Summers here! If you look at the MSSR activities calendar youll find some interesting events Im sure youll also find you cant do it all, even though youd like to. For me, fitting the car activities in between family activities and home chores takes some coordination. When the weather guessers as Don calls them, upstage my plans, I dont like it. We lost a local cruise night to a premature weather cancellation and yet the night turned out nice. Another plan to go to the races was aborted due to the weather guessers only to have the night turn out nice. Do you find yourself in the same boat? Thanks to those that took in Salem Flag Day to support Gardner-Westcott. Its a short parade, so not too stressful on the cars or drivers. The day breaks up pretty early also. If you missed it, try it next year. Back to Bricks (B2B) Promo Tour attended by the Nashs, Stockes and Wymans was a really nice cruise across mid Michigan. Read about it in this issue. Think Hot Rod Power Tour on a lesser more personal scale and youll have a pretty good idea of what its like. To succeed in life you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone! Long Time Members, Dwight and Millie Fackender


Years and Years Ago, a Long Long Time Ago, Way Way Back When, Before there Was Even Dirt, In the Forgotten Past, Even Before There Was Motor State Street Rods, There were creatures out there that took Old Cars and made their parents wonder, What the !$#& did we raise. Fortunately for us, some of these slightly right of center individuals did us a favor and established Motor State Street Rods and helped form it to what we have today. Just think, people like Dwight Fackender along with his lovely companion; Millie (who by the way must be an angel for putting up with Dwight for all these years) helped shape the direction of this great club. Dwight and Millie were a part of this radical group who did not like the direction of the former club and broke away from them and founded MSSR. Dwight and Millie were among the first who started Motor State in 1976. It all began in Everett Rezendes basement with a simple sign up. Dwight and Millie dedication to the club is evident when you look at their service record. Dwight served as a Director from 1976 through 1980 and then moved to President in 1981 and 1982, which is 7 straight years of service to the club. Not to be outdone, Millie served as Director in 1980 and 1982 and Recording Secretary in 1981, another 3 years of dedication bringing the total to 10 years of club service. Dwight also organized the club trip to Memphis in 1980 and remember, travel in a Hot Rod was not something everyone looked forward to in those days. This trip alone took a week of travel. Most of the guys smile when Womens World is mentioned or in some cases check the wallet and you can blame Millie for most of the problem since she ran Womens World at Nats North when it was in Detroit at the Fairgrounds. Given that Millie is not a shopper this is amazing, as a matter of fact the best the ladies ever got her to shop successfully for was a cheap on sale blouse whereby the ladies officially gave her a graduation to their world. Millie also started the face painting at the games at Nats North, Winter Garage Crawls a tradition still being done. While we are giving away the real deal on Dwight and Millie, it is a known fact that they love CHEAP red wine and while Millie will turn in early, Dwight is the absolute last one to leave the party. In the past they particularly enjoyed the Motor State Street Rods Camping parties and they hosted many of the summer meetings at their home in Rockwood. These days the two call Florida and Omstead their homes where Dwight can still do some riding on his Harley through the Michigans countryside. One year, Millie took all the ladies aside to teach them how to make Cabbage Patch Dolls, most ended up looking more like Chuckie and scared hell out of any kids that were unlucky enough to get one. The Fackenders have also been members of Motor City Modified Auto Club and the Michigan Hot Rod Association since 1953 (I told you it was a long long time ago). Dwight was part of the Michigan Hot Rod Association and worked on the Rod Repair Shop at events that a lot of us have used over time. Dwight is a little unusual in that he still has the car that built in 1977, yes the 1935 Ford Coupe and he is proud to say he did it mostly himself. It has been in Autorama three times and driven to events all over this county wearing out the original 350 engine replacing it 11 years ago. The car has a 350 engine with a Turbo 350 transmission, power brakes, and A/C for Millie to enjoy. The paint on the car is the original 1977 paint Dwight put on the car and he would do it again if the need arises. For 20 years, this car has passed the NSRA Safety 23 which Dwight is most proud of. nice to know Dwight too. While Dwight has his original car, he is missing his travel costume that he is most proud of, his Superman Suit that consisted of a towel and a Speedo bathing suit that he proudly wore at travel events much to the _________ (fill in the blank) of the ladies present. Rumor has it that the Speedo resides on the bed post of one of our single lady members, we will not mention names but it would be nice if Dwight had his original Speedo back to go with his original hot rod.

So above all, a shout out is due Dwight and Millie for getting us on the road to where we are and sticking with us on this journey, we could not be what we are today without your help and guidance over the years.

One thing for certain, Dwight and Millie are household words in the Motor World, if you ever were at an event, swap meet or cruise night then Dwight knows you, he knows everybody in the car life and it is

MSSR Speed Freaks, Doing Their Thing in 2013

Last year several members experienced the Ohio Mile in Wilmington Ohio at an airpark that was originally a DHL facility. Two of our MSSR members achieved some very fast times in their categories. Al Piggott holds his class record for propane powered cars and Bob Carter ran at better than 180 in his roadster. Well the pair are up and at it again for 2013 and it looks like the bug has them hooked because both spent this last winter for an all out attempt to go faster. Bob, completely reset with a new motor which he hopes will be the answer to 200 plus. Al Piggott decided he has gone as fast as the Dart would go and built a new car for an attempt at 200 plus himself. The foundation of his car is a NSCAR racer that came out of the Kieslowski family garage as in Brad of NSCAR fame. Al has been friends with Brads uncle for some time and got them interested in having fun going in a straight line really fast as they ran Bonneville last year. Al spent the winter getting the former circle track racer ready for the Ohio Mile. in his attempts and spend a day as a volunteer for the East Coast Timing Association assisting the spectators to park and watch the action. And spectators they had, the parking was wall to wall and many people from Ohio and other states showed up to watch the action as you can get up close and personal with the cars in the staging lanes to see what old time back garage building can come up with. Some of the spectators brought along some interesting street rods and they added to the eye candy for the day. suggestion on changes. Signed off and now ready to go, the balance of Friday was spent getting the car ready and a very slow pass down the track just to make sure all the markers and the cars were ready for the Saturday show.

Al was not use to the prep it takes to get this monster ready and the crew worked a couple of hours early on Saturday morning getting the oil warm and the engine primed to fire. Once fired, it was off the starting line to wait the turn for a pass. Because this is a new car to the Ohio Mile, you must make a 150 mile per hour pass and then a 175 mile per hour pass before getting sign off and permission to go over 200 which the car is certainly capable of. The first pass resulted in a 133 mph run. Partners in crime, the Kieslowski brothers Ron and Bob made their first pass at 200 mph and when Ron returned to the trailer, his voice was a few octaves higher since he did not see the finish line and then failed to pull the chute resulting in a longer than wanted stop before he went off the end. Since the wind was directly coming north this was a problem since the finish line flags were not totally visible.

With all the work done, it was now time to head on down to Ohio and see if their efforts were worth it. But hold on, a bad back and under doctor orders not to get in the roadster; Bob Carter had to put his first attempt of 2013 on hold. Bob and Judy made the trip anyway, just to watch the action, help out Al

On Als run he did another 130 mph on his attempt to run the qualifying 150 and when he returned to the trailer there was some head scratching because he had plenty of Ohio Mile 2 horsepower left and could not figure out why he was short in the run. By Rich Pickens The second Ohio Mile seen success from all our driver owners. Al Piggott joined the 200 MPH Club with a run of 202 setting a new class record. Al was also promoting our hobby to the youngsters that weekend, as he brought along his granddaughter Payton Richardson and his Propane Powered Dart to see if she could handle the mile. Like a pro she powered the car down on its first run to a 102 MPH mark even though the car cut off close to the finish line due to a issue with one of the propane tanks. She marched to a 104 on her second run and on Sunday did one more run at 102. I think Al has got a partner now because Payton was last seen taking the NASCAR to the line and trying to get a run in it before Al had a chance to get there. Good Job Payton. Bob Carter aided by Judy Carter was also at the meet with a brand new motor in the roadster. Bob who is currently scheduled for some further back surgery got the doctors ok to make a few runs this weekend. With sever back pain, Bob got the car down the mile 5 times with a best of 178 and got in the record books Bob Carter and Payton Richardson at the line ready to go

Since these cars do not have a speedometer you depend entirely on the tachometer to determine the speed and the rpm reading is used to determine the speed calculations and on a review it was found that a wrong rear end ratio was used which made both runs come up short in the 150 attempt. Why is this important, well the ECTA requires a 150 run and then a 175 run before a 200 attempt is allowed. To go over or under requires a redo so in both cases the 130 were well short even though the car is capable. Since the math test was a failure, the next attempt would be on Sunday morning. On Sunday we arrived to a wet track since it rained during the night but by 10 AM the runs were a go and as Al got in line for his attempt, the sky opened up again and it rained for some time causing all the racers to start packing up and heading home. The attempts will just have to wait till June for the Second Ohio Mile in 2013.

The date is March 1, 2013 and Wayne Penwarden, former MSSR member extraordinaire, is lurking about his home in Spring Hill, Florida. Suddenly, the phone rings: Hey Wayne, this is Jim Stocke back in the sunny south for the month of March. Cool Jim. Have you been looking forward to some car events during your stay? Absolutely, unequivocally and irrevocably I am ready! Wow! Okay. There is the Dade City Cruise Saturday and several local cruises including the one at Hardees on Highway 19. Aha, but, I saved the best for last: Billetproof at Don Garlits place in Ocala on the 23rd. Lets plan on going and I will contact Gary Lazette and Jim Sabo too. Okay. See you soon. Yea, go ahead and Smile, it only sunny and 70 in Florida, Michigan not so much Ah, we stroll around the multiple rows of reverse snobbery cars. Some really We all scramble out of the car after parking in the handicap lot (How come handicap? Well, seems the attendant asked if we had a handicap tag and Jim said yes but, it was his wifes. Okay the attendant says; park right over there at the entrance. Who are we to argue?). Free entry? Oh boy. So we enter the nirvana of car enthusiasts. Big Show

How often do you see eight yes eight carburetors on an engine? Gobs and gobs of flatheads with a few being V12s. The largest car butt ever is that Dodge business coupe we saw with its huge rear end. It was a gibungous butt. Don McKinnon would be envious. Okay, moving on here we came across one guy who made his views concerning trailer queens abundantly clear by sticking a label on his fuel manifold block: F--- Trailer Queens. I understood his point.

Don has three buildings: Two have the worlds greatest collection of dragsters on the planet and one has a knockout collection of mostly restored cars with several customs and streetrods too. Big likes old cars too morning till about 4 in the afternoon, us old guys were certainly feeling their aches and pains, so time to call it quits and tool back to Jim Stockes rental house for an after show party. Audry, Sheila and Judy (Sandy was out of town.) whipped up some great eats for all of us. The legendary MSSR eating skills are now getting back in shape for the upcoming season. Wayne also became an educator. Do you know the fine points of the differences between 49 vs 50 Fords? After walking around from about 10 in the 'OLD' IS WHEN... You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police. 'OLD' IS WHEN.. 'Getting a little action' means you don't need to take any fiber today. 'OLD' IS WHEN... 'Getting lucky' means you find your car in the parking lot. 'OLD' IS WHEN... An 'all nighter' means not getting up to use the bathroom. AND 'OLD' IS WHEN... You are not sure if these are facts or jokes?

BilletProof Michigan & Detroit Dragway Reunion

Teaming up together to provide not only eye candy but also some noise and action on the drag strip, Billetproof which has traditionally been held at Riverside Park in Ypsilanti moved location to the Milan Dragway where the Detroit Dragway Reunion has become a yearly event. For a mere $20 you could enter with your not so fancy rod and take a trip down the drag strip. That was the plan, however, as you all know the weather in Michigan has not been kind to us this year and it was only in May did the summer start to arrive. After finally putting a week of nice temps together, someone upstairs did not want us to get use to the 70s and sent along a day of 50s with some wind and really turned us back into bundled up creatures like we lived in Alaska. The car show crowd still showed up and the turnout was decent in count. Rules of no billet on a car seemed to be relaxed this year as several nice street rods where on the grounds. A lot of customs filled out the field as well as the normal amount of rat rods. You know most of these cars are driven and to know they survived the trip down Plank Road from the Milan exit to the Drag Strip was a feat the deserves an award, this is one messed up Michigan Road.

On the other side of the drag strip, the Detroit Dragway Reunion assembled a large field of cars for the day of racing fun. One class had over 70 entries alone and the old time gassers showed up in force and a large field of early funny cars and front engine dragsters was also on hand for the show.

Well, if you survived the cold weather, you enjoyed a really nice event, full of activities, nitro, tire smoke and cool rides plus drag race cars from the past as well as some very old drivers. And oh yes, if you like rockabilly, they had that too. If they do this in 2014, lets hope for some nice weather.

Roush Open House, June 2013

You can be sure of a good time and seeing a lot of eye candy at the Roush Open House events that happen three times this year. The June open house may be the best of all since Jack Roush arranges to have his drivers on the property to sign autographs for those so choosing. The event is advertised to start at 5 PM but like most cruise nights if you get there at that time you may not be sure of a parking place since the lot and surrounding property fills quickly and this day was not exception. I arrived to see the normal Mustang armada lining both sides After parking I soon found the reason why the event was so full, there was around 25 Not to be outdone, Ford was well represented by several Talledaga Torinos which brought back a great car war era in NASCAR. When you went inside you were treated to a great display of Jack Roush cars that is if you could see them due to the lines of people lined up to get a autograph from Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle on other wheel men under contact at Roush Fenway Racing. The line went on forever.

Super Birds filling the parking area normally taken by nothing but Ford Power. Super Birds from Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina and other places were proudly on display. All types and conditions from fully restored to barn fresh and a few in their original race trim, one of the late country western singing racing stars, Marty Robbins required sun glasses to viewed.

Back outside, there was an engine build contest as well as a few old gassers and funny cars to view.

MSSR Cruise Nights Redford VFW


With a nice 67 degree day with the sun shining strong, the Motor State Street Rods invaded the Redford VFW cruise night and brought along 17 cars to help them achieve a full house, so full in fact that they had to cut off entry into the facility by 5:15 since every spot was filled. Member of MSSR came from Gregory, Pinckney, Livonia, Westland, Taylor, Dearborn, Garden City, Brownstown Twp, Farmington Hills, Ann Arbor, Southfield, Dearborn Heights, and Detroit. A few members arrived early to secure spaces for as many as possible and we got almost all parked in the same area. With everyone full of cruise night cuisine it was time to walk for a bit and check out our fellow cruisers and look at whats new since last year. You did not have to go far to see a cool Plymouth Coupe in black suede or a model A coupe not seen before. One benefit MSSR has is our own NSRA Safety Inspection Team of Bob and JoAnn Nash who did several inspections at this cruise.

Members gathered in one area and the conversations started along with food brought back to our area obtained from the VFW workers. We were also blessed to have Claudia Williams bring some great lemon and chocolate squares in celebration of John Schumonts birthday. John keep the exact year to himself but lets just say our senior club keeps getting larger.

Everyone appeared to have a good time at this event to kick off our 2013 cruise season and this event did not let us down, good food, good company and a lot of cars to see. Just a view of the front isle

Back to the Bricks Lakeshore to Lakeshore Promotion Tour - June 7-12, 2013

What the heck is a Promo Tour? Okay, you all know about Flints Back to the Bricks show on the same day as Woodward (Why the hell do they plan it on that day anyway?). Well, the folks who run the B2B show decided a few years ago that it would be fun and would advertise the show if they set up a several day road trip around Michigan. And, thus, the Promo Tour was born. There were about 75 cars on this trip. Its not a rigid schedule. That is, you can join and leave at any point of the trip and you are on your own between planned stops. It runs from Friday, June 7 through Wednesday, June 12. Bob and Joanne and Jim and Judy decided to join the tour to experience something a little different in the car enthusiasts world. Our first stop was Saturday in Hart located on the western shore of Lower Michigan. We arrived too late to join any tour activities but not too late to savor broasted chicken served at the famous Brown Bear Bar in Pentwater, a short distance from Hart. They serve the best broasted chicken on the planet made even better after being washed down with a pint of Blue Moon. After spending the night at Stockes Sandcastle on nearby Silver Lake, Sunday short street blocked off for the local car club. Nice area, friendly folks and lots of classy street rods, muscle cars, classics and other assorted cool cars. Even Elvis was present. At 1 PM we moseyed onto the roads to head to Cadillac where we were treated to closed streets and local cars to compliment our 75 cars on the tour. Of the top 15 (There were 243 entries.) trophies awarded, the B2B cars won 10 of them! Says something about the quality of the cars on the tour doesnt it? And, ta da, guess what? Jim Stockes world famous Stocke Mobile was one of them. Yea! (Can I toot my own horn?) Okay, toot, toot. Monday already? Wow time flies and all that. On to West Branch in the cool, drizzly, overcast weather, the home area for the MSSR northern contingent. But first, we meet at McQuires Resort before taking off. Six participants were interviewed in the parking lot by a TV reporter for a local Channel 5 station. Cool. Those six included Jim and Judy but, alas, we never saw ourselves on TV. The interviews were fun though. After the TV excitement we take off for the first of two stops: The House of Moses Museum in Vogel Center and the second in Prudenville for, yes!, coffee and donuts. The museum was a tribute to Kevin Moses, a motorcycle enthusiast who had died of cancer a few years ago. The museum was tiny but very interesting from the four door, dual four barrel 56 Cadillac to the seven vintage Harleys plus lots of memorabilia. On to the donuts guys, Im hungry. All this activity was great fun and quite interesting. On this type of trip you meet many new people making many new friends along the way. So far, we were enjoying this trip immensely. It is great to be among friendly people who share a common interest. Bob and Joanne and Jim and Judy get back on the road to travel to West Branch after gorfing down those fabulous donuts and after considerable gum flapping with all our new friends. It was a little hike to West Branch the last part of which was on I75. So, Bob and Jim exit the X-way only to be greeted at the bottom of the ramp by a police car with its light flashing away. Oh, oh. Were we speeding? The cop, in civilian clothes, comes over to announce that he is to escort the tour into town and where were the rest of the cars? At that moment, about 10 more cars showed up and off we went with sirens wailing and lights flashing to Team Hodges, a car dealer just outside of town. It was very cool to watch all the traffic part ways and stop to let us go by. What power we car people have. Ha! We were warmly welcomed by the crew at the dealership. They ran a very well

morning we met the tour at the Oceana County Airport for a great pancake breakfast. Seems that the famous Oceana Asparagus Festival was going on at the same time, which swelled the attendance to several hundred people. Enjoyable, and you could walk off the food on the airport apron to view several vintage aircraft that had flown in for the event. But, it was cold, windy and looked like rain at any second. That stopped no one though. Us car folks are tough. We left the airport to travel to Ludington where we parked in a bank lot next to a

organized event going all out for us. This was an interesting place: The left half of the main building housed Ram, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. The right half housed Chevrolet. I bet there was considerable negotiating with both manufacturers to pull that one off. A free lunch was served consisting of the ever present hot dogs along with homemade potato salads, chips and pop. Like I said, they treated us well. After the requisite gum flapping, we drove to our hotel for a brief rest before the evening planned car show in the town center. Line up guys, lets get this tour moving. Continued Next Page

Every car was photographed in front of the town mural painted on the side of a building before we parked on the main street for the show. Again, ta da, the famous Stocke Mobile and, the famous Nash Mobile received Just Because awards. Jims 37 was chosen just because the judge like the Maize and Blue color scheme and Bobs Nash was chosen just because the judge liked purple. Oh well, any award is an honor. Rest All motel and went to dinner at a local joint. Sob, the tour is ending, for us at least, tomorrow. All we have to look forward to is, aha, coffee and donuts at the Depot, an old train station, in Standish. Oh me, how many donuts can the human body endure? Millions, I would say. The trip from Oscoda to Standish was kinda nice because we hugged the Lake Huron shoreline the whole way. But watch what you

are doing when driving in the significant fog all around. Ah, the Depot looms up in the distance, housing, yes, donuts ahhhhh. This stop is the last before trekking home. After, you know, gorfing and gum flapping, Bob and Joanne and Jim and Judy, hop on I75 and home. We arrive safely at our respective abodes, tired and happy after a great car tour of Lower Michigan. Hooray for hot rods!

Salem Flag Day Celebration June 8, 2013

Ominous, gray skies greet us as we meander up to the clubhouse in Salem at 10 AM to gather for the second annual participation of MSSR in the Salem Flag Day celebration. But those gray skies did not deter us from joining the festivities. Bob and Jorayne Wyman, who live very nearby, joined us on this leg of the tour swelling MSSR participation to three cars. We were a happy, compatible group who enjoyed each others company. Isnt this what its all about? And now, exhausted, to sleep to prepare for another day of excitement. Tuesday, we head to Oscoda on the eastern shore of Lower Michigan. But first, yes, yes, yes, donuts and coffee in Hale supplied by Kochers Food Pride. Egad, are these donuts good so, they must be bad for your health, right? Is there a one to one relation between tasting good and bad for your health? Move on fellas and gals. We have to get going. We pass up a chocolate stop at Sherri Candies; looked really dumpy but we stopped at the Rustic Relics store which was closed. Okay, move on to the Dam Store well, you cant win them all. Our next stop was a Car Quest store just outside of Oscoda whose parking lot became the venue for another car show. We arrived around 11 AM, settled in, and enjoyed the usual camaraderie for several hours. Lunch was served right there in the parking lot but none of us could face another hot dog or pulled pork sandwich so we opted for McDonalds a desperate move. The tour slowed a bit at this point. That was okay after a very active three days. After the show, we checked in to the

Good club turnout 11 cars and about 16 club members showed up to pay tribute to our countrys flag, to honor our veterans and to thank the community of Salem and the Gardner Westcott company for our beautiful clubhouse in this quaint town. The parade is the kickoff for the event and they really put out a great effort to make it a success. There were fire trucks, tractors, a huge youth band with flag twirlers and, of course, our contingent bolstered by several local cool cars. Maurice Alexander was the Grand Marshall. Bearing Burners Show at the GM Tech Center

THE BEARING BURNERS SHOW GM TECH CENTER, WARREN, MI. May 5, 2013 The GM Tech Center is located on a one square mile chunk of land in Warren bounded by Van Dyke, Mound, Chicago (13 Mile) and12 Mile. This huge complex day car show much more fun to attend as these types of shows can get a little boring without these neat distractions. So, was it fun? Ah, yes. This was a great way to start the car event season. A very notable feature of the grounds is worth mentioning. In the middle of one of the parking lots where the show is held, there a strange looking structure. Sitting on top of some good sized round pillars was a large rectangular roof set at a jaunty angle under which were several car stalls. No signs or labels were anywhere in sight to tell what the heck this was. But, with my fantastic mental acuteness, I deduced that it was, walla, an electric car charging station with some of the electricity supplied by solar panels mounted on the roof. Right up to the state of the art Id say. brought his magnificent 48 Cadillac limo.

with its dozens of buildings is devoted to the development of vehicles manufactured by GM. On this complex, a very cool annual car show is held early in the crusin season. The Bearing Burners, sponsors of the show, is a car club out of Mt. Clemens. These Burner guys put on a great show that is exceptionally well organized. The show area is long and relatively narrow covering the parking lots along the east or Van Dyke side of the Center. The car count is a relatively modest at 470 but, it seemed to be substantially bigger than that number suggests probably because of the enormous swap meet connected to it.

Hey Bill, its me, remember? Aha, yes and great to see you too. Good, now I can hang out with someone. Bill was with a friend (Forgot his name senior moment.) who was driving a beautifully restored 57 Ford retractable. Much later, both Bill and his friend won a well deserved award.

While meandering up and down the car and swap aisles while ogling all this great metal, along comes a fellow MSSRer. And I thought I was all alone, away from the great companionship of my fellow club members. And who was this soul?

Ah, but, oh me, the World Famous Stocke Mobile did not win an award. Sob.

Wow, I mean there had to have been 300 vendors, maybe even more. You want to swap, you came to the right place. (Have you ever seen anyone actually swap at a swap meet? I didnt think so. Cruisin and Other Ramblings

In case you missed the March Meeting, it was announced that we have lost our current newsletter printer. This loss is substantial in respect that it was free of charge to the club. The board has generously approved that the last two remaining issue for this year will be paid for out of the operating fund to ensure that those who have signed up for direct mailing to your home continues this year. Later this year, the Board will review the situation to see what needs to be done to continue the newsletter. Thanks for your patience while we develop a plan for 2014 and beyond. While we always introduce new members to the club with an introduction in the newsletter it has become apparent to me that not everyone is aware of some of the senior members and what they have contributed to the success of MSSR. So starting with this issue the plan will be to do an article on the longer term members to make sure the old and new come together. There is a cruise night on the schedule to the Gilmore Museum in August, if you did not go last year put this one on the calendar and go early so you can take in the fantastic collection of cars, one of the best in the country.

FUN WITH CARS, FAMILY and FRIENDS The Motor State Street Rod Car Club was founded in 1976 as a social club to promote safe, family enjoyment of modified vehicles. The club is a non-profit benevolent organization established to promote the enjoyment of older vehicles and protect the specialized interests of its members. In addition, the club lives up to its motto of "Fun with Cars, Family and Friends" with less structured activities that may include casual cruising, picnics, dances, dinners, swap meets, car shows, rod runs, cruise-ins, and monthly meetings. Funds raised every year are donated to various needy causes.

The development of the 1940 Dodge had its roots in the company's history. From the time of its absorption into Chrysler, the Dodge lineup began to change and evolve. The hard-drinking Dodge Brothers, John and Horace, who had set out to build a Ford-beater in 1914, found their logical successors in the hard-driving Chrysler team: Walter Percy Chrysler, K. T. Keller, and the engineering triumvirate of Fred Zeder, Owen Skelton, and Carl Breer. Stories abound of Chrysler's taking over Dodge in July 1928 from the New York banking firm of Dillon, Read & Company, which had bought the Hamtramck, Michigan, carmaker three years earlier. The best one is how Keller had the factory signs changed overnight to read "Chrysler Corporation-Dodge Division." The next morning, Clarence Dillon, representing the sellers, phoned Walter Chrysler to assure him that Dodge was in good shape, and would "run itself for three months." Chrysler replied, "Hell, Clarence, our boys moved in yesterday." Still, Dillon must have been delighted, since W.P. Chrysler had paid him $170 million. Though the Dodge Brothers badge didn't disappear until 1939, there was little doubt the business belonged to Chrysler from 1928 forward -- and that it had been a good buy. Under John and Horace, Dodge would have considered a 100,000-car year phenomenal. After weathering the Depression, Chrysler was able to start producing more than 200,000 Dodges a year starting in the late 1930s. But while Chrysler and DeSoto were occasionally innovative with products like the Airflow, Dodge remained resolutely conservative. This was no less true of the 1940-1948 models, which maintained the traditional Dodge virtues of practical durability and honest dollar value. There was no question of daring designers risking all on a radical styling departure, or madcap racing drivers trouncing the opposition, or a fervent "engineers' car company" blowing everybody else away with some technical breakthrough. What we have here are good, solid cars, probably the best Dodges built to that time, cars that made Dodge-Plymouth dealers rich beyond their imaginings. In those days, every Chrysler, DeSoto, and Dodge dealer sold Plymouths too, but the Dodge-Plymouth stores easily did best because Dodge always outsold Chrysler and DeSoto. Even now, Dodge is a Chrysler -well, Daimler-Chrysler -- powerhouse, with annual sales volume that would have been unbelievable in the 1940s. Plymouth, meanwhile, is vanishing after some seven decades, apparently in the name of progress.
