Waterquality,however,remainsahugeproblem,withhigh levelsofarsenicanduntreatedsewageintheriverwater.

SouthernAustralia Australiaisthecontinentwiththeleastrainfall,apartfrom Antarctica. Itstwolargestrivers,theMurrayandtheDarling,havebeen extensivelydammedforpowerandirrigation,reducingflows totheseabythreequartersbutprovidingthreemillion peopleand40%ofAustralia'sfarmswithwater. WaterextractionfromtheMurrayriverwascappedin1995 andprogrammestorepairsomeofthedestructionarenow underway.
