MIMO Channel Modelling and Performance Analysis of MIMO-OFDM Systems

Background A long standing key challenge facing future wireless communications is to provide high data rate wireless communication services with maximum reliability. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems have received considerable attention for their significant gains over single-antenna systems. MIMO systems employing multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver can provide higher data rates through multiplexing and improve the system performance through diversity. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the most promising physical layer technologies for high data rate wireless communications due to its robustness to frequency-selective fading, high spectral efficiency, and low computational complexity. The combination of MIMO techniques with OFDM is regarded as a promising solution for increasing data rates and wireless access qualities of future wireless local area networks and 4th generation wireless communication systems. In a mobile system, the channel changes fast due to the mobility and the environment. In order to predict, simulate, and design MIMO wireless communication systems; it is therefore of great importance to characterize and model MIMO channels for different propagation scenarios. The simulation of MIMO propagation channels can also assist in the choice of efficient modulation schemes under different scenarios.

Planned Research The main objective of the research project is modelling, analysis, and simulation of MIMO channels. In the MIMO channel models to be developed, the line-of-sight component will be taken into account as a special case. The stochastic reference models for MIMO channels will be developed for different typical propagation environments. It is also planned to analyse the important statistical properties of the developed models such as the temporal correlation function, the spatial correlation function, and the frequency correlation function, which completely describe the MIMO channel models. Considering the system level simulation, the channel simulator will be obtained by using the principle of deterministic channel modelling. The research project also aims to analyse the performance of the MIMO-OFDM system (Fig.1) using the developed MIMO channel simulators. The performance analysis will give insight into the impact of important channel parameters, channel correlation characteristics, and the channel model error on the system performance.

Fig. 1: Block diagram of a space-time coded MIMO-OFDM system The main elements of the planned research project include: 1. Develop frequency-selective MIMO fading channels. Develop reference and simulation models for frequency-selective MIMO mobile fading channels. Analyse the impact of the channel model error on the MIMO-OFDM system performance. 2. Develop spatial channel models (SCMs) for different propagation environments. Analyse the statistical properties of SCMs. Develop SCMs for frequency-selective MIMO fading channels. Study the MIMO-OFDM system performance using SCMs for different environments. 3. Develop non-geometry-based MIMO channel models for real-world propagation scenarios and measured channels. 4. Develop multi-user MIMO channel models. PhD Student The PhD student working on this topic at UiA is Miss Yuanyuan Ma.
