A deficiency in calculus may be remedied by taking MATH 5304 (Applied Math for Non Majors I), or MATH 1325 (with a B or better). Deficiencies must be remedied within the first twelve hours of graduate work. Degree credit is not earned for program prerequisites, though all grades earned in graduate courses impact the cumulative GPA. Applicants to the MS Marketing, MS Healthcare Management, MS International Management Studies and MS Innovation and Entrepreneurship programs do not have a prerequisite requirement. The MS Finance program has the prerequisite of Calculus but also requires basic statistics as a program prerequisite. Candidates who have not taken an equivalent calculus course must follow the deficiency remedy listed above. Students who have not meet the basic statistics prerequisite will need to complete OPRE 6301 to complete the basic statistics requirement for the MS Finance Program.

Degree Requirements The Master of Science in Finance degree program is designed for students with or without previous educational background in finance. At least 36 hours of management course work beyond prerequisite courses is required, including 12 hours of basic business core courses and 24 hours of graduate finance courses. Candidates in the M.S. in Finance can choose one of three concentrations: Investment Management, Financial Analysis, or Financial Engineering and Risk Management. In addition, there is a Financial Management concentration. The Investment Management concentration is designed for students interested in pursuing an investment career and completing the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams. The Financial Analyst concentration is designed for students interested in corporate finance, investment banking, private equity, or corporate restructuring and turnarounds (and the Certified Turnaround Professional exams). The Financial Engineering and Risk Management concentration is designed for students with the quantitative ability to pursue a career applying quantitative methods to risk management problems and to complete the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exams. Because two of these concentrations are specifically designed to prepare students for certain certifications, students are recommended to complete all the course work in these particular concentrations in order to prepare for the associated certification exams. However, students can also pursue the Financial Management concentration, which allows them to tailor their course work to specific career objectives. Waivers and Transfers of Credit Waivers of program requirements may be granted in recognition of previous coursework completed with a grade of B or better within the past six years in a specific business program area. Waivers are approved by the appropriate Program Director through a process which allows a student to skip a core course and take the next higher level course in the same academic area with no reduction in the overall program hour requirements. Transfer credits may be granted for equivalent graduate course work taken at other universities with a grade of B or better within the past six years. Up to 9 hours of course work from other universities may be waived from or transferred to the MSF program. Consult the UTD Graduate Catalog for further details. Applications for approval of waivers and transfers may be obtained in and submitted to the School of Management Advising Office. Courses are primarily offered in the late afternoon and evening of weekdays. Several courses are currently offered and are planned to be offered through the World Wide Web. Students can obtain a dual MBA and MSF degree by taking a total of 71 credits (assuming all prerequisites and degree requirements are met). Prerequisites Calculus and basic statistics are required as prerequisites. A deficiency in calculus may be remedied by taking MATH 5304 (Applied Mathematical Analysis for Non Majors I), or MATH 1325 (either course with a grade of "B" or better).Taking OPRE 6301 will fulfill the deficiency and complete the basic statistics requirement. Degree credit is not earned for program prerequisites.
