Our Moral Duty

M. Myriel is the bishop of Digne, a much-admired clergyman whose great kindness and charity have made him popular throughout his parish. When Valjean arrives at the town of Digne, no one is willing to give him shelter because he is an exconvict except to M. Myriel, the kindly bishop of Digne who treats Valjean with kindness, but unfortunately Valjean repays the bishop by stealing his silverware. When the police arrest Valjean, Myriel covers for him, claiming that the silverware was a gift. The authorities release Valjean, and Myriel makes him promise to become an honest man. Eager to fulfil his promise, Valjean masks his identity and enters the town of Montreuilsur-mer under the assumed name of Madeleine. towns mayor. Like M. Myriel, I always give another chance to people who did wrong to me, because at the end of the day like Myriel, I believed that there is always to kindness to everyone; its just that, it seems gone due to the traumatic experiences that these people such as Valjean experienced. These people hide their kindness and try to portray themselves as bad guy because they think that since society look upon them as a criminal, why not make it for real. But if there would be someone that would show them kindness despite the sins that they committed, this kindness in their hearts would open up, and from this we could actually change the life of someone. In relation with me, there is once an old lady who knocks in our gate and asks for alms because her son is sick; I gave her a five peso yet she complained that it was so small; but instead of getting irritated to her, I just tell her to wait again thinking that maybe this old woman was really in need; and on my return, I gave her twenty pesos, and told her to be careful especially it is summer, and from it, she thanked me and start to walked away. Immanuel Kant stated in his moral philosophy that it is our moral duty to help the needy, even though those people would not give us back something in return. We want to help someone not because we want to be happy rather we want to fulfil our duty to Valjean invents an ingenious

manufacturing process that brings prosperity to the town, and eventually becomes the

our fellowmen, which he called as good will. Good will is giving something to someone who really much needs it, even though you need it too. In line with the story, M. Myriel had performed his moral duty by welcoming Valjean in his shelter, even though he know that Valjean was an ex convict, he still warmly accepted Valjean. And when Valjean got arrested by the police because of stealing his silverware; he still performed his moral obligation to help someone in need, by telling the police that it was his gift for him because he knows that Valjean was really in need; though the method that Valjean used was bad, he still tolerate it.
