ts official. Were working on the Almanac. For those of you unfamiliar, the Almanac is our annual magazine designed to alert readers to everything and anything in Claremont. It tells you what to do, where to go and who to call for fun, services and volunteering. The elder Weinberger called it a journal of ideas and pleasures. For all things Claremont, of course.

The Almanac has always been our most inspired annual undertaking. At around 100 pages, it can certainly test our patience, and the fact that its published in the hot summer months certainly doesnt help matters. Yet the thrill of seeing our work in print certainly makes up for the added pressure. Its a labor of love, as they say. Our tradition will continue this year, but weve opted to spin it a bit. In addition to the typical community listings, we invite community input on what we, Claremonters, like best about our fair town. Night spots, galleries, parks and coffee shops are all on the ballot. See page 3 of todays COURIER for your entry form.

Ballots can be mailed, emailed or hand-delivered to our office at 1420 N. Claremont Blvd., Suite 205 B. If you are so inclined, stop by our booth at the Wednesday Night Family Festival and let us know what you think. And, the very techsavvy Peter Weinberger has set up an email address at bestof@claremont-courier.com where the younger set (or the young at heart) can simply email ballots. Weve added a feature for 2010 and are hard at work to determine the top ten Claremont newsmakers this year. This decision will ultimately be left to the editorial staff, but we welcome suggestions. If you have a nominee, I encourage you to email me at editor@claremont-courier.com. My hope is that this years journal will be one for all of us. I invite you to take part in the Almanac.

Paying for our community
Dear Editor: I am grateful for Steven Harrisons letter (The Teacher Tax, COURIER, June 5th) suggesting the need for citizens to rethink their relationship to the wider community. It brought to mind Oliver Wendell Holmes dictum that every time I pay my taxes I feel that I have bought a share of civilization. Such a sentiment may draw hoots in our cynical age exclusively devotedit often seemsto me and mine, but it deserves consideration. We are, in fact, herd animals. No one gets there by himself or herself. There are always individuals or institutions that provide the necessary direction and inspiration for achievement. As we hack away at our lifelines (education, environment, welfare) we would do well to recall another important observationthat by Arnold Toynbee: civilizations do not die, they commit suicide.

Police still searching for kidnapping suspect

olice have issued a public warning over an attempted kidnapping that occurred early Friday morning in the city.

At about 12:00 a.m., a 20-year-old Claremont woman was walking to her car in the parking lot of the Plum Tree Apartments in the 800 block of West Bonita Avenue. The woman saw a man near her car when he asked her for a cigarette. He then approached and grabbed her by the elbow asking her, to come hang out with him, Claremont Police Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen said. The woman pulled her arm away from the

man and told him to leave her alone. She immediately walked back to her apartment. Believing the man left the area, she walked back to her car a short time later. The man was again sitting near her car and grabbed her with both arms, pinning her up against a vehicle. The woman struggled and screamed but was not able to free herself. The attacker dragged the woman by the arms for about 7 feet before she punched him in the face. He grabbed his face and stumbled backwards, Lt. Vander Veen said. During that time, she was able to get away. The victim ran to her car and drove around for

about 45 minutes before returning home and calling police. She was not injured as a result of the attack. The suspect was described as a white male, 6 feet tall, 200 to 240 pounds, in his late 20s, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The victim did the appropriate thing by not going with the suspect and by doing what she did in order to get away, Lt. Vander Veen said. Lt. Vander Veen also recommended that residents always carry a cell phone when walking alone at night and report suspicious individuals to police. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Claremont Police Department immediately at 399-5415.

Claremont bank robbery suspect CUSD, CFA back arrested in Orange County in negotiations
Police officials in Orange County have arrested a man they believe robbed the Citibank in the Old School House last month. Erik von Holland, 47, was arrested earlier this week at his home in Brea on suspicion of robbing the Citibank and 3 other banks in Orange County, according to Claremont police. Called the 100s and armed bandit by law enforcement, Mr. Holland was identified through surveillance photographs taken of him during the heists. He wore baseball hats during the robberies but otherwise did not conceal his appearance. Mr. Holland was identified by the Tustin Police Department while police were showing surveillance photos to Orange County parole agents. A parole agent recognized the suspect and provided a name to police. He was arrested by Orange and Fullerton police officials at his residence. The involved agencies are working with the FBI with the intention of filing multiple federal counts of bank robbery against him. The Claremont robbery took place on Friday, May 21.

he Claremont Unified School District and Claremont Faculty Association bargaining teams were back at the table last Friday under a new state-appointed mediator. Negotiations are scheduled to continue this Friday as the district and the teachers union hope to resume talks after the district declared an impasse at the April 22nd CUSD Board of Education meeting. Both CUSD Superintendent Terry Nichols and CFA Bargaining Chair Joe Tonan said they could not discuss details of last Fridays meeting.

Award program recognizes Claremonts best architecture

This home owned by Claremont Graduate University won a design award for the addition of a two-car garage that reflects the design elements of the homes original craftsman-style architecture.

A
awards.

total of 7 projects in Claremont have been chosen by the citys Architectural Commission for the 2009 Excellence in Design

Established in 1980, the award program was created to recognize and encourage high quality urban design projects in the city. Among the winners are the new building at Foothill Boulevard and Mills Avenue where convenience store 7-Eleven was hoping to open shop. Winning in the category of New Construction, the building features metal roofing, clear glass materials at every elevation to accent the building and door placement that allows pedestrian access from both Foothill Boulevard and the parking area to the north. They did a nice job on modern architecture in a high traffic area, said Architectural Commissioner James Manifold. There are no tenants yet unfortunately, but its a nice building. Honnold Library at the Claremont Colleges was recognized in the category of Renovation. For over 20 years, a garden wall hindered access to the library and the use of a small outdoor area/rose garden. To revitalize the area, the garden wall was removed and the historical stairs and walls were restored to incorporate the current topography and traffic circulation. The south entrance and patio area were also restored and transformed into a pedestrian access and gathering point. The Biszantz Family Tennis Center at Claremont McKenna College won in the categories of New Construction and Sustainability. The 12 tennis courts have bleachers for viewers, a multi-functional clubhouse and a Crows Nest that is used as an observation deck. Commissioners were impressed with the projects landscaping design that features numerous Coast Live Oak trees, shrubs and other native trees that require less water usage. The McDermott Building at 655 E. Foothill Boulevard also won in the category of Sustainable Landscaping. The original art studio of Millard Sheets was re-landscaped using numerous drought-tolerant plant species and meandering walkways for visitors. Two projects won in the category of Addition. Located at 1102 N. College Avenue, the Claremont Graduate University residence by Wheeler and Wheeler Architects features a new, detached 2-car garage. A project by HartmanBaldwin Design/Build, the Shafer residence at 3798 Vincennes Court, involves the construction of a new detached COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff pool cabana with a kitchen facility, a guest bathroom and full media Honnold Library on Dartmouth Avenue received a 2009 Excellence in Design Award from hook-up capability. the Claremont Architectural Commission for the extensive renovation that included the The final winner is the Sicilian Court on the campus of Scripps redesign of the south entrance and patio area. Exploring new ways to harness the suns energy

hree students from Harvey Mudd College and 3 students from the Birla Institute of Technology in India are working to put solar energy to practical use.

The collaboration between the 6 students over the next year will address the challenge of finding a way to harness solar energy to benefit impoverished and rural citizens of India. The project is especially intended for areas of the country not connected to a power grid. Its a good project, said Lisette de Pillis, director of Harvey Mudd Colleges Global Clinic. There is a lot of sun in India and it gets very hot there. So the students will be looking for a creative way to harness the power of the sun in a way that will be very affordable for the people. Solar panels are too expensive and we cant use traditional ways of storing energy. Hufsa Ahmad, Jennifer Lee and Andrew Xue are representing Harvey Mudd while Siddharth Menon, Siddharth Murarka and Abhishek Sadany make up the trio from Birla Institute. According to Mr. Xue, the team has already been pondering several ideas. One idea that we had was to take a large chunk of soil and heat it up 80 degrees Celsius while padding the whole thing with straw, he explained. Then we

can draw the heat out of the soil and [from there] look into what we would use the heat for. But right now, were looking into how to store the energy. The partnership between the 2 schools kicked off on May 15th when Ms. Ahmad, Ms. Lee and Mr. Xue traveled to Mesra, India for 3 weeks to begin a 6week exchange. Arriving back in Claremont over the weekend, the HMC trio will now host Mr. Menon, Mr. Murarka and Mr. Sadany for the next 3 weeks. From there, the 2 groups will stay in communication via teleconferencing. If the group can create heat storage using solar energy, the result would be a source citizens of India could use for lighting, heating and cooling, refrigeration and electricity. Mr. Menon is confident the collaboration will result in a solution.

Our strengths and their strengths merge very well, he said. We have a whole year and by May of next year, we should be done with something. Were getting along very well. Started in 2005, the Global Clinic Program is an extension of the colleges Clinic Program that has existed since the 1960s. The mission of the Global Clinic Program is to prepare students to help provide solutions within a global context using engineering and science. We need many more countries working together on big problems, said Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe. Its quite unusual for students to get to exit their own bubble and experience other countries bubbles. We live in a place today where the world has to collaborate among different cultures. The current partnership between Harvey Mudd College and the Birla Institute of Technology was recognized at a Global Clinic reception on Monday. Other Harvey Mudd collaborations with the National University of Singapore, Bio-Rad Laboratories and Operation Hope Foundation were also celebrated at the event. Due to a $1 million endowment by the Vickery family, the Global Clinic Program will be funded for the near future. HMC graduate John Vickery spoke about his Clinic Program experiences at Mondays reception. I am absolutely thrilled that my family is able to do this, Mr. Vickery said. I do remember the things I got out of my Clinic experienceit changed my life.

Old car, new adventure:

Claremont couple drives the Mother Road

hen you have a car like Wes and Sharon Marquisa 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe 2Door Town Sedandriving it across Historic Route 66 is almost a given.

It comes up in conversation, said Mr. Marquis, and it becomes something you kind of have to do. And so, 8 years after purchasing the sleek, black, vintage car, the Marquis duo hit the road on May 11, feeling giddy about their impending 2,321-mile expedition on the Mother Road. There was a feeling of excitement, said Ms. Marquis. Its something weve wanted to do, and we were doing it. An auspicious year to embark on the long-imagined adventure, both car and owner reached a 2010 milestone. I turned 70, the car is 70, said Mr. Marquis. Teasing, his wife approached the correlating ages with more apprehension than celebration. Im going on a trip with a 70-year-old man in a 70-year-old car? What am I thinking? she mused. Wanting to do it right, the Marquises paid a transport service to carry their car from Claremont to Chicago, the birthplace of the historic road and the only true starting point according to hardcore 66ers. The real roadies dont count (Los Angeles to Chicago). Chicago to LA, thats the true trip on the Mother Road, said Mr. Marquis. Also hitching a ride in the massive transport truck was the classic car of Ms. Marquis brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Diane Ferguson of Claremont. In their 1947 Cadillac Convertible, they also traveled Route 66, at times caravanning with the Marquises and at times cruising solo. Earning its nickname, Mother Road, after John

Steinbeck called it such in his classic novel, The Grapes of Wrath, Route 66 stands as a symbol of opportunity and freedom, linking small towns of the Midwest with 2 of the countrys biggest cities. Launched in 1926 with progress halting shortly thereafter due to the Depression, the 2,300-mile paved road was finally complete in 1938. Soon, hun-

dreds of thousands of people used it to escape the dust bowl of the Midwest. During World War II, the new super-highway was invaluable in the transportation of troops, equipment and goods to California, a hub of wartime industry and bases; it

was also vital in transporting troops home after the war. Whatever the reason, the Mother Road is an experience, a feeling, a perception, a taste of sight and sound, and a mystery that can only be resolved by driving the pavement itself, proposed www.legendsofamerica.com. Mr. Marquis, having retired from his posts as chief warrant officer in the U.S. NAVY and senior vice president at American Building Maintenance (ABM), meticulously prepared for their escapade. For each day of their 10-day journey, a detailed itinerary including From, To, Distance and Sights to see guided their journey. But open to possibility and spontaneity, they were comfortable with minor deviations from the plan. There was a lot we didnt expect that was pleasurable, noted Ms. Marquis, who retired in 2007 after 35 years with Macys department store (formerly Broadway). The most thrilling unexpected element of the trip was the superior performance of the 1940 Chevrolet, which suffered not a single problem over the 2,000plus miles: shocking, said Mr. Marquis, a member of the CAL-RODS Car Club. Rarely driving for more than one hour at a time through dramatically changing scenerymetropolitan areas gave way to quiet meandering roads to sprawling grass prairies and farmlandMr. and Mrs. Marquis made their way to the dozens of sights to see on their agenda: the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum; the Gemini Giant; Tall Paul, the Muffler Man (who, much to their amusement, was holding an over-sized hotdog instead of a muffler); the Route 66 National Museum, which contained a car just like theirs; and many, many more places. You hear things and you read about things, and it

doesnt seem like such a big deal, but then when youre there, its a whole different story, said Mr. Marquis. Meals along the Mother Road were also exciting, providing much more than the satisfaction of a basic need. A line-up of historical cafes delighted their palates and made their spirits merry with their downhome hospitality and catchy names such as Back in the Day Caf, The food was definitely a highlight. It was excellent, said Ms. Marquis, praising the peanut butter chocolate pie served at the Midpoint Caf in Adrian, Texas: And Im particular about my pie. More than victuals, it was the people the Marquises encountered along the way that made the adventure extra special: the 82-year old man who gave them a tour of an old, round, red barn; the caf owner who insisted they enjoy their coffee free of charge; the gas station owner who mailed them their left-behind gas cap. When you get out of the mainstream, people are different. On the interstate, they are in business for business, and theres no human connection, said Ms. Marquis. Most of the people [along Route 66] are of an older generation, they seem to be more personable, said Mr. Marquis, adding to his wifes sentiment. The road itself posed the greatest challenges on the otherwise charmed trip (they missed being pummeled by baseball-sized hail in Oklahoma by one day, for example, and despite hours of close quarters

in the car, we didnt have any knockem down, dragem out fights! said Ms. Marquis). Dilapidated stretches of Route 66 sometimes forced them onto the interstate that runs almost parallel and, at times, the historic road would simply end without warning, necessitating a U-turn and renavigation. But you really want to be on the old road. Thats what its all about, said Mr. Marquis, whose vintage car has won numerous trophies, including multiple victories from the Village Grilles Cruise Night in the Claremont Village. Both Mr. and Mrs. Marquis, who will reach their 50th wedding anniversary this September, noted the good vibes that endured from mile one to mile 2,321. It felt so good to be removed from the world, said Ms. Marquis. There was this feeling of contentment the whole way. Youre there. This is where it all happened. I carried that feeling the whole time, said Mr. Marquis. Pausing to consider whether or not she would tackle Route 66 again, Ms. Marquis gave the idea a tentative yes: Probably, if he wanted to, she said, giving her partner in adventure a nod. And would he? Absolutely, Mr. Marquis said without a moments hesitation. It was a dream come true.

SUPPORT CLAREMONTS FANTASTIC FOURTH The Claremont Independence Day Committee has been hard at work raising revenues needed to host the 62nd Annual 4th of July Celebration. Unfortunately, the committee has not yet reached its goal to offset the costs for the event. Claremont residents are asked to visit Liberty Mutuals website at http://www.libertymutualgroup.com and answer a short 8 answer Bring Back the 4th contest quiz to help the city earn a $10,000 grant to help pay for the Fourth. The contest deadline is Monday, June 14th. The Claremont Kiwanis will once again kick off the July 4th holiday with a pancake breakfast held at Memorial Park from 7 to 10 a.m. to coincide with the city-sponsored 5k walk/run. Breakfast consists of pancakes, sausage, coffee, juice, milk, for just $4. Following the breakfast, Kiwanis will move to the college field, for the fireworks show where they will run a snack bar with hot food and drinks. All monies

raised help pay for entertainment at the fireworks show and also goes toward the Monday night concert series held at Memorial Park. The concerts are fully funded by monies raised at the Kiwanis snack bar, so enjoy your snacks and know that your money serves the greater good in the community. Jerry Feingold, publicity chair of Kiwanis, notes that any additional money earned is donated into various community projects. REMEMBERING WILLARD It was June 10, 2009 that T. Willard Hunter wrote: Our Fortunes: When we uphold the Declaration of Independence next month, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor. Too often we forget that our fortunes means we give up

enough of our personal resources and pay enough money in taxes to support our freedoms. t.willard. CLAREMONT UNIVERSITY CLUB William Forti has been installed as president of the Claremont University Club. He will serve for the 201011 fiscal year. Mr. Forti, a Claremont resident, heads the William Mark Corporation of Upland, makers of a variety of flying toys. Other officers for the year are Art Parker, vice president; Al Leiga, immediate past president; John Felton, treasurer; all of Claremont; Bill Emrich of Upland, assistant treasurer; Anne Sonner of Walnut, secretary; Shelby Forrest of Upland, assistant secretary; and Bob Haage of Montclair, historian. Directors are Ken Horner, John Najarian, Rich Phillips, Bob Smith, Mr. Parker and Mr. Leiga, all of Claremont; Art Sutton of Pomona and Beverly Carpenter of Upland. The club meets every Tuesday noon in the Alexander Hughes Community Center in Claremont for lunch and a program. The meetings are open to the public. IN ACADEMIA Andrew Hacker, son of Art and Kathy Hacker of Claremont, recently received his Juris Doctor degree from the Sandra Day OConnor School of Law at Arizona State University. While at ASU, Andrew served as associate editor of the law journal and as an officer of the student bar association. Haley Jensen of Claremont, graduated May 15 from Rice University. Ms. Jensen received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. VILLAGE ACCESSIBILITY PROJECT It isnt welcomed by all downtown business owners, but the sidewalk project resumed Monday. Expect intermittent store and street closures during the following schedule: Through June 10: North side of Second Street from Yale Avenue to Harvard Avenue. Curb, gutter, sidewalk and handicap ramps will be replaced. There will be a street closure. June 14-17: Both sides of Harvard Avenue from First Street to Second Street. Portions of sidewalk on east side and all sidewalk on the west side will be replaced. Also, the curb height will be adjusted on the west side. There will be a street closure. June 21-24: South side of Second Street from Yale Avenue to Harvard Avenue. Curb, gutter, sidewalk and handicap ramps will be replaced. There will be a street closure.
