ELEN 7018 EARTHING AND LIGHTNING PROTECTION

Class Project - 2013

You are a lightning protection designer, working for an independent consulting company. Your services have been retained to undertake a high level design of the earthing and lightning protection system for a soccer field/stadium located in Mpumalnga province close to Ermelo. A soil survey has revealed that the soil has a resistivity of between 950 m and 1500 m. Generally the soil is sandy and loose. The area has summer rainfall, which can be very heavy. The soil drains easily. The soccer pitch is located in a relatively open field. There are 4 floodlights located on each corner of the pitch. The pitch is surrounded by uncovered spectator seats. The stadium can seat 4000 spectators. In close proximity to the stadium there are located a number of shops and food outlets. You are to prepare a high level design document for this project. In order to do this, you must assume reasonable sizes (m2) for the relevant site areas although this is not critical to the successful completion of the project. You will also need to make some assumptions about the size and capacity of the renewable energy systems. Your design must consider in particular the requirement of the ELPS, ILPS, cabling strategies, zone boundaries, and the integration of the renewable energy supplies and so on. Detailed calculations for likely induced currents and voltages and the appropriate risk assessments must be included with your report. It is essential that the physical processes involved are described in order that the basis of your design is fully understood. The report must be sufficiently detailed to allow a colleague to adequately specify the requirements of the LPS, and must include: evidence of having followed the complete LPS design flow as it applies to this specific project (only the aspect of the cable runs). evidence of having treated the entire site to be protected as a system and follow a holistic lightning protection strategy. the design must ensure a long-term solution as well as an overall safety policy/procedure in the case of a thunderstorm. mark ups and sketches for the site and any relevant subsystems so that it can be unambiguously interpreted by the architects, engineers and even installation technicians to implement your design which would include (as appropriate): o earth electrode o bonding conductors o air termination system o down conductor system o rating and location of SPDs o definition of zone boundaries o etc a comprehensive list of relevant literature and standards referenced

ELEN 7018 EARTHING AND LIGHTNING PROTECTION Note that your complete report may not exceed 20 typed pages (excluding appendices and drawings). You must justify aspects of your argument by reference to papers, standards or recommended practices (which may even be internal documents to your organisation). Be sure, however, to test any internal guidelines against theory learnt on this course. The project report must be completed in accordance with the guidelines for report writing that are used in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering. Reports that do not comply with this requirement will not be assessed, and a failing mark will be recorded. The course project will contribute 70% to the final mark. Tackling the daily questions will contribute 30%. Your solutions to the daily questions must be appended to the back of the class project when you submit it. Submission date is 30 April. Submission time is 12h00. The projects submitted via the red Submission Box at Reception of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering.
