Introduction

This year, helped by our teacher Rosa Fernndez Alba, we have been working on a project of basic robotics in bilingual Technology. In the following pages you can read a fully-detailed diary of the evolution of our Technology project during 1st of ESO, apart from the various lists and earlier tasks we did during the process of construction and designing. III List of Tools


By David Salces (Responsible of Tools)

- Caliper: We used it to take the measurements of the motor and the switch that has the robot. - Glue Gun: We used it to glue the parts that the robot needs to run to the battery holder. - Wire Stripper: We used it to strip the plastic cover of the wire to glue it with tin to the battery holder with the help of the solder. - Solder: We used it to melt the tin, put it on the wire and glue it with the battery holder and the rest of the wires. - Pliers: Use the pliers to press down on the terminal connectors to hold the wire and the SPDT terminal tight. You could need some glue or soldering. - Lighter: We use it because we put a plastic cover inside them and we heat the plastic to stick it to the antenna.

IV List of Health and Safety


IV.1 Rules There must be 2 people to stick out the soldering iron of the socket. You shouldnt play with the soldering iron, the silicon gun, the scissors, the socket or anything in the workshop.

IV.2 Dangerous Materials and Tools - Soldering Iron: Its very dangerous because its 400-500C. Any contact with the hot part with your body will burn you the skin. - Glue gun: This tool is dangerous because it shuts liquid and hot glue. It cools down quickly but if you touch it before it cools down you can burn you or a partner. - Scissors: There are dangerous because the can hurt and cut you. - Socket: This is dangerous when someone puts something in (especially parts of the body, metals, water)

IV.3 Dangerous Moments in the Workshop -When Rosa came with the metallic necklace into the workshop. -David put the hand too near to the hot part of the glue gun. -Someone of another class let the shelter on. -David was playing a lot of time with the soldering iron making balls. -One soldering iron falls always of his support and it could touch someone. -David doesnt look well and the soldering iron passes too near to the hand or arm of someone. -Today Rosa came to the workshop with a scarf and a necklace. -Guillermo threw the scissors to the table and after he was playing with them. -I (Fabin) turned the soldering iron too fast and it was near Guilles hand. -Guillermo played with the soldering iron making drops.

-Carlos put the hand on the robot when Miguel had the soldering iron in the hand. -Guillermo was paying with both scissors. -Guillermo had the hand too near to the soldering iron, I said it to him and he said that he wouldnt make what I say. -Carlos tried to take the soldering iron when I had it in my hand. -Guillermo crossed the table with the hand to take the soldering iron

Diary

First Months (from December to February) We began working on this Project the week before leaving for Christmas holidays. As homework for those holidays, Rosa sent us an artistic task: each student in the class had to deliver, after Christmas, 5 sheets of paper all full of insects, which could give us ideas for the final design of the insect that has to cover our robot. When we came back to school, we started sketching the isometric views (front, side and plan) of one of the elements that belong to the robot. We could choose between the SPDT switch and the motor. When we finished this task, Rosa taught us to measure objects with the caliper and how to present the resulting data on paper, next to the isometric views. But then we began with a very serious and accurate task: we needed to do a fair copy of the sketches of the robots parts, including the dimensions and the isometric views, which had to be exactly three times larger than the original object. This fair copy, after being drawn in 2H pencil, was highlighted with a felt pen (its width had to be exactly 8 mm). After all this, we focused on electricity, including the components of a circuit, its symbols and how a circuit worked. We also took a look at the robots circuit.

Monday, 4th of March 2013 Today we have finally sat in the final groups. They have given us 2 SPDT switches, an on-off switch and a battery holder. Our responsible of tools, David Salces, was explained by Rosa how to use the glue gun. We were going to start to glue the different components but, when David finished explaining what Rosa said to him, the bell rang. Thursday, 7th of March 2013 Today, our group began to fold the metal bar which has to hold the 2 motors together. After this, it must be glued to the battery holder. I must also say that this day we have had lots of arguments. For example, we argued a lot about who had to glue the motors. Most of the group was also very talkative, so it was extremely difficult to focus and work concentrated.

We finally glued the motors, but we came across a problem: the robot wasnt stable. It fell down when we shook it a little bit. We need to solve this problem as soon as possible, because if not our robot will not work. Monday, 11th of March 2013 Today he have put a red wooden ball, inside one piece of metal, which we have to mold, located in the back of the robot. This ball works as a back wheel, which solves our problem, because it supports some weight and stabilizes the robot. We also put 2 black plastic pieces under the metal legs of the motors. This was done to make the robot higher and to protect the metal, because otherwise it could be damaged. Thursday, 14th of March 2013 Today they have given us back the insect sketches we did as homework during Christmas holidays. We have been debating about what insect we should choose for the final design and we have decided to make, each one of us, a sketch of a new insect, mixing up our favourite ideas from the ones we had brought. In the sketch we also had to include our proposals for the materials to use. This is the last technology class after Easter holidays, so well share our sketches and proposals by the beginning of April. Thursday, 4th of April 2013 This is the first class after Easter, so we shared our sketches. We voted and decided to use one of the drawings made by Jaime Fernndez (Responsible of Cleanness). After that, we proposed several changes to the original design; all of them were passed. Guillermo has begun to work on the sketches of the isometric views (front, side and plan) of the final design, with all the changes incorporated. While he drew and I wrote, the rest of the group began to propose ideas for the materials that might be used to build the different parts of the insect. Next day we will continue with this task. Monday, 8th of April 2013 Today, while Guillermo kept on drawing the isometric views of the insect and I wrote this diary, David and Jaime started to peel some wires to prepare them for soldering. Meanwhile, Fabin continued to write ideas for the materials that will make up our insect. When Jaime and David finished peeling the wires, they helped Fabin with the ideas. This day most of the group was extremely talkative and worked very little, so it was not a productive day.

Thursday, 11th of April 2013 Today, Guillermo has begun sketching the fair copy of the isometric views of the insect. Fabin has started to write a list of the health and safety problems during all the project and David and Jaime have kept on thinking on ideas for the materials. Ten minutes before the class finished, we voted all the material's ideas and we decided which ones to use (see section Materials) and who should bring them. Monday, 15th of April 2013 Today, Rosa came to our table to help us soldering. First we took the necessary tools to solder, along with the photocopy that showed the robot's circuit. The first wire Rosa told us to solder was the one that connected the battery holder with the on-off switch. So we stripped the wire, we plugged in the solder and waited for it to get hot. We tinned one end, but when we were going to tin the other one, the bell rang. Thursday, 18th of April 2013 Today we tinned the other end of the wire and waited a lot for Rosa, who had to tell us which was the place in the battery holder that we needed to connect with the ON-OFF switch. We also wrote and decided some approximate dimensions (length, width and thickness) of the insect. We did this because our plan is to prepare all the insect's pieces during May holidays and to bring them afterwards for building the finals insect. Guillermo kept on drawing the fair copy of the isometric views of the insect, which will probably be finished next week. Monday, 22nd of April 2013 Today, when we opened our group box (where we keep the robot and all the material we have being developing during the project), we found out that the wire that we had soldered last day was now separated from the robot. To solve this annoying problem, we plugged in the solder, but, when we were about to begin soldering, we noticed that the soldering iron didn't work properly. So we changed the soldering iron. But when we were finally beginning to solder, we run across another problem: the sponge that we used to clean the soldering iron wasn't wet, as it had to be. What a big problem! Fortunately, David knew how to solve it: he went to water the sponge. After such an enormous setback, and a little bit angry, we finally tinned and connected one end of the wire, but the other one appeared to be impossible to connect.

To solve it, we stripped that end a little bit more and we tried to connect it again. This time, with Kostyn's help, we succeeded. Thursday, 25th of April 2013 Today, when we opened the material box, we again found a problem: the metal bar, which holds the motors, was separated from the battery holder, when the thing must have been the other way round. Clearly, the double-side tape that we used to stick the metal bar to the battery holder didn't work very well, so probably we will change it for some silicon in a while. While we were waiting for Rosa to come (she needed to explain us what to do next), David was messing around with the soldering iron, which is quite irresponsible and very dangerous, because he can produce an accident. Afterwards, David, when he stopped doing foolish things, and I placed a small drop of tin between the two Normally Closed (NC) terminals of the SPDT switch. A few minutes later, Rosa actually came and told us to connect the Normally Open (NO) terminals of the SPDT switch. So Guillermo has taken the soldering iron and, helped by Jaime, he has done it with lots of accuracy. Unfortunately, David and Carlos were constantly arguing while they were soldering; they don't seem to realize that some people are doing a very accurate and dangerous activity, so if you don't let them focus an accident can occur. Monday, 30th of April 2013 Today, Rosa showed us a video that explained how to connect the complete robot's circuit. We have decided that Jaime will do the List of Materials (the ones used throughout the project) instead of our Responsible of Materials, Guillermo Gonzlez Cosn. As Jaime is not doing much and Guillermo has done an awesome fair copy of the isometric views of the insect, we thought Guillermo disserves to relax a little bit. When we opened the box of materials, we found out that the wire that connected the Normally Open (NO) terminals of the SPDT switches was disconnected. So we connected it and we checked it was stable and there weren't too many probabilities for it to disconnect again. This is the last class before May holidays, so we will continue soldering next Monday. Monday, 6th of May 2013 It has happened once again: the metal bar, whose function is to hold the motors, was separated from the battery holder. We decided to put an end to such an annoying problem. Taking the glue gun, Guillermo and Jaime glued the metal bar to the battery holder.

Thursday, 9th of May 2013 Today Rosa didn't come because she was on strike, so we didn't have class. Monday, 13th of May 2013 Today Jaime didn't come and the soldering turn was for Fabin and Carlos. They connected the Normally Closed (NC) terminals of the SPDT switches with the motors. Afterwards Rosa came and, thanks to her explanations, we realized that we only had to connect the motors with the On-Off switch for the robot to work. Knowing this, Carlos and David (Fabin stopped soldering to keep on with the Health and Safety list) put their nose to the grindstone but, when they were about to start soldering, the bell rang. Thursday, 16th of May 2013 Today I replaced Carlos soldering and, helped by David, I have connected both motors to the On-Off switch. But, as we didn't have the batteries, we couldn't make the robot work. Meanwhile, Guillermo began a plan view (real scale) of the insect with the colours of each part, which we also decided today. Monday, 20th of May 2013 Today, replacing David and me, Guillermo and Jaime kept on soldering. They connected the battery holder to the SPDT switches (one end of the battery holder was connected with a black wire to the NO terminal of one of the switches and the other side was connected with a red wire to the NO terminal of the other switch). While they did this, Rosa came and congratulated Fabin for his great work in the Health and Safety List (see Index for more details). The group has decided that David, Fabin and Jaime will give me their works (the lists of Tools, Health and Safety and Materials) at the beginning of June, for me to merge them into the final document, the Technical Report. Thursday, 23rd of May 2013 Today Carlos and Fabin have connected the wire, which was disconnected when we arrived, that communicated the NC terminal of one of the SPDT switches with one of the motors. After this, we turned on the On-Off switch and the robot started moving, with perfect harmony and direction. But with the moment's emotion, someone manipulated the robot too much and suddenly it stopped working. We peered all around the circuit looking for

the problem and we realized that the two wires that connected the motors with the On-Off switch had been brutally disconnected. Fabin and Carlos, complaining about what they considered "bad luck", immediately started reconnecting the wires, but they didn't have time to finish doing so. 27th of May 2013 Today Carlos has been replaced by Guillermo in the duty of reconnecting the wires that were brutally disconnected last week. When the end of the class bell rang, Guillermo turned off and returned to the shelf the soldering iron. But after this he went home without Rosas permission, for what he got a Communication of Punishment.

30th of May 2013 The wires that were soldered last week are again disconnected. This time it was David and Jaimes turn to finish connecting the robots circuit. When David announced that he had fixed all the wires, the whole group surrounded the robot. Guillermo pressed the button ON in the On-Off switch. A big Hurrah came from our table: the robot worked with perfect sintony and speed. But as it had happened last time the robot worked, one of the wires was disconnected because the group was always touching the robot, especially David. A little bit furious for our second unsuccessful attempt of making the robot work, Carlos and David started re-soldering the disconnected wire, but they didnt have time to do so because the bell rang. Meanwhile all this happened, I found out that the papier-mch that I had used to fill the insects eyes needed an extra silicon layer. So David went for the silicon gun and, when it was hot enough, Jaime took it. Not without arguments, the paper mach was finally glued. We also kept doing the insects body (actually a plastic bottle), decorating it with a black background and purple strips.

3rd of June 2013 Today we fixed the robot's antennas. But first we needed to glue the insect's eyes to the insect's body. Carlos and Guillermo did this task quickly and efficiently. David also collaborated, mainly fixing the 4 (they should have been six, but the entire group approved them to be 4) insect's legs.

Afterwards, Rosa came and helped us planning how to join the insect with the robot, which we are going to do very soon.

6th of June 2013 Today all the group except me (I was doing this diary at the moment) focused on fixing the robot's antennas, a task we hadn't finished during last class. And they did it. We also debated about important details (size, contents, cover, etc.) of the Technical Report, which is almost finished by now. I am collecting and choosing all the views, sketches and lists that we have done all along the year, for including them in the final document.

10th of June 2013 Today Rosa fixed the deadline for giving in the Technical Report: Wednesday the 19th of June. She also gave us an index with all the items we had to include in the report. One of them was a photo of the robot with all the connections labeled. David and Guillermo fixed an antenna that had gone away of the robot. Before the bell rang, Fabin went away without asking for permission and having returned the box of materials and the tools to the shelf.

13th of June 2013 Today, as we had a Technologies exam about Materials, Electricity, Metals, Structures and the robot, we didn't work on the project.

17th of June 2013 Today we did an exercise about how we thought each member of our team has worked all throughout the year. After this, Rosa gave us some tasks that she wanted us to keep and we went to the workshop to face our last Technologies class. We then voted the percentages of work in our team (see page 25) and fixed the insect to the robot. This afternoon there was en exposition at the high school where our robots were shown and explained in detail.

VII Final Results and Evaluation

The robot we have done this year has an appearance of a ladybug, but without colours. We have done (as you have seen before) an insect with diverse material to cover the robot's circuit and make it look more "real". The chief of the Technologies Department, Juan Manuel Delgado, adapted an idea from a web and made 3 prototypes, which have led to our final design. The percentages of work in our team are as follows: Carlos Taboada .. 15% Miguel Frognier .. 25% Guillermo Gonzlez . 15% David Salces 15% Jaime Fernndez . 15% Fabin Morata . 15%
