ENGLISH Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd 1 Kings 21:110, 1521, Galatians 2:1521, Luke 7:368:3 June 16, 2013 4th Sunday After Pentecost Brothers and sisters, I have good news! Christ lives in you. And just like each of you here, Christ lives in me. I stand up here confident of this for many reasons, but there is one that I would like to share with you: Ive learned so much from you and you, in so many ways, are a reflection of Christ. In so many ways you have lived out the characteristics we cherish in Christ: love, compassion, honesty, humility, and graciousness. Over the past three years Ive been able to learn from you, from the Christ incarnate here at Good Shepherd. And so, Id like to share20 lessons Ive learned during my time here, because I think its important for you to hear how youve lived out Gods love, both as individuals and as a congregation. Ive learned that 1. All congregations are different as they live out the gospel message. Good Shepherd is no exception but it isuniquely challenging. 2. My first call as a congregational pastor has thus offered more responsibility (and unique challenges) than I could have ever imagined. 3. Before beginning this call, I knew that the challenge is not to run a church. The church is not a business. But Ivelearned that unearthing God-given talents or individual interests, and finding ways for those to rise up as the tangible presence of Christ, is a slow process. 4. Being in control isnt the challenge as a pastor its an impossibility ... Its Gods job to be in control. 5. Our job, orchallenge, then,as a church, is to listen attentively to how the Spirit is moving Gods people. 6. Though we try our best to do this, the sometimes-painful truth is that pastors can be wrongsometimes councils can be wrongand sometimes even members and friends can be wrong.

7. Sometimes language and cultural barriers disappear when talking about God. At other times, these linguistic and cultural differences rise up and make the need for Gods grace clear and tangible. 8. Perspectives on faith, God, tradition, Jesus, and the church are as diverse as there are people gathered here. 9. Five liturgies, nine Creeds, seven Confessions, and 238 hymns is a good start to unifying our voices and celebrating Gods love for us through worship. 10. Review the liturgy and then practice and then practice some more, especially when it comes to stripping the altar on Good Friday. 11. The Spirit mysteriously unifies ourdiverse perspectives when we gather around Christs table, and remember to whom we belong. 12. Lutherans belong at potlucks. Ive learned that potlucks are potlucks, no matter where you are. Though potlucks here are spicier than in the U.S., occasionally involve a hair dryer, and can last until 8 in the evening, but potlucks are potlucks. 13. Dont pretend to know all the answersunless its really necessary. 14. We might be part of an institutional church, but our faith journey is lived out in the most personal of ways. The church is a point of contact on this journey. 15. It takes a year to know a church and finally feel like you know what youre doing! 16. During that first year or so I learned that pastors, councils, members, and friends all experience Gods grace and others forgiveness in unexpected ways. 17. Communication happens all the time. Good communication happens several times before there is understanding. When good communication breaks down, prayer and time are the only other options. 18. Never make promises that cant be kept. Never make assumptions about someone or a situation. [See good communication] 19. Our plans and time lines dont always match up with Gods. It is precisely when theydont match up that we grow in faith. 20. And finally, Ive learned to stop, listen, pray, and give thanks, because in so many ways this church lives out Gods love for the world through Christ incarnate. And thanks be to God for that.

Amen.

Rev. He aprendido que ... 1.

Amen
