CEPT University offers Doctoral program three years duration in the areas of design,
architecture, planning and technology.

All of its academic programs are recognized nationally and internationally for their
excellence. CEPT has highly qualified faculty known for its contributions in academics and
research. CEPT has exchange programs with several institutions internationally.
All programs are approved by the State government and AICTE. All undergraduate
programs are funded by the State government and the postgraduate programs except the
last three are funded by AICTE.

CEPT campus covering about nine acres is in the vicinity of prestigious educational
institutions in Arts, Science, Commerce, Pharmacy, Management and Computer
Applications. Other institutions housed on the campus are Vikram Sarabhai Community
Science Centre, Kanoria Centre for Arts, Hutheesingh Visual Arts Centre and the Amdavadni
Gufa. The Ahmedabad Education Society has allotted another twenty- five acres of land in
the vicinity.

PROGRAM

The Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University , offers a two years Masters Program in
Urban Design. The Masters Program in Urban Design is an approved program recognized
by the AICTE, Government of India.

GOALS

The city is an expression of the best in human potential. It expresses the societal order that
man evolved to house his institutions and act as a mediator between man and nature. The
art of city planning and urban design is closely co-related to the development of human
civilization itself.

In the present, as societies have become more and more complex and heterogeneous, with
rapid changes and demands on growth, the city has been increasingly under pressure. The
multiple dimensions of Regional and Urban Planning, and the act of individual building that
constitutes Architecture, sadly lack the clarity and cohesion of urban structure and form.
More than anywhere else this glaring gap is most evident in the Indian city with its
uncontrolled and chaotic development, loss of coherence and character, and decreasing
quality of urban life. Urban planning continues to be two dimensional, and architecture an
isolated and often unrelated individual act.

The program in Urban Design at the School attempts to mediate between Urban Planning
and Architecture, and attempts to establish:
• the study base- of components and structural relationships of the Indian city, past and
present through research and analysis.
• the methods- of tools and techniques by which the existing chaos can be alleviated and
coherence and quality established in the urban environment.
• through three dimensional planning and control of sectors of the city, in its development
plans.
• through regulations and controls that are sympathetic to the creation of a coherent urban
environment.
• the design skills - of establishing rich and variant order, that permits individual variations
within it, and creates quality of experience in the large and immediate scales of the urban
milieu.

OBJECTIVES AND POLICY STATEMENTS

1. The program is not merely research based but emphasizes the need to translate
research finding into the design. The student by the end of the course should
demonstrate his/her ability to conceptualize, investigate and synthesize environmental
objectives, design methods, and contextual issues at urban scale.
2. To enable students to acquire skills to assume professional practice responsibilities. The
program is directed towards students who wish either to practice in a traditional
architectural role with a greater understanding of urban contextual influence in design or
to pursue an Urban Design consulting career.
3. To equip students to set “their agenda for Urban Design”. In this process the role of the
faculty is essentially not prescriptive but to provoke and only rarely guide. Students
should strive to achieve this by intense field observation, rigorous analysis, contemplation
and design exploration.
4. To establish that Urban Design is not synonymous to a large Architectural Project. The
design act may mean designing of a building, demolition or a piece of legislation.
5. Urban Design is multi-disciplinary and requires close working with professionals of
diverse disciplines including the government.
6. To serve as the intellectual resource center in Urban Design.
7. To offer Consultancy/Advisory services.
8. To disseminate knowledge base.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The program is structured into four semesters and two summers.

The first semester emphasizes on understanding urbanization and urbanism. City- its
morphology, determinants, relationships, activities, history and methods of analysis. It also
attempts to combine ‘Design’ with the complimentary ‘Developmental’ process.

The second semester attempts to synthesize the multiple determinants and developmental
processes along with the enabling tools and mechanisms. Urban Design is seen as a part of
a larger system. Particular emphasis is on understanding environmental factors, human
intervention and historicity.

The first summer expects the students to document and analyze relevant urban design
projects in the Indian context. This is to form the base for deliberations in the Urban Design
Theory course in Semester III.

The third semester attempts to build up the understanding of the complexity of the city. It
attempts to define the role for Urban Design in our development process. The resolutions are
expected to address all issues from conception to realization.

The design thesis in the final semester expects the students to demonstrate their abilities to
conceptualize, investigate and synthesize urban/environmental objectives, design methods
and contextual issues at an urban scale.

The second summer offers an option of research or an internship. This is in recognition that
graduates opt for teaching/research positions as much as assume professional practice
roles.

1ST YEAR

Urban Studies, Design Development Studio : Aims at “ Reading an Urban Fabric “ and
also to understand determinants and causative forces responsible for urban growth and
change - the resulting physical manifestations- development process.
