Short-haul fleet at Lufthansa Passenger Airlines to be fitted with new cabins Lufthansa Passenger Airlines introduced its new cabin layout for the European traffic in December. Slimmer back rests and an ergonomically optimised shape will provide an average of more than four centimetres of additional leg-room in the future. The new seat design also allows up to two additional rows to be fitted per plane. This will enable Lufthansa to offer some 2,000 extra seats, which is roughly equivalent to twelve A320 aircraft. John F. Kennedy airport is the fourth destination for the Airbus A380 On taking delivery of its fifth Airbus A380, Lufthansa is to deploy the new flagship of its expanded fleet on the FrankfurtNew York route, with initially two connections a week on Mondays and Fridays. New York is the largest long-haul destination in Lufthansa's route network, with seven daily flights from Frankfurt, Munich and Dsseldorf. Karl Ulrich Garnadt appointed as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Lufthansa Cargo The Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Cargo AG has decided on changes to the company's Executive Board. Karl Ulrich Garnadt (53), previously Executive Board member at Lufthansa German Airlines responsible for Passenger Service and Hub Management, succeeds Carsten Spohr as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Lufthansa Cargo AG as of 1 January 2011. Lufthansa Cargo expands its route network in South America From the end of February Lufthansa Cargo is to include Manaus, an industrial metropolis and free trade area in Brazil in its route network, with two weekly flights from Frankfurt. The new flights will make Lufthansa Cargo the only freight airline with direct connections between Europe and Manaus and will also strengthen its route network in South America. Every week Lufthansa Cargo offers a total of ten direct flights between Europe and South America. This is supplemented by 31 flights from Lufthansa Passenger Airlines. Lufthansa Technik and Wizz Air extend scope of cooperation Following the new five-year contract Lufthansa Technik Maintenance International (LTMI) will carry out aircraft servicing for Wizz Air, including A checks, for eight Airbus A320s in Bucharest, Timisoara and Cluj. Two further Airbus A320s currently stationed in Prague are to be integrated into the contract from February. Changes in the Executive Board of LSG Holding The Supervisory Board of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG (LSG Holding) has appointed Erdmann Rauer, previously Senior Vice President Corporate Sales and Marketing, to the Executive Board of LSG Holding with effect from 1 January 2011. In his new role as Chief Sales Officer Rauer will lead the global sales and marketing activities for LSG Sky Chefs. He joins the Executive Board team in addition to Walter Gehl (CEO), Jochen Mller (COO) and Jens Theuerkorn (CFO).

Arrival of winter affects performance data in December December operations at all airlines in the Lufthansa Group were severely impaired by the winter weather. Despite this, the Group's 4.5 per cent additional capacity was sold in full (+4.6%), keeping the passenger load factor stable at 76.6 per cent, as in the previous year. The load factors in all long-haul traffic regions were down on the previous year, however, primarily as a result of delays and flight cancellations in feeder traffic to the hubs. More than 4,500 flights did not take place at Lufthansa Passenger Airlines for instance. Based on initial estimates, the flight disruption due to the weather and the related additional costs resulted in a negative earnings effect of approximately EUR 65m for the Lufthansa Group. Apart from this nonrecurring effect, demand and the pricing environment remained robust. The figures for Lufthansa Passenger Airlines are clearly influenced by the flight cancellations. Despite the cancellations in the second half of the month, the company was able to increase its sales by 6.0 per cent, although the total number of flights was 6.8 per cent down on the previous year. For the whole network the passenger load factor was roughly the same as the previous year at 76.8 per cent (-0.3 pp). SWISS increased its capacity substantially in December by 8.3 per cent. Sales rose by 7.9 per cent, keeping the load factor at a high 80.8 per cent (-0.2 pp). Austrian Airlines was able to increase both capacity (+2.3%) and sales (+2.1%) in equal measure. This meant that the load factor stayed stable at 72.5 per cent (-0.1 pp). The passenger load factor at bmi continued to develop well. The reduction in capacity as part of the restructuring was greater than the fall in sales, so that the load factor improved year on year by 0.9 percentage points to 65.7 per cent. Lufthansa Cargo was also exposed to the effects of the hard winter. In addition to the missing capacities on cancelled passenger flights, several cargo flights also had to be grounded due to the weather. Disruptions in road traffic, which is essential for the delivery of freight to airports, also had an adverse effect on the traffic figures. The cargo load factor was therefore down on the previous year by 1.7 percentage points in December, while sales increased by 8.4 per cent and capacity by 11.1 per cent.
The next Investor Info with the traffic data for January will be published on 09 February 2011.
