The ABC seal is a dry seal congured of split rings. It is used in many devices_such as air blowers, centrifuges, mixers and instruments handling powders - as a shaft seal unit.

Conguration and seal principle /

The ABC seal is a oating type seal congured of split rings, tted to the shaft using garter springs. The ABC seal follows the runout of the shaft. The typical conguration of an ABC seal is one that combines two sets of ABC rings to make a double seal. The barrier box between the ABC rings is pressurized to a pressure approximately 0.02MpaG higher than the purge gas induced pressure inside the device. This pressure dierence prevents ow material (uid) leaking out of the vessel into the atmosphere.

The ABC seal accommodates vessels with rough accuracy in areas such as axial runout and locomotion. The ABC seal is maintenance free because it has an automatic follow conguration that works even if it becomes worn. The ABC seal has an average lifespan of approximately ve years, which means that it is eective in keeping running costs low.

ABC ring types and combinations /

The following are the three types of ABC rings.
C ring R ring W ring

This ring has a small gap between the bore surface of the ring and the shaft.

This ring's bore surface is in contact with the shaft, but has gaps of approximately 1mm at the split points.

This ring has an additional outer ring on the outside of the R-ring to enhance seal performance.

The red line in the diagram above denotes the gap between the ring and shaft. The smaller the gap is the smaller the amount of purge gas needed.

Cartridge type ABC seal unit /

Note that in specications where the ABC ring inner circumference is in contact with the shaft or sleeve, a hard coating is required, in order to reduce the wear of that surface.

The above device is a screw extruder. The photo of the vessel using gland packing reveals white powder scattered about the exterior of the device. However, the photo after the conversion to ABC seal shows no white powder, which is an improvement to the work environment.

Purge gas control /

Purge gas pressure must be con trolled properly to ensure correct operation of the ABC seal. The purge gas must be maintained at a pressure of 0.02MpaG greater than the pressure inside the vessel. If purge gas pressure drops below that of the pressure inside the vessel, the powder and gas in the vessel will leak out.

OptionBlow system for molten uid /

When the vessel in question is handling a molten uid, there are times when blowing o is not possible with the ABC ring's purge gas. In such cases, install divided bushing, as shown below, to close o the contents inside the device, and increase purge gas ow speed, to enable a forceful blow.
