Product Brief Nortel BSC 3000 and TCU 3000

Nortels Base Station Controller 3000 (BSC 3000) and Nortels TransCoder Unit 3000 (TCU 3000) are designed to address the market requirements for capacity, connectivity and concentration in a condensed space. The application of high-density switching and control processing has resulted in marketleading products that offer the most capacity in the smallest space. management of the same OMC-R (Operations and maintenance CenterRadio). It offers an evolution path that enables both growth and feature support to cope efficiently with operators requirements. The BSC 3000 offers high capacity and connectivity while delivering efficient radio resource management and call quality, particularly through the support of AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate codec) and EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution). When it comes to offering service differentiation in the market, the BSC 3000 will not let you down.
Customer satisfaction through high reliability

BSC 3000
High capacity, connectivity and flexibility

The BSC 3000 answers the GSM densification market needs. Designed to meet increasing traffic demands both for voice and data, the single cabinet BSC can grow from a traffic capacity of 600 Erlangs up to 3,000 Erlangs1 simply by adding additional traffic management units. This scalable and modular platform allows a pay-as-you-need strategy. To ensure a smooth introduction, the BSC 3000 coexists with the existing BSC2G (Base Station Controller 2nd Generation) and TCU2G (TransCoder Unit 2nd Generation) under the

The BSC 3000 has been designed to provide carrier-grade availability, with a target of 99.999 percent, translating into an average of five minutes downtime per year. This high reliability is achieved by a fault-tolerant architecture and full redundancy (redundancy as 1+1 hot standby or N+P load sharing) for all hardware modules, including the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) interface modules. The extremely high MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) and the quick location and correction of any

problem via the sophisticated diagnostic system aim to ensure that service is rarely affected. This enables the operator to reach operational efficiency targets while meeting the high standards demanded from the market, and provides end users with the ultimate service experience.

or enabling in the near future the BTS SW background downloading. The BSC 3000 reduces significantly the operating costs in terms of real estate and maintenance, relieving the pressure on floor space for other systems such as UMTS. The BSC 3000 results in a lower cost of ownership, improves the bottom line and in turn provides a faster return on investment.

The BSC 3000 also meets market requirements with regards to minimizing operating costs, thanks to a reliable platform and efficient maintenance and operational working. The maintenance of the BSC 3000 is cost-effective by using key features such as plug-andplay hardware modules and remote maintenance terminal. Operations between the BSC 3000 and the OMC are performed at high speeds via a TCP/IP network. Compared to the previous generation (BSC2G), it offers a significant footprint reduction (up to five times less for a 3000-Erlang configuration) and consumes less power (up to three times less per Erlang). The BSC 3000 is designed to achieve a faster BSS network upgrade; for example, allowing the download of more BTSs in parallel,

The BSC 3000 meets the GSM network engineering challenges resulting from customer growth and the introduction of high-speed packet data services. It is the powerhouse needed to drive resource efficiencies, to carry the high volume of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and EDGE traffic, and to enable the operator to take full advantage of additional and new revenue streams.

Designed to satisfy the continuous increase in the number of GSM subscribers and in the MoU (minutes of usage) per subscriber, the TCU 3000 product is a very high and scalable capacity product ranging from 200 E to 1800 E in one transcoding node, or up to 3600 E with two transcoding nodes in one TCU 3000 cabinet, simply by adding a transcoding resource module. To ensure a smooth introduction, the TCU 3000 coexists with the existing TCU2G under the management of the same OMC-R.

Customer satisfaction through high reliability

Lowering the cost of ownership

The TCU 3000 addresses the requirement for higher voice quality and half rate vocoder by allowing the implementation of the new AMR vocoder. The TCU 3000 and AMR implementation contribute to minimizing operators investment by optimizing the number of radio resources to cope with the increasing traffic, while maintaining a very high voice quality in the network. In terms of transcoding resource management, the TCU 3000 provides high flexibility, so the MSC does not have to manage A-interface circuit pools: one TCU 3000 is able to process different types of voice calls (FR, EFR and in option AMR), allocating resource pools to the related types of vocoders and adapting those pools to the traffic requirement.

The TCU 3000, built on Nortels switching platform, provides switch class availability: 99.999 percent availability per system. All hardware modules are totally redundant (either 1+1 or N+1 redundancy scheme), including the PCM interface boards. Hence there is no need to provision additional Ater and A-interface links and the TCU node for redundancy.

The TCU 3000 significantly reduces the operating costs thanks to its high density, ease of maintenance, and switch class reliability. Compared with the previous generation (TCU 2G), TCU 3000 offers a significant footprint reduction for high capacity with six times less footprint for maximum capacity configuration, and consumes much less power with seven times less per Erlang. Key features such as plugand-play hardware modules, a local or remote maintenance terminal, and precise fault detection and reporting make the maintenance of TCU 3000 equipment cost-effective.
