Real Time BI
presented by:

The speed of todays processing systems has moved classical data warehousing into the real-time domain. Business transactions are sourced as they occur and the real-time environment supports the classical strategic functions of data warehousing for deriving information and knowledge from past enterprise activity, but it also provides real-time tactical & strategic support to drive enterprise actions that react to immediate events

What Is Real Time Business Intelligence

Real-Time Business Intelligence (RTBI) is the process of delivering information about business operations as they occur for the purpose of instant decision-making Traditional BI presents historical data for manual analyses; RTBI compares currents business events with historical patterns to detect problems or opportunities automatically. Automated analysis capability drives corrective actions to be initiated or business processes optimized Data Warehouses meet an organisation`s strategic needs by manipulating large amounts of data to derive new information and knowledge; it has little tactical value since data is usually stale. In RTBI, transactions are fed as they occur and this system supports both tactical and strategic needs of an organisation.

Benefits Of RTBI
All RTBI systems have some latency, but the goal is to minimize the time from the business event happening to an action being initiated. Improves Data Latency - reduces the time taken to collect and store the data by using in-memory feature Optimizes Analysis Latency reduces the time taken to analyze the data and turn it into actionable information Optimizes Action Latency - reduces the time taken to react to the information and take action. Is Event Driven - enables events to be analysed without first transforming and storing. Leverages a Rules Engine - allows for analyzing incoming transactions against a historical data store and recommends quick actions. Allows for Trickle Feeding a Data Warehouse - transactions are received in real-time and are stored to become a growing historical record of activity.

Organisational Considerations For RTBI

As the first step, establish the business need for real-time decision-making.

Create a business view for real-time decision making and the underlying need for real-time data Determine your definition of real-time vis--vis near real-time or right-time. Create your own definition and stay with what works for your organisation Evaluate whether real-time data capture is possible Carry out a gap analysis against existing environment technology, architecture and most importantly, business processes Land on a buy vs. build approach - evaluate pros & cons Create a business case with a compelling argument for real time decision making
