compendium which will accumulate the learnings and practices from various micro insurance initiatives and currently running schemes for low income households in the country. Health Micro Insurance: Feasibility study in health micro insurance financing for the poor

CIRM offers internships for a minimum duration of 8 weeks. These internships provide graduate and undergraduate students with an opportunity to apply their classroom training and better understand the complexities of financing development in India. Interns will be assigned to these specific projects and will be directly overseen by full time researchers in CIRM. All internships will be based in Chennai and may require travel to project sites. While internships are unpaid, CIRM will cover project related expenses as per its internship policy. CIRM has had the privilege of hosting several interns in the past year from various Indian and international institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, London School Of Economics and Oxford University.
