Hierarchy and Self-Management

Leadership as a Single Reality

Hierarchy and Self-Management

We all have great qualities and characteristics that differentiate us from others, and this is what sets us apart and makes us unique. When we join a company, we are excited about the possibilities that the junction between our abilities and opportunities in the company can bring to us. From this moment, unnoticed to most of us, the connections begin to be created between us and our peers at work, and when dealing with relationships, nothing is predictable. At various times, when dealing with our leaders and our other pairs, we wonder why we are not leading, or at least, cannot decide how our own assignments should be conducted, after all, no one better than us to know how to take care of our own responsibilities. At this point, we realize that there are different forms of leadership in the world of management:

1. Leadership as hierarchy. The pattern that prevails in the world for millennia, in which a person is responsible for leading a group of individuals, providing all the necessary support to facilitate the achievement of a common goal. 2. Leadership as self-management. A model that is relatively new, in which each individual of a group coordinate his own actions and fulfill his responsibilities without the direct intervention of another individual.

The market sees as models for different types of company. Some adopt the first model, others adopt the second model, and there are still those who strive to merge the two models of leadership. The perspective, in other words, how executive leaders see this concept of "leadership models", has a crucial role in understanding the reality. There is no real segregation between these two practices, in reality they do not even represent distinct factors. Rather, they are variables of the same reality, regardless of the nomenclature adopted.

Single Reality
The reality is formed by one or more common goals and a set of actions and almost endless possibilities to achieve it, all available to be conducted by any individual, preferably those who identify with the goals and the actions in question. In this scenario, we can fit individuals to conduct these actions, and there is no segregation between self-management and leadership of the group, both are intrinsic to achieving the goal. It is essential that each individual have the freedom to focus on himself or herself, because it is at this point that is possible to leverage its own strengths. Thus, when we look at a group of individuals isolated in their own leadership, we are seeing in fact, people exploring their potential and accumulating lots of positive energy. This is the result of individual leadership, or self-management. It is in this way that each individual becomes irreplaceable, having a unique value to add to the group and reach the goal. However, this accumulated energy and potential explored individually need to have a direction and be coordinated in line with those of other members of the group to achieve a higher goal. In this case, the group leadership proves essential because only through it can generate synergy with all the potential energy stored and explored. We are all leaders at various times in our lives, and in different ways. It is crucial to understand that leadership is movable and changeable, i.e., at a given moment I am leading my son on a specific matter. At the same moment, he can suddenly lead me through another demand. Both of us are also leaders of ourselves while we are taking our own decisions and reflecting on our lives, and to achieve something bigger, we must be aware that it is necessary to use synergy with other people, because only then we can extrapolate our momentary limitations. The individual leadership is critical to allow, through a group leader, all beyond their own boundaries and reach a greater goal, as the real leader of the group know who makes it all happen are the other members, not himself.

Conclusion
Self-management should not only be encouraged, but also supported by the company, as it is a crucial time to build the professional as a unique aggregator. The group leadership is crucial to extract all the forces enhanced by each individual and direct in the most appropriate way to achieve the goal. In our search for the best practice, we often forget that there is no categorization, segregation, better or worse, only the reality of our day-to-day, and this is our challenge. We must see the role of each variable, second after second in our day-to-day, and thousands of possibilities to which the manipulation of these variables can lead us.
